I’m applying to the University of Oxford next year, so I’m putting a lot of effort in right now. The plan is to study Physics and Philosophy. Oxford is the goal.
A Level student Tom Scratcherd has set his sights firmly on a place at the University of Oxford. He'll be applying for the 2010 intake to study for a degree in Physics and Philosophy.
"I had a look around, spoke to some of the science lecturers and it seems like a good option. If I'm going to study I might as well do it at the best place in the country."
It might seem an unusual step for Tom, who left school to pursue a career in music, and achieved a BTEC National Diploma and Foundation Degree in Music Production.
Tom's putting a lot of effort in with his subject choices of Physics, Maths and English to make sure that he gets the university place he desires.
But four years on, while he still has a love of music, Tom has decided he wants to progress down a more academic route and start studying again. He said: "It's something I'd been thinking about for a long time. I'd always had an interest in physics, and wanted to get back into academia." Tom's mind was made up after a visit to Oxford to see his brother, who is studying for a postgraduate degree in history.
He said: "I'm perfectly happy with Gateshead College so far. The staff are knowledgeable and the facilities are great. I chose to come here after hearing about the brand new campus. It didn't disappoint. I'm putting a lot of effort in right now to get where I want to be. Oxford is the goal." Tom Scratcherd A Levels English, Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Extended Project

Regina's Story
I got an unconditional place to study a degree in fashion at one of the best Universities in the country.
GATESHEAD FOR SUCCESS
When Regina Salcevic first arrived in the UK she couldn't speak a word of English. Three years on and Regina, from Lithuania, has not only conquered the language barrier, she's also well on her way to realising her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
Gina's a girl who knows the meaning of hard work. She's up before dawn each morning ready for her cleaning shift at the College, which finishes just as she starts her studies for the day. After class it's back for a few hours on the evening shift before home time.
Gina, as she is known to her friends, has always had a love of fashion. She recalls customising clothes as a child, painstakingly altering garments by hand until her mother bought her a sewing machine. She even designed and made her own evening dress for her high school ball.
She says: "I work hard but it's worth it. I want to improve my English and get a good portfolio of work together.
That's her ambition; to design and make beautiful clothes and maybe one day to even open her own boutique. And she's working hard to realise that dream. She spent her first two years in England getting to grips with the language by enrolling on the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course at Gateshead College. She then combined working as a cleaner at the College with studying for a BTEC Foundation Studies in Art and Design and a Level 1 English language course.
"When I first enrolled I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to keep up, but it has been great. I enjoy the class and get a lot of help and support from my tutor, which makes studying a lot easier. Gina is now one step closer to her dream having secured a place at Northumbria University to study fashion design. Regina Salcevic English and BTEC Foundation Studies in Art and Design

GATESHEAD FOR SUCCESS Dan and Ian’s Story Music students Dan Boots and Ian Simpson always dreamed of making chart topping hits, becoming superstar DJs and getting signed to a top record label. And now their dreams are coming true. The duo, known as The Stereojackers, have been signed by top production company Audiofreaks and are taking the dance world by storm with their sound. This was a distant dream for Dan, 23 from Winlaton Mill and Ian, 18 from Low Fell when they enrolled on a National Diploma in Music Technology at Gateshead College, two years ago, but getting the break that they needed to get into the music industry has been every bit as fantastic as they imagined.
We’ve been signed to top production company Audiofreaks and are releasing our own original tracks.
Dan said; “When we sent some samples to Audiofreaks we knew that we had given it our best shot and we hoped we had what it takes to make the them sit up and listen”.
But their success didn’t happen overnight. The duo worked hard to get their sound right and they are continuing to give 100% to stay successful in a very tough business. “It’s hard work and the commitment is huge, but it’s worth it”, said Ian. “To hear your own track being played in a club is amazing and seeing people enjoy what you’ve created is the best feeling. Gateshead College gave us the best start possible; the lecturers and facilities were top quality and the course itself helped us to develop our technical skills and passion for music.” The Stereojackers are now looking forward to even more success with more of their tracks heading to the charts. GATESHEAD FOR SUCCESS Daniel’s Story Seventeen year old Daniel Rundle, studying at Gateshead College's Academy for Sport, has been called up to represent the region after being scouted while playing for the College team. Daniel, a student on the BTEC National Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science, was one of a number of talented young players picked from colleges across the region, to try out against the North West, giving him a greater chance of achieving one of his goals - being scouted for a professional club.
Rugby is my life. I eat, sleep and breathe it. It’s down to Gateshead College that I’ve been picked to represent the North East region by British Colleges.
He's already working towards his other goal, planning to complete his College course and go on to study at university to become a PE teacher. As well as the College team, the young full back also plays for Westoe Rugby Club in South Shields, where he's been for the past five years.
He says: "Rugby is my life, I love it. I want to play professionally and the College is helping me to follow that dream. I'm really pleased I was picked by British Colleges giving me the opportunity to showcase my skills and hopefully be scouted for a professional club." Daniel is a big fan of Newcastle Falcons, watching them when he can and taking inspiration from his hero Johnny Wilkinson, who he's met on a number of occasions. "Johnny is an excellent rugby player. He's really down to earth and I aspire to be as good as him." Daniel Rundle BTEC National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science
