“ That thing—tradition—has held more things back in this world than a red traffic light.
—Will Rogers, March 30, 1929

Dear customers and friends,

Welcome to our 19th Gardiner Angus Ranch Fall Production Sale. In 2005, when we cataloged the offering for the first fall sale, beef cattle production was, compared to today, moving at a “snail’s pace.” The American Angus Association was working hard to develop more reliable tools to identify high-valued genetics. The growth of Certified Angus Beef® was modest at best. One of the huge obstacles to growth and increasing demand for beef was the impact of BSE. From 2003 to 2004, beef exports dropped 82% due to most of the world banning beef imports from the U.S. While we all can appreciate tradition, thankfully, the beef industry didn’t let tradition or conventional thinking deter us from continuing to due diligence, conduct valuable research and develop the tools we needed to make beef better.

Today, approximately 11% of U.S. beef is exported around the world and adds $500 PER HEAD to the value of every carcass. The United States is the world’s largest beef producer and second-largest exporter. In 2022, Certified Angus Beef sold 1.16 billion pounds of branded products to 54 countries and returned $182 million in CAB grid premiums. THIS IS PHENOMENAL PROGRESS!

When we think about how, in less than 20 years, we’ve been fortunate to make such progress, it’s the stuff that makes for great stories. For us at Gardiner Angus Ranch, it’s our core belief that as beef producers our only limitation is getting stuck in conventional thinking. Henry Gardiner spent most of his life as a beef producer searching to make beef better without compromising a single economically relevant trait. The largest obstacle for Henry was the lack of scientific tools to make better breeding decisions. Another obstacle was the lack of information once cattle left the feedyard.

For most of our history, we have used the feedyard as a tool to document and prove the value of our registered seedstock. Until 1997, when U.S. Premium Beef delivered the first load of fed cattle to National Beef, there was no system in place to get carcass data back or understand how to capture the value of higher quality beef. Thanks to visionaries like Steve Hunt, U.S. Premium Beef has given us access, information and a road map to continue to make beef better.

We are offering 452 bulls in this sale that offer more genetic potential and ultimately value to our customers than any we have ever offered. Continuing with Henry’s “no compromise” commitment, these bulls are elite for ALL the traits of economic importance. The entire bull offering ranks in the top 15% of the Angus breed for calving ease, top 2% of the breed for marbling, top 2% for $Combined and $Beef. Home Town and Transcendent are exactly the genetic powerhouses we expected them to be. There are 169 sons of Home Town and Transcendent in the sale, followed by 32 sons of GAR Dual Threat and Identified, respectively.

In addition, we are selling 92 elite registered females, 65 bred heifers and 27 young cows. These females are genetically designed to give our customers years of longevity (top 2% of the breed for carcass quality, and a +11 average calving ease EPD). The females are bred to the next generation of genetically superior sires, GAR Apex, GAR Fireproof, GAR Home Free, GAR Dual Force as well as our proven sires, Home Town and Transcendent.

Immediately following the registered portion of the sale, we will offer more than 475 genetically elite bred commercial females. The GAR-Influenced females are AI bred to many of the same proven GAR AI sires, Home Town, Transcendent, Dual Threat, Home Free, Home Team and Fireproof. The females will sell in groups. Buyer must take a minimum of 10 head but may take more within a category and as always, we offer free delivery.

We hope you can join us in person for our Sunday evening panel discussion featuring two beef producers that are making a difference, Margie Mayer Rice and Katie Blunk. Our friend, Randall Spare, has provided herd health guidance to both operations for decades and will serve as moderator. We look forward to seeing you all as we continue to celebrate one of the most favorable marketing environments for beef we have seen in decades. Let’s keep Making Beef Better!

We are so thankful for your trust in our family and our cattle.

SUMMER & FALL INTERNS

Since 2012, The Gardiner Angus Ranch structured internship program has hosted 64 students from universities across the U.S.

This fall, we welcome the first international interns to the GAR experience! Lydia Keeping arrived at Will Rogers World Airport in Okla. City, August 18, from London, England. Lydia is a senior at Harper Adams University, Shropshire, England. Lydia has considerable experience in the equine industry working at the largest equine collection and distribution center in the UK.

Later this fall, Brooke Barnes will join our fall intern cohort when she arrives from Perth, Australia. Brooke is a senior at Murdoch University and is a member of the intercollegiate meat judging team.

Katie Turner is a junior at University of Florida, Gainesville, Floria. Katie learned

about the GAR internship program from former intern, Ambree Sandell. Katie expresses an interest in learning more about sales and marketing in the beef industry.

The internship program is designed to best accommodate students in the spring and fall. On occasion we receive a request for a summer internship. Greyson Philoppovic, Destrehan, Louisiana, is a junior at Texas A&M University and plans to pursue a post graduate degree focusing on beef cattle and equine industry. Greyson was recommended by Dr. Jeff Savell, one of the most respected meat scientists in America! It was a pleasure to have Greyson join us this summer and are excited to watch him work toward his career goals.

The students arrive with lots of goals, aspirations and hopes to continue to gain useful

experience and eventually become professionals in agriculture. While experience is helpful, it has never been a prerequisite for an internship. Curiosity and a willingness to learn, however, are. The fall interns arrive just days before we begin ultrasounding thousands of cattle and embryo transfer on over 100 donors. From day one, interns learn low-stress handling, horsemanship, reproduction, data collection and basic animal husbandry skills.

In addition to our “day jobs” at GAR, the interns have an opportunity to travel with Mark to visit other seedstock operations, feedlots and GAR commercial cow-calf operations. They also are invited to accompany him to speaking and presentation events. A few nuggets of Great Plains history are always included!

Each intern cohort is unique. We are grateful that 64 students from all across the country, and now internationally, applied and made the commitment to advance their education at Gardiner Angus Ranch. It is rewarding and reassuring to know these bright, young students are preparing themselves for careers in food animal production and will continue to pay it forward.

Welcome to Our 2023 Fall Interns!

Katie Turner Fall 2023

It is important to recognize the GAR Team at every opportunity. Each member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment…there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom. We are humbled by our team’s collective experience, can-do attitudes and loyalty to the Gardiner family and GAR.

Kurt Borgelt

OUR TEAM

Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of a cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation.

Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.

Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an all-around good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn.

Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt. Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assist in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.

C.J. Bonilla was raised in the Ashland community, graduated from Ashland High School and left Kansas to serve our country as a U.S. Marine. After his honorable discharge, C.J. returned to Clark County. C.J. is a valuable addition to the GAR team, observing penned cattle for health and wellness and assisting in the day to day cattle operation. C.J. delivers GAR cattle all across the Great Plains. We depend on his attention to detail and commitment to the welfare of the cattle under his care.

Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.

Calen Bailey was a fall 2020 intern at GAR. After graduation, Calen expressed an interest in gaining “post graduate” experience in minimum till farming and day to day ranch management. She has been a full time member of the GAR team since September 2021. We appreciate Calen’s curiosity and determination to search for the experience she needs to meet her personal goals and willingness to take on any job around the ranch. Calen is unflappable and always searches for the best outcome, regardless of the situation.

ACCELERATION

One of the greatest advantage of decades of disciplined breeding is the genetic acceleration now possible because of genomic data, accurate selection tools, phenotypic performance and carcass data. The charts below illustrate the average EPD percentile rankings and Method Genetic Retained Ownership Income (ROI) of all the GAR bulls sold from September 2022 including the September 2023 offering.

Sept. 2022—Sept. 2023

Average Percentile rankings & Method Genetics ROI

The charts illustrate the average of 2,258 GAR bulls sold in our production sales from September 2022 to the current offering.

EASE

This unparalleled genetic acceleration is the result of more than five decades of using only progeny proved A.I. sires and applying selection pressure, calf crop after calf crop, for calving ease, early growth, moderate stature, maternal function, ribeye and marbling. Mark often says,

“With the influence of genomic data and structured sire evaluation, the confidence in our mating decisions is based on end-product proof. Today, the accuracy of the data enables accelerated and measurable genetic progress. Our disciplined approach to applying selection pressure for calving ease, birth weight, early growth, maternal function, and carcass quality ensures a BALANCE across all traits of economic importance INCLUDING endproduct value without compromising a single trait. Our customers depend upon our discipline.”

The 19Th AnnuAl BullS ThAT Sell

For the 19th Annual Fall Production Sale we have chosen bulls with a wide age range. The sale will feature 252 18-month-old bulls and 200 14-month-old bulls. The majority of the sale bulls are the progeny of 9 different Angus sires. This offering presents bulls with a wide variety of pedigrees and range of ages to fit most off of our bull buyers.

Fifty-two percent of the bulls in the sale are sired by four of our most trusted herd sires: GAR Home Town (113 sons), GAR Transcendent (56 sons), GAR Dual Threat (32 sons) and GAR Kansas (28 sons). However, there are some exciting younger sires that have sons in this sale.

We have a saying, “Pounds pay the bills and QUALITY POUNDS pay more bills.” These bulls will sire calves with the “quality pounds.” You can find the pounds in the sale bulls that rank in the Top 15% of the Angus breed for yearling weight. You can find the quality in the sale bulls that rank in the top 2% of the breed for marbling. Check out the average EPDs for the entire group of sale bulls in the table below.

GAR Average AAA EPDs for the 2023 Fall Sale Bulls

We continue to provide index values from Method Genetics (MG). Using MG indexes allows our customers who perform MG genetic evaluations on their own commercial cattle to compare indexes of our sale bulls directly to the index values in their own herds. Hence, this provides our customers with a unique “tie” to the commercial industry that is not offered by the use of AAA genetic predictions. The average MG index values for the entire group of sale bulls is shown in the table below. The Retained Ownership Index (ROI) is the most complete index we can offer our customers for evaluating bulls. ROI provides a complete production system approach – it incorporates traits from conception through carcass end-points. Unlike other indexes, ROI combines maternal, growth and carcass quality endpoints into one comprehensive index. This makes it the most useful index for selecting bulls to sire replacement females or offspring headed for the feedlot and processing plant.

Customers may ask, “how do I use ROI as a selection tool?” The strategies for using ROI vary, but many of our customers use individual EPDs like calving ease (CED), stature (YH) or milk along with the sale bull’s pedigree to reduce the list of 452 bulls down to a smaller group that meets their primary specifications. Then, rather than considering every other EPD individually, the buyers turn to the ROI index because it combines the effects of all the other traits on dollars per calf produced. That strategy allows each buyer to focus on some individual traits that may be “non-starters” for them, but in the end they rely on the most inclusive index value, ROI, to find the best “all-around athlete” within the group that fits their most important specifications. We have found the ROI index to be the highest correlated tool we have for profit.

This group of sale bulls provides a range of choices among bulls based on ages, pedigrees and individual traits. However, with the whole group averaging in the Top 15% for ROI, there are a lot of “all-around athletes” spread throughout the sale. We hope you find bulls that will work for you.

G A R Home Run

Some may remember little more than a year ago, we first began to talk about genetic acceleration. Decades of disciplined breeding, genomic data and feedlot and carcass closeouts on thousands of head of GAR genetics are proving the reality of this acceleration, changing populations of Angus from average to elite. When we first saw the genetic predictions for Home Run it was “Déjà vu all over again” from when I first saw Home Town, as in OH MY, this is the NEXT LEVEL. Of the many thousands of Home Town progeny, Home Run is the son to take us all to new heights of beef cattle excellence. Home Run was raised by our partner, cooperator and friends at Ogeechee Angus. We believe pedigreed cattle really are a matrix of how cattle are designed to become more beneficial to us as producers, everyone in the production system, the planet, and the consumer. This relationship reminds me of the often-used quote of John Crouch’s “Like Begets Like.” As much as we love cattle, people matter most of all. Clint Smith, Smitty Lamb and Wynder Smith are some of the best people we know. They are true agriculturists and make this world a better place. The Gardiner family would like to thank them for the opportunity to work together in our mutual quest to Make Beef Better. More importantly, the quest to make the world a better place. Wynder Smith, thank you for your example! Home Run is leased to Select Sires. The buyer will be our partner in this lease to Select Sires. No possession sells.

GAR Home Town

n GAR Home Town was the American Angus Association’s #1 high use sire for 2022.

n At the end of 2022, Home Town ranked in the top 10 in total sales out of 108 Gardiner Angus Ranch sires leased to Select Sires, selling just shy of 130,000 units to date.

n Since September 2021, 663 Home Town progeny have sold in eight Gardiner Angus Ranch sales, totaling $6.3 million.

…Genetics

Homegrown is such a great prospect. Quanah has been lecturing all of us about his merits (he is right). When we think of the genetic smorgasbord we have available to us, we, like Goldilocks, want to select and multiply the animals that are “just right.” We believe Homegrown is JUST RIGHT!

Sometimes we think progress is slow, yet when we look at the cattle we are working with today, their genetic predictions were not possible a few years ago. E162 is one of the great prospects in the history of our family. Calving ease, multi-trait excellence, over 2 for marbling and over 1 for RE. Bottom 25% stature, one of the highest Retained Ownership Income (ROI) indexes we have had to date. This bull represents so many things we strive for. He is special!

Remember when we once thought over 1 for Marbling was great? We will average over +2 for marbling soon. Yet, we will never forget to use Henry’s strategy of selecting for calving ease, early growth, end product merit, moderate stature, and the maternal function to replicate this year after year. Pretty simple. We will aggressively continue this selection scheme now and into the future! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.

G A R Home Town L382

L382 is a great son of Home Town. We are very thankful for the Home Town progeny. As a sire he is the best sire to date for our family for all of the traits of magnitude. When I got out of college 40 years ago, I couldn’t fathom the changes for the better the next four decades would bring. We are thankful for the information that allows us all to improve our business, product, but most of all these cattle which make it possible for us to raise our families working together, doing what we love. REVENUE SHARING AND SEMEN INTEREST

You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest. It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.

Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.

If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes.

If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

In Memory of Our Friend, Bernie Smith

The recent loss of Bernie Smith, Captain of the all-volunteer Englewood Fire Department, has left a hole in the heart of our community. Bernie was committed to keeping our rural communities safe through his tireless efforts to recruit and train volunteers and raise funds for equipment, knowing the next wildfire or accident was just around the corner. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Lot 21, Bernie’s firefighter number, will be donated to the Englewood Fire Dept.

A WORD ABOUT FREE DELIVERY

Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. If you would like to insure your cattle, you can do so on sale day. Most of the cattle to be delivered from the sale are delivered within 45 days after the sale. If, for any reason, you desire an expedited delivery, please notify Grant Gardiner at (620) 635-0382 or email grant.c.gardiner@gmail.com and we will make arrangements for quicker delivery.

date. F432’s calf may become even more valuable than her dam. A majority of the females in the offering are sired by Home Town, Transcendent, Dual Threat and Kansas. Bred heifers and cows will be sold individually. These young females are bred to the next generation of super stars, GAR Fireproof, GAR Apex, GAR Home Free and GAR Transcendent. As special as these females are, their calves will be even more valuable!

GAR Commercial Females

This offering of GAR-Influenced bred cows and heifers represent both volume and value. Group 1 is a group of AI bred cows. The cows and heifer are AI bred to elite GAR sires. The females sell with complete Method Genetics EPDs and Indexes. As always, the winning bidder can select the groups he or she would like, taking one group or more groups within a category. The bidder is bidding on the group.

The beef business is good and the forecast for the future is exciting. Our commercial cow-calf customers are using GAR genetics and Method test results with extraordinary success regardless of their chosen end-point. We often talk about the importance of producing “a pound of gold” rather than “a pound of lead.” Our

customers agree.

We have tracked the carcass performance on our customer cattle and our own home raised steers since April 2017 using GAR USPB delivery rights. More than 18,736 head have returned $151.28 premium/hd, totaling $2,834,321 above the base price.

This volume offering of genetically superior commercial females is unique in the beef business and truly a buyer’s opportunity.

Remember, freight is on us as we will deliver these heifers free of charge just like the registered cattle.

Cattle disease traceability is an important component in the overall biosecurity of the U.S. beef cattle industry, playing a significant role in resuming and maintaining commerce in the event of a disease outbreak. The development of a cattle disease traceability system has risen to one of the top priorities in the industry throughout multiple segments of the beef value chain as we witnessed other proteins deeply impacted by disease outbreaks and market disruption.

To address this industry-wide priority, U.S. CattleTrace was established from a collaborative effort of traceability programs across the U.S.

The system for individual animal disease traceability is complex and must be implemented prior to a disease outbreak to be effective. To be successful, the process for cattle producers must be simple, fast and affordable. Proactive participation in U.S. CattleTrace enables producers to be at the forefront of this industry-driven initiative and influence the future of an expanded traceability system in the U.S. beef cattle industry. The purpose-built infrastructure of this system has the potential to open doors to new value-added opportunities in the beef supply chain, including but not limited to: inventory management, animal health management, operational efficiencies, and enhanced domestic and international trade.

In order to protect the U.S. share of the protein market from the potential impact of a disease event, cattle identification and traceability needs to be enacted, enhanced and further developed using electronic I.D. and electronic transfer of data. U.S. CattleTrace is focused on developing a voluntary national traceability system to include all cattle and complement the current USDA regulation s. For this to be successful it will require all stakeholders, which includes producers, suppliers, service providers, packers, retailers, along with state and federal animal health officials to collectively collaborate and support disease traceability.

The goal is to build a system that is recognized as the nationally significant animal disease traceability system by all domestic and foreign markets. The U.S. CattleTrace disease traceability system strives to be equitable to all industry segments and must be industry-driven and managed by a producer board of directors to ensure data privacy and protection.

OUR MISSION

To develop and manage a nationally significant, robust and globally accepted voluntary animal disea se traceability system for all cattle entering commerce through an industry led, sustainable, non-profit private enterprise in order to protect the nation’s herd and U.S. share of the protein market with as little disruption to day- to-day operations as possible.

OUR VISION

To be a producer-driven and national leader in animal disease traceability, providing a data management system for rapid animal disease response that is fully accepted by U.S producers and global consumers.

COMPREHENSIVE Customer Service

True customer service isn’t a checklist, it’s a mentality.

In business, customer service is either dos and don’ts or it’s the business’s business. If you’ve had any interactions with the Gardiner family, I’m guessing you know which train the Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) rides.

Gardiners are committed to their customers’ success. Every customer service option/program/guarantee is a function of that commitment.

Now, while lots of companies claim to have their customers’ success in mind, few actually follow through. No one from Nike® has ever called me up and asked me how my ball game’s going or how they could help me improve. Obviously, that’s probably never going to happen, but wouldn’t it be cool if it did!

The thing is, that happens every day at GAR.

Henry’s Rule

Henry’s rule is the golden rule, says Mark Gardiner, and it’s how we try to deal with everything.

Gardiner’s customer service (success) strategy begins with treating every customer/potential customer as equals. Every print ad or sale book produced for GAR for many years lists the BASIC customer services available when a beef producer invests in GAR genetics. There are no qualifiers. A buyer that purchases one head is extended the same customer service as the volume buyer.

Buy one or 10; they all come with a guarantee.

The GAR Guarantee is arguably one of the strongest live animal guarantees in the business. “We pledged on Day 1, when we sold our first bull at our first sale, ‘If you have a problem, we’ll take care of it,’” says Mark.

The GAR Guarantee covers bulls and females for 12 months regardless of what happens, whose fault it was or the part Mother Nature played.

“If the animal leaves here and doesn’t work for the customers, then they’re not going to come back, and if you tell them to buzz off, they will,” says Grant Gardiner.

“Taking care of it” means a replacement or a credit at the next sale. You can forget about playing the blame game because they won’t ask.

“Most of the time, it’s things that are out of our control, and most of the time it’s out of the control of the customer, too,” Grant recognizes.

Gardiners not only offer the guarantee, they plan for it. With current bull sale numbers, that typically equates to 200+ bulls being replaced, notes Mark. That’s obviously expensive, but anyone that has ever had a problem will tell you they’ve never known

Gardiner Angus Ranch • Page 144

him to question a customer.

“People have their opinions, and we appreciate that,” says Mark, “but you’ll never hear that we didn’t honor our commitment and take care of somebody.”

Cole Gardiner shares his dad’s mindset. It’s not about replacing the animal, says Cole, it’s about replacing the genetic potential.

“If a private treaty bull breaks down, generally speaking, it’s very easy for me to find a replacement,” he says. But when customers call about a sale animal, Cole doesn’t cut corners.

“I’ll just be honest with them, if they bought a bull that is tremendous, my advice would be just take full credit on that animal because it’ll be a better value for you, and you’ll be able to get something closer to what you want.”

Let’s not forget, the GAR guarantee covers females, too. If a female doesn’t get bred fast enough (AI and bull cover), aborts a pregnancy for whatever reason or something else goes wrong in the first year, you can bet Cole will “take care of it.”

“None of us are in this by ourselves. It’s got to be win-win. God’s plan is that we make it better and help each other.” — Mark Gardiner

GAR offers free delivery on every purchase. Gardiners will deliver cattle to 48 states. One bull even went to Hawaii. Call them the Amazon of cattle, but Gardiners recognize that cattle producers are busy and aside from cash on hand, time is their most tightly stretched asset.

“We work with several good outfits,” explains Grant. “They’ve hauled thousands of cattle for us, hundreds of thousands of miles.”

It’s Grant’s task to work out transportation logistics. Health certificates last 30 days post-sale, so he works quickly and leans on his experts.

“You leave it in the hands of people that know what they are doing. These guys know places to unload, to feed and water the cattle. They have been doing this for years,” he says. Eventually, the cattle arrive safe and sound to their new home, wherever that is.

On that note, Cole reminds us, if a customer doesn’t like the bull upon arrival, he has docility issues, whatever, Gardiner’s will “take care of it!”

Every GAR customer enjoys two more services: a 5% repeat buyer discount and $100 off the purchase price if they pick up the animal within two weeks of the sale.

“The benefit of it is a loyalty deal,” notes Grant. “You establish a customer base and hope they come back and give them some incentive to come back.”

Make it a win-win

It’s a no brainer to say Gardiners are successful and they have great genetics, but maybe, great genetics aren’t the reason they are successful. Maybe the source of their success is deeper. Maybe the source is their willingness to let others succeed.

One of Mark’s mantras is, “Instead of a skin thy neighbor approach, let’s have a win-win, and we can all do better and we have.”

The sharing of U.S. Premium Beef (USPB) delivery rights is a perfect example of creating win-wins for customers. For 25 years, Gardiners have let customers use a number of their USPB delivery rights at no charge — typical cost to lease rights would be $9-10/head. Customers who retain ownership on finished cattle without direct grid access use these rights to be rewarded for their investments. Keep in mind, GAR finishes out their own cattle and purchases several thousand head of customers’ cattle through their calf buyback program

Why share access to a grid that has garnered GAR $98/head on 134,000 head above the base price since 1998 and averaged $232 above the base price in the last year?

Well, says Mark, “We care about your success because if you don’t succeed, we don’t either.”

Gardiner Angus Ranch • Page 145

What is success?

According to Mark, Grant and Cole, success is being profitable in the cattle business. “If I can keep [customers] in business, then we have a chance to do the same,” says Mark. “That relationship matrix where we can make sure they make money is so important!”

Since 2014, all GAR cattle (registered and commercial) have been genetic-tested with Method Genetics, one of the top four genetic databases in the world. Customers are given the option to genetic test their herds with Method Genetics. DNA samples are submitted to both the American Angus Association (AAA) and Method Genetics.

“The idea is to be able to predict genetic performance for commercial cattle, so we can benchmark with each other,” explains Mark.

The benefits to commercial and registered customers is three-fold. First, they quickly understand their herd’s standing in regards to a more select population than just the entire AAA (especially important for registered customers).

“When you’re going against the entire Angus database vs. a highly selected database like Method, which is primarily us and our customers, it’s a faster track,” says Mark, “I always joke, ‘Did you play at Ashland Jr. High or did you play in the NFL? What was the competition.’”

Second, it accelerates customers’ purchasing power as they can quickly determine what cattle will improve their herd’s genetics.

Third, those customers who test their herds using Method, truly identify those heifers worth multiplying and increase the marketability of the rest.

“Revenue sharing semen interest is something we’ve done for as long as I can remember,” says Grant. “It’s just our way of actually protecting our interest in the cattle that we sell.” It’s rarely used, but in the case of GAR Dual Threat, who was sold through the sale, it became a valuable tool that turned profitable for both the customer, JLB Ranch, GAR and Select Sires Inc.

Marketing and purchasing assistance. “I probably talk to 15 people a day — mainly customers,” notes Mark. “I work

with them a lot on what it is they want to achieve.” That means mentoring other seedstock or hopeful seedstock producers: handing over the GAR mailing list, getting a bull to a stud facility to be collected, etc.

It’s connecting cattle sellers with buyers. Mark maintains a contact list of order buyers and informs them when GAR-influenced cattle are up for sale. For reference, the 6,000 head of GAR-influenced cattle that sold on Superior last year averaged $10/cwt. above the same class, same cattle, same area as the competition.

It means helping people make the right purchasing decisions; oftentimes, keeping them from spending too much.

“We always do everything we can to moderate the average price of the sale because a lot of times our prices have scared people off,” Mark quips.

He reminds his customers that the most expensive or the best animal may not be best for you. The idea is sustained success across all customer price points, so before you get what Mark calls “Angus fever,” give him a call and have him check your temperature.

Anticipating needs, solving problems

“I love to listen to what you are trying to achieve. What is your experience. What is your background,” says Mark of his conversations with customers.

When asked, “How do you relate with your customers?” He responds like this:

“I talk to them every day, and I’m on their place, and I try to solve their problems. They have to be able to access you, and they have to be able to touch you, and you have to feel their pain and you have to ensure they have success.”

When a commercial customer wants to start retaining ownership on their cattle, Gardiners assist in forming feedlot relationships. “We have to find the right place for them to feed their cattle,” says Mark.

High-powered genetics require management with experience to maximize their potential and just any ole’ feedlot will not do. Mark’s long-time relationships with large and small USPB cattle feeders and the cattle producers providing inventory is something he works hard at every day. It’s his relationship matrix.

G3 Age & Source was born shortly after the BSE scare in 2003. Today, there are only two major beef supplying countries in the world that don’t have mandatory traceback systems, the United States and India. G3 allows producers to track their cattle back to GAR, it garners premiums on sale day and ensures the sustainability of the U.S. cow herd.

This isn’t a complete list of all the service Gardiners do for their customers. The behind-the-scenes work they do could fill this catalog, oh actually it has. Check out the cattle on the following pages for proof. For Gardiners, it isn’t about a list. It’s about doing business in a way that ensures your business is profitable, sustainable and enjoyable.

BATTLE TESTED

Identifying & Capturing Value

Recently Steve Hunt, one of my best friends and battle tested leader, was awarded the Certified Angus Beef 2023 Industry Achievement Award for his U.S. Premium Beef leadership. I want to personally thank Steve Hunt for leading us to industry changes that gave our family, and so many other families, the opportunity to succeed. Due to the success of U.S. Premium Beef, we learned what made money for our new partner, the processing company, and allowed us to grow and develop a strategy for GAR’s succeeding generations. This blueprint of knowledge allowed us to design cattle that worked on the ranch while simultaneously satisfying consumer expectations, which increased beef demand. Today, the future of Gardiner Angus Ranch, and our industry, is based on a model of designing beef cattle with more value. Largely due to Steve’s leadership, there are systems in place to identify and capture value.

The history of U.S. Premium Beef is well documented. Much has been written about the state of the beef market from the mid-1980s to 1997, when the first load of USPB cattle was delivered to our new industry partner, National Beef. Loss of market share due to poor and inconsistent quality was at the top of the list of serious problems that needed to be addressed. Arguably, the larger problem was the reality that producers were not invested in necessary changes that could only begin in their pastures. It was easy to blame others. The standard reply was “nobody pays us,” which was accurate. But the larger, systemic problem, was lack of an infrastructure to create a consistent supply, identify carcasses with more value and determine the added value

based on current market dynamics. Quite frankly, we were concerned about the future of the beef Industry. We knew we needed to make a “skin in the game” investment in our future. Hence, we bought into beef processing. Nothing was possible without a willingness to negotiate with all industry stakeholders and compromise. Sitting at the table as owners, working together with our packing plant management team

Gardiner Angus Ranch • Page 147

was such a key to our success. We teamed up with processing to design “a win-win” company.

Nearly three decades ago, Steve and I, and our cohorts on the “Blue Sky Tour” were young men. Some even thought foolish young men. As pioneers we realized that not all trailblazers succeed. Truth was, we were afraid. I returned home to Gardiner Angus Ranch, the only job I ever wanted, and worked alongside my dad, Henry Gardiner. I knew he was seriously concerned about the future of the beef industry. Gardiner Angus Ranch had been a total A.I. and ET program for many years and had been successful in working with several large commercial beef operations across the U.S. Other than the limited anecdotal data, we did not have the necessary tools to make documented progress nor an infrastructure to discover and reward value-added cattle. WE DID NOT KNOW WHAT MADE MONEY! We learned.

I believe it is important to communicate to the next generation of decision makers the significance of where we were prior to U.S. Premium Beef. — Mark Gardiner

When the first load of U.S. Premium Beef cattle was delivered to National Beef in December 1997, fed cattle were trading in the mid-$60’s and break-evens were projected at $70-$72. Placements were 2% higher than the year before. Beef demand was described as “lethargic.” Growing up in livestock production, Steve Hunt possessed the inherent ability to understand the beef industry’s problems across all production sectors. His Land Grant education in finance at K-State armed him with the unique skills to communicate with producers over a cup of coffee or present our strategic plan to the upper echelon of finance on Wall Street. To this day, I don’t know of anyone that could have been successful besides Steve Hunt. He knew the beef industry had to change. Steve developed a plan, assembled a team with the carved in stone mantra, “failure is not an option.”

I believe it is important to communicate to the next generation of decision makers the significance of where we were prior to U.S. Premium Beef. Simply said we were an industry in decline with a challenging future.

Steve often referenced one of his favorite books, Good to Great. Jim Collins, author of one of the best-selling management books of all time said, “The good-to-great leaders never wanted to become larger-than-life heroes. They never aspired to be put on a pedestal or become unreachable icons. They were seemingly ordinary people quietly producing extraordinary results.” Steve, I am thankful to call you my friend. I am grateful for your mentorship and leadership.

Another reference from Good to Great that appropriately describes our journey is referenced as the “Flywheel Effect.” This effect is described as taking people to work together to turn this massive wheel. It takes time to turn the wheel, but after consistent effort you make a revolution, then the next revolution happens faster, and faster until ultimately the mass of the flywheel is working for you! This is called BREAKTHROUGH!! This is what U.S Premium Beef did and continues to do. Steve Hunt, we thank you for helping our industry BREAKTHROUGH!

The Gardiner family is profoundly grateful for your vision and commitment to initiating change.

Ashland Veterinary Center, Inc. Serving in Every Way

Growing a practice and supporting the community

Why Ashland, Kansas? Why raise a family in a community of 800 people? Why do a job that requires not only “on-call” services but also “in-any-kind-of-weather”? Why work in a job field with the tightest of profit margins, life or death scenarios and sometimes stubborn, uncooperative patients, who, by the way, don’t speak our language? Why pay for a doctorate degree and develop a career as a large or mixed-animal veterinarian when some would title the profession as a dying breed?

The answer is simple. They do it because they love it!

Like the veterinarians who built the practice and its nationally-renowned reputation, Ashland Veterinary Center, Inc.’s Dr. Kelly Deewall and Dr. Mark Spare are cut from the same fabric. Deewall just passed a 20 year milestone and Mark officially joined the AVC team after his 2021 graduation from vet school.

Making a Home

Established in the early ’90s, Dr. Randall Spare and Dr. John Kellenberger had to prove their dedication, grit and an unwavering commitment to their clients. They needed to grow Ashland Vet into a practice that could sustain veterinarians, their families, and become a vibrant member of the business community. Just like their mentors, Kelly and Mark have the same passion for quality veterinary care with rural pragmatism. What’s more, they have the same laser focus on making the community of Ashland the best it can be. Deep Kansas roots tie both Mark and Kelly to the land and to the community.

Randall and his wife Michelle raised their five children in Ashland. Likewise, John and his wife Angie raised their three kids here, too.

Working and raising a family all in the same community seems to level up a person’s work, life and play goals. All of a sudden, career success means less or nothing if the academic success of the community’s children is lacking. Community services for residents become more of a priority and socioeconomic progress is critical. In a community of 800 people, that means everyone plays a part and probably has a part in the school’s play. That’s probably why both Randall and John have served on multiple boards and community positions throughout the years.

Keeping with tradition, Kelly currently serves on the school board.

“Part of living in a community and wanting it to thrive is being willing to take on some of those positions that maybe are out of your comfort zone, but you do it for the good of not only your kids but the good of the entire community’s children,” she says.

Kelly recognizes Ashland as an active community, family oriented and one that people would love to live in, if they knew it existed.

“We’re trying to maintain and grow out here in the boonies. We’re 50 miles from Walmart and that freaks some people out!” she laughs.

Kelly says she loves the landscape of Ashland. “I don’t like trees, so it’s perfect!” But in all seriousness, Kelly has put down roots in this Kansas clay. Her husband, Nathan Shupe, is a rancher—they met at the vet clinic — and are raising their daughter here.

For Mark, working and living in Ashland, the town he was raised in, is literally a dream come true.

“It’s a privilege for me to be able to relocate my family in Ashland, Kansas, and I have a huge appreciation for the way the community has brought us back in and allowed us to plug in,” he explains.

Mark moved his family—wife Kayla and their three daughters—back to Ashland in August of 2022. Other than being close to his parents, he appreciates the generations of friends he still has here.

“The number of people that are still here that were here when I grew up is a draw for me. Even though I may have been a

handful when I was being raised, they are excited to see my kids and the way they are going to grow up, and they care for them, and they want them to succeed,” says Mark.

What truly makes Ashland unique, though, is the values of her people. It’s hard to ignore the impact the 2017 wildfire had on the people. “That galvanized the community,” Mark notes. “We learned to watch out for each other.”

“Those are the lessons that I know that when we’re not with our girls, when we don’t have them at home, those are lessons that I know are being taught.”

What’s Next

A great team not only has talent but is diverse in their individual expertise. All the vets agree, what makes the Ashland Vet Center team valuable is their ability to be jacks of all trades, while offering expanded specialty services to their clients.

All four doctors practice general veterinary medicine on a daily basis in the clinic and when on-call, expanding the team has allowed each veterinarian to dig a little deeper into their specialties.

• Randall — beef reproduction

• John — equine reproduction

• Kelly — small animal medicine

• Mark — beef nutrition

“We all do everything. We all do what needs to be done,” says Kelly. “At this point, I do most of the small animal work, which I really enjoy. I love to do surgery. But I enjoy having opportunities to do mixed animal practice. I would hate the thought of being inside all day everyday doing that.”

Having four veterinarians, says Mark, allows the clinic to spend time addressing the more in-depth needs of its clients.

“We all have the flexibility to set and adjust our own schedules, so that if we need to spend a half or whole day with a client, we can do that,” he says.

An added benefit of an expanded team is an improved worklife balance from an on-call standpoint, says John. In an era of rural, large animal veterinarian shortages, capturing a higher quality of life is critical to maintaining industry personnel. It may be a model other clinics follow as time goes on.

Exceeding Expectations

Something existing clients have come to expect and new clients quickly appreciate is Ashland Vet’s practical approach to high-quality medicine. Randall and John have spent their careers providing that kind of care, and it’s something Kelly and Mark won’t compromise on either.

Raised on a beef operation in Oklahoma, Kelly knew at an early age she wanted to be a veterinarian. Early on in her

practice, she realized veterinary medicine is really about people first, animals second. That principal has shaped the last 20 years of her career and greatly contributed to the work-life culture at AVC.

For her part, she says, “I want people to know their options and pick what works best for them, for their animal, for their emotions, for their finances, so that everybody is satisfied in the end and that animal gets the help that it needs.”

Mark grew up riding in the vet truck with his dad. He’s seen firsthand the responsibility veterinarians take on when they accept the call to care for people and their animals. After a few adventures and some life experience, he chose the veterinarian profession and sealed it with a promise:

“The reputation that Ashland Veterinary Clinic has is that we’re going to answer our phone. When we get a call, we’re going to take care of you. If we don’t know the answer, we’re going to find it out,” he states.

The idea, says Mark, is to help clients A) succeed and B) grow their operations.

Mark joined Ashland Vet in August of 2022.

As the team continues to settle in and fine tune roles and responsibilities, the goal is to expand the offering of technical services, all while continuing to build trust in the community and region. Currently, the clinic sees clients from 13 Kansas counties, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Missouri. It’s a wide area to say the least.

Trust is built, says Kelly, by taking those hard cases or emergency calls no matter the convenience.

We get calls, she says, from people with a dog that has been throwing up for three days and their vet can’t see them for two weeks.

“We’re going to work you in, even if you have to wait, if we have to stay late, whatever. We’re going to get that animal seen,” she says. “Yet, we still want to have time to practice quality medicine with them.”

While high-quality care and the latest medical techniques are critical to the practice, they also evolve, says Mark, that’s why it’s called “practicing.” He says he keeps that in mind because he wants to always be improving the care people and animals receive from Ashland Vet.

“In five years, I’m going to look back on a certain technique and think, ‘I did that wrong.’ In reality, everything that we do is wrong because it’s not perfect, but it’s still fun to be a part of, and it’s cultivating that excitement about going to work every day and learning. Learning about how I was wrong yesterday, but I can be better today, allows us to think about getting better as opposed to being perfect. I have much respect for the culture of AVC and owe that to John, my dad and Kelly.”

When it comes down to it, John says, we’re in the business of taking care of people. Kelly Deewall and Mark Spare are not only good people, but they are also tremendous practitioners.

“They are going to care about the people that we serve. They both have different interests, passions, skillsets. At the end of the day, the people we serve benefit.”

Editor’s note: Dr. Eva Gardiner, certified in veterinary acupuncture, provides specialized acupuncture treatment on a part time basis. GLOSSARY OF TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

MATERNAL

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

RU Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rump fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rump fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rump fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rump fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.

BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.

Calving-Ease Score: 1 = unassisted; 2 = some assistance; 3 = mechanical assistance.

METHOD GENETICS® CHOICE EPD AND SELECTION INDEX KEY

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.

MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.

DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.

MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.

QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.

RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.

METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.

THE GARDINER ANGUS RANCH BREEDING GUARANTEE

We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Gardiner Angus Ranch, both bulls and females, are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If a bull is injured at any time in the 12 months following the sale so as to make them functionally infertile, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. If a female is determined to be a non-breeder, then we would ask you to sell her and would offer you the difference of her purchase price minus the salvage value as a credit in any future GAR sale. This guarantee is in addition to the Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which also apply.

The Method Matters

The Method Genetics index values are derived from Method Genetics EPDs combined with industry-focused economic weightings. The Method EPDs are generated from a multi-trait, ‘single-step’ genetic evaluation that uses performance measures, ancestral pedigree, and

available DNA genotypes. This single-step approach incorporates the genotypes directly into the genetic evaluation process and was implemented at Method in the summer of 2014.
