Design/Build Project
Pavilion and Patio Renovations
for the Methodist Mission Home’s Southwest Center for Higher Independence (SCHI)
Volunteer Initiative is a group of architecture students devoted to using their gifts and talents to serve the community. The team took root when Garrett Brown started volunteering at the Methodist Mission Home (MMH) and witnessed firsthand the authenticity and influence propelling the ministry. This in turn inspired Garrett to consider the possibility of fusing his faith pursuit of “reading, learning, and serving” with his passion for design on the MMH campus. Garrett knew he needed a team to execute his architectural aspirations, so he began piecing together a group of exceptional individuals in the spring of 2010. Not long after, Benjamin Rosas, Daiki Tsutsumi, and Aldo Vega eagerly committed to the proposal, and thus, Volunteer Initiative was set into motion. The team united around the concept of a pavilion and site renovations at the Methodist Mission Home’s Southwest Center of Higher Independence (SCHI), a facility committed to offering young adults with disabilities a transitional education to prepare them for independent living (www.mmhome.org/schi). The structure’s shape was intended to mirror God’s hands as the young adults with disabilities literally “rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). The site plans also include an art display area that will showcase painted stones made by SCHI students. Ultimately, Volunteer Initiative hopes the pavilion will be a gathering space that invites meaningful community-building opportunities for everyone at the Methodist Mission Home.

The Enrichment of the Patio will encourage the young adults with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors and participate in social activities such as barbecuing, pool parties, and classes. The accessible pavilion, surrounding fence, and colorful foliage have been strategically placed to create an inviting atmosphere.
Brick by Brick Our goal is to raise $10,000. Brick by Brick is an engraving program we have created to raise the funds necessary to bring this project to fruition. Each brick installed in the pavilion floor can be purchased for sixty dollars and will be exclusively inscribed with the buyer’s text (3 lines, 16 characters per line). Those who would like to spend twenty dollars have the opportunity to share a brick with two other donors (1 line, 16 characters). Supporters who wish to remain anonymous can give money without etching. With your help, the Methodist Mission Home Pavilion will literally be built one brick at a time.
Lend a Hand If you are looking for alternative ways to support the project, we will need skilled hands to help: ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦
Dig post holes Install fence panels Demolish existing concrete Pour new concrete Till and prepare for brick instillation Garden and plant designated areas
We are looking to borrow construction tools and equipment for the duration of the building process. In-kind donations of products and materials suitable for the project are also greatly appreciated.
