Spring Cleaning -

it’s (not) all Greek to me!

It's that time of year...as the sun starts shining, birds start chirping and the grass gets greener, thoughts turn toward baseball and hotdogs. For most of us, it's also time for spring cleaning: the bi-annual swap of sweaters and shorts, and the purge that goes along with it. Set your alarm clocks. It's almost garage sale season! At Garth's, it means that our free, walk-in appraisal days are busier than ever, and we love it. Anyone related to the art and antiques business who denies the thrill of the (treasure) hunt is either lying or just plain numb. On those days, we live vicariously through the clients who come, towing boxes, anxiously anticipating any information related to value hopeful that they have unearthed something significant. After all, converting this "trash" to "treasure" means a little extra cash - to throw at debt, or to stash for a rainy day. Some of our favorite walk-in appraisal day stories: ~ a bronze Buddha, having sat on a shelf for 30 years, travels to Garth's in the trunk of a car, wrapped in old towels; later creates a buzz on the world stage, and crosses the block for nearly $40,000; ~ an engagement ring and matching earrings are converted to capital for a business start-up for a mere $230,000 when auction fever takes hold of two eager bidders; ~ on a more approachable level: a Rookwood studio piece, purchased for $2 at a garage sale, sells for more than $1500; ~ a Winchester trade sign, after coming just in the nick of time to our October walk-in appraisal day, hammers for nearly $15,000 in our recent fall Firearms Auction. (Sometimes proximity or volume prohibit clients from using our walk-in appraisal day. If this applies to you, we also offer free virtual appraisals. Or, for those nagging insurance agents who like to have updated information for your fine arts policies, Garth's appraisers can evaluate your collection and prepare a formal written report. Spring cleaning is not just for streak-free windows, but also for worry-free living.)

RARE DECORATED BLANKET CHEST Family Heirloom...Sold for $38,188

Again, we don't all have a five or six-figure treasure hiding in our drawers, but undoubtedly there is a little extra cash sitting on the shelves and in the closets at home - probably where you're least expecting. Take Grandma's sterling silver or Art Deco gold brooch. As a result of any number of economic issues, precious metal values have risen dramatically, and Grandma's bling has risen right along with it. Want to talk politics? Whether you are for or against gun control, you can't argue the effect all this talk has had on Uncle Herk's gun collection. Ever heard the expression cash is king? I recently read an article titled, "The top 10 things Greece can sell to pay off its debt". Silly, right? Maybe not. Some could say that it is more silly to let value sit idle while debt accumulates - or, while other investment opportunities await. As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure...wondering how to value it? Give us a call or send us an email with an image and some pertinent details of your "find". We're thrilled to help! Cheers and Happy Spring Jeff & Amelia Jeffers
