Garland M. Taylor received his BA and his MA in Visual & Critical Studies from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago. He minored in sculpture and studied under Preston Jackson in Chicago and Virginio Ferrari in Verona, Italy. Garland’s art explores themes such as the reality of death, the notion of mourning, and the concept of masculinity. He’s gets his message across with installations that employ a variety of mediums such as baseball windings, steel, photo montage, collage, sound, found objects, prose, and video loops. For his current body of sculptural work the artist employs tiny pieces of steel discards from railroad maintenance crews, the construction trades, and the manufacturing industry to make sinuous welded forms that strike a balance between skill and spontaneity. These vibrant new works deal with improving that which has fallen into decline.
