FILM.FEST.REPEAT. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Tampa Film Institute, Inc., our tireless staff, and our legion of dedicated volunteers, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 13th annual Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival! As we ended the 2018 festival, we were surely proud of what we had accomplished. Specifically, we solidified our reputation as a top 50 festival, we awarded over $6,000 in college scholarships and provided approximately $4,000 in film equipment to local schools, we expanded our footprint throughout the Bay Area by featuring the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival, we presented one of the strongest programming schedules in our history, and we lit up the Ybor nights with outstanding events and parties. However, it wasn’t long after the 2018 festival closed, that we realized that we wanted to do more! So, we rolled our sleeves up and got back to work, with ambitions of putting on the best GIFF, yet! As GIFF enters its teenage years, we appropriately look towards the future. Not just the future of the festival, but also, the future of the Bay Area, the future of film and future film makers. This year, our programming schedule promises to surpass the stellar program of 2018! Top to bottom, this film schedule is simply outstanding. In addition, we have continued our beautiful collaboration with the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival, highlighting the cultural diversity of our great community and providing more opportunities for film lovers to attend screenings at more Bay Area locations. Once again, our industry panels will prove to be stimulating and informative, and our after-parties, events and VIP gatherings will be the talk of the town! We have moved our annual Suncoast Credit Union Family Fun Day to Armature Works, on Saturday, March 23rd featuring an outdoor screening of “The Incredibles 2”! Our High School Film Competition has hit its stride, receiving more submissions than ever before. Most importantly, with the generous support of our sponsors and community partnerships, we will be awarding $15,000 in college scholarships and $5,000 in film equipment to local students and schools! If you are reading this, then you already understand the importance of film. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the support of our Title Sponsor, Suncoast Credit Union, our Community Sponsors, Partners, Members and film-lovers, like you! We do this for you, but we could not have done this without you. We are grateful for your support and your commitment to FILM. FEST. REPEAT! Your friend,

Joseph N. Alexander JOSEPH N. ALEXANDER, PRESIDENT TAMPA FILM INSTITUTE, INC.

THE GASPARILLA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Greetings: It is a pleasure to welcome all those attending the 13th Annual Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival hosted by The Tampa Film Institute, Inc. and held March 19-24, 2019. This is sure to be an exciting festival, offering attendees opportunities to not only see films, but interact with talented filmmakers, directors and actors. We are honored to be home to this well-known event and in showcasing our community to each of you. We are appreciative of the efforts of the organizers, volunteers and sponsors in promoting Tampa as a “City of the Arts” and ensuring that the festival is enjoyed by everyone.

Dear Filmmakers and Festival Guests, It is with immense pleasure I welcome you to the 13th annual Gasparilla International Film Festival. Over the coming days, you will have the opportunity to experience wonderful films from around the world. I encourage you to find movies that do more than just delight but also challenge your way of thinking.

The mission of The Tampa Film Institute includes inspiring, educating, and entertaining Tampa Bay’s diverse population through an annual celebration of film, year-round events, community outreach, and social awareness initiatives that foster communication, generate economic impact, and provide support for the film industry in the Tampa Bay area and throughout the state of Florida.

Cinema is one of the most influential tools we have to communicate ideas and perspectives. Film is a shared experience, one that invites a dialogue between the audience and the filmmaker. Take this time to meet new people, engage with other filmmakers and artists, and substantively talk about the films you’ve seen.

Tampa offers a unique, exciting experience for all its visitors, and our rich history, entertainment venues, museums, parks and restaurants ensure a memorable time. I hope you will have the opportunity to experience the many cultural and historical venues our city has to offer. Whether you visit one of our landmark attractions, ride the streetcar from downtown to Sparkman Wharf and Historic Ybor City, stroll along Tampa’s Riverwalk or Bayshore Boulevard, spend some time at a signature park, enjoy a meal at one of our fine restaurants or visit our many first-class shopping areas, we are sure you will find your stay to be an unforgettable experience.

Film Festivals are both a reflection and a beacon to the rich culture that makes up the fabric of a community. It is my fondest wish GIFF will continue to light the way. By attending GIFF, I hope you too will become ambassadors and a beacon of the fantastic talent and culture unique to Tampa Bay. Thank you for your support, and we will see you at the movies!

Sincerely,

On behalf of our citizens, I welcome you to our city and wish each of you a memorable and successful festival. Sincerely,

Tyler Martinolich Bob Buckhorn

Executive Director Film Tampa Bay

Greetings, More than 20 years ago, Suncoast Credit Union began investing in the education, health and well-being of our community and the commitment is still alive today. Many people do not know but Suncoast has invested more than $25 million to carry out our mission of improving lives by supporting initiatives that create quality of life. This includes the arts. We recognize that the arts provide dimension in our lives and give a creative outlet for those with talent or skills that deserve to be seen and appreciated! And the arts expose us to different ways of thinking — improving cultures, outlooks, attitudes and perspectives. That’s why the Gasparilla International Film Festival is a natural fit for Suncoast Credit Union, now in our fifth year. GIFF creates the dialogue and brings enjoyment and a gathering place for film lovers and those who will grow to love film! Yet at our core, we are the same: we work to make our community a better place to live. We are excited to support GIFF again this year to celebrate our talented film makers, directors, actors, and supporters. We look forward to being different - together.

Sincerely,

Sheri Eaton Senior Vice President Service Center Operations GIFF Board Member 6801 East Hillsborough Avenue | P.O. Box 11904 | Tampa, FL 33680 | 813-621-7511 | 800-999-5887 | SuncoastCreditUnion.com

AMAZING GRACE

DIR: MATTEO GARRONE | 102 MIN | ITALY / FRANCE | DRAMA

DIR: ALAN ELLIOTT, SYDNEY POLLACK | 87 MIN | USA | DOCUMENTARY

Starring: Marcello Fonte, Edoardo Pesce

In January 1972, Aretha Franklin gave two days of gospel performances at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, LA, recording what would become her best-selling album, Amazing Grace. The sessions were captured by a film crew led by Sydney Pollack, but the footage wound up shelved in a vault and has remained one of the lost cinematic treasures of twentieth-century music. Before Pollack’s death in 2008, he expressed a wish for the film to be completed, and producer Alan Elliott took it up with a team of supporters as a passion project.

It’s 1992, and teenager Phillip sneaks away for a wild spring break, however, when he crosses state lines he instead finds a charming lake community where he spots his father with another woman. Turns out, his father lives in this town and has an entire other family. With this new heartbreaking information, Philip realizes he can wallow in his father’s deceit or take matters into his own hands.

In a seaside village on the outskirts of an Italian city, where the only law seems to be survival of the fittest, Marcello is a slight, mild-mannered man who divides his days between working at his modest dog grooming salon, caring for his daughter Alida, and being coerced into the petty criminal schemes of the local bully, Simoncino, an ex-boxer who terrorizes the neighborhood. When Simoncino’s abuse finally brings Marcello to a breaking point, he decides to stand up for his own dignity through an act of vengeance, with unintended consequences.

Starring: John Lithgow, Blythe Danner, Derek Cecil, Katie Asellton, Sophoe Thatcher, Eve Harlow

THE PARTING GLASS is the story of a suicide and how it ripples and tears through a family—testing their bonds to each other and their memories. The family gathers in Missouri, where Colleen (Anna Paquin), now dead, was last living. Her brother, Danny (Denis O’Hare), and his two sisters, Mare (Cynthia Nixon) and Al (Melissa Leo), meet up with their father, Tommy (Ed Asner), and their sister’s estranged husband, Karl (Rhys Ifans), and they set out on an odyssey. Together, they attempt to piece together Colleen’s last moments and to make sense of her death.

Retiree Ed Hemsler (John Lithgow) spends his quiet days watching the news, checking internet forums, and preparing for the end of the world. DIR: BOBBY CAMPBELL | 95 MIN | USA | DOCUMENTARY

Walking on Water follows internationally renowned environmental artist—and Paounov’s fellow countryman— Christo on his quest to realize “The Floating Piers,” originally conceived in 1970 by Christo and his late wife and collaborator, Jeanne-Claude. In 2016, seven years after Jeanne-Claude’s death, this stunning, sitespecific masterpiece—which allows visitors to walk across a great stretch of water, buoyed by polyethylene cubes draped in luminous yellow fabric—was finally cleared to be mounted on Italy’s Lake Iseo, which lies at the foot of the Alps. But securing a location proved to be only the first step in a tumultuous process of creative problem-solving and prickly negotiations.

LIFE AND NOTHING MORE DIR: ANTONIO MÉNDEZ ESPARZA | 114 MIN | SPAIN / USA

Starring: Andrew Bleechington, Regina Williams, Robert Williams, Ry’Nesia Chambers In his remarkable second feature, Spanish-born filmmaker Antonio Méndez Esparza follows up his debut drama AQUÍ Y ALLÁ with a sensitive portrait of working-class people struggling in the margins of society. Stressed by the mounting pressures of raising two children and fighting to get by on minimum wage, single mother Regina (Regina Williams) longs to find more to her life than constant work, while attempting to instill in 14-yearold Andrew (Andrew Bleechington) the values that she hopes will prevent him from winding up in prison like his father. Andrew yearns, too, for his absent father and a sense of purpose, driving him towards a dangerous crossroads that threatens to upend the tenuous balance Regina tirelessly endeavors to maintain. Méndez Esparza employs documentary-style realism in this emotive snapshot of race, class, and the bonds of family in contemporary America.

Seeking to reject his strict religious upbringing and fulfill his dreams, a pastor’s ambitious son hopes to wed into a wealthy Jewish family and find success in 19th century Copenhagen, in A FORTUNATE MAN, a sweeping romance from Danish Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bille August.

The rise of Golda Meir from Russian schoolgirl to American school-teacher to a leader of international politics as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel is one of the most thrilling and amazing stories of the 20th Century. Much of the focus of this stage play written by William Gibson is on the period surrounding the 1973 Yom Kippur War when Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria.

With his ex-wife’s untimely demise, Reuven suddenly thrust into the position of caring for his now-grown son, whom he first considers placing in a group home. DIR: STEPHANE KAAS | 67 MIN | NETHERLANDS | DOCUMENTARY

Eli has dreams of becoming a professional artist and discovers that his grandpa, Samuel (Hal Linden), a Jewish dry cleaner, was heroically saved from Nazi capture in Germany by a young woman when he was a boy.

Rescue Bus 300 is an intense docu-drama based on the 1984 hijacking of bus line 300, in which 41 passengers and a bus driver were attacked and held captive by terrorists. This film elucidates the crazy story of the hijacking and aftermath from a passenger’s perspective, highlighting the remarkable acts of heroism that took place.

Blurring the lines of fantasy and reality to create a modern fairy tale, ETGAR KERET: BASED ON A TRUE STORY seeks to illuminate the compulsive creativity behind the renowned Israeli writer and humorist. Etgar Keret is known universally for his surreal but relatable yarns featuring off-kilter humor, startling turns and unexpected endings, with truth versus fantasy always in question.

DIR: TOMMY LANG | 90 MIN | ISRAEL | DRAMA/ROMANCE

DIR: ISAAC CHEREM | 95 MIN | MEXICO | NARRATIVE

DIR: DUKI DOR | 90 MIN | GERMANY/ISRAEL | NARRATIVE

Morning Trail is about saying goodbye and about love. It tells the story of Ella, a famous actor, who despite her deep grief over her loss finds the strength to open up again to a new man, Gaby, in the middle of the desert. Gaby, who carries with him the death of his wife during their son’s birth, has been hiking the same desert area, where he first met his wife, for over 30 years.

Coming into her own, a young woman from Mexico City finds herself torn between her Syrian-Jewish family and a forbidden love, in the delicate, melancholic romance LEONA. Naian González Norvind gives an intimate, honest portrayal of Ariela, an independentlyminded artist living with her family in a cloistered Jewish neighborhood.

With her husband struggling to keep his new restaurant afloat, Orna is the main breadwinner for their three children, and must now choose between her job and her sense of selfworth. Director Michal Aviad’ (Dimona Twist, BJFF 2017) beautifully shot film tells a poignant story that echoes loudly in the era of #MeToo.

WHO WILL WRITE OUR HISTORY DIR: ROBERTA GROSSMAN | 95 MIN | USA, POLAND | DOCUMENTARY

Determined to defeat Nazi lies with pen and paper, an underground movement of Jewish intellectuals carries out an extraordinary form of wartime resistance, in WHO WILL WRITE OUR HISTORY. Days after being sealed in the Warsaw Ghetto’s squalor, a clandestine band of journalists, scholars and leaders chose to resist. Led by historian Emanuel Ringelblum (with the code name Oyneg Shabes), they write tirelessly, creating a record of the Holocaust, which would survive even if they did not. Their extraordinary letters, confessionals, poems and photographs, buried in milk cans and metal boxes, were retrieved after the war. This cache is a penetrating window into every aspect of life and death in the Ghetto. Acclaimed filmmakers Roberta Grossman and Nancy Spielberg combine new interviews, rarely seen footage, stunning dramatizations, as well as diary excerpts voiced by actors Adrien Brody and Joan Allen, to honor these heroic stewards of historical preservation.
