Band Together on the Square was awarded the Arts and Humanities Programming Achievement Award. This award honors those departments with an outstanding project or program that promotes cultural art. Band Together on the Square focused on local bands and singer songwriters, setting the stage for music lovers to recognize Garland as a music destination to catch on-the-rise artists. The concert series ran every Friday night, May through September 2022, and converted a vacant lot into a small pocket park in the midst of a legacy construction project Downtown. While creating a unique musical experience in the heart of the city, the series simultaneously encouraged patrons to navigate around construction and support small businesses. Downtown merchants created on-the-go concert meals, boutique specials and cross-promotion events. This successful program was a collaboration between 11 City departments, district businesses and property owners, and local musicians, and ensured the mirror of the community maintained its reflection of creative, artistic and entrepreneurial spirit during a very disorienting time.
Heather Lambert, Holford Recreation Center Supervisor, received the Presidential Award of Honor. This special award is presented by the outgoing President of the Texas Recreation & Park Society to individuals who have supported them during their tenure with the organization and beyond. This year, outgoing President Trent Kelley recognized several individuals who supported him through his goals for the society. Heather has been an active member of the TRAPS North planning committee for more than 20 years and just completed her first term as the North Region Director. During this same ceremony, Heather was inducted to serve a second term as the North Region Director. Congratulations to Heather on receiving this prestigious award.

Dramapalooza, created in 2003, gives adults with various disabilities the opportunity to learn all about musical theater performance and production. Each year a group of 15 to 20 performers embark on a journey to learn lines, songs, dances and more in an intense program culminating in a public performance.
Lory Stewart, a former teacher for the Garland Independent School District, adapts or creates a different musical each year for the group. The performers are exposed to the full cultural arts experience through this class. Productions include costuming, scripts, solos, group musical performances, choreography and teamwork. Each element of this unique program helps to promote independence, confidence and a sense of belonging. Accommodations are made to meet the needs of each performer, which include individuals who are non-verbal, individuals who use wheelchairs and individuals with social anxiety. No part is a small part in Dramapalooza. Every participant is given a chance to shine bright on the stage.
The 2023 performance will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 9, at the Plaza Theatre in Downtown Garland.
