GUIDING THE WAY BEACON is for the experienced hiker. Allowing them to enjoy the great outdoors the way they know best. Having something you can rely on in case the worst should happen. With experience comes complacency, which can lead to a number of problems. Being untraceable should not be one of them. Inactivity while in the wilderness, increases the risk of life threatening conditions. Hypothermia being one of the most dangerous. With that in mind, the quicker they are rescued, the better. Mobile phone networks have several ‘deadzones’ making contacting emergency services difficult. Having BEACON will increase your chances of being discovered sooner.

“100%

OF PEOPLE RESCUED SUFFERED HYPOTHERMIA AS A SECONDARY FACTOR”

The BEACON system works by detecting the first signs of hypothermia, which happens when the body’s core temperature drops below 35°, which is measured through the inner ear (1). The RELAY earpiece (2) then transmits that information (3) to a personal location beacon (PLB) and a strobe light.

Whe the core body temperature drops below 35°, RELAY will send a wireless signal to the jacket to send out a distress beaon

RELAY headset is an autonomous emergency distress device that monitors the body’s core temperature and heart rate in order to detect the first signs of hypothermia. On the detection of hypothermia, the device will activate the emergency system in the jacket to alert Search and Rescue teams of the situation and attract the attention of passing hikers.

The PLB (4) then sends a distress signal to the emergency services containing your information and current location.

STROBE LIGHTS Situated on each arm, the strobe lights are activated when hypothermia is detected to increase visibility and alert others of your situation

The strobe light (5) will stay on a constant flash to attract the attention of passing hikers and increases visibility. This can aid search and rescue to locate you.

TYMPATIC TEMPERATURE SENSOR

LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERY Power for the sleeve will be provided by a rechargeable lithium polymer battery, which can withstand temperatures as low as -20°

BEACON EMERGENCY SYSTEM

The tympatic temperature sensor works by being placed in the ear measuring your core body temperature

(2)

Battery 3/V65HT Voltage 3.6 V Capacity 65 mAh Peak current 130 mA Discharge temperature -20°C to +85°C Size 33 mm x 33 mm x 8 mm Weight 9 g

(3)

PERSONAL LOCATION BEACON

(4)

The personal location beacon (PLB) will be activated when the signal from RELAY is received. Transmitting an emergency distress signal that contains your location and information to search and rescue organisations.

(1) OPTICAL SENSOR

tBattery: Varta CoinPower CP1254 A3 Voltage level: 60mAh @ 3.7 V Dimensions: 12.1mm diameter – 5.4mm height Lifespan: 10 hours usage

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM When RELAY activates, it automatically connects to the SAR communication system

(5)

The optical sensor works together with the temperature sensor, measuring your heart beat DETACHABLE SLEEVES Each sleeve with the emergency system in, is detachable in order to charge the batteries and also to wash the jacket.

BEACON 3 LAYER TECHNOLOGY The BEACON jacket is made from a 3 layer fabric, which is wind and waterproof. The fabric is also breathable to provide ultimate comfort and warmth when needed

BENEFITS OF BEACON

PIECE OF MIND

IMPROVED RESPONSE TIMES

Have piece of mind knowing that you have an fall back option

Due to search and rescue teams being alerted as soon as problems arise, they can respond to calls quicker

SENSE OF SECURITY Feel confident knowing there is an added layer of security

AUTONOMOUS BACK UP

LIFE SAVING Having BEACON could improve the likelihood of being rescued

BEACON works without any conscious effort. Just put it in and go

ROUTE TRACKER With the ViewRanger app, you can record routes and find routes made by other users. The app records your position every five minutes to help search and rescue locate

REGISTER WITH SEARCH AND RESCUE

PERFORMANCE Monitor and record your core body temperature and heart rate to improve performance or efforts

Connect and register with search and rescue and take comfort knowing you will always be found

While on an exchange semester at Shih Chien University in Taipei, Taiwan I recognised that they have one of the best bike share schemes in the world. Unfortunately, the roads and pathways are not always suitable for the public to ride the Ubike and people put themselves in dangerous situations. For my design project in Taipei I wanted to help the public be safer using the Ubike and make their personal safety a priority on the streets of the city. Through research and inspiration, I decided to design a helmet that would be available to every member of the Ubike and would be sustainable, lightweight, waterproof, affordable and of course; stylish and innovative.

The aim of this project was to design a new architype of televisions, going beyong the generic ‘black box’. OPTIC was inspired by the same principles of the 1950’s TV cabinet. When it is not in use, it can be hidden away to blend in with it’s surroundings, to then be revealed like a movie theatre. OPTIC is a short throw projector, with built in media streaming to enhance your viewing pleasure.

The aim of Eternal Home is to provide a final resting place for a childs’ beloved pet while also helping the child understand and learn about the process of death. The Eternal Home pet coffin comes as a net on biodegrable card, which can be constructed with the help of an adult. The child can personalise the coffin with messages and drawings to aid the child with their final goodbyes.

DESIGN PROCESS

Pet passes away

Child can personalise the coffin before construction

Once constructed, the pet can be placed inside ready to Rest In Peace

The pet can then be placed in it’s final resting place

Coffin arrives as a net on biodegradable card

This process enables the child to learn about, and come to terms with death

GEE - KENT HO Gee-Kent Ho hair salon is in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. The salon has been chosen as the regional finalist for the L’Oreal colour trophy 2016. The owner of the salon, Gee-Kent Ho asked me to design flyers and posters to promote and attract students to the salon. He also asked me to create images to be placed in the local newspaper.
