October 2nd, 2018 Re: Garrett McGill, Letter of Reference To Whom it May Concern:

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Garrett McGill. I got to know and work with Garrett recently during the first year of his undergraduate degree at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture, and interviewed him for his acceptance into the program. I have no hesitation to say that he stood out among his peers – he is talented, inquisitive, dedicated and enthusiastic about the work he pursues. Garrett has a bright presence in his class – he is hard working, committed in his process, explorative in his work, a strong designer and a great communicator. He participates in all ways within his class – in discussions with professors, his peers, his critiques and during reviews. He approaches design with a genuine passion – he holds himself to very high standards for what he produces, yet is open minded to criticism, and seeks ways to explore, expand and challenge himself to better his work and his own education in the practice. The maturity in which Garrett approaches his work, with an honest craft that is conscious and careful, is rare to find at such a young age. Garrett is a clearly engaged student, in his own work and that of others. Garrett has a broad skill set that brings great value to his architectural studies at school – he is talented in both the technical and digital realms of design, and also has a tremendous adeptness to shop work and fabrication. During his application interview to the School of Architecture, Garrett included in his portfolio industrial design studies ad projects he had done on his own time – studying and learning about the materials, the structural integrity of wood, joinery and detailing. It is clear he has capable hands, that he is aware as a designer, and gives attention to all scales of design, spatial qualities and fabrication. He is a true enthusiast for any type of educational environment. I am consistently impressed with his work and his attitude towards learning. Garrett is filled with passion, and he stands out among many students I have taught at the University of Waterloo. I would say that Garrett has honest fun with his work and brings an atmosphere of fun to everyone around him. He is interested, engaged and talented, and remarkably professional. He is a very worthy candidate for any job, and I have no doubt he would be a great addition to your office. I hope you will you will consider his application. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

01 S A L V A G E 1B Design Studio Supervised by Donald McKay Winter 2018 In collaboration with Aurora Chi, Paulina Erchova & Silja Walenius - Featured in ‘questioning the ___’ UWSA Student Project Review Exhibition 2018 The target was a home that could be prefabricated, adaptable over time, capable of reconfiguration or addition, and accommodate two unrelated people. The design took into consideration turning radius’, open lowers and a curb-less shower, to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. With bedrooms located at opposite ends separated by a communal great room, the floor plan was streamlined to allow effortless movement through the space. The structure is raised two meters above the ground for minimal disruption to the natural drainage pattern of the existing site.

1A Design studio Fall 2017 Advisor: Rick Andrighetti To aid in the lack of a formal residence for Waterloo Architecture students, this four bedroom home was once an empty laneway, ending with the Galt flood wall. A split level design allows the floor of the eat-in kitchen and large deck to align with the height of the flood wall for an unobstructed view across the river. The entrance is located at the centre of the long narrow lot, to push circulation outdoors allowing for more efficient use of interior space. The typical “backyard” was eliminated in favour of this outdoor walkway which is sheltered from above with an overhang. At the entrance, the walk begins to slope downward half a level, to arrive at a sunken garden and meditation space.

03 T O T E M Canadian Institute of Steel Construction design competition Winter 2018 Advisor: Terri Meyer Boake In collaboration with Daniel Beg The CISC posed a challenge to explore the linkage of disparate elements, and what it means to “link” people together through architectural design. Visitors to Kirkjufjara must be made aware of the potential dangers present at the beach. The roaring waves of Iceland’s southernmost coast are particularly violent, often reaching further up the beach than many would expect, these are called sneaker-waves. TOTEM acts as a safe medium of transport to the incredible vista. Visitors descend through the landscape into a hallway clad in black hot rolled steel. The steel grate floor, angled slightly downward, urges one forwards and allows for water drainage toward the sea. Once at the end, one passes the created waterfall underfoot and is finally connected to cliff, sky, and ocean.

04 O A S I S 1B Environmental Design Supervised by Terri Mayier Boake Winter 2018 In collaboration with Daniel Beg Perched on the water’s edge of the Meghna River downstream from Dhaka, this water research station stands to aid in the crisis Bangladesh faces. The station, built in the South-Asian vernacular of bamboo and timber, sits six meters above the summer ood level for protection from yearly monsoon waters. Designed to be passively cooled, the structure has low thermal mass and beneďŹ ts from prevailing winds with a large parasol roof for maximum ventilation. Corrugated steel roof decking directs rainwater into a central cistern. Photovoltaics provide copious amounts of electricity for mechanical equipment and a solar hot water system.

05 THE IDLER’S INSTITUTE 1B Design Studio Advisor: Donald McKay Winter 2018 Located in the Junction, Toronto (Dundas st. West & Annette st.) one must enter the library from the rear. A colonnade connects both the north and south corners of the lot, acting as an extension of the sidewalk. The building mass is pulled back where the colonnade meets the street to create small plazas, which are connected with a large garden at the rear of the lot. RIGHT: The community kitchen studio provides lessons in healthy eating and cooking, and functions as a cafe when not in use. Flexible cafe seating fills the atrium, which extends outdoors through the colonnade and into the garden with additional seating along each raised garden bed. A co-working space occupies the top floor for individuals to conduct research, design, or business activities. This shared space potentially allows informal collaborative interactions to occur.

To uncover how these were achieved through space, light and matter. Then to consider how these properties might be captured in a connected interior architectural assemblage. RIGHT from top down: 1.
