Dear Friends, You may have read about recent developments at Garth’s in the August issue of Maine Antique Digest. If you missed it, MAD reported on the proposed rezoning (by a developer and the landowner) of part of the Garth’s property to accommodate a gas station at the corner of Stratford Road and US 23 - currently the portion of the land utilized for Eclectic Auctions. While a hot-button issue in our local area, a response by the Garth’s community would likely have more to do with the environmental impact of fuel storage tanks than the demolition of a metal pole building; understandably so. Unfortunately, the rezoning and development of that small parcel impacts the use of the Federal home and historic bank barn just to the north – the buildings that, together, have created the quintessential auction experience at Garth’s.

Garth’s house and barn today....

So, it is with both disappointment, and yet simultaneously some very real excitement, that we share with you our plan to relocate the company in 2010 at the end of our lease. Although it is a bit too soon to release the new address, as we plan our next facility you should know that we pledge to: 1. maintain a Delaware, Ohio address (not as important when you are bidding by phone, via the internet, or perhaps driving to town for an auction, but you can bet that a dozen or so folks who drive here to work everyday appreciate the commitment to our zip code). 2. remain true to the philosophies regarding historic preservation that most, if not all, of you share. 3. continue to “walk-the-talk” as we “speak” to both a new and old audience about the benefits of studying, collecting and decorating with antiques to a green lifestyle. It feels a bit ironic to utilize an Eclectic flyer to talk about a location change for the Garth’s family. After all, “the gallery” is , from a historical perspective, clearly the least significant structure here. But for you, and for us, the Garth’s property has been not only a landmark along a busy highway, but also a scenic backdrop where friendships were formed and memories made. We welcome your recollections about the Garth’s property – by phone, email, snail-mail or in person. On the solid foundation of our traditions and collective history, we look forward to building new memories in a new, yet historic, facility. Stay tuned as we release more information about this exciting, dynamic time at Garth’s!

A circa 1900 photo of the historic, 1840’s bank barn from Chatfield, Ohio that we plan to reconstruct at our new location.

Warm regards, Jeff & Amelia Jeffers

GARTH’S IS ALWAYS ACCEPTING QUALITY CONSIGNMENTS.

Call early to reserve space for the fall & winter auctions, including the Labor Day and Thanksgiving Weekend sales, the latter featuring the Kennedy family photographs and other presidential material.

Not many people can declare they held a job for nearly five decades, but the family of renowned Kennedy photographer, the late Robert Davidoff, can say with pride that Davidoff was the photographer “in residence” for the Kennedy family in Palm Beach for almost 50 years. Davidoff’s family waited until four years after his death to release a book, The Kennedy Family Album, in September 2008. Now, Babe Davidoff, widow of the photographer, has chosen, for the sale of the original photography used to create the book plus additional images not included in the publication and heretofore unseen by the general public, an auction house similarly dedicated to its own customers for over five decades. Garth’s Auctions is proud to announce that in the fall of 2009, it will present over 200 photographs which captured three generations of the Kennedy family while at the “Winter White House” during President John F. Kennedy’s administration through the eventual sale of the Palm Beach home. A freelance photographer, Davidoff first photographed then President-elect John F. Kennedy along side President Herbert Hoover and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy during a party for Hoover in Palm Beach. However, it wasn’t until Davidoff later met Rose Kennedy that he was invited by the matriarch to become a true family intimate capturing photos destined to be part of the families’ personal archives. Garth’s will also feature other presidential material of note in this landmark sale with more information to follow in the coming months. For information on consigning your piece of historic presidential memorabilia, contact Jeff Jeffers or Andrew Richmond at 740.362.4771 or via email at info@garths.com.
