...the kids are back in school, a quick trip to the grocery reminds me that Halloween is frightfully close, and Thanksgiving and the holidays will be here before we know it (at least the retailers would like for us to feel that way). It's also that time of year, when we are reminded to get out and vote, with popular media highlighting all things political. All the commercials, political messages and debates have made me think: what would happen if we rallied the antiques industry around a political campaign (of sorts)? A quick brainstorming session here at Garth's generated a few slogans. We aren't the only ones looking for a way to hook more folks on the benefits of buying antiques, art and collectibles. One of our favorite messages ("Antiques are green!") has found great favor within the trade, but has yet to catch the larger wave of mainstream America. While a stronger voice for the industry as a whole would certainly be helpful to the cause, we maintain that the history of the American antiques market has been based in a grass roots effort - and, although the methods of communication have changed and become more technology-based, the industry is destined to grow and prosper through a successful return to those grass roots. In that vein, we invite you to "Be a Collector & Bring a Collector". Introduce some friends to the idea of buying antiques by: passing along your trade papers and magazines after you have read them; bringing them to an auction or antique show (a cheap alternative to a day at the mall or going out to a pricey dinner); and showering them with propaganda - articles abound on the environmental and economic benefits of buying antique and vintage.
This fall, we're adding a little fuel to your arsenal: for a limited time (and through the holidays), we are offering a BOGO deal on our catalog subscriptions. Here's how it works: buy a catalog subscription for yourself, get one free to give to a friend or relative who you think might be interested. Prefer to stay online? Give both subscriptions away, and continue to receive our updates via email.
Whatever the approach, rejuvenating the market is in everyone's best interest. But, keep in mind - no one's going to want to join us if we all seem like a bunch of worry warts and complainers. Keep it simple and keep it fun:
Cheers, Amelia & Jeff Jeffers

“(The client’s) decision to consign quality period pieces to Garth's was a wise one. A New York City or New England auction house probably wouldn't have gotten a penny more for the majority of pieces, and the Ohio furniture and coverlets definitely wouldn't have brought as much as they did here." ~ David Hewett, as reported in Maine Antique Digest
It’s easy to read between the lines. Call us to find out why Garth's is the best choice for a no-nonsense, straightforward consignment experience.
