Yerevan: The city older than Rome

O

fficially the 12th capital of Armenia celebrates its 2798 birthday this month. The birth date is calculated from 782 BC when king of Urartu Argishti the first built Erebuni fortress on Arin Berd and wrote an inscription “By the greatness of the God Khaldi, Argishti, son of Menua, built this mighty stronghold and proclaimed it Erebuni for the glory of Biainili (Urartu) and to instill fear among the king’s enemies’’ and this became the cities birth certificate. If you

want to see the inscription and go back to the centuries, visit Erebuni museum or Armenian History Museum. Now you will think what Erebuni and Yerevan have in equal? These are different names of the same city, some scholars said that the word “Erebuni” (meaning “victory”) undergone changes and became Yerevan.

10 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Others said that the word Yerevan is related with the great flood after which Noah’s ark landed on the Mount Ararat. “It appeared (Yerevats)’’ was Noah’s exclamation when he first saw the land. No matter what definitions are given to the city’s name, nevertheless it bursts with ancient history, culture and habits which together make a marvelous city full with tufa stone buildings, amazing parks and dancing fountains, typical Armenian architecture and hospitable people who make the core of the nation, and of course the cuisine which is a must for every visitor to taste especially during the festive period… Don’t miss the celebration events of Erebuni-Yerevan, join the fascination ceremonies being held in different parts of the city on 8 October. Feel Yerevan, breathe the air filled with the highest mood…

Legends and myths of Armenia

Tatev monastery and the movable column

T

atev monastery, one of the cultural prides of Armenian heritage, built in the 10th century, boasts with its marvelous beauty and historical value. Here are some legends connected with it. One of the legends is connected with the origin of the name “Tatev”. According to it, the name “Tatev” is formed from the phrase “ta tev” (give wings). The legend says “After the end of construction, the Master called the workers to give two pieces of wood. Getting them, master kissed them and said “holy spirit give wings’’. At that vary moment wings appeared on his back and the master flew away to the unknown direction. The workers couldn’t finish the construction of the monastery. After some period of time hearing that master is in Konstaninoupolis, people try to ask the master come back to help finish the construction, but he refused only giving hints how to finish. So the name Tatev is said to be due to the expression exclaimed by the master “Holy spirit give wings”. Tatev is an amazing complex composed of different structures and buildings. One of the most famous structures is stony Gavazan (crosier) column built in 904 being 8 meters in height; the column is devoted to the holy Trinity. So, besides etymological legends, there are also ones which speak out about the monastery’s holy features. One of them concerns Lang

14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Timur’s invasions. While invading Armenia, he wanted to destroy Tatev monastery in particular the movable stony Gavazan (crosier) column. He ordered his troops to pull the column with the help of two buffalos. As soon as the buffalos started pulling, the chain broke and they fell into the gorge. Seeing that, Lang Timur left the monastery. Now you will think, why did Timur want to destroy the movable column, what power did it have? According to one of the hypothesis, the movable structure of the column was aimed to help the residents to know about the coming invasions or earthquakes, because in any case the column started moving. Unfortunately, because of 1931s earthquake the movable structure was damaged and till nowadays it’s not fully repaired and restored.

ARMENIA: THE BEST PLACE FOR MEDICAL TOURISM Nowadays considerable numbers of tourists visit Armenia to get qualified and not expensive medical treatment. I think, this is a great achievement for our country, because now we can feel proud of not only the tourist’s arrivals, but also of our professional doctors who are not few in Armenia, and it’s not accidental that many students from different angles of the world arrive in Armenia to study at Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi; a prominent scientist of the 12th century. Though Armenia is listed among small countries, nevertheless the medicine is rapidly developing, and the medical centers don’t save money to apply latest generation medical equipments, and the specialists regularly attend courses of professional trainings in the leading medical establishments as well as present our country with honor in different famous conferences and professional gatherings. I can confidently say that many Armenian doctors use more modern 22 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

equipments than many of their international colleagues. Health care prices are one of the most important factors which make our country more attractive for tourists. That’s the reason why many tourists would rather get on a plane, come to Armenia, live in a hotel, get treatment and return their hometown, than visit a doctor in their country. The prices for surgery are nearly 40-50% lower in Armenia, than in North America or Western European cities, which makes Armenian medicine more competitive. Armenia especially attracts the patients who need dental and surgical operations. For instance many tourists having arrived in Armenia for teeth implantation, at the same time whiten their teeth, treat them and etc. All necessary infrastructures are built for tourism: the best international hotel chains have established their branches here with their congress halls, traditional and nontraditional restaurants, exhibition halls and modern means of transport. Even the most remote resorts are provided with high-speed internet connection. In Armenia tourists can find variety of interests: active leisure lovers can go hiking in sightseeing, mountains or landscapes, see the oldest cathedrals and churches hidden in the mountains, tourists who love culture can go to the theatres, exhibitions, museums, for nightlife lovers a bulk of night clubs, loungecafes and bars are open. It’s worth mentioning, that Armenia is in the list of the safest countries in the world, and Yerevan exceeds many North American and western European cities with its level of safety, which isn’t less important for the tourists visiting our country because here they can safely stroll along the streets and not feel afraid, as well as if necessary get the citizens’ help and support. Eventually, Armenia is a small Caucasian country with an ancient history, rich cultural heritage and marvelous natural wonders. Armenia is not only the oldest country of the region but also of the whole world, and besides getting qualified medical treatment, here you will see many interesting, unusual and amazing things and phenomenon, get acquainted with objects yet unknown to others.
