THE INSIDE SCOOP issue 1

behind the scenes You may have all seen the DPH Yamaha race truck at the the Australian MX nationals, a professional outfit with four riders ranging between MX1, MX2 and Women’s class. What you might not of seen is the behind scenes of this race team, the inside operation. We had a chat with Dale Hocking Team owner earlier this week to find out just how this team works and what goes on in the background (behind closed doors).
Thanks for taking the time out to have a chat with us today Dale, tell us how did DPH race team start? DPH started with the kids racing we built trailer after trailer and we got bigger than we built a truck we started looking after Sam Martin and we slowly got bigger and bigger, that was 6 years ago so it all really began in 2010. Tell us a bit about yourself and previous involvement with racing? I was heavily involved in motocross in the 80’s and 90’s working for Trevor flood racing and spinning spanners for the likes of Jimmy Ellis and Steven Breese I span spanners for Steven for a long time. I then gave it up early 90’s as I got married and started to settle down to have a family. Who works behind scenes at DPH? Jarrod Pynne myself and Boyd my son all work behind scenes as Jarrod is our main mechanic and builds the bikes Boyd helps him during the week as well as help myself maintain the truck and do all the running around during the week. We have Ross Beaton Jed’s older brother Cameron Barbera and Alex Quinn all help on weekends too.
You have had a successful run so far with Jed Beaton this year in the MX2 class. Tell us how you managed to get Jed on your race team? Initially we had Wade Hunter organised to ride for us, Gavin Eales from Serco race team offered Wade a lot more money to move across to their team, so Wade went with them instead. I instantly rang Jed and offered Jed the ride, I actually wanted to put Jed on but I thought he already had a ride set with Serco but that had actually fallen through. So Jed was my first option and I gave him a call.
Tough break with Lawson Boppings illness we see that you have managed to put Jacob Wright in his place for the remainder of the season, how did you manage to snap Jacob up late in the piece like you did? How has Jacob been adjusting to the team so far? Jacob approached us, he had heard a whisper that Lawson was not going to continue the rest of the mx season and at the time Jacob was riding as a privateer, so I offered Jacob the ride I knew that he had obviously rode for CDR Yamaha in 2014 and I knew the kid has got some raw speed, so I thought we will give him the opportunity to give it a go. Jacob works well he has adjusted well to the Team and to the bikes all works great he just needs to get a little bit more fit.
Looking forward what are your plans for Aus Supercross this year? Who will be riding under DPH? What have you got planed for AUS SX fans? We will have Jed racing in the SX2 class Lawson will be back racing MX1 and Hayden Mellross looks like might be on the cards too. What sort of work/training/prep goes in between rounds of MXN for the team?Cleaning bikes building bikes and getting the truck organised, Jed works a lot with Ross between rounds and obviously having Jacob in QLD he does his own thing he has his own track and trainer. Thanks for taking the time out to chat with us Dale.
