6 person team project // fall 2014 sponsored by herman miller - nemschoff Continuum is a modular, social lounge unit centered around allowing patients access intravenous chemotherapy in a residential setting. With a focus on modularity, mobility, and social interaction, it provides chemo patients a more comfortable and convenient alternative than treatments in a clinical setting.
05
process inital form development
Modularity Creating a piece of furniture that fits into a variety of residential settings was a challenge that quickly determined how large the piece could be and the number of configurations it could transform into. We settled on a modular system that includes a treatment lounger, guest chair, coffee table, and side table. This allows users a large number of configurations possible to fit into both small and large spaces. The unit can also be arranged in a linear or L-shape as well as accommodate for both left and right handed IV locations. Mobility Due to intravenous chemo treatments potentially lasting an upwards of eight hours, it was determined that mobility of the patient during this process be allowed. To address this, our group created a custom, mobile chemo pump that is housed in the side rest of the lounger. When at patient needs to leave the lounger, they simply release the pump and bring it with them. An external battery will allow the unit to be outside of the lounger for up to 30 minutes.
07
model making creating a full scale prototype
Social Interaction Research showed that social interaction can alleviate patient stress and provide a greater sense of comfort. The lounger plays into this by creating multiple zones where interaction can occur. We defined three different levels of communication that needed to be present in order to provide a range of choices to fit each patient. These levels include: near, immediate, and intimate. The guest side chair provides a family member or friend a space to be nearby during the patient’s treatment. Oriented towards the patient, the chair allows visual connection and improves verbal communication. It is a separate seat from the loungers and therefore does not intrude on the patient’s private space. The lounger includes a backrest near the end of the unit to allow an acquaintance the ability to be seated immediately next to the patient. Finally, a pull out bench located underneath the patient doubles as a side table or bench for intimate patient interaction. This could be utilized by a parent or spouse for intimate conversation or by a caregiver to take vitals or apply a treatment.
continuum final renderings
The digital modeling of the unit was done with Rhinoceros 3D and rendered with Vray for Rhino. In addition to digital renderings, a full scale prototype was created from a wooden frame veneered in foam core. Cushions were made of insulation foam and covered in fabric.

BEDSIDE TABLE summer 2015 Bedside Table is a minimal piece inspired by Dieter Ram’s 620 chair. Dieter’s ‘10 Principles of Good Design’ were influential in the design decisions of this piece. It can be assembled in 10 minutes or less and includes the use of solid wood and specialized hardware to create a premium, yet durable appearance. Hard edges were rounded out to provide a softer overall appearance and decrease the possibility of chipped edges. Technology was incorporated into the piece via an embedded wireless charger located on the top of the table. Removing the need for charging cables allows the simplicity of the piece to not be ruined by a mess of cable.

organic bird food
fall 2015 Aviado is an organic bird food company with plans to expand into a new corporate office space. The concept behind the new office design was inspired by the company’s deep roots in the bird food industry and their family culture mentality. The different zones of social interaction between birds became the concept behind this design. Allowing employees access to window views and natural light was important in achieving equality throughout the company and increasing productivity. Collaboration was heavily encouraged by providing a variety of spaces that allows group interaction. Wood was used heavily in order to create a warmer and more inviting workspaces.

process intial form development
Drawing inspiration from the hub of interaction in a home, the kitchen, a large and informal break room is the distinguishing feature of the office. Because Aviado is also a pet friendly company, large areas of space were left open for employees and pets to play together. Resistant carpet tiles were chosen to account for any accidents that the pets may incur. The large central circulation is the link between all spaces. It also serves to provide a spatial barrier between different departments without creating visual barriers. This circulation is further emphasized by overhead ceiling plans and pendant lighting. A wide variety of meeting spaces are provided to employees for various needs. For larger and more formal meetings, the board room can be used. Spaces that seat 4-8 are provided for small group meetings or brainstorming sessions. If an employee needs a quieter, more intimate place to work or meet with another coworker, small alcoves are located near workstations for more private moments.

GOLFEDGE 3 person team project // spring 2015 GolfEdge is a combination retail/restaurant experience that provides customers with a unique shopping and dining experience. Inspired by Topgolf, a large central atrium is dedicated to hitting simulators and a putting green where customers and guests can use the products. While shoppers benefit from trying equipment before purchasing, restaurant diners on the second floor are entertained by the action below. Similarly, the open atrium allows fragrances to waft into the retail area for shoppers to smell, potentially drawing them up to eat.
process inital form development
Creating a dynamic atrium space became the main priority during initial form development. The space needed to be eye catching but couldn’t block views at the same time. It took many iterations before we settled on a custom column that pierced through the second floor plate and continued to the ceiling. The columns were inspired by the hosel of putters. This connection became abstracted and enlarged to create a column that also doubles as a display for merchandise. Large design decisions were also reflected in the littlest details. Custom merchandise displays and restaurant seating were designed in order to keep the design languages similar between floors. Large graphics and vertical signage is used to differentiate spaces and guide customers around the store. A custom logo and branding were also designed to fit the personality of the GolfEdge brand.

summer 2015 Summer 2015 I was fortunate enough to be able to study at UAL Central Saint Martins in London, England. Taking advantage of the wide range of courses available, I chose to take a graphic design course. It was through this course that these projects were developed and executed. The first is a satirical poster series designed to poke fun at the nicknames that Londoner’s have given their skyscrapers. After visiting and sketching each skyscraper, Adobe Illustrator was used to complete the colorful renderings. While up against very stiff competition from other students, these posters were voted as the best use of illustration to convey an idea.

hidden london explosion fold book with illustrations
Another project that I worked on was entitled ‘Hidden London’. It involved researching or seeking out a part of or story within London that may not be well know to the general public. Drawing inspiration from the Elgin Marble exhibit in the British History Muesuem, I chose to tell the story of the fight for possession of the Elgin Marbles between Great Britain and Greece. The explosion fold format was chosen to help convey the idea of a battle and the two opposing sides. When unfolded, the story of the marbles is told in the middle while either end of the book is dedicated to a country and the reasons they should own the marbles.

Lord Elgin was sold the marbles fairly. Elgin & Britain were protecting the marbles. Monuments such as these belong to the world.
Much to dismay of Greece, the marbles have been housed in the British Museum since.
