The Third Year Study Trip to Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu was about exploring the construct of a South Indian temple town and looks into the centrality of the Thillai Natraja temple in its dynamic context. The Exhibition probed into one of the vital governing aspects of a South Indian temple town, Detail. The form of the temple is understood through its intricate ornament along with a comprehension of its tectonics with respect to its historical context. Additionally, the fabric of the city it is situated in is delineated through the same lens, producing an explicit installation of the diverse town. The narrative of the exhibition is derived from its people and their relations with the different fragments of the town they populate. A frenzy of spaces and events untwine with the help of stories, myths and legends presented by various characters, consequently streamlining the confusion of this dramatic temple town. The adopted mode of representation of the exhibition is through the creation of a fabric. An elaborate composition of the setting of the town is generated through the stitching of small details of the built form of the city, thus revealing a distorted God’s eye view of a South Indian temple town. The fabric helps locate the people and stories of the town therefore bringing out its identity.
The fabric of the town attempts to simulate the essence of the temple by means of its colour. The colour chosen to render the town emanates from the colours of the Gopuram. Additionally, the variation within the different colours of the built form of the town also influence the palette chosen for representation. The colour helps give character to the town by amalgamating the temple, its details, its people, and the fabric that they sit in.

A S H R A M A The Four Stages of Life This project aims to cultivate and enrich the sense of community among the people of Chidambaram. It highlights the common vein of community ideals that runs through the various diverse crafts of the town, be it the flower and vegetable gardening that sustains the trade of catering, bringing a boost in the economy, or be it spaces such as banquet halls and gardens that bring the community together to nourish and cherish their sense of togetherness, or be it the pottery and vertical gardening workshops that not only encourage people to create art, but also help them generate eemployement through the same. The oblique strategy adopted here is, “Repetition is a form of change.” This is inspired from the various customs that have been followed, trickling down generations, moulding themselves to the changing times, yet, still continuing to bind the community together into a cohesively growing unit. Such customs are an ode to the fact that people may change, however, they will continue to repeat the well trodden patterns of intermingling with the community, blossoming and growing into being well rounded individuals, as a result of the support and subsistence provided time and again by the people around them, as well as the numerous opportunities available to them, that help them rise to their fullest potential.

The literal form of a Havan can be seen as blocks stacked one upon the other. The stacked blocks can be iterated and distributed as spaces.
REPETITIVE SOCIAL CUSTOM BECOMES RESTRICTIVE A repetitive tradition of arranged marriage among the high caste people: - Brahmins - Pillai - Vaniyars - Mudaliyars Lack of matrimonial banquets Liberty to choose the partner. A place to meet people of their own choice, irrespective of caste- like a pavilio- open space.
ROUTINE-SELLING FLOWER A routine/repetition of daily activities visits the temple everyday Shops around have collaborated transportation cast Is highly in confident about his skills at gardening.
ROUTINE CAFE/CATERING A routine/repetitive activity visiting the temple for peace and resting people irrespective of face of him being Muslim-talking to people about catering Providing catering service to the temple as well as banquet-vegetarian food out of respect.
The Mandap serves as the altar for Hindu weddings. Adorned with floral decorations & bells, this wooden structure serves as the stage for which guests and family witness the couple wed. The Mandap consists of four pillars, symbolizing the 4 stages & aspects of life. ‘Agni’ is the Sacred Fire, which is central part of any traditional Hindu Wedding. It is considered vital for a happy married life. The ‘Vivaha Havan’ is meant to create an atmosphere of purity and spirituality.

H E R I TA G E H A R M O N Y HOUSING IN KOLHAPUR The Inner Core of Kolhapur, situated in close proximity to the revered Mahalaxmi Temple, is steeped in historical significance, boasting a tapestry of architectural marvels from various epochs and their respective rulers. This area not only showcases structures of historical importance but also encompasses a diverse range of housing typologies, including the traditional Wada houses, mixed-use commercial and residential buildings, and contemporary apartment complexes. The Inner Core is a bustling hub, characterized by a high influx of pilgrims and tourists, which has catalyzed the development of vibrant markets, hotels, lodging facilities, and more. Moreover, the area hosts pivotal nodes that facilitate public interactions. The Mahalaxmi Temple’s prominence in religious processions adds to the site’s vibrancy. It is situated along Rajaram Road, which permits only pedestrian movement, creating a constant buzz attributed to the presence of street vendors, making it a year-round hub of activity.

Due to the presence of the Mahalaxmi Temple, most of the religious processions take place in the inner core. The site lies along thr Rajaram Road which is a one way road, allowing only pedestrian movement while resisting the vehicular movement. The street remains busy throughout the year due to the presence of hawkers.

The Integrated Sustainable Development project in Karanja, Uran, is a holistic endeavor that embraces the site’s natural wealth, topographical advantages, and cultural heritage. Located in close proximity to water bodies, wetlands, estuaries, and mangroves, the project envisions a dynamic space where aquaponics, pisciculture, marketplaces, reed beds, and mangrove restoration coexist synergistically. This innovative design not only prioritizes environmental sustainability, community engagement, and the preservation of local culture but also promises to rejuvenate the ecosystem and promote resilience in the face of climate change. By capitalizing on the terrain’s natural contours, harnessing hydrological features, nurturing indigenous flora and fauna, and celebrating cultural traditions, this project embodies a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and sustainable development.

Achieving a closed loop system of water consumption while enhancing the revenue generated for the community through re-utilisation of resources. After identification of the pre-existing water catchment areas that exist because of natural drainage of water due to the slop gradient on site, the programme realises the importance of these areas as holding ponds that help in achieving a sustainable hydrological cycle. The indentified holding ponds then become ancilliary to the programmes. A continuous stream connects the holding ponds, transferring water

The sections have been cut through the pisciculture training center and the ponds around it in which the process of pisciculture takes place. Section A-A’ is cut from the reception and through the holding and fish pond that are connected through pipes underneath the pathways. Section B-B’ is cut from the feeder hut and the fishing and collection pond looking towards the side elevation and the boundary plantation that separates the center from the roads around.

Water beds are facing the nursury as well as the learning centre which helps people engage in the activities and learning together. Sections show the lining of the pond which is in stone and gravel. Gable stone pathway (meshed) takes you to the aquaphonics beds throught the vertical farmings. Pathway Also takes one around the pond and merges with the farm land entraces. Around the pond it helps in excessive water penetration and it does not flood.
Vertical farming over the bamboo structures as a part of the aquaponics. Other experiential bamboo structures with plants are places at the entrace of the aquaponics learning centre helps create a playful space. Green Overhead structure/planting creates eye catching entrance for children. Water beds and pond are placed nearby so as to ease the water transfering
