exercise 1: FORM AND MAKING Students
were asked to make a three
different materials.
The

cubes out of
3
cubes were to touch all eight corners
of a cube, but not necessarily complete the six surfaces.
The
cube was to be fully abstract, able to be placed on any one of its surfaces.
Students
tackled design issues and were asked to
select one of the three preliminary cubes to convert into a 6 cube.

the new task of the fourth exer-
cise was to combine two elements as well as use two operations. the objective of creating
5 spaces was
still in place as well as the idea of
having an abstract object with no definite orientation.

goal of this exercise was to introduce three charac-
teristics of architecture and the experience of architectural space: scale, movement, and context.
in the first part of the
exercise students were assigned to one of eight buildings on the
Syracuse University campus. In teams they would draw sections, plans, and perspectival images that would suggest the visual experience of the actual building. In the second part of the assignment, students would transform the object produced in exercise 2.4 to create an architectural model of a scale building, which would then be placed on a site in the final part of the exercise.

exercise 4: CASE STUDY Students
were assinged one of ten pieces of archi-
tecture to study.
Students
were to learn the history of the
building as well as the intentions of its contruction. were to diagram concepts of the building such a spacing, formal structure, and so forth.

shape as well as the designated spaces for living space, studio, and gallery.
exercise 5: A PUBLIC AND PRIVATE STUDIO In
the final exercise of the semester, students were asked
to apply the skilled learned and design a dwelling and studio for an artst.
The
live/work studio included a working space, a
living space, and an exibition space. It was important to consider the conditions of publicness and privacy in their studio designs.

student chose a type of artist
(painter,

dents were also given a site that the building would be located.
the studio space was built to be a part of the gallery when the artist wished for it to be
so. the artist has the option to close of the studio from
the gallery, however the living space is completely private.
