Making It Better: CAB Sustainability Award Winner, Wharton 3C Cattle
Dear Customers and Friends,
Welcome to our 7th Gardiner Angus Ranch Early Bird Bull Sale. Although it wasn’t our thought seven years ago, the Early Bird sale is the first opportunity we have each year to offer elite genetics. Our intent seven years ago was to offer our commercial customers needing bulls for early spring turnout the opportunity to purchase the same genetics as our other production sales. This sale will feature 414 registered bulls, including 108 20-mo-old bulls and 306 17-mo-old bulls. More than 85% of the bulls in the sale are sired by seven of our most trusted AI sires. GAR Home Town is the sire of 152 bulls, followed by 75 sons of Transcendent, 37 sons of Sunbeam, 36 sons of Dual Threat, followed by Freedom, Kansas and GAR Prophet K263.
There’s a lot of discussion these days about the need for more “maternal.” I have heard this dialog my entire life, and I am more mature than I was! Today, we seem to have acquired the label of being a “terminal” breeder. We disagree, we select for all traits. In fact, throughout my life no one has been able to actually define “maternal” or measure it. We (GAR) define maternal as the female breeds in our time restricted breeding period and reproduces in our environment. If she does not we make food out of her. This has been our program since 1964 when Henry Gardiner started our complete artificial insemination program without the use of clean up bulls.
We always appreciate discussion of what works well in the beef industry. We applaud the enormous progress the Angus breed has made by using sound science, accurate data and actual documented results. We truly believe that cow-calf producers have the tools to choose for all traits. The key for all of us is to choose the traits that are both of economic value and highly heritable. The more lowly heritable traits such as reproduction are crucial, but the genetic component is virtually impossible to measure. I have come to use the quote that “nutrition is reproduction”. Dad started our total A.I. program at GAR 60 years ago. I would be proud to say that we have exceeded Henry Gardiner’s conception rates. We have not. We average 65% conception per service on our cows and 55% per service on our virgin heifers. This is the exact same conception rate that we had in 1968, 1984, 1994, etc. On average, we are average, but we have demanded our females conceive in our time restricted breeding season. We have had the good fortune to work with many of you for the past few decades. Our observation is that when it rains, and forage is available, you, too, have had very acceptable conception rates. What I have also noted with many of you is that you are great stewards of your land, and when it doesn’t rain, you adapt and figure out a nutrition plan that allows your cowherd to succeed. That is what we, as cattle producers, have done for decades and will continue to do in the future. I remember the statement dad made years ago (others surely did too) stating we select for the highly heritable, economically important traits and we manage the lowly heritable traits. This is what we have observed our customers do, too.
We celebrate the decades of progress we have made across the entire production spectrum by using all available tools, applying selection pressure on all traits of economic importance. Today, as a total AI and ET herd for six decades, our conception rate has not changed. Our disciplined approach is simple. The females in our cowherd have every opportunity to conceive. Because of balanced trait selection, the open females have value and become a part of the food supply. At GAR, those females are not “culled.” They simply did not conceive in our rigorous time-restricted breeding. Because of their birth to harvest genetics, the open females move to the final phase of a beef animal’s life cycle with value. Our goal is to produce bulls with the genetic ability to sire females that will conceive and raise a valuable calf in any environment AND the steer mates will grade Prime.
We are very fortunate to be able to communicate with many of our commercial cow-calf producers that retain ownership. I often mention Henry’s belief that one day we would produce Prime at the rate we produced Choice. Henry would be so excited to know that in 2023, 2,511 GAR-Influenced steers and heifers processed through U.S. Premium Beef have graded 99.16% Choice or better and 46.78% Prime. The cattle have earned $187.14 per head in premiums for the owners of the cattle. Overall, since 2017, 19,751 head of GAR cattle have graded 98.77% Choice or better and 34.18% Prime and returning more than $3 million in premiums to the owners. This data is not marketing “spin.” It’s the documentation of value for our commercial customers—real money for real people. This OPPORTUNITY to receive VALUE for our product is what keeps us all in business!
We encourage you to study the average AAA EPDs for this sale. From calving ease, weaning and yearling weight, stature, milk and end product merit, this offering will fit in any production environment, regardless of geography. For those believing you must choose between maternal or end product merit, I call your attention to average Method Genetics indexes for Maternal Production (MPI), Quality Pounds Index (QPI) and the all encompassing Retained Ownership Income (ROI). The 2024 Early Bird offering ranks in the top 14% for MPI, top 5% for QPI and top 5% for ROI. Your greatest challenge is to “choose” which bulls best fit your operation and marketing goals. Yet, I remind you that the bulls in this sale are elite for these economically important traits. Sort the bulls in the sale for the traits that you need to make the directional change needed and then inspect the bulls. Buy the ones that physically fit your preference and price.
We hope you can join us in person for our Sunday evening panel discussion. Frequently, I have the opportunity to speak to groups and regardless of the group, the underlying message is the value of relationships. Relationships evolve. Those relationships that began as professional working relationships evolve to trusted partners and close friends. We value and practice transparency. On Sunday evening, my trusted advisors and best friends and I will discuss the evolution of our relationships and what we have learned from each other. Businesses will continue to have challenges, from input costs to weather and beyond. Each generation must understand the value of relationships as they begin to build their own trusted networks.
We look forward to seeing you all as we continue to celebrate one of the most favorable marketing environments for beef we have seen in decades. Let’s keep Making Beef Better!
We are so thankful for your trust in our family and our cattle.
Words can’t adequately describe our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our small but mighty staff. Each staff member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment—there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom.
Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation. Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.
Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an all-around good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn.
Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.
Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt. Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assists in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.
Calen Bailey was a fall 2020 intern at GAR. As a full-time team member, Calen is someone we depend on to “do it all!” When Calen takes responsibility for any task, there is no detail left to chance. We appreciate Calen’s curiosity and determination to tackle any job, from farming to working cattle. Her demeanor is engaging and positive. Her willingness to problem solve is priceless.
C.J. Bonilla was raised in the Ashland community, graduated from Ashland High School and left Kansas to serve our country as a U.S. Marine. After his honorable discharge, C.J. returned to Clark County. C.J. is a valuable addition to the team, observing penned cattle for health and wellness and assisting in the day to day cattle operation.
You buy good bulls with key genetic values for herd improvement. You know that EPDs are a selection tool to assist in focusing your production goals. You target an industry-focused high quality carcass value as part of your breeding goals.
Yet, when it comes to the cow herd and replacement heifer choices or selection strategies, the access to commercial genetic selection tools aligned with your goals and in the language of our industry (EPDs, indexes) is limited.
Method Genetics® results may just be what you need. In nearly six years (that’s about a generation interval in a commercial cow calf operation), Method customers in over 20 states now have access to EPDs and index values for their females to fine tune their selection strategies. This is a progressive step beyond just placing genetic pressure on the sire side of the equation.
Method Genetics provides a flexible, analytical opportunity for Angus-based cattle producers by using DNA technology and incorporating it into a genetic evaluation system.
Who is the target audience of Method?
Method selection tools are geared toward commercial Angus cow herds interested in characterizing potential replacement heifers and foundation females.
Why is Method Genetics different?
Established in 2014, Method Genetics LLC provides genetic selection tools and decision-making assistance related to commercial cattle production. Through the Method single-step multi-trait genetic evaluation, commercial cow-calf operators can access EPDs and indexes on their cow herd for use in genetic selection. DNA technology makes this selection advantage available to commercial herds, large and small, that in the past could only use EPDs in sire selection.
How do I use Method Genetics results?
Method results are typically used to rank replacement females for selection and culling. Producers review Method results when purchasing potential herd sires and use the Method rankings to match their herd goals. Emphasis is placed on the Method indexes for maternal, growth, and retained ownership.
How do I begin participating in Method Genetics?
Most producers begin by collecting DNA samples for genotyping. Blood cards and tissue sampling units are acceptable. There are no enrollment fees. Many producers have historical data from their herds (weaning weights, carcass data) that they have not ever really been able to fully utilize to aide in selection for their herds. This information can also
be incorporated into the genetic evaluation to give producers even more informative selection tools.
How are Method indexes (MPI, QPI, and ROI) computed?
Your genotyping results on tested animals go through our complete genetic evaluation that generates key Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Method has a database of performance trait records, pedigrees, and DNA genotypes used in a single-step genetic evaluation to derive EPDs for use in the Method indexes. Method does not use breed organization EPDs are part of this process. Because of what we know about EPDs and their derivation, Method results are comparable to other Method results, but they are not comparable to breed organization EPDs.
Can this testing identify parentage?
Method Genetics has a large database of AI and natural service sires for use in sire assignment. Participants with tested females on file have the opportunity to generate pedigrees from this parentage benefit, adding increase accuracy to their Method results. Parentage work is included in the Method DNA testing at no cost.
What details are needed on commercial Angus samples for DNA testing?
Samples are sent directly to Method Genetics personnel. The minimum inputs needed for commercial cattle DNA samples are a unique herd ID, approximate age, and gender for each sample. We can incorporate any pedigree you know, also.
What is Method ROI that I keep hearing about and seeing in catalogs?
Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point would typically use the Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index as a tool. ROI ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and it consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
What results are received after testing is completed?
Most producers receive the Method EPDs for calving ease, carcass traits, and docility. Of primary interest are the three Method Genetic index (MPI, QPI, ROI) solutions that accompany the EPDs. Results are returned in a sortable spreadsheet for use at the operation in breeding, selection and culling decisions.
How do my Method results compare to cow herds with similar goals?
Method customers receive summary statistics to compare their herd results to a database of similar commercial cow herds with goals focused on maternal and retained ownership traits for a high-quality carcass product. This benchmark data helps Method customers characterize and understand where their current herd’s genetic level is and provides specific selection direction to reach goals for consistent, high-quality production of USDA Prime and Premium Choice product.
What is the Method Genetics Marketing Advantage?
Beyond the use of Method results for selection decisions by a commercial cow-calf producer, this information has become a reliable means to characterize the genetic merit of replacement females, providing confidence for buyers purchasing replacements. Selecting commercial replacement females with the Method Genetics results allow a producer to jump-start their program with known genetics based on a proven track record.
MPI: Maternal Production
QPI: Quality Pounds
ROI: Retained Ownership Income
Where do the percentile ranks on young sires and AI sires seen in catalogs come from?
Method has seedstock participants using the Method Prime test and they receive more detailed EPDs and percentiles based upon the Method Genetic population. They have made a commitment to their customers using the Method Genetics system by testing and providing the Method indexes on the bulls they offer. The bulls they sell provide a great opportunity as they have Method EPDs and indexes which are comparable to other Method Genetics-generated solutions, regardless of the testing points.
How do I choose a level of testing at Method?
Most commercial Angus herds go with the Method Choice ($35). Method Prime runs $45 as of today and is used mostly by seedstock participants. What age do I pull DNA samples on my animals?
DNA samples can be collected at any age. Advanced customers in the Method system have begun to use tissue sampling units on calves after birth. We encourage customers to conservatively approach testing and focus on the newest generations of their cattle.
I am already testing with Method Genetics, so how can I learn more about my cattle?
If details are provided from the customer, we use existing pedigree information (for example on registered Angus bulls owned or AI sires being used or females of known genetics) to fill in relationship gaps, as well as incorporating this pedigree information into the genetic evaluation tools created. From a performance record standpoint, we can also incorporate these data (contemporary group weaning weights for example) into a genetic evaluation and key EPDs and index values include this information.
We continue to add performance records, pedigree, and genotypes to the Method genetic evaluation. An EPD is a prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit that has an associated possible change, or standard error of prediction. EPDs are not static values and can change as more is information is incorporated into the system from one evaluation to the next. Customers actively participating in the Method Genetics program can request cow herd updates as needed to better prepare for bull selection and breeding herd management.
How can I learn more about Method Genetics benefits?
Method Genetics, LLC provides genetic selection tools that enhance decision making for commercial Angus cow-calf producers. Using genetic evaluation methodology with performance records, pedigree, and genomic information, Method Genetics® indexes provide customized solutions to assist producers in capturing and implementing genetic values into their individual breeding programs. For more information, contact Bill Bowman (bbowman@ methodgenetics.com 816-752-0079) or Dr. Sally Northcutt (snorthcutt@methodgenetics.com 816-244-0969). Our 7th Annual Early Bird Sale features 414 bulls. These bulls offer our customers needing bulls for early spring turn out, the opportunity to select the same elite genetics as our other three sales.
The majority of the offering is sired by 7 of our most trusted herd sires:
These are proven sires we trust to deliver reproductive efficiency, calving ease, docility, post-weaning growth, feedlot performance and carcass value. Sons of each of these sires bring many different attributes to the business of beef. The averages of the bulls genetic predictions are listed below:
Since 2014, Method Genetics Indexes for Maternal Pounds (MPI), Quality Pounds (QPI), and the all-encompassing Retained Ownership Income (ROI) are our most valuable selection criteria tools. ROI benchmarks our cattle against a population of cattle that provide opportunities across the entire beef cattle spectrum. Simply put, ROI benchmarks our cattle against a population of cattle that does what we do best. We encourage you to use ROI as your “go to” selection tool.

LOT 1
Henry Gardiner had a talk he used to present called “You may have it all.” He dared not settle for excellence in just one trait. N6252 possesses the genetic predictions that Henry envisioned. Top calving ease, early growth, stature that isn’t out of bounds with a combination of marbling and ribeye that was not possible a few short years ago. Maternal Production Index (MPI) that ranks in the top 3% of the Method Genetics database, and one of the elite ROI Indexes in our history. Yes dad, as usual, you were so right! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
Transcendent is a sire that was named due to genetic predictions that were way above and beyond the range of normal for marbling. N5152’s attributes for calving ease, modest size with top 35% yearling growth make him a son that does all of these things like his dad with top 1% RE and bottom 25% YH. He is what breed improvement is all about. We find this necessary and exciting! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
N6292 is one of the highest marbling bulls in Angus history. His elite percentile rankings for the indexes shows his value for so many different traits. Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.

You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest. It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.
Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.
If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes.
If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

This fall, we reported the passing of GAR Sunrise (16933958). Sunrise made headlines when he earned the Lot 1 designation and sold during the 2012 Gardiner Angus Ranch spring production sale. During his service at Select Sires, he became one of the Angus breed’s high-use AI sires. According to a lifetime report from Select Sires, Sunrise sold 155,330 units of semen.
The 2012 GAR spring sale was the first sale at the ranch to incorporate internet bidding, enabling interested bidders the option to view online videos prior to the sale. GAR Sunrise’s video was viewed more than 1,000 times prior to the sale. For the first time in GAR history, beef producers placed realtime bids online hoping to outlast the competition sitting on the seats. Two commercial Angus producers and longtime GAR customers, Rob Sellard, Bucklin, Kansas, and Randy Bayne, Protection, Kansas, purchased Sunrise on a winning bid of $95,000.
When Sunrise sold in 2012, he ranked in the top 3% of the Angus breed for calving ease and early growth, top 4% for heifer pregnancy and top 1% of the breed for end product merit. As a 13-year-old bull, today Sunrise ranks in the bottom 45% of the breed for stature, top 10% for marbling at +1.17, and top 4% for $Grid with 322 carcass records posted. We appreciate a message received from our longtime friend and VP, Beef Program and Product Manager at Select Sires, Brian House,
“Not every bull gets to the place where he is best known for how special his daughters are— Sunrise did—and his name in a pedigree is like GOLD!”
GAR Sunrise leaves a legacy of generational Angus progeny with birth to harvest value. Sunrise’s EPD data is still impressive, but over a decade, the genetic improvement in his progeny was remarkable. Structural soundness and foot quality have always been a foundation for longevity in beef production and a focus at Gardiner Angus Ranch. Sunrise progeny were recognized for foot quality and structural soundness throughout their lifetime. His daughters were recognized for excellent udders, moderate milk, exceptional foot quality and the ability to thrive in any environment. While describing Sunrise’s place in modern Angus history, Mark Gardiner said,
“GAR Sunrise was a sire that attracted the interest of many commercial cow-calf producers who understood the value of a sire that produced progeny with elite carcass quality and left moderate, structurally sound, highly productive females in the herd. Sunrise proved his value year after year and left a legacy of progeny with exceptional value. He returned to the ranch in 2021 and enjoyed retirement grazing in our pastures.”

Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. If you would like to insure your cattle, you can do so on sale day. Most of the cattle will be delivered within 45 days after the sale. If, for any reason, you desire an expedited delivery, please notify Grant Gardiner at (620) 635-0382 or email grant.c.gardiner@gmail.com and we will make arrangements for quicker delivery.

Our goal to make beef better is a message to ourselves reminding us to stay focused on every aspect of beef production. Today, we bid, buy and feed several thousand head of home-raised and customer cattle. The performance of each group is documented. The steers are fed and finished in some of the finest, most professional cattle feeding operations in the country. It’s important to note that, with every purchase or, in the case of our home-raised steers, their heifer mates become replacements in their respective cow herds.
The feedlot relationships we rely on to manage elite genetics have been built over two
generations. These professional cattle feeders understand the nutritional requirements of elite, higher performing Angus feeder cattle.
Early in the summer, we took delivery on a group of 240 steers weighing 600 pounds. The steers were purchased from a longtime GAR customer, Joe Howard and Bobbie Williamson, Wichita Falls, Texas.

November 21, the steers were gathered in the pasture, loaded on trucks, and delivered to Shaw Feedyard weighing 900 pounds. Within an hour after arriving the steers were moved to a dry pen with a full bunk of rations designed to maximize their genetic potential to gain four pounds or more per day.
The steers will be marketed on the U.S. Premium Beef grid and delivered to National Beef in the Spring of 2024 and the results shared in our 2024 “Meating Demand” sale catalog.

Henry Gardiner was a lifetime learner. He believed in making sure anyone around him was engaged and had an opportunity to learn. He spent his lifetime as an “out-of-the-box” thinker. The Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems Lecture Series is our family’s way to honor Henry’s curiosity by continuing to stimulate thought and create meaningful discourse in a public space.
Steve Hunt, former CEO of U.S. Premium Beef delivered the first lecture in 2013. Since then, global thought leaders have accepted an invitation to present the annual lecture. Not only do these global leaders present a lecture, each generously are committed to extending their campus visit, meeting with students in small group discussions.
When we announced the formation of the lecture series, many of our friends and customers generously contributed to fund the lecture series and scholarship program. We are incredibly grateful for their support.

When we began our structured internship program in 2012, the goal was to provide a hands-on, immersive experience to university students planning to become professionals in agriculture.
After 11 years, we have hosted 63 students from across America and now, internationally. We are so very grateful these young, bright and curious students chose Gardiner Angus Ranch to add to their educational experiences.
Upon arrival, interns are immediately integrated into the day-to-day operations. Depending upon the season, they may be challenged with their first ultrasound experience or mounting up to join the GAR team in rounding up and moving large groups of cattle several miles. From pregnancy and semen testing, embryo transfer days or working calves, the intern cohorts quickly learn the importance of time management and “keep the cattle coming!”
The interns travel to other beef cattle operations and learn more about the differences in management and business models. They gain real-world experiences as the ranch prepares for production sales four times a year.
At the end of their intern experience, we consider these students as valuable members of the larger Gardiner Angus Ranch family.

One family’s journey from town to the peak of premium beef production earns the CAB Sustainability Award for Wharton 3C Cattle.
Most sane folks don’t choose to go into business with Mother Nature. She’s a fickle and unpredictable partner.
So, how did two people with zero agricultural background, no generational land, wealth or genetics carve a profitable partnership with her in Southwest Kansas?
“Shannon is the brains and I’m the brawn,” Rusty Wharton jokes.
The real answer is a little more nuanced.
The view of Wharton 3C Ranch, near Syracuse, Kansas, in the summer of 2023 is so green Shannon and Rusty Wharton might have better luck convincing people it is a slice of heaven rather than the harsh, drought-ridden environment locals know.
Don’t expect to make a visit to the ranch without a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The cattle will tell you; it isn’t always this pleasant. In fact, a few years ago, there wasn’t a cow in these pastures, lack of rain left the soil unable to produce much more than dust.
The commercial outfit is made up of about 600 head spread across more than 35,000 acres, most of that a Western Association of Fish and Wildlife conservation easement. A 1,000-head grow yard prepares calves for finishing. The Whartons have been managing it for various owners since 2005.
“We either had enough money to buy the land or to buy the cattle, never both,” Rusty says.
The last time it changed hands in 2017, they made the numbers work, purchasing the cattle and a little land, leasing the rest.
A mix of puzzle pieces built over time made the unlikely a reality for this military service veteran and a horse girl from Pennsylvania who carve out their own place in the cattle business.
The Wharton family story started in Kentucky where the couple met and married. Rusty fell into commercial ranching via a rodeo friend; Shannon found her passion for cattle through Block and Bridle at Penn State. After her master’s degree in cattle breeding and genetics from the University of Kentucky, she wanted to go to west to Montana. Texas was calling Rusty’s name.
They split the difference when the only job opportunity that made sense was a position for Shannon at Grant County Feeders in Ulysses, Kansas.
“My dad thought I was crazy,” she says. “He asked what in the world I was doing with that master’s degree. I was driving a feed truck and chasing dreams.”
The decision to learn the feeding business was strategic. Already familiar with the commercial ranching, they decided making it in the cattle business would mean learning all the sectors.
Their family mission statement then is a bit fuzzy now, but it boiled down to working together to make the cattle industry better.
Humble, willing to work hard, listen and learn, the path to their own operation took them across the Midwest man-
Let’s do it to the best of our ability.
aging ranches and working in feed yards. Their teachers read like a cattle industry hall of fame, including Mark Gardiner, Sam Hands, Minnie Lou Bradley and Larry Corah, among others.
“There were a lot of opportunities that opened up for us because of our willingness to work hard, but also because of our open, business-focused, progressive way of thinking,” Shannon says.
Decades of learning, growing, raising all types of cattle in diverse environments under different philosophies provided a list of lessons that would direct what to do (and not to do) if they ever had full control of the reins.
“What we thought were setbacks at the time were actually learning opportunities that made us better,” Shannon says.
At Wharton 3C Cattle, if you want to know the details of the land, grass, wildlife and irrigation Rusty has forgotten more than most will ever know. When it comes to genetics and data-based decision-making and running the balance sheet, Shannon is the expert. Equal partners with a shared passion for the cattle.
“We each have our areas of expertise, and they don’t overlap except for the cows,” Shannon explains.
“If she passed tomorrow, I’d be so out of luck,” Rusty admits. “I don’t even know how to open Quickbooks.”
Shannon rolls her eyes with a smile, sharing she’d also be up a creek without a paddle if he weren’t by her side.
Unburdened by tradition that sometimes saddles generational ranches, the Wharton’s mindset is business first. Follow the science and data in selection and management, then work to get better every day.
“We have our goal towards quality, not only quality in the meat we produce, but also quality of the land,” Shannon says. “What’s the point of doing it if you’re not striving to be the best you can be?”
Involved in retained ownership since the 1990s, the couple
tracks everything from conception to carcass data. A recent load of cattle were 100 percent Certified Angus Beef ®, including 92 percent Prime. They achieved 87 percent or higher CAB and Prime across all their 2021 fed cattle. Premiums on those cattle add some extra black ink to the bottom line.
But it’s about more than data and dollars.
People and an industry-wide vision drive them to build not only their section of the cattle business, but the entire industry.
“We all need each other,” Shannon explains. “Without the cow-calf producer restaurants don’t have great beef to serve, without the packer, our product doesn’t get to those restaurants and consumers don’t have access to it. And commercial producers need someone to feed and finish those cattle. So, it’s very important that we all work together and realize in the end, we’re all producing the same product.”
“It’s
such a neat organization where we can have the whole supply chain sit down together and say, okay, from the producer all the way to the retailer, we’re producing this beef. Let’s do it to the best of our ability.”
— Shannon Wharton
This thought process for greater industry engagement led Shannon to get involved in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (USRSB).
“It’s such a neat organization where we can have the whole supply chain sit down together and say, okay, from the producer all the way to the retailer, we’re producing this beef. Let’s do it to the best of our ability. Let’s make sure we’re not impacting the environment negatively. Let’s ensure we’re taking care of the animals and our employees.”
“Being involved in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef has impacted how we communicate what we do, because we’ve been doing this for a long time and this is what we believe in.”
— Shannon Wharton
The USRSB framework aligns with the Whartons’ mindset on management.
“We have to be sustainable to be in this business.” Rusty says. “If we don’t do the right thing with the grazing management plan, if we don’t take care of the cattle properly and if we fail to bring together our customer base, then we’re not going to be in business.”
Rusty admits he’s been one to store cattle or grazing data in his head or scribbles in a dashboard notebook. However, technology to sort and the discipline to keep records allow him to run their cattle operation like any other business. That recorded and analyzed data enables good decisions, workable drought plans and meeting the requirements of take 1/3, leave 2/3 when grazing the conservation easement.
“It helps you stay focused when you need to make a move,” Rusty says.
The most valuable takeaway for the couple’s USRSB involvement has been opening new avenues of communication. Shannon has firsthand experience in how simple management tools like Beef Quality Assurance certification and written grazing management plans can align values across the beef supply chain.
“Being involved in the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef has impacted how we communicate what we do, because we’ve been doing this for a long time and this is what we believe in,” Shannon says. “So, our communication about sustainability is improved by the Roundtable.”
Rusty and Shannon’s children, the three C’s of Wharton 3C Cattle; Catie, Clayton and Cara have taken the lessons learned growing up on ranches, crawling around feedyard offices and riding in feed trucks into their own careers. All went to college to study agriculture. Catie works for Plains Cotton Growers in Lubbock, Texas. Cara is finishing her degree in agriculture economics with plans to farm with her fiancé in Nebraska and Clayton just moved home to Syracuse to join the family business and teach high school agriculture at the local school.
“You maybe aren’t going to be a millionaire working in agriculture, but money’s not everything,” Shannon says. “And if you go to work every day and you’re passionate about what you do and you love what you do, then it’s not work. Then it’s just fun.”
It also takes grit. The balance of pure joy from the hard work of doing something they love and riding out the rough storms along the way turned two first-generation cattle ranchers into legacy builders.
Honored with the Certified Angus Beef Sustainability Award in September at the brand’s annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Whartons embody progress and ways to leave things better than they found them.
“I hope the legacy of our ranch is quality,” Rusty says.
Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
MATERNAL
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
CARCASS
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD and ultrasound-derived percent intramuscular fat (%IMF) EPD contribute to $QG.
Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
DAM’S PRODUCTION RECORD:
Act.BW — Actual Birth Weight: The number of calves each dam has had and the average actual birth weight of those calves. Example: 3-81 means the dam has had 3 calves with an average actual birth weight of 81 pounds.
BWR — Birth Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average birth weight ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average BWR of 98.
WWR — Weaning Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average weaning weight ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average WWR of 102.
YWR — Yearling Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average yearling weight ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average YWR of 103.
DAM’S ULTRASOUND PRODUCTION RECORD
%IMF: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average %IMF ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for IMF with an average ratio of 112.
REA: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average ribeye area ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for REA with an average ratio of 112.
Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rib fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rib fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rib fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rib fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.
RU Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rump fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rump fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rump fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rump fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.
BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.
Calving-Ease Score: 1 = unassisted; 2 = some assistance; 3 = mechanical assistance.
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.
MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.
RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.
DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.
MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per
calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.
QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.
RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.
We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Gardiner Angus Ranch, both bulls and females, are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If a bull is injured at any time in the 12 months following the sale so as to make them functionally infertile, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. If a female is determined to be a non-breeder, then we would ask you to sell her and would offer you the difference of her purchase price minus the salvage value as a credit in any future GAR sale. This guarantee is in addition to the Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which also apply.
Most of the cattle to be delivered from the sale are delivered within 45 days after the sale. If, for any reason, you desire an expedited delivery, please notify Grant Gardiner at (620) 635-0382 or email grant.c.gardiner@gmail.com and we will make arrangements for quicker delivery.
