2015 Steelcase NEXT Competition

collision The concept of casual collisions provides inspiration in the form of serendipitous encounters between Nexters. It is through these unplanned encounters that moments of creativity, collaboration, and friendship is sparked. Work areas are strategically placed to encourage Nexters to bump into each other throughout their day. The entry on the ground level forces all Nexters to travel through the lower level before making their way upstairs to work. Similarly, the work cafĂŠ and restrooms are located on the ground level, requiring Nexters to walk downstairs to visit either space. This is done to ensure Nexters will be given multiple opportunities to bump into each other and spark conversation. Collision in the Next office is constructive rather than destructive. Where ceilings or walls collide, they create layers over one another and evolve into a dynamic space. This visual strategy is similar to how casual collisions occur between Nexters. By bumping into one another, Nexters are given the opportunity to collaborate and share ideas. This eventually leads to friendships between Nexters and a stronger, more dynamic workplace culture. Translucency is another important factor in the Next office. It is incorporated into the design with wall systems and furniture choices that provide the Nexters privacy, but not isolation. V.I.A. walls were used in private offices and project rooms as a means to create privacy for the user, but still allow them to be connected to the outside office. Through the implementation of these design decisions, Nexters are provided with an ample number of creative workspaces.

design concept

creative collaboration

living on video

• to leverage creativity, you must collaborate • distributed collaboration offers solutions but challenges as well • trust is required for successful collaboration • provide not only collaborative spaces, but also spaces for individual, focus work • collaborative areas should be close, but not distracting to others

• global work = distributed teams • provide different spaces that meet the needs of the activities occurring in them • providing a “palette of presence” or different spaces where virtual work and physical work takes place • create a destination that is user adaptable

culture matters

economics of wellbeing

• space shapes behavior, behavior turns into culture • deciding on the culture of the company and embracing it with design decisions to amplify it • bringing employees together to create a office environment that they want to go to, rather than have to go to. • a strong culture leads to greater trust and collaboration as well as happier employees

• the better someone feels physically or mentally, the better work they will produce • give employees choice in how and where they chose to work • wellbeing helps with the retention of good employees • avoiding cognitive overload for employees by giving them places to get away and recharge

*The four design themes are taken from Future Focused in the Steelcase360 magazine.
