1. Alhambra's new collection Nostalgie features beautiful colours we find in nature: olive greens, purples, burgundy and golds amongst others. Featuring floral patterns, stripes, geometrical patterns - perfect for cocoordinating. 2. Jab Ansteotz's Four Seasons Volume 7 collection visits the British cottage garden for its inspiration to showcase bunches and bunches of simple, colourful flowers. 3. Large geometric patterns provide a dramatic backdrop. Designers Guild's Leopold pattern provides striking hexagonal motifs in daring, bold colours 4. Many designs this year look back to the past with nostalgia and fondness, yet have a contemporary twist. Yukari Sweeney Design has launched Manor House which looks back to the ballrooms and grand sitting rooms of manor houses but with a quirky twist. 5. Pink perfection. Farrow & Ball’s Rosslyn wallpaper, ₏102 per 10m roll.
As the days and nights become colder, the theme for winter is to make ourselves as comfortable as possible within our homes, with an emphasis on homely, natural fibres and cosy cocooning. We look back to simple ways of life in the past: one example is the mountain communities of countries such as Tibet and Mongolia as we vie to comfort ourselves in cosy environments, almost hibernating from the cold snowy exterior. The symbols and motifs from the Mongolian and Tibetan patterns include Ikat which is also geometric in style, and is included in Daniel Croyle’s new collection. Geometric designs are still very fashionable, many of the geometric patterns hark back to large classical shapes and motifs, yet the strong colours and metallics add a very contemporary edge. Stripes, octagons, trellis and checks feature widely. There is also a return to herringbone and houndstooth designs in fabrics. As we are in the midst of a global recession, interior design looks back to another difficult decade, that of the 1940s when there were also economic difficulties, a degree of self-sufficiency, making the most of what you had and people trying to be practical and creative. There is also a return to traditional fabrics as woollens and linens are extremely popular this season -

again reassuring, homely and warming. The emphasis is on snuggling up with woollen cushions and blankets, keeping warm over the winter months. Flora and Fauna Birds, butterflies and animals have been prevalent within interior trends for the last year or so and this theme continues but with a difference. With a move away from eyecatching leopard and zebra prints to more subtle ocelot designs and crocodile skin, the emphasis is also on texture. On the other hand, patterns featuring birds have become even more striking, as demonstrated by Nina Campbell’s Swan Lake fabric and wallpaper featuring exquisite swans surrounded by peaceful weeping willows. Floral designs are still extremely popular - large, small, posies, climbing, vintage, roses, daisies, carnations, leaves, ferns, wildflowers - any type of floral pattern you can imagine. Many of the colours are still muted and vintage, looking back with nostalgia to a bygone age but there are more metallic highlights within the floral designs. A look that I believe will become more prevalent with the 2010 spring collections is that of bunches and bunches of flowers - the busier the better! Jab Ansteotz’s Four Seasons Volume 7 collections encapsulates this theme perfectly as it is inspired by the English country garden and most of the fabrics feature a plethora of

brightly coloured flowers. Why will this look become more popular? Well, the fresh, bright appearance of the flowers suggests fresh green shoots, new blooms, new growth and symbolises new optimism and hope as we celebrate the beauty of nature and move into 2010, looking forward to success in the spring rather than economic gloom. It is about making us feel good about ourselves and bringing the best and most positive of the outside environment into our homes.

From cherry blossom to bamboo and stylised fans on beautiful linens and silks, we can bring the exotic and the orient into our homes without having to travel afar. Zoffany’s Trade Routes wallpaper suggests a sense of exploration and adventure as it looks back to a bygone age yet one can still capture the sense of apprehension and excitement of heading off into the sunset - definitely providing an exotic touch to a design scheme. Wallpapers Wallpaper is here to stay. Gone is the tendency to use wallpaper on one wall, particularly using the fireplace wall as your feature wall. The trend now is to wallpaper all four walls. Many of the wallpaper collections now include a plain, yet slightly textured wallpaper which co-ordinates perfectly with a patterned design - this works perfectly if the pattern is too large to use on all four walls within 10. Sumptuous silk! Times Square from Casamance is a mix of embroidered silks inspired by Art Nouveau, neoclassical arabesques and graphic stripes. Pure stylishness in silk and velvet with eccentric and chic touches. 11. Designers Guild's Darly indigo wallpaper is the ultimate in dramatic floral trails featuring flowing acanthus leaves, lilies and roses with a soft metallic finish. 12. Oriental glitz and glamour abounds in the Duquette fabric line, one of Jim Thompson’s sumptuous silks. The screen is covered in Golden Sunburst, a silk jacquard weave with a large scale sunburst motif, available in red lacquer and gold and blue, £124 per metre. a room. Another alternative is to use panelling. Simply use architrave or decorative wooden strips to create a panel and wallpaper within still striking, different, yet extremely costeffective. Wallpaper is becoming more textured too flock wallpaper is popular once again but texture is being added in other ways, such as a basket weave, embroidery or padded effect - all about embracing and cosseting us within our interiors. Whisper Whisper is a new theme for the coming season. The effect is to create a sense of space, air, lightness and wonderment; to generate a wispy, dreamlike atmosphere resembling a frosted, milky or smoky palette, suggesting the fabric is barely there. Several beautiful voiles have been launched this season, many with intricate detailing, subtle stripes or delicate floral patterns. Minimalism is long gone and now is the time for warmth, cosiness and comfort but in a light and subtle manner. By this, I mean it is about using different fabrics and textures in the same tones. Large florals & texture are much in vogue so Zoffany's Persian Tulip flock wallpaper fits the bill being very tactile and bold. Zoffany's Ocelot fabric (on armchair) showcases the move to more subtle animal prints.

Country Garden collection demonstrates this perfectly as elegant crewel work on a linen background creates a feeling of lightness and space yet with the tactile reassurance of texture and a traditional stitching effect. Layers can also be created with sheer voiles, similarly coloured fabrics. Discreet buttoning on chairs, sofas and cushions is also popular and effective whereby the buttons are covered in the same fabric as the upholstery. Interior design offers us reassurance and comfort this winter with its rounded shapes, natural fibres, traditional designs and patterns and it will propel us into the new year with the optimism of fresh blooms. ❊
