COLORBLIND IN THE COURTROOM

The Supreme Court leans towards striking down affirmative action.

On October 31,the Supreme Court heard cases against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina’s race-conscious admission policy. Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) argued that the practice of considering race in applica tions, also known as affirmative action dis criminates against Asian students. Propo nents of affirmative action are concerned about the decrease of Black and Latinx rep resentation in higher education if the court strikes down this policy.

SFFA’s case is built around the claim that Asian students are racially profiled in col lege admissions and thus held to a higher standard due to the stereotype that Asian students are more studious and intelligent. This case brings up conflicting feelings for many in the Asian community regarding their stance on affirmative action. Ms. Ly, a student teacher at Garfield voiced, “I think the intentions of it are good, but there are better ways to go about it.” She referenced the 2021 case of the North Thurston school district in Washington who proposed that Asian students be categorized the same as

white students, criticizing the erasure of the boundaries and lack of privilege Asian students face. Ms. Ly noted her person al experience of seeing her nephew who lives in California get rejected from count less universities despite a rigorous course load and 4.0 GPA. At the same time, Ly mentioned, “going to college changed the course of my life and allowed me to now speak from a place of privilege,” and that her perspective only reflects her experi ences. Some in the Asian community are apprehensive about SFFA’s case due to its likely ulterior motives. Ed Blum, the face of SFFA is a White man who had previous ly tried to sue the court over affirmative action with a white student as the plaintiff. Historically, affirmative action has been an issue conservatives have opposed, a group that historically has not represented or had the interest of the Asian community. Supporters of affirmative action question if conservatives are merely exploiting the nuanced racial dynamics of being Asian in America to further their own party mis sion.

Affirmative action as we know it today was introduced by President John F.Ken nedy, and his successor Lyndon Johnson enacted it into law in 1965 in efforts to increase equity in education and employ ment. The policy was first challenged in 1978 by a White student who sued the state of California over admission discrimina tion based on race. The court ruled in favor of the University, deciding that race could be used in admission decisions but racial quotas were unlawful. In the years since, three more cases have been filed against af firmative action, in which the court main tained its stance.

The debate on the legality of affirmative action largely falls on the interpretation of the 14th Amendment, the crowning tri umph of Reconstruction, which ensured equal protection under the law regardless of race. Many conservative judges view equality in the constitution to mean treat ing all people the exact same, therefore laws such as affirmative action that give race based benefits go against the found ing father’s writing. Justice Ketanji Brown

refuted this colorblind stance in the SFFA hearing, where she said, “I don’t think that the historical record establishes that the founders believed that race neutrality or race blindness was required.” Justice Brown’s analysis argues that the constitu tion intended to achieve equality by ac counting for the deep rooted privilege and oppression determined by race. UNC and Harvard lawyers supported this stance by referring to the Reconstruction laws that gave Black Americans specific benefits, ranging from land to education under the same Congress responsible for the 14th Amendment.

Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thom as, and Chief Justice John Roberts all have previously dissented upholding affirma tive action. The three remaining conser vative justices were appointed by Trump in the past several years, and will all likely vote in favor of SFFA. A decision from the Supreme Court is expected in June.

Whether you’re an eager freshman try ing to get ahead on community ser vice hours or a stressed senior trying to squeeze them in, now is the right time to do it! Below are three organizations cur rently looking for volunteers.

The Backpack Brigade was founded in 2014 and had a simple mission - to feed hun gry children. Many low-in come and displaced students can only eat the free breakfasts and lunches they receive at school, and some students find it necessary to take some of it home for their families. The Backpack Brigade wants to help bring weekend hun ger statistics down as much as possible. Ev ery Thursday during the school year, vol unteers pack bags of nutritious, easy-to-eat food and drop them off at K-12 schools in Seattle, where they are distribut ed to students who need them.

Powered by volunteers and strengthened through dona tions and sponsors, Backpack

Brigade aims to provide better food to more of Seattle’s hungry children each weekend. Volunteers are in charge of prep ping, packing, and delivering food. Visit https://www.backpackbrigade.org for more information.

Lifelong has been in opera tion since 1992. They aim to assist individuals with chron ic illnesses like cancer, kidney disease, and HIV by ensuring adequate access to nutritious foods. They offer culturally inclusive prepared meals, grocery bags, nutrition classes, and counseling. Lifelong also caters to hospital patients and people who have recently been discharged from hospitals. Volunteers who are interested in continuing this mission can pick which area of the program they want to help out in, from meal bagging to working in the kitchen. Kitchen volunteers must be twelve or older, accompanied by a parent if un der eighteen, and possess a Food Workers

Card. Experience with cooking is prefera ble, given that you will be slicing and dic ing food. Meal baggers must be sixteen or older, able to stand for long periods, and lift ten to thirty pounds. For more infor mation, contact volunteer@lifelong.org or visit lifelong.org.

The Big-Brained Superheroes Club’s mis sion is to tap into the hidden strengths that live within the youth of the Yesler Terrace community. From 4:30 - 6:30pm, the BigBrained Superheroes learn how to con sider both how and why the world works as well as how to make the world better for everyone. They combine real-life big brain superpowers, and imagination skills to create an ultimate force of good in the community and the world by participating in advanced STEM projects like building robots. This club expects a lot of collabo ration, creation, and craftsmanship. They expect that kids and adults from all races,

Bolsonaro started his term from January 1 2019, and has since passed many laws and policies which led to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest and harmful pandemic response. His last day of office will be December 1st.

FREE SPEECH ABSOLUTIST

World’s richest man buys Twitter, what could happen?

On October 27 2022, Elon Musk official ly completed a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter. It marked the end of a highly publicized months-long saga that goes all the way back to April. Featuring numerous tweets, documents, a legal case that almost went to court, and exorbitant sums of mon ey, this buyout also raises concerns about the proliferation of hate speech and misin formation.

Twitter is one of the largest social media companies in the world. Founded in 2006, it has since grown to serve 330 million users worldwide. It has frequently faced criticism and controversy on the spread of hateful or misleading content through the site. To deal with hateful or misleading content, Twitter has a set of content mod eration policies outlining what cannot be posted, and will take action when posts are in violation of the policies. In January 2021, Twitter banned the account of the former president Donald Trump, from the site for “inciting violence”. This was imme diately after the January 6 Capitol Insur rection, which Trump actively advertised on Twitter. Additionally, Trump and others used Twitter to spread Covid-19 misinfor mation, such as promoting unproven and

potentially dangerous drugs like hydroxy chloroquine as a cure for Covid-19 and downplaying the severity of the pandem ic. The difference between free speech and false or hateful speech is like balancing on a knife’s edge. Thus, the content moderation policies of Twitter have always been the subject of scrutiny and debate ever since the company was founded.

Elon Musk is the richest person in the world, with a net worth of almost 200 dol lars. He has been involved in numerous large com panies, such as Payp al, Tesla, SpaceX, and now, Twitter. He is of ten known for his on line publicity stunts and willingness to endorse inflammatory or mis leading content. He has described himself as a “free speech absolutist”, and openly criticized Twitter’s guidelines mon itoring hate speech and misinformation, saying they restrict free speech. In May, he publicly stated he would reinstate Donald Trump’s account on Twitter if his deal with

the company went through. Musk soft ening restrictions on what can be posted allows individuals and organizations to spread inaccurate, false, and hateful mes saging.

Already, the effects of Musk’s acquisition of Twitter are beginning to show. Many big changes have already been made at the com pany. On November 4, Musk announced had person workforce in half. To justify this, Musk said Twit ter was losing up to $4 million a day. Musk also targeted the company’s top executives; firing CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, and Policy Head Vijaya Gadde. In response to Musk’s decisions, many of the company’s leaders in security, content moderation, and sales have resigned from their po sitions. Regarding the fears around hate speech and misinformation, Musk has

UK economic recession

The United Kingdom is currently at the beginning of an economic recession. A recent proposal for tax cuts brought the British pound’s value to a 37-year low, and caused severe backlash against Prime Min ister Liz Truss. After being in office for just 44 days, –the shortest term a prime minis ter has ever served– Liz Truss resigned. On October 25th, Rishi Sunak, who originally lost to Truss in the election, took over the position. However, the economic struggles remain, and it’s costing the UK.

stated that no changes will be made, until a “Content Moderation Council” completes a review on the company’s content mod eration policies. However, even with no change to the actual policies, those spew ing hate speech seem to be emboldened by the simple presence of Musk as the head of Twitter. Researchers at Montclair State University, in New Jersey, have found that the usage of terms commonly found in hate speech increased four-fold immedi ately after Musk’s acquisition was officially announced.

Free speech is an undeniable right, but can it go too far? After all, The Constitution states that Congress shall “make no law…. abridging freedom of speech”, yet judg es and justices have ruled time and time again that there are exceptions. What those exceptions are and where they apply, is al ways up for debate.

AN EVOLUTION IN FILMMAKING

Reviewing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, an empowring work of art.

Although the Black Panther star Chad wick Boseman sadly passed away in August of 2020, the series lives on with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the movie stars Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta, and Dominique Thorne. The first cool thing this movie does is memorialize Chadwick Boseman without taking away from the movie itself. Another interesting thing is that the trailer doesn’t even come close to portraying how good the movie is. Originally I thought that the new characters in this sequel would take away from the originality of the mov ie but that was not the case. This new plot beautifully ties in another minority group of pre-columbian Aztec culture that has faced oppression and colonialism simmi larly to the West African civilization of Wakanda. A strong bond is formed be tween these Black and Brown nations as they are forced to question whether blood for blood is the solution for their losses. Black Panther: Wakanda Forev er is light, fresh and has a good mix be tween seriousness and a playful come

dic side. What makes it exceptional is the balance between real human emotion and heroicness. We know that all superheroes are supposed to be strong and able to with stand anything, but this movie also shows the reality of that pressure and allows them to break down. This makes the characters and the events feel more realistic, thus cre ating an incredibly strong connection be tween the characters and the audience.

Another thing that makes Black Panther:

Wakanda Forever phenomenal is how it incorporates Black and Brown empow erment alongside feminism. In all early Marvel movies, the protagonists are white men with white women as the love inter est and little ethnic diversity. However, this shifts in the movie. It’s very refreshing to see them breaking down stereotypes and giving powerful, smart, and beautiful representations of women of color. Specifically African American, Lati na, and West African female repre sentation. This is seen in characters like technological mastermind Shuri, leader of the Royal Guard Okoye, the Queen of Wakan da Ramonda, it introduces new characters like Riri Williams (aka Ironheart, Iron Man’s new succes sor) who is an amazingly young and gifted African American woman. It also introduces Nam or who is the king of the under water kingdom of Talokan. The representation that the Talokan kingdom and these women have

in the movie renders a new era of ethnical ly diverse cinema, an evolution in filmmak ing. This is important for Black and Brown people, especially women of color, who will be inspired by these characters and contin ue to break down their stereotypes. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will leave you ruminating and at a loss for words, but make sure you don’t miss the mid-credit ending scene! When you watch this movie you will appreciate the captivating plot full of twists and turns, the amazing cultural representation, the stunning cinematogra phy that beautifully captures the incredible settings and most importantly the incredi ble characters that show a shift in the right direction for all movies to come.

FEAST WITH FRIENDS Why

Aspin on America’s favorite November holiday has increasingly gained popu larity over the years, trading the occa sionally dreaded family dinner for a dinner with close friends. Friendsgiving is a lowstress, high-reward, dinner that incorpo rates everyone’s favorite parts of Thanks giving such as the selection of foods, while leaving out the unwanted guests, potential glares and whispers, and familial judgment that comes with the yearly reunion. A typi cal Friendsgiving dinner takes place within the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving day, however that’s not to say it can’t also occur after or even the day of Thanksgiving.

Those who don’t have the best con nection with their family, being immedi ate or extended, might seriously consider gathering a group of friends, and hosting their own Friendsgiving dinner filled with acceptance, love, and of course, gratitude. Anything you may miss from your family’s annual Thanksgiving dinner can be made up for in fun new traditions, foods, and ex periences amongst your friends.

“It can be any size, I think six, eight, ten [guests], too much more than that, then it’s hard to get everyone around one table.”

Can I show up empty handed?

“It’s good manners to always show up with something, whether it’s flowers or cider or something you made. I just think it shows that you’re a part of it.”

GROUP A: QATAR, ECUADOR, SENEGAL, NETHERLANDS

Today, football is the most popular sport in Qatar, and it will undeniably continue soaring to new heights. Their national team has been making steady progress in recent years. In the summer of 1993, they reached their highest ever FIFA rating of 53. Then, they far exceeded ex pectations by qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Their ability was further proved after putting up 7 wins in the second round. All the same, this year’s competition will not be short of a challenge. Pitted against the Netherlands, Senegal, and Ecuador in Group A, Qatar will have to put up a fight. Fans should keep an eye out for goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb, left back Abdelkarim Hassan, and forward Hassan Al-Haydos.

GROUP B: USA , ENGLAND, IRAN, WALES

The United States is back in the World Cup for the first time since 2014, after failing to qualify in 2018. With one of the youngest teams in the tournament, the average age being 24, the team is looking to turn the page on some disappointing past performances and advance from a tight Group stage. The squad features a number of talented young players, many from clubs overseas including: Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Sergino Dest. Pulisic, a forward for Chelsea, is widely considered to be at the top of this generation of American players and will look to lead the team offensivley. Adams, a midfielder for Leeds United, and Dest, a fullback for AC Milan, are both well rounded players that can make plays on both ends of the field. On top of this, the team has a number of unproven yet potential young stars such as 22 year old Tim Weah. Weah’s father, played for the Liberian national team in the 80s and 90s and is considered to be one of the greatest African football players of all time. Though Weah is not yet at that level, his time with French club Lille has been promising and he could easily have a breakout tournament. The group stage could pose some challenges for the US with group B considered to be one of if not the most challenging draw. The team ranks slightly above Iran (22nd) and Wales (19th) at 16th overall, but well below England (5th in the world). With solid play and minimal mistakes the US projects to advance in the 2nd spot and, though as previous cups have shown, even the 1st spot is really anyones for the taking.

GROUP C: ARGENTINA, SAUDI ARABIA, MEXICO, POLAND

Argentia heads into Qatar with the 3rd best odds of winning the title according to FIFA analytics. La Albiceleste- meaning The White and Blue Sky in spanish, have been dominant over the past several years with 35 straight wins (the longest active unbeaten streak), and were one of only 2 teams to go undefeated in the qualifying stage. The team is led by Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest soccer player of our time, who’s presence alone makes the team a serious contender. With a recently implemented 4-3-2-1 formation and veteran stars on the attacking front, Messi could lead a nearly unstoppable offense. On the other end of the field, the team struggles some on defense, being left vulnerable to count er attacks, however playing in a relatively weak group C should give them some time to work the issues out. With this being both Messi and legendary winger Angel Di Maria’s final world cup, the team will look to write a happy ending to the two’s storied careers, and win the country’s first world cup since 1986.

GROUP D: TUNISIA, FRANCE, AUSTRALIA, DENMARK

Despite a messy 1-0 defeat to Mali in qualifying rounds, Tunisia secured a spot in the World Cup for the 6th time. With their first qualifi cation in 1978, the team scored a win against Mexico, making them the first African team to have won a cup match. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been an easy climb going forward. Having only won one other match in 2018, they have never succeeded in advancing past the group stage. Australia and Saudi Arabia are the only two nations trailing behind Tunisia in terms of total World Cup matches won. Having earned their way to the cup finals again could be a sign of brighter prospects, however. It isn’t their first qualification, but the team now features a promising new coach, Jalel Kadri. Despite a loss against Brazil in September, the team has acquired a number of considerable victories under Kadri. He offers a fresh outlook after the disappointment that arose from former manager Mondher Kabaier’s show at the African Cup of Nations. That’s not to mention the influx of new players since the World Cup in 2018, many coming from more than a single nationality. A few include Yan Valery, Anis Ben Slimane, and Omar Rekik. On the other hand, there are concerns surrounding team captain Youssef Msakni, who was barred from the 2018 World Cup due to injury. All the same, his return could be another signifier of benefit. All in all, these internal changes within the team are building anticipation for their performance in the finals.

GROUP E: COSTA RICA, SPAIN, GERMANY, JAPAN

Costa Rica doesn’t have as long of a history with the World Cup as other countries, with 1990 being the year of their debut. That doesn’t speak to their abilities, though. In 2014, the team pushed through to the quarter-finals with a record-beating performance. That was to the dismay of many reporters, who were confident that they had no shot against some of the world’s top teams. The team, or La Sele, has won 5 matches and is the only Central American team to do so. The Cup Squad this year features players that have proved to be worthy. Defensive midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda has already been in two World Cups while the reliable Johan Venegas will be up-front as expected. It may not come as a surprise if Costa Rica leaves the tournament with grand achievements, perhaps ones even more memorable than their run in 2014.

GROUP F: CROATIA, BELGIUM, CANADA, MOROCCO

Croatia, a small independent nation of only 3.8 million people, is coming off its best-ever World Cup showing after reaching the final in the 2018 Russia World Cup. Croatia survived three extra-time encounters in the knockout stage, including multiple penalty shootouts, before los ing to France 2-4 in the final. But can they do it again, and this time win it all? So far, their odds are solid. In 2020, Croatia emerged from the Euros with only two wins, failing to advance past the round of 16. But since then, Croatia has lost only one international friendly, even beating rivals France and Denmark in the past few months. Following this winning streak, Croatia is looking competitive heading into Qatar under the leadership of Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric. Among his generation’s best midfielders, Modric has earned 17 major trophies and more than five personal awards throughout his career. The country’s official 2022 roster boasts a number of new faces, as well as nine players returning from the 2018 squad. Along with Modric, veteran players Ivan Perisic, Marcelo Brozovic, and Dejan Lovren complete the line-up. New rising stars include defenders Josko Gvardiol and Borna Sosa. Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic is also a stand out. Considering Modric’s older age (37), this may be his last World Cup. Similarly to Ronaldo and Messi, Modric has a lot to prove. If things go right, the Croatian team could find themselves back in the finals, working to gain redemption for their country and pride.

GROUP G: CAMEROON, BRAZIL, SERBIA, SWITZERLAND

This World Cup marks Cameroon’s (AKA The Indomitable Lions) 8th qualification -- the most of any African Country. They enter as one of the tournament’s biggest underdogs. After a disappointing finish in last year’s African Cup of Nations, the team brought on Rigobert Song, a former Cameroonian player, to take over the head coaching role. Initially, Song only saw up and down success, until the team narrowly qual ified for the world cup, when in stunning fashion, they upset Algeria on a goal in the 4th minute of stoppage time during the qualifying play offs. The Lions are led by players Vincent Aboubaker, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa. Both Aboubaker and Choupo-Moting start as forwards, leading Cameroon’s offense- the strength of their team. On the defensive end Anguissa has all the skills to shut down attackers and lead a counter attack. At 58th in the world, Cameroon is dwarfed by Group G’s - Brazil (2nd), and talented Switzerland (15th), and Serbia (28th) teams, and will need more than a little of its qualifying magic if it’s going to advance from the group stage.

GROUP D: PORTUGAL, GHANA, URUGUAY, KOREA

Portugal is set to enter the World Cup with an experienced and dangerous lineup. Although the team has seen success in the past, such as win ning the Euros in 2016, they were eliminated in the Round of 16 in both the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Euros. In fact, Portugal has not made it past this stage in any of the previous three World Cups. In 2014, they even failed to advance out of their groups. Christinao Ronaldo, the 37 year old football star and team captain, is looking to add a world cup win to his name before he retires - as will other top players of this generation. Even though Qatar will mark Ronaldo’s final World Cup showing, the next generation of this team is promising. Ronaldo will be partnered with multiple young forwards, including Joao Felix and Rafael Leao, both only 23 years of age. Behind this first line of attack are stars Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandez, Joao Cancelo, and 39 year old Pepe. While Ronaldo is typically the face of the Portugal program, this event should provide younger players with the chance to step up and lead the team to victory. With this combination of players, Portugal, the 9th FIFA ranked team, has a good chance to go all the way.

Sweatshirts with team and school logos have also been very popular this fall, and since the Garfield student store is back up and running, purple hoodies can be seen everywhere you turn, on students and There’s a chill in the air but that has not made tank tops any less of a staple in Gar field’s wardrobe. Cropped tank tops are typically worn with baggy jeans or wide leg yoga pants. To keep things cozy Garfield students have been pairing them with puffy winter coats, which be came popular a couple years ago and have stayed in style ever since.

DEAR DAWGS

We’re glad to be back...

Dear Dawgs, It’s my senior year, and my friends have been hanging out a lot without me lately, going to parties and stuff like that. I know it sounds bad but…I’m struggling to find a reason to care. It’s not that I don’t like hanging out with them, but I’m just not getting the FOMO I feel like I SHOULD be getting. Especially with college coming up, I’m worried

I’ve spent the last 4 years of my life forming meaningless friend ships.

APATHETIC ABOUT ACQUAINTANCES

Dear APATHETIC, Sometimes, it takes that long to figure out who you really want to be friends with. Espe cially during high school, there’s a lot of pressure to make friends

with everyone and be sociable, and some people are genuine ly happy doing that! Others, however, are the type of people who are perfectly content with having a smaller circle and not going out all the time, or even at all. College makes everyone rethink everything, so maybe you’re starting to realize who you are, who you like, who you want to spend time around. If you feel like you want to try

couple high school parties! We promise, in the grand scheme of things, you’ll be just fine. As they say, protect your peace, babes.

FLAG FOOTBALL GETS FEMININE

A preview of Garfield High School’s newly announced girl’s flag football season.

Garfield has become the latest school to join Seattle Public School’s Girls’ flag football league. This comes after a huge $250,000 commitment from the Seattle Se ahawks and an additional $100,000 com mitment from Nike to WIAA to support the growth of the league over the next five years. The creation and official recognition of flag football by schools Chief Sealth, In graham, Nathan Hale, and Rainier Beach have paved the way for all-girls schools such as Holy Names Academy to get in on the football fun.

And while flag football shares a namesake and thus many similarities with tradition al football, there are still some key differ ences. For one thing, flag football requires only half the players–at least seven per team. There is also the question of price. American football is single-handedly the most heavily funded sport in the district, partially for the hefty price of the safety equipment necessary to keep athletes safe.

CITY STROLLS

Three spots for urban hikes in Seattle.

Imagine a hike where you don’t have to center your entire day around making the trek to a remote location. Urban hik ing is an alternative type of hiking, defined as a “walk through the city with a sense of adventure.” As Seattleites, we are fortunate to live in a city with a plethora of urban hiking options. Here are three popular spots for prime Seattle urban hikes.

Interlaken Park:

A heavily wooded hillside in between Montlake and Capitol Hill, the park is 51.7 acres with a trail of 1.1 miles. This park is located by Steven’s Elementary and Volun teer Park. Interlaken is known for its varia tions in incline and lush canopy.

A park in Magnolia, on the shores of the Puget Sound, with 2.8 miles of trails. It is the largest park in Seattle, and is built on the historic grounds of Fort Lawton. Dis covery Park is more coastal, with an au thentic lighthouse and views of the Puget Sound.

Washington Park Arboretum:

A swampy park in Montlake on the shores of Lake Washington. The park is 230 acres and contains playfields as well as a Japanese garden. There is a 3.8 mile loop trail that includes a boardwalk over the water. Fea turing maple and cherry trees within the

Expanding more on her hopes for team safety, Neal said, “I think maybe having someone that can monitor our safety and make sure that we’re okay.” This is a common concern between many teams, considering that Garfield only has

Many who have expressed interest in the team have found themselves at a standstill when trying to find information. “Peo ple ask me, like what flag football is but honestly, I [still] have no clue,” Neal said. According to O’Mahony, “During soccer season [Ms. Lynch] came out and talked to everyone, [and said] ‘we’re adding [Flag Football] do you guys want to sign up?’… [but] we haven’t received anything since.” Neal shared a similar sentiment, explain ing that interested players are aware that

the team is happening, but haven’t learned anything about what the season will real ly look like. Ms. Lynch gets information regarding schedules, game days, coaches, and rules from the Metro League, but has not yet received any news from the head of this league.

Players are anticipating new information soon, as the season has already started for other winter sports such as Girl’s Bowling and Gymnastics.

Despite the lack of clarity, players are excited to join the sport. “Some people do Powderpuff for school... and I think [flag football] will be something that the girls can have fun with and enjoy.” Neal said. The prospect of having an option for non-men to participate in what has been referred to as America’s greatest sport is a view shared among many hoping to get involved this Winter. Keep an eye out Bulldogs, details should be posted soon.

park, this location offers natural views and

We reviewed a hike in Interlaken Park: From the moment we walked down the stairway into Interlaken Park, it felt as if we were miles away from the busy streets. The thick tree growth and steep hillsides obstruct the ambiance of Seattle, allowing you to focus completely on nature. The air was fresh and we were surrounded by birds squawking from the canopy above.

The trail itself can be best described as ‘choose your own adventure’. There are constant forks, which adds unpredictabil ity to the journey. They allow you to make impulsive decisions and see where the

forest spits you out. We ran into a couple of cool features along our hike, such as a small creek flowing at the bottom of the ra vine and a pretty stone bench.

Overall, we felt rejuvenated by the expe rience. As people who generally are reluc tant to go on hikes, Havana and I found a happy compromise in urban hiking. We experienced the same relaxing benefits of nature found on a longer hike, yet the brevity of the trip (under an hour) allowed us to be productive the rest of the day.

B*TCHES GET RUFF

Powderpuff: An insider view on the controversial girls’ football game.

On Thursday, November 10th, the junior and senior Garfield girls faced off in the annual powder puff game at Mud Park. A popular high school tradition across the United States, powderpuff is the yearly football game between the school’s female upperclassmen, to encourage school spirit. This year’s powderpuff marked a contin uation of Garfield’s return to traditional events after having a year off due to covid.

The game started out fairly tame, with the seniors scoring 3 touchdowns, but by the end, like most years, it had devolved into disorganized wrestling in the mud, as many had predicted. Some of the top per formers were senior quarterback Sophia O’mahony, Eva Stepherson, and junior Mollie Mclaughlinn.

Garfield’s version of the game is notably different from most other school’s. In par ticular, Garfield’s powderpuff is not sanc tioned by the school. It is entirely student run and loosely structured, and players may engage in some illicit activities. As a result, there are no concrete rules, few as signed positions, and a crowd-defined field boundary that gradually shrinks over the

course of the game — not to mention that the entire park could fit into a single class room.

At schools where powderpuff is authorized by administration, the game may be played on the school field or in their gym. There also may be more of a male role, with the men acting as cheerleaders and even performing a halftime show. At Garfield, anyone who is not playing is only allowed to be a spectator.

Eva Stepherson, a player on the senior team, ex plained some of the preparation that goes into powderpuff at Garfield. The selection of the teams and who gets to play comes

down to only one thing: whether or not you’re up for it. There are no tryouts, no cuts, and no special requirements to play apart from being an upperclassmen. “Whoever says they want to play will get their playing time,” Stepherson said. She went on to express some of her thoughts on the preconceived no tions surrounding powderpuff. She admitted that “a lot of people say it’s de meaning,” referring to the outfits play ers usually wear, but she assures that you don’t have to wear booty shorts to play.“You could wear a snowsuit,” Stepherson said. She also gave some insight into whether or not these traditions give off the wrong im

Want to get started in the gym but don’t know where to start?

The gym is a place where many people go to get stronger, build their bodies, and stay healthy by being active. But get ting started at the gym can be quite intim idating, as it’s hard to know where to start. Learning specifically which machines to use and what routines to follow can make your gym experience much less stressful. The first step in creating a structured rou tine is making a workout split. This means deciding which days, and in what order, you will target certain muscle groups. Many people alternate between doing mostly lower body exercises one day,and then the next doing chest and upper body exercises. There is also a difference in up per body days called push and pull days. Push days work the chest, shoulders and triceps, while pull days work the back and biceps. Routinely sticking to this schedule will help you work on all your body’s mus cle groups.

There are also many other factors that go into building your body other than just lifting and cardio. Eating habits are a huge

component! Bulking and cutting is a popu lar method many people use to build mus cle.

Bulking is when you eat a calorie surplus – which means consuming more calories than you burn off. This puts your body into an anabolic state: a growth phase where new tissue can be made.

This should be a controlled calorie sur plus. It’s most important to eat protein, fat and a substantial amount of carbs. During the bulking stage, you should be lifting as heavy as possible, as this is the time to pack on muscle. Cutting is the term used for the process of going into a calorie deficit. This comes after the bulking process because with the muscle gain, there comes fat gain. You burn more calories than you consume, and change your workout routine to max imize exercises that get your heart rate up and burn the most amount of fat possible, while still holding onto new muscle.

Going to the gym, getting stronger, and staying active is great, but most of all, working out improves your mental health.

According to Mayo Clinic, “regular exer cise can help with depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good endorphins and oth er brain chemicals that enhance your sense of well-being.” Exercising also increases confidence, and has positive impacts on the mind. Physical activity is proven to increase body temperature, which allows you to fall asleep more quickly and enter a deep er sleeping cycle. So many benefits from working out! Why not give it a try?

pression to the underclassmen. “It’s a way to bring all the classes together,” she said. While some people may say that it’s embar rassing or degrading, Stepherson loves the game. “For me, it’s powerful. After I played powderpuff… I felt so much stronger than I ever was.”

Junior participant Katie Njegovan also weighed in on the event, acknowledging some of its problematic aspects. While she agreed that technically anyone is allowed to play, she also noted that “it’s definitely a bit about popularity”. “When you boil it down, it’s girls wrestling in a place literally called ‘Mud Park’, but you could also think of it as a very fun tradition of each class coming together”. Njegovan also talked about Pow derpuff in previous years. For example, she said that in 2018, “It was very violent…the seniors absolutely beat up the juniors”.

While there are plenty of arguments around powderpuff one thing can be as sured, b*tches did get ruff.
