Luck? I don’t know anything about luck. I’ve never banked on it and I’m afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: Hard work - and realising what is opportunity and what isn’t.

Thomas Edison (1847-1931) Thomas Alva Edison (February 11th, 1847 – October 18th, 1931) was an American inventor and businessman. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph (pictured above), the motion picture camera and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and largescale teamwork to the process of invention, and is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory. Edison was a prolific inventor, holding 1,093 US patents in his name as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. More significant than the number of Edison’s patents are the impacts of his inventions, many of which established major new highemployment industries world-wide, notably electric light and power utilities, sound recording and motion pictures. Edison’s inventions also contributed to mass communication and, in particular, telecommunications. Of inventions that didn’t work he said “I haven’t failed, I’ve just found ways that won’t work”.

Vince Lombardi (1917-1970) Vincent Thomas “Vince” Lombardi (June 11th, 1913 – September 3rd, 1970) was an American football player, coach and business executive. He is best known as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s, where he led the team to three straight and five total league championships in seven years, including winning two Super Bowls. Lombardi is considered by many to be one of the best and most successful coaches in National Football League (NFL) history. The Super Bowl trophy is now named in his honour. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. One of his greatest contributions to the sport was his tolerant nature. He was a vocal opponent against racism at a time when it was commonplace, and vigourously defended one of his players when it emerged he was having an interracial relationship and some parties wanted the man dismissed to prevent negative opinions. He also turned away sponsorship deals from companies he found unethical.
