Beginning June 1, the Library.GarlandTX.gov TTU DFW team will be available at the North and SouthLibrary.GarlandTX.gov Garland Branch libraries Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Texas Tech University will provide one-on-one assistance to help prospective students and community members learn all about the college process, including admission transfer credit process, career exploration, and planning and scholarship availability. Young Audiences (Age 6-12) LITTLE ART EXPLORERS (AGES 0-5)

4 p.m. Saturdays, June 4 and July 9 South Garland Branch Library Supports early child development by integrating activities that build motor skills, increase vocabulary, improve symbol recognition and encourage emotional awareness. Focuses on the process of making art rather than the end product. June project: Ocean-themed paper collages. July project: Painting with ice cube watercolors.

SIDEWALK CHALK OBSTACLE COURSE (ALL AGES)

June 4 to Aug. 31 North Garland Branch Library Families can complete a sidewalk chalk obstacle course under the library’s covered portico. The obstacle course, made from chalk, duct tape and chalk spray, is approximately 72 feet long. Participants who complete the course may visit the Children’s Desk inside the library during open hours for a small prize.

SAND & SEA SENSORY PROGRAM (AGES 2-6)

10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18 Hollabaugh Recreation Center Pavilion Children ages 2 through 6 are invited to explore their senses using sand and water tables. Fishing poles, plastic fish and ocean animals, and shovels and buckets will be available to use at the tables.

STEAM LABS (AGES 6-12)

11 a.m. Saturday, June 18 and July 16 North Garland Branch Library Participants will explore science and engineering concepts while completing hands-on STEAM projects. July 5 to 9 North Garland Branch Library Totally Jaw-some Shark Week will consist of shark-related events and activities, such as a shark scavenger hunt and prize drawing, a shark storytime at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, and take-and-make shark origami bookmarks.

UNDER THE SEA FAMILY LITERACY PARTY

2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 16 Walnut Creek Branch Library Children and families can discover ocean-themed books and activities at the Under the Sea Family Literacy Party. Attendees will listen to a story about oceans and sing songs before completing ocean-related activities like folding angelfish origami, playing I Spy a Fish and a shark-themed memory game, and going on a treasure hunt.

10 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 30 Central Library Children and families can celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program with treats, games and outdoor activities.

Families can celebrate the beginning of the Nicholson Memorial Library System’s Summer Reading Program by dropping in to the Summer Reading Kickoff events.

South Garland Branch Library 4845 Broadway Blvd. 972-205-3933 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees can find out whether or not they have what it takes to survive on a deserted island by participating in activities like blowfish bowling, a pirate scavenger hunt, a beanbag toss and more. Central Library 625 Austin St., 972-205-2517 2 p.m. Families can watch the Moana and Maui dancers from the Grace Hula Company perform hula dancing, then take photos with the dancers. Children may also decorate their own Tamatoa crab shell from the "Moana" movie. North Garland Branch Library 3845 N. Garland Ave., 972-205-2804 2:30 to 4 p.m. Kick off summer with a Narwhal and Jelly Whaley Super Party! Attendees can make jellyfish sun catchers, narwhal horns, Narwhal and Jelly buttons, and narwhal origami, and visit the create-your-own-comic and bubble stations. Waffle cookies will be provided, and families can register to win a Narwhal and Jelly book and puppet set.

STEAM CLUB

Each event runs from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and incorporates at least one STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art or math) concept. Learn the science behind optical illusions, then follow step-by-step instructions to create your own drawings.

Explore the history of lighthouses and learn about circuitry before constructing your own 3D lighthouse out of recycled materials. Use an LED bulb, copper tape and a battery to make it light up. You can learn about Morse code too!

Discover the scientific principles of buoyancy by building an origami boat complete with mast and sail. Then compete in a tournament to see whose boat is the fastest.

Find out how wax-resist watercolor paint works by drawing your own design with a white crayon, then completing your artwork with watercolor paint.

Adults will learn about how sea glass is formed then use sea glass beads and wire to create a tree that is also a sun catcher. Registration is required to attend. Adults can build pop-pop boats out of recycled materials. Pop-pop boats use a tea light to heat water in a small boiler that is connected to two straws. The straws run behind the boat into the water, and when the water in the boiler heats up, the straws turn into jets that propel the boat forward. Attendees will not only build their boats, but test them in a small pool once completed. Registration is required. To register, please call 972-205-2803 beginning Thursday, June 30. Seniors (Age 55+) PIANIST SCOTT WILLIS

2 p.m. Thursday, June 16 Central Library Senior citizens can enjoy instrumental versions of classic and contemporary tunes played by pianist Scott Willis. Willis arranges instrumental piano covers that remain faithful to the songs’ original artists while still sounding fresh. His repertoire includes songs from Billy Joel, The Who, John Legend, and Elton John.

JUGGLER DAVID SLICK

2 p.m. Thursday, July 21 Central Library Enjoy juggling and magic from Guinness World Record holder David Slick. Slick’s routines often include the juggling of machetes, knives, eggs, beanbags, rings and even a real bowling ball. He frequently incorporates comedy, magic, unicycling, card tricks and balance stunts into his performances.

2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23 South Garland Branch Library Adult crafters can make sea shell shadow boxes. The boxes will be painted in blue and white to mimic a beach. Crafters may add shells, sand and rope to customize their boxes and add to the nautical theme. Registration is required and begins July 9. Call 972-205-3931 to register.
