A song, a rose, a fond memory
After visiting an elementary classroom to deliver a singing Valentine, a Hawks quartet poses for a photo. The quartet, one of many formed for the annual fundraiser, included Bob Minesinger, Gary Owens, Tom Harrington and Bob Kerdus. School deliveries are Kerdus’s favorite. “It’s great to watch the reactions of the kids,” Kerdus said. “Their eyes say it all.”
For over 60 years, the Harmony Hawks have offered...
Competition, service, fun CSD Contest spurs chorus growth When the Midwest fall colors near their October peak, the choruses of the Barbershop Harmony Society hope to do the same. After a year of learning and polishing their contest set, listening to coaches’ suggestions and perfecting their staging, it’s time for the annual Central States Barbershop Convention and Contest. For the Harmony Hawks, the contest is not an end in itself but a catalyst for improvement.
Touchdown!
The chorus won “most Improved” with their perfomance of “Mr. Touchdown” in the 2004 contest.
“We are active in district competition because it makes sure that our singing quality continues to improve,” said Harmony Hawk Allan Harms. Chapter president Bob Kerdus believes that the chorus’s improvement efforts are paying off. “We scored in the top ten in a five-state area that contains the reigning World Champion Chorus and two World Champion Quartets,” he said.
Traveling to contest also provides a great time for families to enjoy the Barbershop culture and enjoy the hospitality of some great Midwestern cities.
Gettin’ down
The chorus puts a final polish on their uptune in a warm-up for last year’s CSD contest.
Annual golf outing
Rollings Acres near Center Point hosted golf and great fun in last summer’s annual golf outing. As always with the Hawks, the event is all about teamwork, fun and socializing.

Hawks remember G.B. ‘Buzz’ Brown A ‘most energetic barbershopper’, 59-year member passes
Singing on the International Contest stage with the New Tradition Chorus was one of three international contests for Buzz Brown who passed away October 14. Buzz was a 59-year member of the Society and a long-time Harmony Hawk.
By Bob Kerdus As the Harmony Hawks perform this year’s shows they are remembering a brother in harmony, G.B. “Buzz” Brown who passed away October 14. “Singing has been a huge part of Buzz Brown’s life since he was a boy soprano in Cedar Falls, Iowa,” read his obituary in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Buzz sang in high school, in college at Iowa State Teacher’s College (UNI) and since 1952 as a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He was a very active member of the Cedar Rapids Harmony Hawks Chorus since 1957, serving as an officer, earning Barbershopper of the Year honors in 1963 and winning 3rd place in the international contest in 1959. He appeared on the international competition stage a total of 13 times. Highlights of Buzz’s
Relations Committee Chairman, and Area Counselor. Buzz loved quartetting, and when the society came out with the Polecat program, Buzz not only learned his bass part, but learned all parts for each of the songs! Jim White sang with Buzz in the Diplomats quartet in the ‘60s. He described Buzz as a funny, quirky, and a great bass. “I thoroughly enjoyed those years,” he said. “The only problem occurred when I was driving to a job and Buzz had to play the part of the driver ed teacher and tell me all I was doing wrong! One rainy night we were driving to a singing engagement and my windshield wipers quit. Somewhere he came up with some string and ran it out the car windows to the wipers and sat in the passenger seat pulling the wipers from side to
G.B. Buzz Brown Barbershop Society history include receiving his 50-year pin on the international contest stage, and competing at internationals several times, and winning 4th and 5th place medals with the New Tradition Chorus. Buzz traveled more than 450 miles round trip to the Chicago area to prepare for the international competitions. Buzz held practically every office with the Harmony Hawks over the years including Secretary, Treasurer, and Program VP. He also held district offices as Secretary, Public
side while I continued to drive. It worked and we arrived safely.” The two other 59year barbershoppers in the Harmony Hawks are Dean Kruse and Bob Nance. Dean Kruse said, “I sang with Buzz in the Artful Dodgers and a few other pick-up quartets. He really loved to sing. He was always there to fill in when a quartet was needed.” Bob Nance had some humorous memories of Buzz. “He was a tall skinny kid when he started with the Harmony Hawks, known
as the Cedar Rapids Chorus back then, and his mother came with him,” said Nance. “He had this buzz haircut and some of the members of the Hawks gave him the nickname “Buzz.” That is how he got his name. I remember Buzz telling me, ‘I’m 5’19” and still growing.’ He always had a good sense of humor.” Nance described Buzz as the most energetic barbershopper he has ever known. “He was all barbershop… 100%, all the time. He loved the Barbershop Society.”
Al Harms, Dick Steele and Ralph Wasik joined Buzz in this Valentine’s quartet, one of many for Buzz. 15

Barbershopper of the Year - 2010 Ryan Schlader Ryan Schlader was honored for both his singing and his behind the scenes work. Ryan’s continual improvment as a bass in the chorus and in the Odd Man Out quartet has made him one of the our most valuable members. Serving as chorus webmaster for the past several years and as marketing vice-president for the past two years, his
efforts have helped the chorus raise its community profile with appearances with the municipal band, last January’s ICKYS Awards, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Gazette articles, and TV and radio spots. Ryan’s work has set the stage for this summer’s exciting appearance with the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra on the Patriotic Pops Concert.

About our chorus The Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus has been an active nonprofit service organization in Eastern Iowa for over 50 years with more than 50 active members. The Harmony Hawks chorus is a member in good standing of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Our other activities include performances throughout Eastern Iowa, Singing Valentines on February 14th, a charity Gospel concert in the fall, and a district competition with other Barbershop choruses around the Midwest. Visit the Harmony Hawks at www. harmonyhawks.org Also look for the Harmony Hawks on Facebook and MySpace.
For 70 years, a unique American art form As much a part of American culture as Old Glory, Mom and apple pie, barbershop quartet singing is an original American musical art form. It thrives today through the efforts of an organization originally named the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. The organization is now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society. Though the roots of four-part harmony go back more than a century, it was not until the near-accidental formation of the Society that barbershop quartet music was actively promoted. The Society’s founding was whimsical, but it takes its mission to “Keep The Whole World Singing” very seriously indeed. www.barbershop.org 23
