The Elinor Meugniot Collection This collection represents the heart of over 40 years of passionate pursuit. Most importantly, each piece was loved with a magical feeling of importance as each object had a heart of it’s own to feel the importance of it’s value and worth. Elinor and Dick, her loving husband and constant companion started their lifetime journey with love for early stoneware. After amassing a large collection of Old Sleepy Eye pottery, Elinor authored the book titled “Old Sleepy Eye”, published in 1973, a book which to this day is being used as the ultimate reference book for collectors of this pottery. Since this time they have acquired a wonderful unique collection of rare pieces of early Americana while imparting their knowledge and appreciation of the finest pieces. In their travels they met and established deep friendships with many dealers from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New England. Elinor opened Elinor’s WoodnWares in historic Valley Junction in Des Moines, Iowa. Her passion for early quality woodnware pieces and painted furniture led to a successful business that thrived for 32 years. She educated many and brought joy and love to all who entered her doors with unique authentic objects destined for loving new homes. Their travels out east were numerous, approximately 10 trips per year for over 30 years to keep up with her growing clientele’s desire for the rarest and nicest antiques. Collectors in the midwest felt very fortunate to have a chance at something beautiful and special just by walking through her door, just as she had walked through the doors of dozens of shops, shows, and sales to bring back the very best and offer it at fair prices. Her love for rare rocking horses, stoneware, objects with hearts, rare treenware, and authentic painted furniture not only allowed her to amass her own premiere collection but also served to allow many others to establish large and wonderful collections of their own, one wonderful piece at a time. Just recently Elinor and Dick have chosen to part with their collection and passion of a lifetime, as health issues arise. She now longs to ensure that each of her beloved pieces finds a new home in which it will be loved and appreciated as much as it was in Elinor and Dick’s beautiful country home. She would often say “Buy only what you love”, which is exactly what makes this a “very passionate collection”.
