Preservation Society for

“Friends of the Forest” The Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest is dedicated to protecting and maintaining the forest and preserve in Garland. Spring Creek is a biologically diverse, 230-acre oak forest and prairie with natural and concrete trails, native plants and animals. Join the society for guest speakers, nature walks, special events and monthly work sessions to remove invasive plants, pick up trash and maintain trails. 29th Annual Trout Lily Nature Walk

The Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest will host the Trout Lily Nature Walk from 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Spring Creek Forest Preserve, 1770 Holford Road.

Volunteers will welcome you and send you along the clearly marked trail to the trout lily field and Tom Frey, a regionally acclaimed naturalist. Trout lilies are one of the first plants to flower in the spring. The tiny flowers are only in bloom from about mid-February through mid-March and then disappear until next year. Volunteer naturalists will be at several stations along the trail to tell you about the significance of that area of the preserve. This format allows you to go at your own pace. Walking the full loop takes about 45 minutes and includes both concrete and dirt trails.

Guided Nature Walks

• Special “Start your year right!” walks from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 1 at 4695 Ranger Drive and from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at 1787 Holford. • Bird walks led by a certified birder will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Jan. 15 and 16. Reservations required. Email rcollins20@verizon.net to reserve a spot. • The Fourth Sunday Nature Walk series will meet at 1770 Holford from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 23, March 27 and April 24.

Join regional experts on issues relevant to Spring Creek Preserve from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month through Zoom. • Jan. 4: Matt Grubisich, Garland Parks Director, on preserve issues. • Feb. 1: Tom Frey on the establishment of the preserve. • March 1: Dr. Ignasio Puhana on fossils of Spring Creek. • April 5: Carol Clark on the wildflowers of the preserve.
