Why Recycle

Recycling not only saves landfill space, but it also helps reduce air pollution by preventing items from breaking down in landfills and emitting toxic gases. Recycling also saves energy from producing new products, protects environmental resources, and creates local jobs in our Garland community.

March 2025

Life Beyond the Landfill

When you recycle a glass container it is sent to a Recycing Facility near Dallas, where it is crushed, and cleaned to produce Cullet. This Cullet can be sold in various sizes for manufacturing products like lightbulbs and eyeglasses.

Recycle These!

No Plastic Bags

Sometimes, what's recyclable in one form is not recyclable in another. While hard plastics are acceptable, plastic bags should never be put in your blue cart. Plastic bags damage recycling machinery and can't be recycled. If contamination like plastic bags are identified in your cart, your recycling may be dumped at the landfill. Have loose recyclables like shredded paper? We'll gladly accept them in a paper bag instead!

Don’t be a “Wishcycler”!

Wishcycling is when people place items in their recycling bin hoping they’re recyclable, but not everything belongs in the blue recycling cart! Putting non-recyclable items in the bin causes contamination, turning recycling into trash. Transporting, sorting and disposing of these materials is costly, and many wishcycled items cause operational problems at our recycling facility. Check the Waste Wizard tool at GarlandWasteWizard.com to learn how to properly recycle or dispose of hundreds of items.

Thank you for recycling.
