Empowered Women Conquering Unexpected Industries The Garland Chamber brings recognition to local women making their mark in the business world
Success is a term best defined by the individual in its pursuit. The goals, methods and trajectories involved in claiming success vary as widely as the personalities of people who have it in their sights, and if you ask the right questions, you’re bound to find the markings of success in anyone who truly cares to strive toward it. That’s true nowhere more than right here in Garland, Texas.
BREAKING TRADITION

In the pages that follow, you’ll meet three women finding success in Garland on their own terms, mastering historically male-dominated industries and maintaining that gender is an asset, not a liability. From varied backgrounds and with vastly different paths to the present, each of the women featured has a unique and inspiring story to tell; reminding us all that no matter the ladder of achievement you climb, no version of success comes without obstacles to overcome. Rising to the challenge is what sets success apart from failure, and Lily, Kristina and Julie give three real examples of how it’s done. DR LILY H OA N G – S H I NY SMI L E S PED I ATRI C D E NTI STRY
The last time you got your teeth cleaned, how did you feel? Did you dread the appointment? Did you chat nervously with the dental hygienist? Did the fluoride make you gag? It’s been estimated that nearly 60 percent of adults have some amount of fear associated with seeing a dentist, even for a routine check-up. Dr. Lily Hoang has made it her mission to “delete the fear of dentistry,” and she gets started with patients as young as six months old who have just cut their first tooth. Dr. Hoang’s path into the dentistry profession didn’t quite begin when she was of a pediatric age. In fact, she was nearly finished with a finance degree at Tulane University before she really found an interest in the healthcare field at all. After deciding a career in the cutthroat business world just wasn’t for her, inspired by her older sister who is a medical doctor, she started shadowing a range of professions to see if she could find something that fit. Researching several options, Dr. Hoang eventually landed on dentistry. Soon after, she earned a Master of Biomedical Science from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and was accepted into dental school at Western University in southern California.
She completed her Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in New York and her pediatric dental residency at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Officially a licensed pediatric dentist, Dr. Hoang and her husband relocated to the DFW Metroplex to be near family and she worked for a private practice in Frisco. Then, in July 2017 following the birth of her son, she decided to open her own practice. “I wanted to be able to provide for him, but also still be with him,” Dr. Hoang said. Only a year and a half after deciding that opening a private practice was the right move for her family goals, in September 2018 Dr. Hoang opened Shiny Smiles Pediatric Dentistry.
Though female entrepreneurship is increasing at a rapid rate in the United States, women are still statistically less likely to become business owners than men, a fact that Dr. Hoang was aware of, but not deterred by. She admits, navigating the process of launching her business while taking care of her newborn son certainly wasn’t easy, but entrepreneurship wasn’t an especially new or scary concept in her mind. Her mother was a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated convenience stores. When Dr. Hoang faced challenges of starting her own business and balancing a young family, she often channeled her mom.

“I watched her balance life, being a businesswoman and taking care of us,” Dr. Hoang said. “That’s part of why I went into business – just the flexibility; but it also comes with a lot of stress too.” According to Dr. Hoang, finding a good support system is truly the key to success. Her mom, her sister, and a collection of friends and colleagues offered her the inspiration, encouragement and advice that kept her moving forward, and they still do today. She says that women are most likely to succeed when they’re surrounded by other women who are willing to share their experiences. One of her most helpful resources? A Facebook group of female dental practice owners. They share ideas and learn from one another in a non-threatening, non-competitive environment, and they’re all better for it. Women are quickly coming to dominate the dental professional too, though being a female in the industry still comes with challenges. “Most of the dental suppliers and vendors, and the contractors, are all male,” Dr. Hoang said. “As a woman, I felt like maybe they didn’t take me as seriously or as strong as other male clients they had.” One of Dr. Hoang’s mentors, a family friend and fellow dentist, stepped in to teach some practical negotiation tactics that helped her through the process. Meeting with and sharing strategies among her fellow female entrepreneurs made the transition into business ownership not only doable, but exciting. “Every single day I feel like there’s something to learn and something to grow on,” Dr. Hoang said. For PAG E 7 | T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0
example, her community of dental entrepreneurs gave her the idea for one of her most successful marketing strategies, which also plays well into one of her long-term goals: teaching. “We go to schools and promote oral healthcare,” Dr. Hoang said. “We teach them how to brush, how to floss, we bring in a tooth fairy … We say ‘you’ve got to brush your teeth morning and night, two times a day for two minutes, or you’re going to get the sugar bugs! Sugar bugs climb into your teeth and they eat away your teeth!” Dr. Hoang follows up her student education with materials for parents and some dental hygiene goodies for the kids to take home. Her cheery personality makes it instantly easy to see why so many local families have already found and become patients at her relatively new Garland practice. She recommends that children visit the dentist as soon as they cut their first tooth so she can help parents learn how to care for young teeth and watch for warning signs of potential problems as the child grows. The practice is open late on Wednesdays and takes appointments one to two Saturdays a month to help accommodate the busy schedules of local families. “For the future, I hope to be growing – seeing more patients and just being part of the Garland community,” Dr. Hoang said. “I talk to a lot of adults who say, ‘Oh I hate going to the dentist. I was so scared as a child.’ I want my patients not to have that fear. My motto is to create shiny smiles with every patient and delete the fear of dentistry.”

KR I S TI N A LAWSON – D AI SY BRA ND
If you close your eyes and picture a manufacturing plant, what do you see? Bright and sterile? Is it dark and dusty? What are the people doing? And what do they look like? If you’ve never been inside a manufacturing plant or seen an episode of “How It’s Made”, you may struggle to get an accurate picture; and you wouldn’t be alone. Manufacturing is often misunderstood, thought to be dull, dirty and dead-end. In reality, it’s an industry full of innovation. Depending on the company and the products they manufacture, you may see high-tech robotics, artificial intelligence applications, and extremely efficient, highly functional floor plans. You might see some people on an assembly line, and you’ll also find highly skilled engineers, maintenance technicians, supply chain and safety experts. You’ll find a whole range of wonderful careers in manufacturing plants all over the world if you’re pursuing a job in the industry, but Kristina Lawson wasn’t. All she wanted was a college internship in Japan. Lawson grew up in a small farming community in eastern Oregon where she ran track and cross-country, joined the cheerleading squad and the dance team, and played the flute. Perhaps this is where her enthusiasm for learning and trying new things began. Further expanding her horizons in the eighth grade, Lawson’s family hosted their first international exchange student from Japan. Enamored with the experience and the culture she absorbed, Lawson eventually went on to do her own exchange program in Japan, then to major in International Business with a minor in Japanese at Oregon State University. For her next step, Lawson selected the University of Hawaii, which has a Japanfocused MBA program. The fast-track curriculum required a Japanese internship; and hers was with the global purchasing department for food manufacturer Kagome in Tokyo.
“When I graduated, recruiters saw food on my resume and they had an opportunity for me at a cheese manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City, Utah,” Lawson said. For three years, Lawson learned all about food processes and manufacturing operations. Then when her husband got a new job opportunity in Dallas, she started looking for her next career move too, which is when she found Daisy Brand. Hired as a Packaging Supervisor in 2008, Lawson’s enthusiasm and willingness to learn earned her several new opportunities in short order. From Quality Supervisor to Replenishment Supervisor, then Replenishment Manager, Assistant Plant Manager, Quality Manger, and finally in 2018, Plant Manager. “A technical degree, had I done it all again, probably would have helped me greatly; however, manufacturing is very people oriented too,” Lawson said. “I’m always one for opportunity … just getting in there and listening to what’s needed and then organizing things.” Lawson’s lack of traditional training gave her a fresh perspective in each department and allowed her to work closely with colleagues that were experts in those areas. For her, the learning curve was part of the excitement, as well as a key component in building trust with her team. “It’s quite surprising how willing people are to teach things to you if you just will listen to what they have to say,” Lawson said. “I think we get a little busy in our own initiatives. If you take the time to ask people questions and take a genuine interest in what they’re willing to teach you, it’s pretty T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0 | PAG E 8

amazing how many things people can really teach you. I’m very inspired by people who are doing ‘their thing’.” Though Lawson didn’t set out to pursue a career in manufacturing, she’s found great success in it. Her business school background and the way she’s moved throughout various departments of Daisy Brand allow for a wholistic approach to management and problem solving. She brings a great deal of skill in servant leadership, relationship building, and fostering a culture of teamwork as well, and the fact that she’s a woman that makes her position particularly unique. In an industry well known for being male-dominated, Lawson recognizes that her gender comes as a surprise to some people, but she was also quick to point out that it hasn’t been a roadblock in her path to success. “I don’t really think I’ve been put at a disadvantage,” Lawson said. “I don’t think it’s that
PAG E 9 | T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0
women can’t join [the manufacturing industry] or they don’t let them … I don’t know if it’s necessarily something that occurs to people to pursue.
Lawson’s aim isn’t to make engineers or maintenance technicians of the whole troop. She simply wants them to see a bigger picture.
It wasn’t on my list of things to go pursue. It’s just kind of what I found myself in.” At Daisy Brand in particular, the culture is focused on hiring great people. Lawson’s experience has been one of respect, trust and building people up. Those are the things she now works to share with young girls like her daughter as a Girl Scouts Troop Leader, broadening their horizons to expose them to a more diverse range of options.
This is a goal she has for her team at Daisy Brand as well. Lawson’s time moving throughout the company taught her a lesson about understanding processes from start to finish, and how small changes in one department can have big impacts for another.
“I think we expose them to what we’re familiar with and if you don’t come from a technical background, then you don’t necessarily think of those things,” Lawson said. Recent emphasis on STEM education for young women is making a noticeable impact, but
“I’m not the chemistry set person,” Lawson said. “I’m the relationship builder and the people person. Sometimes people find themselves doing things that make tasks easier, quicker or faster without realizing these alternate approaches can cause a lot of work and frustration for other contributors.” Lawson is able to bridge those gaps because she believes whole-heartedly in one very simple idea. “I work for people; they don’t work for me.”

J UL I E D I L L DUNN & D ILL C P AS, P .C.
JULIE D IL L – D UN N & D I L L C PAS, P.C.
If you asked a group of kids what they wanted to be when they grew up, “accountant” probably isn’t one of the responses you’d hear; and it’s not the response Julie Dill would have given you either. Julie was born and raised in Garland, Texas and it was during an accounting class her senior year at South Garland High School that she first thought, “This is it.” But long before she ever decided on the University of North Texas or declared her major, Julie’s career began with the desire to stand on her own two feet. “I wasn’t really planning on being a CPA … I was just glad to go to college,” Julie said. “I was the first one in my family to get a college degree. My parents didn’t push me to do it; I just always had it in the back of my mind that I needed to get one so I didn’t have to depend on anybody. I could be independent.” Logic, and a little observation of the world around her, told Julie that having a credentialed skill would grant her the stability she wanted. She graduated in 1992 and went right to work, but she wasn’t satisfied yet. Julie found herself stuck in most people’s stereotypical view of an accounting job; sitting in an office crunching the same numbers, running the same reports, day after day. It didn’t take long for her to start seeking a new opportunity, which is when she found William L. Dunn & Associates. Bill Dunn offered Julie a staff accounting role, which she accepted with a pretty substantial pay cut. At that stage in her career, the opportunity was far more valuable than the salary, and it turned out to be exactly the right move. After just five years, in 2001, Julie took her CPA exam and Dunn offered her the opportunity to become a partner in the firm.
“He had trust in me and faith in me. He was always very supportive,” Julie said of Dunn. “’No question is a bad question’ is what he’d always say.” In the 23 years Dunn and Julie have been together, she’s come to recognize him as one of her most influential professional mentors. Though they never had a formal structure as such, he encouraged her growth and recognized her strengths, which made for quite a functional partnership. They trust each other enough to offer support and stay out of each other’s way. Rather than competing, they leverage their individual strengths to strengthen the business. Julie’s position as a partner is, unfortunately, rare in the industry. According to the 2015 CPA Firm Gender Survey conducted by the AICPA, just 24% of all partnership positions at CPA firms were held by women. Several sources indicate that the percentage has continued to climb in the last five years, primarily in smaller firms like Dunn & Dill, but the gender gap persists. When asked if gender had ever been a barrier for her, Julie recalled her early years at the firm. “When I started with Bill, I noticed there were a lot of clients that were men that would not talk to me,” Julie said. “They required to talk to Bill. They were prejudice about women and thought they didn’t know anything.” Though she acknowledged Dunn had more experience than she did, she knew her stuff, and Dunn knew that too. “Bill would tell them, ‘You know what, you need to talk to Julie about this. She’s got the answers. She can help you.’ We just got past it eventually.” T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0 | PAG E 1 0
BREAKING TRADITION
More than 20 years later, those clients are a distant memory and Julie is certainly standing on her own two feet as a wellrespected professional in and around Garland. The firm works with more than 800 clients, business and personal, and the nine people on staff, according to Julie, make up the best team the firm has ever had. As they’ve grown, Dunn and Dill have worked together to create a culture that’s been highly influenced by Julie’s own experiences as a young working mother. As is true for many women in the workplace, Julie needed to succeed in her career and in her home, and achieving that balance takes some finesse. She recognizes that when you have a partner, a team, an employee you trust, it’s easier to be flexible on things like office hours and overtime. Getting the work done and serving clients well is the priority at Dunn & Dill, punching a clock is not. That culture gets a lot of the credit for why Julie never dreads going into the office. “I’ve been with Bill for 23 years and still, every day, I have no problem going to work,” Julie said. “I enjoy it.” Julie brings balance to the firm, focusing on the details, running the financials, and getting the job done for the clients she serves, but in more than two decades, there’s one thing she never thought she’d do.
The same independent, entrepreneurial attitude that spurred her college aspirations as a teenager led her to take a pretty big risk in 2017. She and her husband, Reagan, invested in the very first stand-alone building for Dunn & Dill. The building belongs to them, they managed construction and design of the whole thing, and now they have the firm as a tenant, along with a few other small, local businesses. “I never thought I’d be this far,” Julie said. So, after achieving college-grad status, earning her CPA, becoming a partner in the firm, and building the office, what’s next for Julie Dill? “I’m very happy where I am,” Julie said. “I don’t think I’ll even retire. I’d get bored. Even if it’s part time … Bill and I talk about it at times, if we want to sell or something like that, and I think we’ll both hang on and continue working. We both enjoy it!” Julie and her husband Reagan live in Sachse with their dogs, a longhorn named Bevo, a horse named Cash and a donkey named Mack. Together, they have four daughters who are her pride and joy, and whom she has always encouraged to try new things, ask lots of questions, and go after what they want.

Commercial real estate in the North Texas market is booming, but with more than 200 distinct municipalities in the Dallas Metroplex area, deciding where to invest can be challenging. Vast competition for prime office and industrial space drives prices up in both fast-growing suburbs and established downtown areas, while developing on open land in the outskirts of the Dallas region often involves expensive investment in new infrastructure. Among all these dynamic market shifts, Garland has emerged as a community with a distinct Affordability Advantage. Garland is a large and vibrant historic suburb of Dallas and, when compared to other fast-growing Metroplex communities, it becomes a uniquely attractive community for commercial investment. Garland is home to more than 20,000 companies, all of which have found strategic advantages in Garland’s proximity to Dallas, ease of access to surrounding cities, and the strong sense of community from Garland residents. Whether you’re looking to expand your operations in the D-FW area, relocate your corporate headquarters to a city with supportive infrastructure, or seek out a spot to set up shop for your business in a community that loves authentic, local finds, Garland has a lot to offer. Check out a few of the factors businesses consider in choosing Garland.

Breaking Chains in Male-Dominated Industries By Judith Collins - Dallas Metropolitan Small Business Development Center D A RLE N A KE LLY – OW NER SI MI D I G I , L L C
Darlena is killing it in the male-dominated field of technology with her online learning system. As a young African-American female entrepreneur she’s already made an impression on her Dallas community by accumulating a string of accolades and awards. She is recognized as a Top Ten Learning Management Consultant, by Education Technology Insight Magazine and recently won a pitching competition organized by Capital Factory, a tech accelerator. She also was given an Excellence in Business Award from the Dallas Fort Worth Minority Small Business Development Council (DFW – MSDC). Her company, SimiDigi, is a full-service workforce training and development company that specializes in building cloud-based interactive workforce training and top-notch onsite training solutions. SimiDigi helps organizations become data-driven through its platform and aims to put an end to the monotonous training sessions. Kelly is one of the SBDC's star clients, and she has a lot to share with her fellow entrepreneurs about the inspiration and philosophy behind her success. “Be true to you,” Kelly said. “l like to learn and I’m not afraid to try things that interest me. I have a degree in Animation and Game Development, which is technically an engineering degree. I’ve always been fascinated with technology as a young lady, but not many companies would look my way or consider me for hire. So, it’s no surprise that I’m the CEO and Creative Designer of my own technology company. Technology continues to impact our lives in bigger ways than ever before and I’m not afraid to be one of the few females that owns both a manufacturing and technology-centric business. I don’t see a lot of females, much less African American females, in this field so that motivates me to bring our unique perspective to the industry. I have two children, a boy and a girl, and they too motivate me to demonstrate that they can succeed in any space they imagine.” “Owning a business is a marathon not a sprint.” Kelly said that she owes her success to a lot of mentors who provided guidance and support on her small business journey. One of those mentors was Judith Collins of the Dallas Metropolitan SBDC. “Judith assisted me when it came to brand creation and identity," Kelly said. "She also coached me on how to position my brand so I can attract my target audience. I would say that the most important counseling I received from her is her motivation and her ability to manage my expectations as far as progressing from year to year. It wasn’t easy. There were days when I thought I should give up, but she coached me to stay in the game.” “Be innovative to stand out from the competition.” SimiDigi’s mission is to provide an immersive experience into the training process, unlike standard e-learning content. “We have developed a gamified training environment which makes the training more engaging and promotes retention," Kelly said. "Trainers, as well as learners, demonstrate what they learn in a virtual or visual platform. A picture communicates a thousand words.”
DA R L E N A KE L LY SIMID IGI, LLC
SimiDigi’s training solutions use 3D technology that improves the way companies with complex operations communicate. The company also goes a long way in reducing training costs while delivering effective training, maintaining compliance, scheduling training, and providing supporting documentation. Clients include mining, oil and gas, global health services, and any industry that needs effective, just-in-time training. “Give back when you can.” For the future, SimiDigi will focus on marrying Artificial Intelligence with training. “Our plans include launching a software called Automate Educate," Kelly said. "It will allow our customers to build innovative training content with ease. Automate Educate will be coupled with Artificial Intelligence and provide training, assessments and recommendations based on the skill level of the individual. My goal is to hire women who are just as passionate about technology and innovation as I am. Women are often overlooked when it comes to landing a career in a STEMbased role. I feel that we have so much to offer and we can bring a different perspective and challenge outdated ideas. I would like to build a team of rockstar women that include; Software Engineers, Programmers, Digital Artists and other important roles that will be vital to the success and growth of SimiDigi.” To learn more about SimiDigi, LLC visit www.simidigi.com T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0 | PAG E 2 2

With the freedom to choose your school and customize learning, no other district compares to Garland ISD. We’re preparing students PreK-12 for college, careers, military and life. You want the best? Choose the best. #ChooseGarlandISD We’re always enrolling! Visit Garlandisd.net/enroll for more.
Choice of School Program Garland ISD is the only option for true choice when it comes to public schools. Instead of worrying about attendance zones, our families have the opportunity to customize their educational experience with a unique Choice of School program that allows students to attend any campus in the district—whether it’s down the street or across town. Specialized curriculum options engage students in active, hands-on learning, from programming robots to studying stars in a portable planetarium. Students are also encouraged to explore potential passions for everything from piano and business to criminal justice and television production. Because we believe that all children are entitled to educational opportunities that meet their individual learning needs, we provide comprehensive special education services for students from birth through age 21 as well.
Growing Garland’s Workforce Whether you’re in need of a skilled workforce or services such as website design, marketing, culinary or pet grooming, Garland ISD’s Gilbreath-Reed Career and Technical Center (GRCTC) has got you covered. The GRCTC partners with the community and local businesses to help prepare Garland ISD students for successful careers. In addition to dual credit and industry certification opportunities, courses also provide real-world experiences. For example, architecture and engineering students are collaborating to design a new animal shelter for the City of Garland. “These students will walk away with a skill. They will walk away with a career,” said Dr. Phil Gilbreath, one of the GRCTC’s namesakes. Offering more than 90 advanced-level Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses, this state-of-the-art learning environment serves juniors and seniors from all seven Garland ISD high schools. Sophomores may also participate in culinary arts and firefighting courses. Additional areas of study include accounting, certified medical assisting, cybersecurity, dental assisting, fashion design, logistics, manufacturing and more. “It’s a one-stop shop with many modern tools and equipment recommended by industry experts and used in local businesses,” said CTE Director Dr. Erika Crump. “Students who train at the GRCTC have an advantage when they enter the workforce because of the experience they get here.” Also impacting younger students, the GRCTC is home to North Texas’ first JA BizTown, which allows all district sixth graders the opportunity to learn financial literacy, civic responsibility and more in a simulated city. Garland ISD is making its mark throughout Garland, Rowlett and Sachse. For more information, visit GarlandISD.net/grctc. PAG E 27 | T H E G A R L A N D G U I D E 2 0 2 0

Turning #DollarsIntoDreams LI SA C OX – GA RLA ND I SD EDUCAT I ON F OUNDAT I ON
As education evolves to continue meeting the individualized needs of all learners, so too does educational funding. In fact, education foundations are more important now than ever. They supplement school district budgets to increase opportunities for innovative teaching and learning. Serving as the Foundation President and District Corporate Initiatives Liaison, Lisa Cox is the woman behind the Garland ISD Education Foundation (GEF). “I came to Garland ISD in 2014 with more than 20 years of non-profit LI SA C OX management experience at Junior Achievement and the Austin ISD Partners in Education GI S D E D UC AT I O N F O UND ATI O N program,” she shared. With a marketing degree from McMurry University, Cox is more than able to meet GEF’s mission, “To create and foster partnerships with the community to generate funds that support the education of [Garland ISD] students to positively impact the future.” GEF awards more than $200,000 every year in teaching and learning grants and continuing education scholarships. From robots to musical instruments, school gardens to an audio recording studio, bachelor’s to master’s degrees, GEF helps fund the future of Garland ISD students and staff. “Quite simply, we’re turning #DollarsIntoDreams,” said Cox. “I am extremely grateful to all of our donors, volunteers and sponsors. Thanks to their generosity, the Foundation has gifted more than $3 million over the past 25 years.” But Cox has bigger aspirations. She continually seeks out new opportunities to support the district. In 2018, GEF held its inaugural Tinsel & Trivia event netting more than $75,000 for grants and scholarships. Other giving opportunities include a spring golf tournament, one-time contributions and more. Visit GISDEdFoundation.org for additional details.

Garland Offers App for City Service Requests
EAssist Garland is available now for free download at the Apple App and Google Play Stores.
EAssist, an app available from the City of Garland, is an easy way for residents to connect with the City to submit service requests, access news and information, and see other nearby requests in progress. EAssist also is available on the City’s website, GarlandTX.gov. Approximately 60 different service request types are available to residents. “A resident can simply enter the request type and select the location using their device’s GPS capabilities, and then it automatically routes it to the City department for resolution,” said Kevin Slay, Managing Director of Customer Service. “We will keep looking for ways to expand and improve the mobile app and online options.”
Once the app is downloaded, users will be required to create an account using an email address or linking to their Facebook accounts. Once created, users can set what type of notifications they receive, how they are delivered, and several other customizations. “EAssist empowers our residents,” Slay said. “This mobile app creates a direct link from the resident to City Hall in a simple, streamlined way.”

Ana Maria Aguilar De Young is passionate about serving others and has resided in Garland, Texas for over twenty years. She is an immigrant from Durango, Mexico. Ana Maria retired from the corporate world of accounting to dedicate herself to the community and her family. She is married and has two adult children and two adorable grandchildren. She is the President of Garland Flamingo Neighbors which includes a neighborhood crime watch, Vice President of Americas Chamber for Business-Garland, board member of The Matthew 25:40 Project and many other organizations. Her passion is giving to those who are in need because she believes the truth of this world is that we are all servants to one another, no matter the circumstances. As the Bible says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Galatians 6:9 NIV. Ana Maria has worked tirelessly in the Coomer Creek neighborhood to bring neighbors together socially, formed a crime watch, organized neighborhood trash pickups, advocated for street repairs, and has been involved in strategic advisory groups for the city. She consistently works to lift up the people around her, even visiting neighbors in the hospital and assisting with their recovery. She organizes the area’s national night out, has a strong relationship with our NPO, and recently brought sign toppers to the neighborhood. If we had neighbors like Ana Maria in every city, there is no doubt neighborhoods throughout America would be better than ever.

By Andrea Tamez, Garland Chamber of Commerce As awareness about mental and behavioral health increases, you’ve likely noticed a new type of healthcare facility popping up in Garland and throughout the country. If you have some questions like, “What’s their purpose?” or “What’s the difference between behavioral and mental health?” you’re not alone. Behavioral health and mental illness are often used interchangeably; and though they’re connected, they are very different. Behavioral health is the study of an individual’s behaviors, emotions, and biology, and how those factors impact an individual’s mental health. Examples include eating disorders and substance abuse. Mental illness is the emotional and psychological well-being of an individual. Examples include bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia. As society continues to understand that behavioral and mental health are crucial components of an individual’s overall wellness, healthcare facilities diagnosing and treating these conditions provide great value to a community. One in every five Americans, or an estimated 43 million adults, experiences mental illness each year. Current events and media attention regularly bring the startlingly high statistic and its far-reaching effects to light. Research indicates that often the behavioral health symptoms that lead to mental illness can show signs in early childhood stages. A study looking at family, community and healthcare factors related to mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders among children aged 2 to 8 years found that one out of every seven U.S. children in the age range were reported to have a diagnosed mental, behavioral or developmental disorder (CDC, 2019). Clearly, behavioral health and mental illness go hand in hand. Behavioral hospitals look at the behaviors that can or have caused extreme mental stress on an individual, taking a holistic approach for patient treatments. Patients’ families and other support groups are traditionally involved to help improve each patient’s wellness and prevent relapse.
Healthcare in Garland Garland is served regionally by the Baylor Scott & White health care system, Methodist Richardson Medical Center, Garland Behavioral Hospital, Perimeter Behavioral Hospital of Dallas, Hope Clinic of Garland, a number of specialty clinics, assisted living facilities, dental practices, urgent care clinics, and a variety of other industry leading health care providers. If you’re looking for a local health care provider, see the last section of the Garland Guide for a list of providers that are active Garland Chamber members.

More and more behavioral hospitals are making appearances in different cities around the United States, two of which are right here in Garland. Located at 2300 Marie Curie Boulevard, Garland Behavioral Hospital is a 72-bed facility that provides mental health treatment for adults, ages 18 and older. Located at 2696 West Walnut Street, Perimeter Behavioral Hospital of Dallas is a 108-bed facility providing treatment for children ages 5 to 12. Perimeter opened in October 2019. Since 2016, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has offered nationwide support for behavioral health centers. Providing behavioral treatments and service to the Garland community is a step toward identifying ways to prevent children’s mental illnesses and improving adult social interactions.

Transportation Options Getting Around in Garland Stretching from northern Dallas County into southern Collin County, Garland, Texas offers the best of what these diverse North Texas regions have to offer. The city is connected to the world through the DFW International and Love Field Airports, both of which are less than 40 minutes away. Garland also has two rail stations of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system, DART bus service and an extensive network of major highways and interstates. Located at the crossing of two key heavy freight lines and both regional and interstate transportation corridors, Garland is a powerful part of the regional economy.
Regional/Interstate Roadways When considering commute times to many major employment areas and local attractions, Garland is a practical choice for residents. Bordered by three major highways, President George Bush Turnpike (190), Lyndon B Johnson Freeway (635) and Interstate 30, residents have quick access to the entire region. In recent years, the NTTA completed the final phase of a project that extends the western PGBT terminus south to Interstate 20 through the city of Grand Prairie, forming a half loop around the city of Dallas. Now, the competitive advantage of Garland’s central location has been further enhanced with the PGBT Widening Project that included the widening of the PGBT from north of Belt Line Road (Irving) to State Highway 78 to four lanes in each direction. Access to the south region of Garland will be greatly enhanced with the Lyndon B Johnson reconstruction project. This project will add continuous frontage roads, an additional free lane and a full reconstruction of the entire freeway built to modern standards. All Garland Arterials will have full access to IH 635. Full reconstruction of the IH 30/IH 635 interchange will also be part of this $1.8 billion dollar megaproject. This project will be complete in 2024 as the contractor has incentives to complete the project on time. Travel on IH 30 will also be improved greatly due to the addition of full frontage roads across Lake Ray
Hubbard. This project will begin in 2023 and will include a scenic walking trail over the lake connecting Garland hike and bike paths to this scenic area.
Heavy Rail Before the Great Depression, the Santa Fe (now Kansas City Southern) and MK&T Railroads (who later merged with Union Pacific) wrote the history of Garland’s business expansion, primarily centered on the distribution of cotton and onions, and telephone/ telegraph services. Heavy rail and passenger rail lines continue to play an important role in Garland’s future development. The development of the Union Pacific Inland Port in Southern Dallas over the next 30 years promises to increase Class I rail traffic throughout the Union Pacific system, including shortline feeders such as the Dallas-Garland-Northeastern Railroad.
Public Transportation Options Garland has two light rail stations linking residents and employees with the region. Located in the heart of two of Garland’s largest employment centers, the Forest/Jupiter and Downtown Light Rail Stations serve more than 3,000 riders each weekday. The City continues to encourage higher intensity residential, retail and employment uses adjacent to the stations for its near and long-term economic growth. Adding further connectivity and convenience, DART’s Blue Line extension connects Downtown Garland with Downtown Rowlett, and the final Orange Line segment links the country’s longest light rail system to the world’s third-busiest airport at the DFW Airport Station. Garland also features an extensive bus service which connects to the surrounding DFW Metroplex. For more information about Dallas Area Rapid Transit and the services available, visit www.dart.org. Patty Granville, the Arts Center’s namesake, has been the director of the center since its opening in 1982. Since then, Mrs. Granville has worked with the city staff and members of the Garland Cultural Arts Commission to fulfill a mission to allocate time and funding to encourage the growth of the cultural arts in Garland. “Patty has been the guiding force in the growth and expansion of the Arts Center,” said Jackie Feagin, the council member who proposed the resolution to rename the Arts Center after Mrs. Granville in 2003. “Cities have consulted with her. She is a teacher and a performer.” Patty was one of the founders of the Garland Summer Musicals (GSM) and has served as Producer of the GSM since its inception in 1983. In 2002, the Garland ISD Fine Arts Division recognized Mrs. Granville by naming an annual high school theatre awards program in her honor. On February 4, 2003, the Garland City Council unanimously voted to rename the Garland Performing Arts Center the Patty Granville Arts Center in her honor.
