Mentioned in ArchDaily Magazine

“A city is a place where a small boy, as he walks through it, may see something that will tell him what he wants to do his whole life.” - Louis Khan. There used to be a certain chaos, but not disorder ...a creative chaos...the kind out of which life evolves. or some Mumbaikars, the city is only a transit space that links destinations and not an environment they live in or a community they engage with. There seems to be literally no space for dialogue except when claimed by violence and disruption that we do face periodically in Mumbai. Our main aim is to not only make this junction a simple area to pass through for the vehicles, but a lively junction, refreshing and convenient for the commuters. Considering the traffic pattern, certain zebra crossings were inconvenient for the pedestrians. Accordingly, they have been relocated. Similarly signals that created disorder were relocated. Vehicles travelling from Sion, Dharavi and Bandra-Kurla Complex unnecessarily have to pass through the Kalanagar Junction. A proposal for a road that by-passes the junction not only helps these vehicles travel faster, but reduces the traffic on the other roads. Certain roads weren’t used. Tra c could be redirected through these roads. Spaces below flyovers are being wasted and encroached. Certain activities may be introduced in this space, which shall be advantageous for the people in the area, but at the same time don’t invite more tra c. The skywalks are used by pedestrians. To increase its usage, activities can be hosted there. The Nandadeep garden’s entrance is not obvious. The compound wall height can be reduced to make the garden inviting. To make the hardscape user friendly, more seating to be provided. Trees to be planted along the footpath, such that they provide shade to the pedestrians and reduce the air pollution. A street is the narrative of a city and as such will change with time but here we are obliterating.

FROM ARCHDAILY MAGAZINE: Team DYPCA: Shreesha Arondekar, Gargi Thakur, Pooja Kudale, Anaya Patil, Snehal Sonawane, Asmita Rai, and Sayali Potnis (Student Category) proposed an organization that stacks a variety of uses along the traffic junction. The flyover serves as a covering for newspaper kiosks and commercial spaces, while an additional skywalk provides safe places for pedestrians to cross the intersection or use as community space. As with many of the other proposals, green space is developed in the pockets between the roads. Roadways are divided by use, peripheral lanes are used for slower moving traffic, turning vehicles and public transportation. The intersection is also simplified by eliminating the perpendicular intersection and creating a direction link that moves north-west along the site.

P O S T PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES Cluster designs shading each other

1. Sunny , Wind protected outdoor spaces to extend living areas in cool weather 2. Tree shading to reduce the effect of direct solar incidence on building 3. Open plan to increase cross ventilation 4. Most vulnerable solar incident surfaces insulated or cladded with reflective finishes 5. Flat roofs coloured in white to reduce heat absorption 6. Entrances are shaded 7. Good natural ventilation to reduce or eliminate air conditioning in warm weather 8. Windows shaded and oriented prevailing summer breezes 9. Usage of ceiling fans encourage to improve indoor air motion on hot days 10. Window overhangs designed according to latitude

1.Long term approach planning Communities can provide for plan implementation that allows integration of selected projects within other community development plans 2.Managing stormwater close to where precipitation falls, such as retention or similar hydrologically focused approach 3.Innovative technologies: Green infrastructure tools to improved air and water quality to cost savings to more community amenities. Fundamental aspect for integrated solutions 4.Coluntary approach to long-term planning described to comply CWA (Clean Water Act) requirements. For example, regular municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) developed intiasl plan that may work with EPA ACTIVE STRATEGIES AS PER THE GREEN INGRSTRUCTURE MODELLING TOOL BY EPFA
