INDEPENDENCE DAY OF ARMENIA SEPTEMBER 21
Independence and sovereignty is highly valued and celebrated in any country of the world. Armenia is no exception. Independence is sacred to Armenians. September 21st marks the 30th year of Armenia’s Independence. On this very special occasion, let us reflect on the history of the Armenian Independence. Armenia has gained its first independence on May 28, 1918, with the formation of the First Republic of Armenia. However, a short while afterwards – in 1920, the Bolsheviks took the lead. As the majority of you know, Armenia has been a member of the Soviet Union from 1920 to 1991. Those were years of relative peace for Armenia, but communism, totalitarian regime with speech and privacy restrictions, suppressions and exiles dominated. Religion was mainly banned. Private ownership was also prohibited. MarxismLeninism was the ideology behind the system. Probably all of the above mentioned will seem to you as hell nowadays, but if you happen to talk to older generations in Armenia who have lived at least 10 years in the Soviet era, you’ll find it interesting to hear them saying: “Soviet was a good time, we could live life, we could rest and travel to other countries easily.
30 year
s
On August 23, 1990, Soviet Armenia adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty proclaiming the Armenian SSR abolished and the establishment of the Republic of Armenia. Armenia refused to sign the New Union Treaty. On September 21, 1991, Armenian people voted in favor of independence from the Soviet Union in a referendum. Formally, Armenia became independent on December 26, when the USSR was ultimately dissolved. Since then, the Independence Day has been publicly celebrated throughout the whole country – both in Yerevan and the regions, and the Diaspora in foreign countries, containing a bright pallet of events: national awards, military parades, open-air concerts, performances at educational institutions, marches in the streets, etc. In addition, many world-known institutions and commercial structures have lit their buildings with the Armenian tricolor flag as a sign of congratulation, such as Ottawa City Hall, Burj Khalifa, Tbilisi TV Broadcasting Tower, Argentina National Flag Memorial, Niagara Falls, etc. This year, no official statements have been released about celebrations by the Armenian Government yet, most probably regarding the Covid-19 and post-war situation in Armenia. However, you can still make your way to the Republic Square in the evening, watch the dancing fountains and enjoy your time together with the INDEPENDENT Armenian people.

Armenia’s Blue-Eyed Beauty & Her Magic history and facts
If you ask an Armenian, “What’s your favorite place to visit in the summer,” “Lake Sevan” will be the answer for the majority of cases. Don’t worry, September is also suitable for visiting it, as the cutting sun and heat convert into a softer and gentle weather. But firstly, let’s get acquainted with Lake Sevan. Lake Sevan or “Sevana Lich”, as called by the locals, is Armenia’s “gem” and “jewelry”, people also call it the “Blue-Eyed Beauty” of Armenia. It is personalized as a feminine character in Armenian literature. Tranquility, peace and magnetic attraction are said to be her main features, and believe us, you’ll say the same when you visit her. Lake Sevan lies 1,900 m above sea level in a mountain-enclosed basin. The total surface of its basin is about 5,000 km2, making up the 1/6th of Armenia’s territory. It is the second largest freshwater high-altitude (alpine) lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America. The water of the lake was heavily used for irrigation and hydroelectric power during the Soviet period, which caused decrease of the total surface of the lake and, as provided by the environmentalists, Sevan was on the brink of destruction. However, several projects were implemented to save the lake, which are now ongoing. 22 | TourInfo
This lake has historically always been in the territory of Armenia. Several Armenian and foreign historiographers and travelers have mentioned about it in their works, such as Friedrich Parrot, a Baltic-German naturalist and an explorer, Jean Chardin, French jeweler and traveler, etc. The surrounding area of Lake Sevan has a major historical significance, as it has been one of the oldest habitats of ethnic Armenians. The area is being examined by archaeologists from the Soviet era until today. The historical monuments include Cyclopean masonry, crossstones, graveyards, medieval churches and monasteries, pit-houses, etc. The lake provides not only the significant part of drinkable water, but also 90% of the fish catch in Armenia. The main types are Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan), which is endemic to the lake, but is endangered because of other types of fish introduced to the lake, and common whitefish. In 1978 Sevan National Park was established with the aim to provide a safer habitat for the species residing at Lake Sevan and its surrounding area, as well as preserving the quality of the water and the lake’s ecosystem. If you want to flatter the local Sevanians, then call Sevan a ‘sea’, not a ‘lake’. It will show your respect and astonishment towards the beauty.

Medical Tourism Accreditation in the Post-COVID-19 Era The COVID-19 pandemic impacted tourist business on global scale dramatically. The medical tourism always was considered as the most stable and the least subjected to external circumstances. However, spreading of coronavirus infection shortened both number of arrivals and volume of medical services provided within the framework of their export. Now, as travel is slowly returning to normal, medical travelers have new expectations from a medical tourist destination - these patients now not only seek quality and affordability of medical care but also a medical travel destination that has put in place adequate measures to safeguard their health, given the COVID-19 pandemic. Aesthetic surgery, dentistry are among the main directions of medical tourism in Armenia. However, recently another direction has also been revealed – the vaccinations against COVID-19, Deputy Minister of Healthcare Gevorg Simoyan told. These days we are witnessing the acceleration of medical tourism specially, aesthetic surgeries and hair transplantations. Today, the field appears to be well-known, hugely-developed and highly recommended, is hair transplantation. United Hair Clinic plays an important role to introducing Armenia as a professional hair restoration destination to applicants from United States ,Canada and many European countries which this procedures are too expensive. 24 | TourInfo
First thing to mention about Armenia’s hair transplantation is the quality it provides. Many experienced and clever professionals from different countries get attracted by Armenia, its medical system and the developing hair transplantation field, deciding to continue their activity in Armenia. The second things is that hair transplantation in Armenia is comparably cheaper than in other countries, and this causes people to choose Armenia. Armenia is a perfect touristic center and the wide range of sightseeing will make your trip not only “Just a trip for treatment”, but “A trip for treatment + enjoyment + perfect memories”. Visit Armenia, obtain healthy body and healthy mind!
Kalavan ‘‘Time-Land”
Economic Engine for a Fading Village in Armenia Kalavan, a modest untouched village dashing towards an exceptional success, is located in Gegharkunik Region, Armenia. Isolated from civilization – no motorways, no shops, no luxury hotels and restaurants – Kalavan is a top eco, adventure and archaeological tourism attraction in Armenia. The village has graveyards and Stone Age outdoor stations in the surroundings. In addition, the forest is home to beautiful wildlife – squirrels, least weasel, roe deer, wildcat, badger, etc. The archaeological monument Kalavan 1 dates back to the 14th millennium, and Kalavan 2 is more than 34 thousand years old. The credit for pioneering this journey towards a positive result goes to Robert Ghukasyan, who chased his dream of enlivening the fading village of Kalavan, which had only a hundred residents. The development model Robert offered was graciously welcomed by World Vision Armenia and since the very beginning to present the organization has backed the initiative. The model also became an economic engine for Kalavan and the surrounding villages. Due to the selfless efforts of the “Time Land” non-governmental educational foundation functioning since 2012, the village miraculously evolved into a blooming spot becoming a magnet for national and international tourists, nature-loving new residents, private entrepreneurs, scientists from both Armenia and other countries, donor 28 | TourInfo
organizations, adventurers, etc. “Time Land” educational foundation offers its visitors a fantastic and unforgettable journey to the Stone Age. The visitors hike through the forest, appearing in an environment completely isolated from the civilization, where they should act as ancient people. The educational programs and simulation games help the participants learn and experience lighting a fire in the wild with materials available at hand, making hunting tools of the ancient inhabitants with the help of stones, making a hut in the forest and the like. They can also take part in archaeological expeditions, take part in archery competitions, go hiking in the mountains while learning about the history and wildlife of the local area, etc. In 2014 the organization launched “No to Plastic” initiative, which was crowned with success. The organization not only taught people to stop throwing plastic into the nature, but also cleaned the territory from the detrimental trash. Due to the supporting organization and EU funded “EU for Tourism: CommunityBased Rural Tourism and Cultural Events in Gegharkunik and Vayots Dzor Marzes” project in line with the selfless efforts of the local people, Kalavan started renovations recently. Artsakh War: Past and Present TIME TO HEAL Karabakh or Artsakh, an ancient Armenian land, has always been under the spotlight, for it is a land of abundance, hospitality, unrepeated and ancient culture, history, splendid nature, unique cuisine and magnificent atmosphere. You can often hear Armenians say: “Artsakh is the second Switzerland.” And tourists visiting Artsakh have sealed this argument. Tourism comprised a weighty part of Artsakh’s GDP before 2020. In 2019, for example, the country hosted 42.000 tourists from over 86 countries. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and the 44-day war, known as the Second Artsakh War in 2020, ruined this fast-growing success dropping the above number for up to 94%. September 27, 2021, marks the first year since the start of the Second Artsakh War. Artsakh lost over 75% of its territory to Azerbaijan. Although there is a truce signed and the Russian peacekeeping mission is standing on the line of contact, the tourist flow still remains at its minimum. Artsakh people is devastated and heartbroken as they were deprived of their right to self-determination, killed on their own motherland and forcibly displaced. Despite the consequences of the war, the majority of Artsakh people have returned to their homes in the territories which have defacto remained Armenian and go on living and creating there. In addition, there are Armenian citizens and diasporans who have moved to Artsakh to start businesses and

support the people there. The Government of Artsakh, on its turn, is taking steps to secure the foreign citizens’ entry into the country and boost tourism industry. For now, Artsakh’s tourism sector is mainly leaning on the Armenian citizens. The Government of Artsakh has initiated subsidized tours to the House-Museum of Nikol Duman, as well as Gandzasar and Amaras monasteries to bring in even more tourists until the end of August. The tours cost under a dollar – 500 Armenian drams. Artsakh still has to offer you mesmerizing and mind-blowing experiences and views, tastes and flavors, as well as business opportunities. Until the borders are open again for all tourists, you can get acquainted with the culture of Artsakh in Armenia through the various products MADE IN ARTSAKH, starting from handmade dolls in national costumes, ending with wine and dried fruit. As a travel magazine, we will henceforth do our best to provide you with the ways you can become a part of the recovery of Artsakh and the rehabilitation of the Artsakh people. One way to do that is to introduce you to the products and businesses established by Artsakh people. Time to heal!
100 Houses in Artsakh The Public Television of Armenia and the Artsakh Living Foundation are implementing the ‘100 Houses in Artsakh’ project. The aim of the project is to provide Artsakh Armenians who have lost their homes during the Second Artsakh War with apartments. The apartments are constructed in the nearby area of Dahrav village in Askeran region, 16 kilometers away from Stepanakert, the capital of Artsakh. The project was launched in June, 2021. “We came to rebuild Artsakh again, to see it even stronger. We want Artsakh to be rebuilt, to become stronger, because this desire in our hearts brought us here today,” says Ani Zakaryan, TV commentator and project participant. The roads of the district and the foundations of the settlements are being built by the order of the Artsakh Government. For further construction, the First Channel expects the participation of partner organizations and all Armenians. Each house requires AMD 10 million (about $20 000), it is about fastassembled houses. Donations are made through the Living Artsakh Foundation.

“The district will have 100 houses with 3 and 4 rooms, there will be plots of land for cultivation, and public buildings will include a school, a kindergarten, a park and other infrastructures,” says Vladimir Petrosyan, director of the engineering company. Public buildings are also planned in the new settlement. The displaced families currently rent their apartments in Artsakh and Armenia. Many of them cannot afford rent as they have two and more children. Hopefully, the project will enable them to have a roof and a safe place to live and raise their children. The Public TV has given everyone an opportunity to follow the process of the district’s construction on TV. This will also play a role in fundraising.
