PETER KING LOTS 1801 - 1807 Peter was born 11/08/1940 in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England. He began learning clarinet and saxophone as a teenager and was entirely self-taught. His formative musical inspiration was the 1940’s musical genius and inventor of bebop, Charlie Parker whom he studied and absorbed before developing and perfecting his own style. In 1959 aged 19, he was booked by Ronnie Scott to perform at the opening of Scott's club in Gerrard Street, London. That same year, he received the Melody Maker New Star award. He was a member of the Johnny Dankworth orchestra from 1960 to 1961 before working with the big bands of Maynard Ferguson, Tubby Hayes, Harry South, and Stan Tracey and touring with the Ray Charles band. Other credits include performances and recordings with many jazz legends including Philly Joe Jones, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Red Rodney, Hampton Hawes, Nat Adderley, Al Haig, and legendary singers including Jimmy Witherspoon, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, and Anita O'Day. His powerful and exuberant bebop style coupled with great technical facility, often led to comparisons with the style of his close friend the American alto saxophonist Phil Woods, but in reality King's playing was becoming increasingly personal and distinctive even within the bebop idiom. He appeared on the soundtrack of the 1969 film The Italian Job and 30 years later on the soundtrack to The talented Mr Ripley. Peter also recorded albums with Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts’ big band and jazz Quintet. The early 1990s saw his style mature, becoming highly confident and original, extending far beyond his initial Parker influences and absorbing harmonic and structural ideas from his favourite classical composer Bela Bartok. King flourished both as an improviser and a composer and found new ways of combining jazz and classical techniques without diluting either. Some notable albums include Tamburello (recorded in 1994), Lush Life (recorded 1998) and Janus[4] with the Lyric String Quartet which included a 1997 suite strongly influenced by Bartok. This was commissioned by Appleby Jazz Festival to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3. In 2005, Peter King won the BBC 'Jazz musician of the Year' award. Peter also made appearances on albums by the pop group Everything But The Girl and on North Marine Drive by Ben Watt, founder member of that iconic group. In 2012, he appeared in the documentary film, No One But Me, discussing jazz vocalist Annie Ross. In April 2011, Northway published Peter King’s autobiography Flying High. It was widely praised for its candour and honesty about his musical career and personal life, his international associations in the jazz world, and the many years in which he battled with addiction. In addition to his world standing as a musician, Peter King was also a leading figure in the international aero-modelling world. He competed successfully in major competitions and wrote extensively about the subject. His other passion was Formula One motor racing which inspired his 1994 album Tamburello. This contains a four-part composition as a tribute to Ayrton Senna. His playing has inspired two generations of young saxophonists worldwide. 24 24

*This violin is sold with a French nickel mounted violin bow stamped Ch. Buthod á Paris and another nickel mounted violin bow, unstamped. This violin is being sold by the daughter of her late father and she has written a moving tribute below about him and the violin. Christopher Sheppard (1941-2018) Lead Violinist (RadioLight Orchestra) multi-instrumentalist, conductor, music lecturer and artist. Christopher was extraordinarily talented both as a musician and an artist. His early life was, like all those born during the war, challenging and difficult. Forced to join the Royal Marines School of Music at 14, Chris rose to lead violin under Sir Vivian Dunn in three years which began his lifelong career as a performing artist. After 25 years in the services, a lifetime’s experience as a worldwide musician, conductor including the position of band master of the Ark Royal in 1977 (featuring in the TV series ‘Sailor’) He retired to Devon where he took the lead in The Radio Light Orchestra and as a session musician playing all the shows in the Theatre Royal (Plymouth), teaching and composing music. The love of his life was his beautiful violin (one might have said it was his obsession) which he played daily, permeating the walls of his house with his favourite tunes from the Max Bruch Concerto in G minor to Shostakovich’s most moody concertos. His friends nick named him ‘Shosta’ which said it all. As his daughter, my love for the violin was sadly lacking having had to endure endless practice as a child every morning from 5am. However, now he has departed, I miss his beautiful playing and the enchanting sound he created with his Lupot violin. My hope is that hisviolin will find a worthy owner who loves it as much as my Father did. £4000-8000 GARDINER HOULGATE
