hen the sky turns that specific shade of milky winter gray, the sun sets at 5pm and a deep chill creeps in. Even in South Carolina, hibernation begins to look like a great alternative to suffering through the cold months. Naturally, with inclimate weather, people spend less time outdoors, become less active and prefer a night at home with Netflix to a night out on the town. But, for some people, these reclusive tendencies may be more than just the winter blues.

SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) OR SEASONAL DEPRESSION is a mood disorder that makes people with normal mental health experience depression-like symptoms. Typically, SAD symptoms appear in the fall/winter months but in some cases appears in the spring/summer months. According to NYU Langone Medical Center, up to 25% of the population

may suffer from a mild version of SAD and perhaps 5% experience a full disorder. Unfortunately, there is not a specific medical test that can be performed to determine a diagnosis. Tracking your moods and behaviors and talking to your physician about persisting symptoms is the first step.

HEALTH

Symptoms must be experienced for at least two consecutive years during the same season every year.

CRITERIA FOR TRUE

DIAGNOSIS

There are no other explanations for the mood and behavior changes.

The periods of depression are followed by periods without depression.

OPINION

MOVIES BY JULIA NICHOLSON

The term “coming of age” can be associated with many things: children becoming teenagers, teenagers becoming adults or even adults having self-discoveries and becoming better versions of themselves. Movies are excellent sources of inspiration for people who are struggling through all phases of life and in various stages of growth and maturity. Take a look at nine great movies that are perfect for getting you in the b-day spirit.

SIXTEEN CANDLES The ultimate birthday dilemma – your family forgets your birthday, which for a 16-year-old girl this might be the worst thing that could happen. Andy, the middle child, struggles with an identity crisis as she tries to find her place in both her family and at school. 50/50 This dark comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, focuses on a 27-year-old dealing with his new cancer diagnosis. Throughout his treatment, he deals with a flaky best friend, an overbearing mother and a cheating girlfriend, which changes him from a shy people-pleaser to a determined man who stands up for himself.

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER Freshman year of high school can be pretty tough, especially when you’re painfully shy and have a pretty depressing past. Thankfully, Charlie makes some older friends who teach him about love and friendship. This movie will definitely have you reaching for a box of Kleenex.

YOU MUST

WATCH ON YOUR

BIRTHDAY

DAZED AND CONFUSED This flick takes a close look at the transition from high school to the real world and the tough decisions teenagers must make to find themselves. Add in Matthew McConaughey’s hilarious oneliners and this film is sure to keep you laughing.

MOONRISE KINGDOM This quirky indie work from writer and director Wes Anderson is an instant classic. When two young pen pals fall in love and decide to run away together, their small New England town is turned upside down.

THE SANDLOT If you’re a child of the 90’s and haven’t seen The Sandlot then “you’re killing me Smalls!” This feel-good film centers on Scotty Smalls, the new kid in town who is kind of a dweeb until cool-kid Benny takes him under his wing and teaches him how to play baseball with his group of friends.

ALMOST FAMOUS Imagine going on tour with a rock band in the 70’s. Now imagine you’re fifteen. In this Oscar winning film, William is on assignment for Rolling Stone magazine to write an article about up-and-coming band Stillwater. Along the way he learns all about sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll while falling for one of the band’s groupies, Penny Lane.

THE DESCENDANTS This film is the perfect mix of dark humor and drama. George Clooney plays a lawyer living in Hawaii who discovers his wife has been cheating on him. Throughout the movie, he goes through a range of emotions from sadness to anger to resentment to grief, but he ultimately finds peace as he reconnects with his daughters and begins to see life clearly.

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK When Pat (Bradley Cooper) returns to his parent’s home in Philadelphia after a stint in a mental institution after almost beating his wife’s lover to death, he’s set on getting his life back on track. His plans are derailed when he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a mysterious young widow with a dark past.

NIGHTLIFE

Places for Yo-Pros

Classic Atmosphere

PEARLZ

The OAK TABLE

936 Ger vais Street

1221 Main Street 803-563-5066

This place definitely has a yo-pro feel, if you know what I mean. It’s a little more pricy, but the cocktails are delicious. If you like gourmet seafood, this is the place for you. They also have an upstairs bar area. Pearlz is great for happy hour, and they have a special, late-night menu.

PUBLICK HOUSE

This place is a little more formal and offers excellent dinner and brunch. However, it’s also a great place to stop in for a drink. The Oak Table prides itself on its craft cocktails, so if you’re like me and want something classic that you might not be able to find at a bar in Five Points, The Oak Table is a great spot.

2307 Devine Street

Home-Brew

I recently visited Publick House for trivia and had a great time. The atmosphere is very casual and quiet. They’ve got a pretty good beer selection and delicious bar food. The trivia was awesome. This is a great place to visit with a small group of friends.

HUNTER GATHERER

THE WHIG 1200 Main Street

900 Main Street This place is for the nights you are willing to spend a little more, but I promise it’s worth it. Hunter Gatherer will take you by surprise. From the outside it looks like a quaint little rustic restaurant. But when you walk inside, you’ll be blown away by the high ceilings and unique setup. They’ve got fantastic food (I recommend the mac n’ cheese) and they brew their own beer. Make sure to stop by on a Thursday for jazz night. Maybe drop the hint to your parents next time they’re in town. This is definitely a place you must visit.

Underground Hot Spot

Cheap Nightly Deals Pizza joint 3246 Forest Drive On Tuesday’s nights, this place is my go to. $2 pints and $2 pizza slices. What more could you ask for? There’s plenty of seating, indoor and outdoor, but you’d be amazed how packed it can get. Pizza Joint has televisions scattered around and huge booths that can seat around 10 people. It’s a great place for some dinner and drinks with a group of friends. Underage-friendly.

Looking for that hidden gem of a bar? Some random taxidermy? Well The Whig has all that and more. Great pizza, craft beer and possibly the best bourbon and coke you can find in a 100 mile radius. I don’t know what they do that makes that drink so special, but I hope they keep doing it. All you’ve got to do is walk down what some might consider “sketchy” stairs and open the unmarked door and you’ve found yourself in a one-of-a-kind place. They’ve also got some cool specials like Taco Tuesday, wherein they serve nothing but delicious tacos for your feasting pleasure. You haven’t lived until you’ve spent some time soaking in all that is The Whig.

Mixing Alcohol with Activities

Live Music & Dancing

Clear Your Mind

ARTS & DRAUGHTS

RED DOOR TAVERN

1400 Main St

columbiamuseum.org/ar tsanddraughts

134 1/2 State Street reddoor tavern.net

Coming to Columbia, I had no idea the city had so many unique events. Arts and Draughts is just one, but I love the entire idea and event. Once every few months, the Columbia Museum of Art hosts this event and partners with a relatively local brewery. You can drink the beer while walking around the art museum. They also have a band and tons of activities like a scavenger hunt and figure drawing. Bring out your artistic side and make sure to check out Arts and Draughts.

This place is great for live music. Located in West Columbia, The Red Door Tavern is a very casual scene. They’ve got a great selection of wine and beer, pool and even a pinball league if you’re into that kind of thing. Make sure to check their website because they post about all upcoming shows and events.

BREW AT THE ZOO riverbanks.org/events/brew-atthe -zoo I can’t think of anyone who would say no to an event combining great beer and adorable zoo animals. Here, you’ll get that experience and more. They feature a variety of beer, live music, food and, of course, animals. Make sure to keep up with when the next Brew at the Zoo will be taking place.

Eclectic Crowds

ART BAR 1211 Park Sttreet Located in the vista, marked by year-round Christmas lights, Art Bar is an exciting scene. This place has a real retro feel with a U shape bar and arcade games. They’ve also got a dance floor, lounge area and outdoor seating. I’ve always had a great experience at this bar. The scene is very eclectic, hosting people of all genres. Have your card ready at the entrance.

TIN ROOF

SHERATON ROOFTOP Enjoy a beautiful view of the city while sipping perfect cocktails with your friends. This bar seems to be a bit of a secret for the college crowd, but I’m here to tell you it is one of the best bars in Columbia. In the summer it’s perfect. The weather is cool and you can gaze at Capstone and the Adluh from a new perspective. And in the winter months they’ve got heat lamps strategically placed around the bar. The Sheraton Rooftop is for those chill nights full of great conversation.

1022 Senate Street Here is another great place for music. Last time I went here they even had shagging. Tin Roof is really fun. It has a good mix of people and a nice outdoor area. The drink selection is typical. You’re sure to find your go-to’s and enjoy some music and dancing. Tin Roof has locations in multiple cities so you never have to live without it!

NEWBROOKLANDTAVERN 122 State Street newbrooklandtavern.com This is the place to go for live, local music on a nightly basis. Recently, I saw a concert here and fell in love with the atmosphere. The bar is divided into two sections. In one is the long bar area with seating scattered around. In the other, bands play almost every night. I loved it because I could sit at the bar and still see and hear the music. New Brookland Tavern has all kinds of music from alternative rock to folk to heavy metal to pop. Just check their website to see what’s playing. They feature a lot of local music so go out and show them some support!

Best Beer Selection FLYING SAUCER 931 senate Street Calling all beer connoisseurs – Flying Saucer has an incredible selection. You name the brew, and they’ve got it. And if you’re really dedicated, you can drink all of them (over an extended period of time) and earn yourself a plate on the wall. I’ve been here for trivia night and had a fantastic time. Like Tin Roof, Flying Saucer also has multiple locations. When I go home to Raleigh, I always make an effort to stop by so I don’t get too Columbia-sick.

WORLD OF BEER 902 Ger vais Street World of Beer has endless possibilities when it comes to drinks. You may know it as the place where you had to bring your own food, but food has now been introduced to the menu. Like Flying Saucer, they have hundreds of beers, but WOB seems to have more of a sports bar feel. This is a large franchise so you can find them in nearby states as well.

OPINION

BY ERIN SPENCER DESIGN CASEY KSAU

From the advent of the camera, and since the first photo was captured in 1826 in a backyard in France; people have been fascinated by photography. We take photos for many reasons. We want to preserve a moment, our own moment. We want to show a glimpse, if ever so slight, of the way in which we see the world. We want to allow others to peer through our lens. We want to see something the naked eye cannot. We want to stop time and to allow our eyes the indulgence of exploring further into what we see. Now not only do we see the tree, but we can see the branches and the leaves. We take a picture because we need to say that I was there, that I existed.
