What is Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, although the greatest known risk factor is increasing age. The majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer’s (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s. Half of all Americans have it by age 85! Preventing Alzheimer’s Prevention. We can prevent Alzheimer’s Disease; you don’t need drugs. The solution doesn’t start with your doctor, it starts with you. We should avoid heavy metals from fish, cookware or supplements. Heavy metals are bad news for our brains. A very short video of Neal Barnard, M.D.: Watch this short video by Michael Gerber, M. D. Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease with Diet “Alzheimer’s disease isn’t a natural part of aging, by staying active and moving plant-based foods to the center of our plates, we have a fair shot at rewriting our genetic code for this heartwrenching , and costly, disease.” Neal Barnard, M. D.

Dietary Guidelines for Alzheimer’s Prevention

Alzheimer’s Disease International predicts Alzheimer’s rates will triple worldwide by 2050. The Alzheimer’s Association predicts long-term care costs start at $41,000 per year. Minimize your intake of saturated fats and trans fats. Eat Whole food, plant-based foods. Consume 15 milligrams of vitamin E, from foods, each day. Avoid vitamins with iron and copper. Choose aluminum-free products. Exercise for 120 minutes each week.

Alzheimer’s prevention Why spend $trillions on failed drug trials when we could invest aportion of these funds in educational programs to help people learn about foods that are now clinically proven to be more effective in fighting this global epidemic? “Some of the most compelling evidence of the effects of meat and dairy foods arises when we stop eating them … Switching to a whole-food, plant-based diet with little or no added salt, sugar and fat, produces astounding health benefits. This dietary lifestyle can prevent and even reverse 70% to 80% of existing, symptomatic disease, with an equivalent savings in health-care costs for those who comply.” — T. Colin Campbell, professor emeritus of nutritional sciences at Cornell University and co-author of The China Study. Reversing Alzheimer’s

Making dramatic lifestyle changes, avoiding simple carbs, gluten and processed foods may help in reversing this disease. Taking yoga and meditating, Take melatonin, get adequate sleep, incorporate vitamin B-12, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D-3 seems to help reverse cognitive decline. Exercise, optimizing the diet with plant-based foods, omitting inflammatory foods, increasing anti-inflammatory foods, increase low glycemic foods and low glycemic load foods. Optimize sleep to 8 hours per night. Optimize anti-oxidants. Stimulate the brain by learning something new, such as a new language. Reduce simple carbs. Eat whole unrefined carbohydrates. fast 12 hours at night. Take turmeric daily. From USF Health at the University of South Florida, Tampa:

Marijuana compound may offer treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, USF preclinical study finds Extremely low levels of the compound in marijuana known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, may slow or halt the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. “THC is known to be a potent antioxidant with neuroprotective properties, but this is the first report that the compound directly affects Alzheimer’s pathology by decreasing amyloid beta levels, inhibiting its aggregation, and enhancing mitochondrial function,” said study lead author Chuanhai Cao, PhD and a neuroscientist at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute and the USF College of Pharmacy. “Decreased levels of amyloid beta means less aggregation, which may protect against the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Since THC is a natural and relatively safe amyloid inhibitor, THC or its analogs may help us develop an effective treatment in the future.” “While we are still far from a consensus, this study indicates that THC and THC-related compounds may be of therapeutic value in Alzheimer’s disease,” Nabar said. “Are we advocating that people use illicit drugs to prevent the disease? No. It’s important to keep in mind that just because a drug may be effective doesn’t mean it can be safely used by anyone. However, these findings may lead to the development of related compounds that are safe, legal, and useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.” I keep running across this info from a UCLA study of a non-drug treatment. UCLA study: Non-drug treatment may reverse Alzheimer’s Here is more on this study: Memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s reversed for first time The study is the first to suggest that memory loss in patients may be reversed, and improvement sustained, using a complex, 36-point therapeutic program that involves comprehensive changes in diet, brain stimulation, exercise, optimizing sleep, specific pharmaceuticals and vitamins, and multiple additional steps that affect brain chemistry. A new approach is Neuro AD, a treatment developed in Israel for the management of AD symptoms. Neuro AD challenges a person to solve problems on a computer right after it uses noninvasive electromagnetic energy to stimulate the brain region required to give the answer. So far, two small controlled trials have been completed, and a larger trial is under way at Harvard as well as sites across the country. This, from Harvard Health Publications’ Can we reverse Alzheimer’s?

There are suggestions that coconut oil will cure it. You think? I see a site that calls it ‘Diabetes of the brain’, and saying that diabetics are three times more likely to develop AD. Conclusion

I believe the best thing for AD is prevention. Nothing has cured it yet that is available in a quick search. Consume a Whole Food, Plant-Based diet, low salt oil sugar or refined foods, avoid heavy metals, exercise, sleep, learn, and greatly increase your chance of not becoming demented.
