The USCA Nationals in Hanover were both a racer’s and a spectator’s feast — from the Ledyard Boathouse, where the starts took place, downstream beneath the road bridge, where crowds gathered to watch the jockeying for early position, to the upstream turnround where, perched on rocks, race followers got a closeup view of paddlers testing their own and each other’s technical skills and strategies setting up for, and fighting their way around, the buoys.

I arrived in Hanover Monday night, the day before sprints, and set up my tent in my shaded but steamy campsite at Storr’s Pond. I had just spent three days with my nieces (four girls aged 3 through 7) and I was becoming aware of the fact that no amount of paddlesports training really prepares one for that many cartwheels (let alone being a human jungle gym.) Blissful in the knowledge that my siblings need only breed once more to complete my dream of “Auntie Kelly’s Outrigger Team”, I unpacked my bedroll and contemplated the week ahead.

A paddler’s (and Executive Director’s) perspective of the 2002 Nationals: I don't think anyone can remember when there was such a throng of enthusiastic paddlers at our Nationals. The New England paddlers devoted their time to make this event come off without a hitch (minor things don't count!). My hat is off to Chris and Marc Wilson, Trish and Peter Heed and family, and to Tom Warner and Tom Walton (who spent countless hours inputting the computer with results), Paula Thiel, Dede Herlihy and Dick Ulbrich to mention just a few that devoted weeks of their lives just make sure things progressed as smoothly as possible while the rest of us just had to try and prepare for the events. Some of them even raced!!!

Two weeks earlier I had started my New Job. My colleagues at work found it a bit odd that I would be taking a vacation after just getting through the door. I informed them that I had an obligation to attend a very important International Event - one that simply couldn’t be missed.

You know, when Nationals are run as well as this one was, it sets the bar at an even higher level for the next hosts to attain. I think that the USCA needs to find a better way to ensure that the Nationals are run this well every time.

Was I ever right! This year’s Marathon Nationals featured: Record Breaking attendance. Personally speaking, it was a thrill to sit on the start line of the C2 Women’s race knowing that between the open and master’s class there were over 60 teams participating. (The mixed and men’s C2 starts made the Connecticut River look like the ocean!)

On another note, I had a lot of people thanking me for the $5000.00 donation but I would like to clear up the reasoning or rationale for the donation. As part of being elected to the Executive Director position there was a salary to go along with it. Jim Mack had been the Executive Director since God was slain on the cross (maybe a slight exaggeration) but to my knowledge he had never taken any salary for that position. He took expenses but not salary.

More Youth Paddlers in one place than I’ve ever seen. And they didn’t just race amazingly well, they participated in USCA at the highest level — developing ideas for the future of youth paddling and submitting a petition to the delegates that suggested changes to our competition rules. Miranda Robinson of New York found an ambiguity in our competition rules and filed a protest that will force USCA to clarify its policy on PFD use. These examples of active participation on competitive and administrative levels show a promising future for our organization.

The USCA was able to keep Jim’s salary for many years and since there was a positive cash flow, the treasury has a significant amount in reserves. This may not always be possible. I remember when I was president of the USCA we were always living hand to mouth and didn't have the luxury of paying anybody. We even had to stop having a glossy cover on the Canoe News because of lack of funds.

World-class amenities to make the event a paddler’s dreamcome-true. We had day care. We had fast computerized timing and results. We had Ben & Jerry’s. We had “free” world class sports massage (donation only!). We had a shady grove, a professional boat house, hot showers, and delicious food available at the site. We had a professional video tour of the course playing inside the boathouse, and detailed course maps on display. We had the best DJ’s and sound system! We had entertaining announcers for all events. Despite record turn out, we had “ontime” events. We had more photo-finishes than I’ve ever seen at one event. We even had terrific weather!

At present we still have a good insurance program that is competitive (as long as we don't have any claims against us) and this is where the excess money has come from to be able to pay an Executive Director if we wish. I wasn't going to take the "salary" but then I thought that we needed to try and raise the level of competition at our Nationals to that of any other Canoeing event being held. So, I "donated" the USCA's money to try and help in this regard.

A tasty pasta dinner, and a speedy semiannual meeting. Delicious food and terrific company made this year’s dinner a real treat. The bonus for all the delegates was the speedy but effective meeting. Helped along by the fact that the caterers needed the meeting room back to set up for a wedding, USCA delegates moved swiftly through the agenda with a focus on sticking to business, making decisions, and assigning work to be done prior to the January meeting. Pat your delegate on the back for working well under pressure!

The results were fantastic and although no one can know for sure, I happen to think it worked. I plan on doing the same thing next year as long as the organization can afford the expenditure.

Being a part of this year’s marathon nationals were a challenge, a pleasure, and a real treat. Those of you who were there know this. For the rest of you, you don’t know what you’re missing!

(P.S. there was some dispute on how the money was elected to be distributed but we can fix that at the next annual meeting so tell your delegate what your thoughts are!).

So please don't be thanking me for the donation. Its the USCA's money so thank yourselves for supporting our organization during the year by being a member, volunteer, recruiter, etc., and in using the insurance program that we have in place as that's where the money came from in the first place.

After nearly a decade of taking care of USCA's Canoe News, Ann Behling is stepping down!

1. Delegates voted to accept the bid of Ken Gerg, Emporium, PA, for the Stock Aluminum Nationals for April 5, 2003. 2. Tave Lamperez, National Coordinator, announced that USCA is seeking bids for the 2004 Nationals. Aluminum and Marathon. 3. Nominating Committee consists of Paula Thiel and Kathy Edwards. These two delegates will select a governing member to serve on the committee. They need to find candidates for President and Treasurer. 4. Auditing Committee consists of Larry Liquori, Joan Theiss, and Gareth Stevens. 5. It was voted to form a committee to explore a donation policy which would include the issue of cash awards at the Nationals. The committee will explore several types of scenarios and include benefits and risks. The committee is to recommend a USCA policy. John Edwards, Tave Lamperez, Dwight Walker, and Jim Dipelesi expressed an interest to serve on the committee. 6. The Delegates accepted Tom Walton's proposal to hold a Biathlon. It would be a fun event for the next 5 years at the Nationals. It will consist of a 3k run and a 3k paddle. Tom will run the event and cover administrative costs. USCA will support Tom with publicity and allow him to use USCA insurance for this addition to the national races. Items for the Annual Meeting Agenda 1. Youth want to upgrade out of their age group in the Youth Sprints. PFD requirements for youth to be reviewed. These to go to the competition committee. 2. Further clarification of the Sea Kayak specs. 3. Update of the USCA Competition Rules and Specifications. 4. Review of USCA Rules and Regulations with proposed amendments to be presented for action.

We are grateful to Ann for maintaining excellence in coordinating and laying out each issue of Canoe News, often working single-handedly to painstakingly layout the magazine. Ann's dedication has kept Canoe News alive and well, and has served USCA's communications needs. She has consistently gone out of her way to provide the best possible service for USCA members. So as USCA's Canoe News began to feel the tug of electronic publishing and automated layout techniques (things that are outside of Ann's immediate interests) I wondered, "How will we make sure our dedicated volunteers are happy as we realign this effort." Always a professional, Ann said, "Kelly, let me make this easy for you." Ann's proactive willingness to "pass the baton" and support USCA's attempt to try new things is beyond admirable. It shows us her professional, selfless, supportive spirit that has made her USCA efforts so valuable. Ann continues to support Canoe News with ideas for the future. As she sets aside printer, scissors, and tape she continues to provide recommendations. Ann's ideas to involve personal stories from members, to promote awareness of issues relating to waterways and watercraft regultions, to include reviews of equipment, and to recommend several "special series" that get our readers to look forward to the next issue will be incorporated into future plans for Canoe News and we hope she keeps coming up with more! Jim Mack Upon hearing that Ann has retired from her position with Canoe News it gives me a great deal of pleasure to congratulate her for her outstanding contributions and dedication she has made to USCA. USCA has benefited from Ann’s expertise and creativity. Her work ethics provided a role model for all committee members to follow. She worked endless hours in perfecting each issue of Canoe News magazine as her heart and soul was dedicated to provide the best possible news for all of our members.

Among her other duties in USCA, her work both as Nationals Timing Chair and, with her husband, Jay (National’s Sprint Chair) was always professional, positive and efficient.

This issue would not have been possible without the help of all the people who responded so quickly to my pleas for writing, photos, help with identifying racers, and so forth. Thank you all who received my frantic e-mails and phone calls, and gave your time.

In her spare time at the Nationals you would find her helping out with membership, awards, registration and being available to help in any way she could. Ann also raced canoes, camped, was extremely helpful in USCA’s Guinness World Record setting, and best of all a terrific mother and wife to her family.

Her outstanding leadership abilities, technical skills, enthusiasm, positive attitude, high moral values, dedication to excellence, and concern for others have definitely contributed to strengthen our Association.

Jan Whitaker, Robert Altman, Larry Liquori and Jim Dipelesi, among others (forgive me for not naming you all) spent their valuable time to download photos and identify people I did not recognize. And, thanks to all who wrote! Now read and enjoy.

The 2002 Nationals at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH marked a major resurgence in participation at the USCA premier event. It was a race organized by paddlers for paddlers. The response was overwhelming. Having 600 plus paddlers in the Peter Heed keeping same place to compete and so many Tom Warner, camera at the ready. an eye on things. families making the trip to NH their summer vacation, was above and beyond what we dreamed of in the planning stages.

It was heart warming to hear the kind words and compliments at the close of this year’s Marathon Nationals. Paddlers from Nova Scotia to Texas appreciated the intense competition resulting from record-breaking attendance. As we looked around at the well-run competition, the beautiful Connecticut River and picture perfect Hanover, it was clear that this was a first rate event in every way. What was not always apparent was the seamless way in which the event hosts and volunteers prepared each day, and handled every problem so that we could just show up and paddle!

A tremendous amount of behind the scenes work was done to make this event happen. Many NECRA members sacrificed their own competitive interests to “be there” for the rest of us. These are the individuals who did not leave race headquarters until the next day was squared away. From the amount of work done, I would have bet that Trish Heed, Karen Levitt, Tom Walton and Tom Warner slept there. Chris Wilson and Marc Lessard likely tucked them in. Enough cannot be said about the competent, dedicated, reliable, job done by Chris and Marc. They are truly “Paddlers of the Year.” I think all would agree that Peter Heed’s professional announcing throughout the event is on par with the best from Monday night football. Dede Herlihy's pasta dinner came off even better than promised and yet again, Priscilla Reinertsen organized a wonderful awards ceremony. So many people contributed to this event.

It was also a year when new young talent stepped up to take a place in the highly competitive limelight. Friday's dramatic C2 open men's finish came right down to the wire, and the young team of Steve Corlew and Jacob DuBois showed their elders a little something about sprinting. Like a breath of fresh air, the two young men from Michigan impressed everyone with their enthusiasm and obvious love for the sport. A real highlight was the return of so many paddlers who have not participated in Nationals in years as personified by Cindy Lynch and Court McDermott. A record number of young paddlers turned out to race in the youth sprints, demonstrating that the USCA is developing up and coming talent to take the place of us older racers.

Nationals was the way it should be and hopefully will continue to be in the future. None of the success would have been possible without the dedicated work of the core group and countless volunteers. Thank you everyone who attended and made all of the Priscilla Reinertsen congratulates Chris Wilson I am only naming a few! The USCA Nationals 2002 in Hanover, Tuesday: Sprints Results Hanover whipped us up strong, erratic, gusty winds for the sprints on Tuesday. One minute a strong tail wind, the next, calm. Then a head wind out of hell followed suddenly by a three-quarter tail wind. It was hard enough on some of the heavier paddlers!

Orienteering Racers Have A Great Time at the 2002 USCA Nationals . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Ray Thiel On the morning of August 7, 2002, 33 racers registered to compete in the 2002 USCA National Canoe / Kayak Orienteering Championships held this year in Hanover New Hampshire. The mix of talent entering this year was incredibly diverse. Entrants included people with past experience at the

USCA Nationals Orienteering events and newcomers to the sport. Paddling skill levels ranged from true novices to expert. Orienteering skills, which were key to success in this event, also varied widely. Regardless of their qualifications everyone was enthusiastic, and expectations were high as the pre race instructions were given, the drawing for starting order was held and the boats were staged at the waterfront. They weren’t disappointed.

ish, which added excitement to the event. As a result many racers thought that this orienteering event was the best USCA Nationals Orienteering race that they had ever entered. The course layout and the surrounding landscape was not only great for spectators, but it also allowed racers to find the control points using whatever means they thought would be fastest. Aims Coney and J-J Coté, who had the fastest time of the day, along with many of the experienced orienteerers, chose to separate and have one teammate run to some control points. This was particularly important at a control located under a bridge over a small brook. What the runners didn’t know was that the brook was deep and that they would have to tread water while trying to punch their control cards, turning this event into an unexpected triathlon. The second fastest team, Steve Corlew and Jacob DuBois (who were clearly the fastest paddlers in the race and later went on to

For people who’ve never tried orienteering, it involves using maps to find markers (called control points) hidden along the shoreline. There are punches at the control points that make imprints on “punch sheets” carried by each team to document the fact that the control point has been located. The team that finds all the control points in the fastest time wins. The 2002 Orienteering course was set up to make it as fair as possible, to select control points that avoided unusual hazards for the racers or

Fun 3k Run/3k Paddle

Strategy and determination also played a particularly important role at the end of the race for Karl Stephens. Karl wasn’t the fastest paddler but he is a very experienced orienteerer and his ingenuity and uncommon determination was the highlight of the race. Paddling in a borrowed C1 racing canoe, Karl was having difficulty making headway into the wind and current to get to the last hidden control point. Recognizing that he was losing time, Karl choose to portage his boat a half mile along a road parallel to the Connecticut River to a point where he could more easily paddle to the remaining control he needed to find. While paddling downstream from there to get to his final stop directly across the river from the finish (this control point was not hidden and really just served to make the finish more interesting), wind, fatigue and a lack of time in his borrowed boat caused Karl to tip.

The second (first was in Niles, MI) Run/Paddle Biathlon Championship was a hit.

Ten athletes competed in the 3K Run, 3K Paddle extravaganza on Wednesday, August 7, followed by grub and brew at a nearby eatery. In addition, the USCA has allowed Tom Walton to offer the National Run/Paddle Biathlon Championship on Wednesday evening at 5:00PM of "Nationals Week" for the next four years. This is not an official USCA championship event, but a race for the sweet pleasure of it . . . Plans are already firmly in place for Warren, PA. on August 6, 2003. A local running club has jumped on the bandwagon to help plan, organize and, most importantly, to participate. If you are interested in participating, but do not want to do the running part, you will have plenty of willing folks to form a team.

At this point he choose to walk along the steep bank in waist deep water until he reached the final control and then reentered his boat. Now the finish was in sight, but he needed to cross the river safely. Again the wind came into play and Karl could not keep the bow of his boat from pointing directly upstream. With uncommon balance and determination, and with the urging of the entire crowd and Peter Heed on the microphone, Karl paddled his boat backward in a wide arc all the way to the dock. His overall effort and unusual finish drew the biggest applause of the day.

USCA Nationals, Thursday: Fledgling I and II, Bantam, Juvenile, and Junior Thursday still had some gusts of wind to challenge the paddlers, especially the very light paddlers. “Austin (Hoefs) span like a top,” I heard someone remark. Still, it was a day of great challenge, bravery and fun. The adults enjoyed the event as much as (more, in some cases) than the kids and youth. All can be proud of their achievements and treasure the memories that their trophies and medals carry with them.

USCA Nationals, Friday: K2 Men ICF, K1 Woman, C1 ICF, C2 Men Master Standard, C1 Men Senior, C1 Men Veteran The wind had subsided by Friday, and this, and following three days of weather were near perfect for the marathon events. Scouting (or prior knowledge of the course) paid off. It was handy to know where the fast and slow waters were, the weeds, the suck, the shallows. Saturday brought some races with especially exciting finishes, notably the victory of Bob Rapant over Calvin Hassel, in a blistering finish, by less than half a boat length. Mark Gillespie, John Sullivan, and Sean Jennings were just seconds behind them. It is an approximately 2-hour drive to Palestine. The round trip mileage is approximately 290 miles

Start approx. two miles N or Hwy 79 Bridge. Start downstream approx. one mile to buoy turn, then upstream approx 1 mile back to start, buoy turn, approx 2 miles downstream to Hwy 79 bridge, continuing downstream eleven additional miles to take out, 15 miles total. The upstream portion may be adjusted to fit with a 2 1/2 hour requirement. Flow approximately 5 miles per hour, current 1400 to 2400 CFS, deep water, some rockshale and logs, NO portages, NO river blockages.

The Neches River Wilderness is one of the toughest flat water races in the state. “Old Aluminums”, unlimited solo’s and kayak, and sit on tops do OK too. Lots of obstacles – no current. This is a fundraiser for a college scholarship.

August 24-Texas Aluminum Championship - Trinity River (Same course as National) 15 miles

All of our races are well organized, with people shuttle, EMS, National Guard, Sheriff’s Dept, security at parking, drag boat, hamburgers, drinks, water melon, medals and t-shirts. We usually have some sprint racing on a nice lake the day after the wilderness race. This is a very rural county, 1065 square miles. County seat, Palestine - population 26,000 - There are only 55,000 people in the whole county. This part of Texas is rolling hills, ranch land with oak and pine forest. The Neches River is on our east side and the Trinity is on the west. Both are unrestrained during flood season, fairly tame during August and September. There are no homes or development of any king along either river. All you will hear is the sound of your paddle and the sound of a competitor breathing down your back. In our Neches Race we normally draw 20 to 30 aluminum boats annually out of 50 to 65 total participants. We expect 40 to 50 aluminums for the Nationals. Like Glen Green, I started paddling a Grumman in the 50's to get my canoeing merit badge in Angola, New York. I’m 58 now and I still believe aluminum is the heart and soul of paddle sports. Most of us older guys started with aluminum and its only fitting to finish with aluminum. Lets keep this division alive and strong - ya’ll come Aluminum is the one level of paddle sports where the boats are all equal and the race is won by the people in the boat rather than technology or design.

I know one when I see one . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kelly Wypych Early this paddling season I got a call from fellow New York paddler Pam Fitzgerald. She said, “Hey Kelly, I’ll race “Run of the Charles with you.” Sounded good to me. I had been looking for a pro women’s partner and could think of none better than Pam. Pam needed to hold off until her doctor gave her the OK as she had had some surgery in February and needed to heal up. Pam has had surgery before due to a severe break in her wrist. She had once been a world-class Judo champion, but this wrist injury and subsequent “fusing” of her wrist ended her Judo career. Luckily, her wrist position works out reasonably well for paddling. I figured that her wrist must have needed a tune up . . . I met up with Pam to paddle in mid-March. We met “halfway”, near Utica NY and paddled for about 3 hours on “Roberta’s River.” It felt pretty good - fast and smooth. When we were putting the boat up, I said, “Hey Pam, did you change your hair or something?” Pam responded, “Well, I did have brain surgery five weeks ago...” Pam’s level of dedication is pretty stunning to me. What would make some of us stagger off to be pampered triggered a level of motivation in Pam that allowed her to be, despite serious injury, the finest and fittest that she could be. Pam struggled this season

with fatigue, severe headaches, vision problems, muscle cramps, and a host of challenges caused by her surgery and treatment. Her heroic ability to rise above challenges and perform as the elite paddler that she is is both inspiring and commendable. Pam - You go girl! You’re a paddling hero!

sprint races, clearly illustrating the ability of paddlers with disabilities to compete in the sport and the need for organizations to provide “a sporting chance*”. Paddlers with paraplegia, cerebral palsy, amputation, fibromyalgia and lack of vision were included on the teams. The paddlers’ abilities were evident, their disabilities were not, when they were seated and racing. The men, women and youth who raced on the integrated teams of paddlers with and without physical disabilities are pioneers in a sport that many people around the world now believe merits inclusion in Paralympic Games. Their names can be listed among the winners but so too, should the names of all the paddlers and spectators who witnessed the event and future paddlers who will have new paddling opportunities because someone who attended the races was inspired to take the initiative to help start new programs You can assist in this project by offering your time and expertise in paddling, as an individual or as a member of a canoe racing organization, to interested rehabilitation agencies and membership organizations of people with dis-

Parting Shot . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens It was a week full of good humor, keen and comradely competition. People could not say enough good to me about their experience, the excellent organization, and the open friendliness with which everone treated everyone. Holm Schmidt, a coach and paddler from Gainesville, Georgia, made a point of telling me how much he appreciated the whole occasion and its atmosphere. “It compares very well with other national competitive events I have been to,” he said. “Some teams and some groups are cliquey and stand-offish. There is none of that here. I like it very much.” That has been my own experience of the whole sport of marathon paddling and its people since I came into it four years ago. We have had a good time all together in Hanover. We competed hard. I loved it. I didn’t want to leave . . . and neither did my car.

Bracing on the right than the left, I brought it under some control. My body was doing the dreaded Jell-O shake as I sat in an eddy. My nerves were shot. The strong chaotic crosscurrents had made me thinking twice about doing the race on Sunday.

I had traveled 3 hours from Chicago to South Bend Indiana. The race was advertised as PaddleFest 2002. A middle ear infection was still bothering me but I had raced with pain before. If this race were as good as the advertisements, it would be worth it. The purse for the C1 canoe race was $1000. Perennial National C1 Champion, Calvin Hassel, would be on hand to take most of that money. The other places would be up for grabs. There would however be no money in my class (kayak). It would just be for the glory of being #1.

The morning of the race I watched in silence as paddlers took off their sleek canoes and kayaks from the roof racks of their cars. My own kayak sat on my Yakima car rack. It would stay there for the rest of the day. This would be a picture taking day for me and not a racing day. My ear infection had made me lose any sense of balance. There was no way I would be able to make it through the tricky currents of the St. Joe River. A hard, but right decision.

This was the first running of PaddleFest. I had seen the press

releases and was impressed. I saw the ads for the race everywhere. When I went to the web site I was dumbstruck (www.paddlefest.org). All the race directors I knew had been lucky to pick up a local sponsorship. These people were getting the big ones and it was their first race. Subaru, Moosejaw, and Fluid Fun, (a canoe and kayak shop) led the list of sponsors. I had met the race director, Pat Sawyer, two years before. He was just switching from racing kayaks to C1 canoes. I was switching from C1’s to kayaking. He had a used K-1 for sale and I had 6 C1 paddles to get rid of. Pat and his wife Nancy were now going to put on one of the biggest, if not the biggest, canoe

and kayak race in the state of Indiana. There would be four races. The first and the one with all the prize money would be the Moosejaw 16-mile marathon. The money however was for only the C1 Class. I wonder why? After those boats went off a 2-mile fun race would be held along with a corporate challenge race. In the small frog pond, impromptu sprints were setup for the kids. A 26-foot voyageur canoe sat along a pier to give spectators rides during the race. I‘m used to covering canoeing events but this race would be a challenge to photograph. I wanted to get a picture of everything. My main emphasis how-

ever would be centered on the marathon. I had scouted the river the day before and knew how to get to all the best spots. The river was just short of flood stage. The Railroad Bridge and the upstream turn around would give most of the paddlers a very difficult time. It could also make for some very interesting photos. If a boat was turned in the strong current, it might cost them their boat. After the pre-race meeting, I laid out my plan. I would first take some pictures of the start and then follow the race up and down though South Bend. All other pictures would have to wait until the marathon was over. The gun sounded, the boats were off. The mad dash to the finish line had begun. Paddles were flying. One boat was turned and faced the shore as the crowd screamed. Matt Streib led a pack of four boats up and around the first bridge. Calvin Hassel, biding his time was in second place less than a canoe length behind. Two kayaks fought each other to the downstream turn. Earl, a friend, was in the second group and paddling a downriver kayak. He was just ahead of a faster yellow Olympic training boat paddled by Steven Peterson. I yelled down from the bridge urging Earl on. Three other packs were closing in on the two lead groups. I got into my car and took off for the next bridge. I put my camera on a tripod and waited. In the distance about a mile away, I could make out a solitary figure weaving in and out of the trees. I knew at once that it was Calvin. His body was slightly hunched as he followed the shore upstream. A tree would protrude into the

from shore than Calvin. As the other boats passed it was obvious that the further out into the current you were the slower you would be. Earl Metzler had been passed by the yellow boat but was still paddling hard. I finished off a roll of film and rushed to my next stop. It would be awhile before they made it up this far. I sat on the bank and had a Gatorade and a banana. I watched as the current flowed around a tree and over a set of rocks. There was only one correct way to run the section. First, you had to go upstream around the downed tree that forced you out into the main current. You then had to fight your way back into shore and go inside the rocks before cutting out at a 45-degree angle across the powerful current to the other side of the river and the upstream eddy. They would have to do this in a 50-yard stretch of river. Calvin was the first to pop around the tree. He cut back into shore went around the rocks and then back across the river. It was done to perfection. Now it was Matt’s turn. He popped around the tree but missed the rocks then cut across the river. Pat Sawyer who had been running 4th in the C1 class cut through the trees and took off across the river. He fought hard across the current and slide-slipped over to the other side. The time difference between the boats was starting to increase dramatically. One by one the other boats came through. Only Calvin had done it correctly. Others had come close but nobody else made it to the inside of the rocks. I picked up my gear and headed for the Railroad Bridge. Calvin came through and was almost on the shore. I kneeled down to get

river its' bright green branches waiting to snare him and turn him over. From on top of the bridge I could see logs and pipes just under the water that would be invisible to him. At most, Calvin was a paddle length away from shore. Most of the time it was only a paddle blade. He didn’t miss a stroke as he paddled upstream. I watched as he went under the bridge and into the currents that had made me decide not to race. He didn’t fight the currents. He saw a path, turned his canoe into the shore, and was gone.

a picture. He was just inches away from my lens. He had that same look of complete focus that he had on first downstream leg. In two hours, his expression had never changed. He saw me but his eyes were on the river 100 yards ahead.

Next came Matt. A one-minute gap already separated him from Calvin. He was into the trees and out but just a little further out

“Go! Go!”

Matt was next and he yelled out, “how far ahead”. “Two minutes “ I said. I knew it was too much of a lead for him to make up. But yelled for him to

South Bend PaddleFest 2002 - continued. Now I had to make it down to the finish line. It was easy for me to get the pictures as they fought up stream against the current. Now I would be the one who would have to race to get them crossing the finish line. This was my first trip to South Bend. It is a typical college town with Notre Dame taking up half of it. It also has a manmade white water course. I passed the Golden Dome and knew I was lost. Turning around I headed back to the river. However, every street seemed to angle away. Then I saw a familiar pancake house and took off going just ahead of the posted speed limit. I pulled into the park and started to get ready to film the finish. Looking at my watch, I figured I had ten minutes before anyone came through. A spectator asked when the next boat would be in. “Next boat?” I inquired. “Yes, Matt and Calvin are in,” he replied. Oh well I knew what the finish would be, Calvin, and then Matt. I still had three rolls of unexposed film. I spent the next hour taking pictures. Most of them were of the kids in the frog pond. They are the future of our sport. Just maybe one of them will paddle at the National and World level. Maybe a few of the will paddle in PaddleFest 2025. I hope that all of them will keep paddling. I had missed the “Fun Race” which was a two-mile upstreamdownstream race. It was structured for the paddlers who still wanted to compete but might have trouble keeping up with the pace and effort of the 16 grueling miles of the marathon. I just wonder how Pat and Nancy will top it next year. Was that just a rumor of a million-dollar purse for kayaks? Rookie Racer Night leads to Training Tips: A New “Regular Feature” in Canoe News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Gareth Stevens A few weeks ago, Rick Lorenzen from Minnesota sent me a draft set of training tips, asking for my comments. He had prepared them for what he called Rookie Racer Mondays. Apart from sugsting a good regular feature for Canoe News, he piques my interest. “Rookie Racer Nights? What are they?,” I asked. Here’s his answer.

Mississippi River was the most convenient place for them to meet after work to paddle before the sun went down. Other canoe racers and would-be canoe racers joined them over the years. Now, twenty-six years later, men and women are still coming to Rookie Racer Monday Nights to practice canoe racing. Rain or shine, cold or hot, drought or flood, nothing stops them from paddling except thunder and lightning. After all, real canoe races are never canceled due to any kind of weather except lightning and that’s only because it would be bad publicity for the races if lightning killed a canoe racer. These days, Ketter Canoeing sponsors Rookie Racer Monday Nights by providing racing canoes and life jackets for free. Five to fifteen experienced canoe racers show up with their canoes and bent shaft paddles every Monday from spring ahead to fall back when the days are long enough. They come because they love the sport of canoe racing and want to get a good workout on the water, to work on their paddling technique, to practice riding other canoe wakes, and to share what they’ve learned with anyone who has an interest. After the paddling, you’re invited to dinner at the Lotus restaurant on Oak Street where you can hear stories of racers past and present and discuss the finer points of racing paddling techniques. Some people show up to try bent shaft paddles or the sleeker racing canoes. Some people show up to learn more efficient paddling techniques for their recreational paddling even though it’s difficult to keep an open mind when your arms are programmed with years of J and C strokes. Some athletes show up because they have an upcoming triathlon that has canoeing as part of the race and they need to learn as much as they can in a few weeks. Rookie Racer Mondays is one of the only places in the world where you might see a 57 year old dairy farmer paddling a canoe with a 28-year-old woman doctor. Athletes, mothers, college students, doctors, and businessmen have all come together at the sandy edge of the Mississippi River. We share the mighty Mississippi River from the lock just below St. Anthony Falls to the Ford Parkway dam with river barges, paddlewheel showboats, racing sculls and their pace boats, a peregrine falcon nesting under a high bridge, geese, ducks, and beavers. Dam Removal – A Citizen’s Guide to Restoring Rivers

Techniques to practice 1. Don’t use speed or power while working on technique, instead focus on training your muscles. This lets have time to de-program any bad habits and re-program with more efficient habits. 2. Rotate your shoulders to increase your paddle reach without leaning forward from the waist. This allows you to involve more torso muscles and reduce strain on arm muscles. 3. Slow cadence with a quick recovery to get the paddle back into the water fast. The paddle should be in the water longer than it’s in the air. This increases your ability to maintain stable in rough waves. 4. Slice the paddle sideways on exiting and entering the water. This reduces drag.

This is the number one handbook on small dam removal (25 feet high or less). Dams limit or block many functions of rivers that benefit the public – such as fishing, wildlife habitat, natural beauty, water quality, waste assimilation, recreation, property value, public image, tourism. Dams wear out, threaten safety and cost a lot to maintain and replace along with silt-filled reservoirs. Sometimes dams are necessary.

5. Paddle parallel to the canoe’s centerline with the shaft nearly vertical. This increases efficiency.

This book covers all the factors involved in dam removal deliberations – costs, benefits, safety, environment, engineering, fish and mussels, sediment, government, fears, recreation, strategies, with worksheets, useful appendices, helpful questions and answers.

New racers 1. Don’t race on the downstream leg, work on technique and save your strength for the upstream leg.

Where the uses of private property are at stake, there will likely be strong feelings. We’re duly cautioned to use care and circumspection in approaching and dealing with the several interests involved.

2. Focus on 1 or 2 things only and re-program your muscles to this unfamiliar motion.

Note that this is a valuable checklist, not a set of examples or case histories. Several of the latter appear in Dam Removal Success Stories, December 1999, by American Rivers, Friends of the Earth and Trout Unlimited.

3. Watch and imitate the experienced racers and listen to how they describe the proper motion. 4. Ask questions if anything doesn’t make sense. We really want to share what we’ve learned. Experienced racers 1. Work on improving your technique too (almost everyone needs more rotation and quicker recovery) 2. Practice riding canoe wakes and passing canoes with a less experienced partner. 3. Circle back if your canoe passes everyone for a better workout and to share your knowledge. 4. Remind your partner to work on technique without speed or power on the downstream leg. 5. Give them time to think. Try letting them switch sides at their own pace on the downstream leg. Tricks that might be helpful 1. If your canoe feels tippy: Put rocks in the bottom of the canoe for a lower center of gravity and keep your paddle in the water longer each stroke for more control. Slow the pace or frequency of your strokes and speeding the recovery to get the paddle back into the water quicker.

When you come down to it, the decision to remove or rebuild a dam should serve the public interest, at least in the dam region if not a greater area. That means looking at the comprehensive economic impacts on the region and it calls for a Resource Economic study, at least for the more expensive projects. How else to measure the potential economic effects upon sport fishing, tourism, home building, riparian property values – a natural river compared to a dammed one? Economics is usually the decision-clincher and as a dam demolition tool it should play a bigger part than it has in any book yet. By no means does that reduce the importance of other public interests such as the environment. Several interviews with local officials and citizens before and after dam removal, with videos of the rivers and surroundings. In one case a high-tech employer in a small backwoods town seeking qualified help used the improved water quality and beauty of the river corridor as a quality-of-life lure for new employees. The tape covers typical fears, concerns and questions and responds fully. Real people, very down to earth, an excellent document.

Mud, Trash, and Snakes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Ginger Turner “Mind if I shoot that snake?” “Uh, no, I guess not.” “Son, go get the gun.” Six boats of people were scattered around a large log jam, trying to get to all the trash. A farmer had heard the commotion and come to the edge of the tall bank to see what was going on. We told him we were doing our biannual clean up of the river when he noticed the snake. My rule of thumb is to leave snakes alone unless they are going to harm children, but hey, this was his land. To my surprise, he let his son do the shooting. With this many

large state boundaries, we have 150 members, some of whom race nearly every weekend across the state. We sponsor three championship races a year: unlimited, aluminum, and USCA; a canoe, bike, and run triathlon; publish a bi-monthly newsletter, and have established an elaborate points system to encourage racing not only in our races but any published race around the state. Awards are presented at the end of the year to the top USCA, solo, and overall male and female, youth and adult paddlers. But we are not only about racing, we have a focus on conservation and of “giving back” to the rivers we love. The San Marcos River, in the heart of Texas, is a unique river near and dear to many racers’ hearts. It is home to the notorious Texas Water Safari, a grueling 260 mile race to the Gulf of Mexico from the headwaters of the river, Aquarena Springs. Over 150 million gallons of water gush daily from over 200 springs to form the San

boats and people around I hope he’s got a good aim, I thought to myself. I saw the snake explode into pieces and then heard the shot. (Hmm, bullets are faster than sound.) Breathing again, I was glad that part was over. After hearing voices over my shoulder, I turned to see Kelly paddling an old refrigerator that had finally been freed from the jam. We joked about the new racing class. The Texas Canoe Racing Association (TCRA) is a group founded to promote canoe and kayak racing in Texas. Pulling from our

Marcos River. Joined shortly by the Blanco River, then later the Guadalupe (whose name it assumes), and finally the San Antonio, it dumps its once pristine water into the San Antonio Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Hundreds of native species of plants and aquatic animals live in the river, including five endangered or threatened species in the springs area: the Texas blind salamander, the fountain darter, the San Marcos salamander, San Marcos gambusia and Texas wild-rice. On this river the TCRA centers its conservation efforts.

spring cleanup coincides with a coordinated effort to clean the entire 90 miles of the San Marcos River. Canoe clubs from around the state pitch in to help, our efforts followed by a barbeque dinner at a local campground. In November it’s just us, but we follow the cleanup with hamburgers and camaraderie. Besides our adopted stretch of the river, we often donate money to worthy conservation causes. We have given money to the Texas Rivers Protection Agency for their ongoing legal battles and donations helped purchase Hildago Falls on the Brazos River to keep it open to paddlers. This year money given to the San Marcos River Foundation helped fund their ingenious plan of buying water to leave in the river as protection for wetlands and

The TCRA has adopted a 14 mile stretch of river from the City of San Marcos that we are responsible for cleaning twice a year. On the first Saturday in March and November you will find racers putting aside their competitiveness, unless of course, you count who has the most trash, who has found the most golf balls, or even who is the most helpful getting the trash over Ottine or Gonzales Dam, mandatory portages made more difficult with 50 lbs of trash. Often the weather does not cooperate. This year, for instance, temperatures were in the 30’s in March and two years ago it was flooding in November. But we do what we can. Our

estuaries at the bay. This plan is unprecedented and has the water board baffled. The TCRA is about racing, but we are also about conservation. As we trudge up the bank at the end of a clean-up with tires, motorcycle parts, “Wilson” the basketball with a face smeared with mud, and innumerable bags of trash, we are satisfied that the river looks better than when we found it. We feel good about giving our time, talents and money to protect and beautify the rivers where we race.
