LUKE’S NO LONGER PUZZLED. Luke Farrell, 19, is clear about where his future lies as he’s launched his first startup business, Puzzled, a digital design company that specialises in app and website design. Luke is already looking to expand and employ a fellow student from the college thanks to its instant success. Based in the Northern Design Centre, Luke said: “Gateshead College was the best decision I ever made and I would never have launched my business without the help, guidance and financial support they gave me. “I have always wanted to have my own business and I am so excited to be launching Puzzled at such a young age. There is so much I want to develop and achieve in my career and it has already got off to a great start.”

We have a team of qualified, expert and independent Careers Advisers, something many schools can no longer afford. Working with you from day one, they’ll help you map out your future and make good decisions: whether that’s applying for a job, supporting your university application or helping you fast track to an apprenticeship. You can make an appointment with them whilst you’re still at school to help you decide what to do when you leave.

Work experience

With a network of over 450 employers, we will give you an inspirational work experience placement that helps build the valuable skills employers want and provide practical examples for university applications. Many of our students have secured full time jobs with their placement employer.

JobLab Digital

JobLab is our bespoke website dedicated to guiding you through the process of getting on the right track to the career you want. Packed full of advice and top tips on topics such as getting your first job, going to university and even setting up your own business, the site also has lots of job vacancies, including part time work, apprenticeships, work placements and volunteering opportunities. We also have a dedicated JobLab space where you can get help and advice, attend seminars and meet employers.

Studying these subjects at college is different to school; we’ll show you how relevant these skills are to the job you want to do and embed them into your lessons. A Levels.

As part of Gateshead College Sixth Form, you can study three or four A Level subjects. You can also combine an A Level subject with a vocational study programme, such as business studies.

Apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are a mix of working and practical training.

What are they? A Levels tend to be more academic and a traditional way of learning. With us, you’ll also gain work experience. You have tutorials in each subject you choose and an exam at the end of each year. AS Levels last one year and A Levels last two years.

What are they? Apprentices usually spend four days in work and one day at college. You will be paid a weekly wage and complete a collection of qualifications including a vocational qualification and a technical certificate relevant to the industry, as well as English, maths and ICT.

Is it for me?

If you like writing essays, sitting exams and a traditional style of learning similar to school.

If you’re ready to get out into the world of work and earn a wage.

We offer a range of subjects across 15 different industry sectors. You pick just one vocational subject. Fast-track to an apprenticeship option is available.*

What are they? More practical and hands on, vocational training will equip you with skills in a specific sector or trade. Progress is assessed through projects and practical work rather than exams and contact with employers is frequent. Types of vocational courses include diploma, NVQ, BTEC, City & Guilds, certificate and extended diploma.

What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a mix of employment and training. You’ll work for an employer whilst also spending time at college gaining industry recognised qualifications.

How much will I earn? This depends on your employer but there are nationally set minimum wages depending on your age.

What will I achieve? A national qualification that is respected by employers around the world and a huge amount of work experience, putting you ahead in the jobs market.

How long does it take? It depends on the type of apprenticeship and can vary from 12 months to 4 years. Most apprentices work for at least 30 hours a week.

Motor Vehicle Studies Level 1

Vehicle Body Repair & Paint Refinishing Level 1

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Although there may be no specific entry requirements, it’s helpful to have evidence of previous study such as GCSEs at grades D-G or equivalent. What will I learn? If you love cars but are unsure how to get into the industry, this introductory course is for you.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Although there may be no specific entry requirements, it’s helpful to have evidence of previous study such as GCSEs at grades D-G or equivalent. What will I learn? This course, accredited by the Institute of Motor Industry, will give you the essential skills, knowledge and experience you need to work as a body repairer in garages, dealerships and specialist body repair shops. It’s a practical hands-on course and you’ll be training in our state-of-the-art workshops on the latest vehicles and industry standard resources. You’ll also follow a formal paint refinishing qualification so that by the end of your programme, you’ll have the skills and experience of both of these specialist areas.

Accredited by the Institute of Motor Industry, it is a hands-on course with a focus on practical activities in our stateof-the-art workshops. You’ll gain skills in basic motor vehicle maintenance, repair and service and have the chance to choose an area of specialism after the first three months. You’ll also have the chance to take up work experience with local employers.

Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Level 3

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Ideally a Level 1 Service and Repair qualification and an initial assessment in English and maths to ensure you are enrolled to the right level programme. What will I learn? This course will give you the technical skills needed to work in today’s motor vehicle repair industry, including the diagnosis of non-complex system faults. It is a very practical course and you’ll get hands on experience working on the latest models. The course provides essential knowledge for those who want to work as a vehicle technician in all types of dealerships and maintenance depots and garages. You’ll also take up work experience with local employers.

Duration 2 years Entry requirements A Level 2 automotive qualification and/ or at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths. What will I learn? Accredited by the Institute of Motor Industry, this course will give you the essential knowledge for working as a service technician in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. It’s a very practical course and you’ll get hands on experience in our state-of-the-art workshops working on the latest vehicles. You will also gain a qualification in refrigerant handling and knowledge of electric and hybrid vehicles and have the opportunity to complete work experience with local businesses.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Level 1 Body Repair and Paint Refinishing or a good level of practical experience and an initial assessment in English and maths to ensure you are enrolled to the right level programme. What will I learn? This course is unique as it gives you skills in two specialist areas, body repair and paint refinishing. In our state-ofthe-art workshops you’ll gain essential knowledge working on a wide range of vehicles. You’ll also take up work experience with local employers. This qualification forms part of an advanced level apprenticeship, giving you a head start over other candidates if you wish to progress to an apprenticeship. Or you can progress to our Level 3 course.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements A Level 2 automotive qualification and/ or at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths. What will I learn? This course will provide you with the essential knowledge that you’ll need to work as a body repairer or paint refinisher working on a wide range of vehicles in all types of garages, dealerships and specialist body repair shops. Accredited by the Institute of Motor Industry, you’ll train in our state-of-the-art workshops and take up work experience with local employers.

Vehicle Technology Level 3

Duration 1 year Entry requirements A BTEC Introductory Diploma or Certificate in a related subject. At least four GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths. For vocational programmes, it would help to have a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience. What will I learn? This is the second year of a two year course and ideal if you want to progress into higher education to study the design and construction of motor vehicles with a focus on vehicle technology and construction. You’ll get hands-on in our fully equipped, industry standard workshops diagnosing, building and repairing various types of vehicles and the associated systems. You’ll also gain a qualification in vehicle air conditioning and knowledge of electric and hybrid vehicles and have the chance to undertake work experience.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements At least four GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths or a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience. What will I learn? You will study the design and construction of motor vehicles with a focus on vehicle technology, including engine technology and principles, chassis systems, electrical/electronic theory, transmissions, mathematics and science for technicians. If you are looking for a career in engineering, this course will give you the necessary skills and knowledge to enable you to progress into an apprenticeship, employment or further training. This course is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and understanding of the administration activities you will need to progress to higher levels of study, an apprenticeship or employment.

This exciting course is designed for learners who are passionate about business skills and want to develop a range of personal skills and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

The course is very practical and enables you to learn a lot about the key aspects of business administration. Through a combination of classroom and practical learning in our simulated office workshop, you will get a feel for a real workplace environment and gain understanding of effective teamwork, communication, finance, diary systems, organising meetings and IT skills. You’ll also receive CV, job hunting and interview support.

The course is split over three projects which will cover what’s involved in starting a business including marketing, branding and sales skills. You will also have the chance to be mentored by a local employer and take part in work experience. On completion, you can progress to our Level 3 courses or an apprenticeship.

This course combines business and finance to give you the skills and knowledge to enter the field of industry and commerce or to progress on to further study programmes or to university.

You will be given the opportunity to take part in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event and work on event organisation and management for external partners. You will have access to our tutorial programme which equips you for the world outside of college through money management training, visits to employers, help with job hunting, interviews and confidence building. You’ll work on projects set by employers, be mentored by a local employer and take part in work experience. On completion, you can progress into work or on to a foundation or honours degree.

You’ll study fundamental knowledge of a range of business organisations, business resources, an introduction to marketing and business communication along with optional units in marketing, human resources or management. Duration 1 year Entry requirements No previous qualifications are required, however you will need to attend an interview. What will I learn? If you have enthusiasm and a passion for food, this is the perfect course to get your career started in the creative and fast-paced catering and hospitality industry. You’ll train in our professional standard kitchens creating dishes to be served to customers in our two restaurants Enfields and the Greenhouse Brasserie. You’ll gain basic skills and knowledge including food preparation and cooking techniques, health and safety, essential industry legislation and menu planning. Hospitality Supervision & Leadership Level 3

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Level 2 Professional Cookery or equivalent. What will I learn? Covering a range of skills and knowledge demanded by the industry, this course is ideal if you would like to work at a supervisory level, work as a senior chef or specialise in a particular field of catering. You’ll have the opportunity to lead a team of students, preparing food for our commercial restaurants, Enfields and Greenhouse Brasserie. You will develop higher-level skills, including preparing and cooking complex dishes, kitchen management, menu and event planning, food art, product development and staff organisation, training and team development. You’ll also take part in a group project to organise an event, past projects have included a charity dinner at the Marriott Hotel and take-overs of local restaurants.

You’ll also get the opportunity to manage events and supervise, mentor and advise learners on Level 1 and 2 programmes and take part in a group project to organise an external event, past events have included a charity dinner at the Marriott Hotel and restaurant take-overs.

Patisserie Level 3 Duration 1 year Entry requirements Level 2 Professional Cookery or equivalent skills/experience. What will I learn? This course will help you progress in the specialist area of patisserie. Training in our professional kitchens, you’ll prepare dishes for customers in our restaurant Enfields. You’ll develop a range of technical skills including complex pastry, marzipan pastillage and sugar products, complex bread and dough, cakes, biscuits, sponges and scones, chocolate products, hot and cold desserts, sauces coatings and fillings, as well as building your knowledge of essential health and safety information and how to be an effective team member. You’ll also take part in a group project to organise an event and work experience. Past placements have been in Bordeaux, Malta and The Ritz Hotel.

If you would like to study this course full time you can gain work experience in our in-house restaurants. If you are already employed, you can complete the core modules of the programme by committing to one afternoon per week at college and gain the remaining evidence needed to complete this qualification in your workplace.

This qualification is designed for those aiming to become construction professionals responsible for building projects of the future in roles such as an architect, architectural technologist, building surveyor or project manager. Duration 1 year Entry requirements Four GCSE grades at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths or equivalent. A relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience would also be helpful. What will I learn? This course is the first step if you want to go to university or want a career in art and design and has been designed to equip you with the skills you need to compete in today’s thriving creative industries. First explore a range of art and design disciplines including printmaking, digital media and life drawing, which is held at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, before choosing your personal artistic direction. Finally you will write and deliver your own project brief, build a portfolio of work and take part in a final year exhibition, the best work of which is selected to show in BALTIC.

Explore the exciting world of interactive and digital design, motion graphics, visual effects, animation and pre-visualisation and prepare for a career in this cutting edge industry.

Duration 1 year (Level 2) and 2 years (Level 3) Entry requirements Level 2: A vocational qualification at Level 1 or some GCSE grades at D or above, preferably including English and maths.

You will be taught across a range of specialisms including animation, visual effects and motion graphics, interactive design, web design and concept art for film, animation and games. Duration 1 year Entry requirements Entry requirements: An appropriate vocational qualification at Level 1 or some GCSEs at grade D or above, preferably including English and maths. What will I learn? TThis course is a great preparation for further study in practical musicianship or music technology. You’ll focus on developing your practical skills and your understanding of the language of music and music production. You’ll also learn about how the music industry works, at all levels, and what you might be able to do to be employed in it. You’ll work independently and with other musicians turning your musical ideas into songs for live performance or recording.

Duration 2 years Entry requirements Four GCSEs grade A* to C, preferably including English. What will I learn? If you’re a budding producer with some experience of using music production technology and want to take your skills and knowledge to the next level, this is the course for you.

Performing Arts Level 2 Duration 1 year Entry requirements A vocational qualification at Level 1 or some GCSEs at grade D or above, preferably including English and maths. What will I learn? The main focus of this course is on acting, but you will also gain experience in dance, singing and musical theatre. You’ll work with other students on a range of performance projects in college and in local venues and be involved in a full-scale production at the end of the course in our in-house 200-seat theatre. This one year practical course offers a wide range of media skills covering different aspects of TV and film production and exploring the media industry. You’ll learn how to capture and edit video and produce your own creative film works through exciting vocational projects. On completion of this course, you’ll have the skills and confidence required to progress to a Level 2 course.

You’ll work on commissions from regional charities and businesses and produce your own work. Past graduates of this course have gone on to work in corporate video, advertising, public relations, web design, events management, theatre and art installation, as well as progressing to university.

Social Media Design and Digital Journalism Level 3 Duration 2 years Entry requirements At least four GCSE grades at grade C or above, preferably including English and maths, or an equivalent qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience. What will I learn? This course is ideal for those who want to learn the technical and creative skills to self-market and generate income from social media. You will generate content at a professional level and use social media as a creative and competitive business tool exploring journalism, media and digital design.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements You’ll need good communication skills, plenty of enthusiasm and the ability to work with other people. What will I learn? This course is ideal if you’re not sure if hairdressing or beauty therapy is for you as you’ll get a taste of both then the opportunity to choose the path you prefer. You’ll gain the basic skills you need to get started as well as developing communication skills and your creativity. Duration 1 year Entry requirements Level 2 Beauty Therapy. What will I learn? Throughout the course you will work with experienced therapists in our Baltic Salon and Spa who will support your development and give you an insight into the industry. You will follow a programme of innovative, challenging and exciting beauty units that will include facial techniques, body electro therapy, body massage and epilation. You will be trained by Demalogica to use their skin care products and get the opportunity to get hands on experience at professional salons and take part in enrichment courses to gain additional skills in areas such as spray tanning, hot stone therapy and Caflon ear piercing.

You’ll cover leadership and teamwork, citizenship, crime and custodial care, psychology as well as fitness testing and team sports. You’ll also enjoy projects with professionals such as army residential, adventure days with Royal Marines, police role playing and development days with the Royal Navy and RAF. Extended Diploma students often progress directly to degree courses with leading universities.

Public Uniformed Services Level 2 Duration 1 year Entry requirements Two GCSEs at grade C, including English and one other academic subject, or a related Level 1 qualification at distinction grade. What will I learn? This course is your chance to gain experience in the armed forces, police, fire, prison and paramedic services before applying to work in your chosen service. The course covers four core units and three optional units which are taught through a mix of classroom study, activities and field trips. You’ll build on your interpersonal and communication skills and learn how to be an effective team player. You can progress to a range of careers in the public services or continue your studies with us on the Level 3 Public Services programme.

Health, Exercise & Fitness Instruction Level 2

Duration 1 year Entry requirements One GCSE at any grade. What will I learn? The course is aimed at those who wish to start a career in the sport and active leisure industry. You’ll study all aspects of how and where to participate in sport, looking at improving fitness, healthy lifestyle, sport in the workplace and working safely. We’ll also help you to develop the skills that show your potential to an employer; that you can use your knowledge to best effect; that you have the right attitude, high standards and will be a great asset to their business. You’ll also take part in work experience.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Three GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English. What will I learn? This course will prepare you for work in the health and fitness industry. You’ll study anatomy and physiology, how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, how to communicate with and motivate clients, employment law, industry specific legislation, customer service, diet and lifestyle, how to plan group exercise sessions and how to instruct a variety of exercise sessions. On completion you can progress on to our Level 3 programmes.

This course is ideal for students who want to follow a more academic route of study that will allow them to then complete a Level 3 course and eventually progress to university. You’ll study fitness testing, how to develop a fitness programme and leading sport activities, as well as looking at a number of sports and taking part in work experience. On completion, you will have the skills necessary to get a job as a leisure attendant or a sports leader or to progress on to one of our Level 3 courses.

This course gives you the knowledge and skills to be able to apply the principles of science to enhancing sports performance and develop the foundations for a career in sport. Preventing Injuries in Sport & Active Leisure Level 3

Personal Training & Instruction Level 3

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Five GCSEs grade A*-C including English language and maths. What will I learn? This course will help you to develop the essential knowledge required to pursue a career in sport injury management. You will study the theory underpinning sports massage therapy, including functional anatomy and physiology, nutrition, classification of sports injuries and the stages of healing. In addition you will develop the understanding, skills and techniques to plan, prepare for and apply a range of sports massage methods to uninjured clients. You will also enhance your skills to evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future practice. This qualification is endorsed by the Sports Massage Association (SMA).On completion of the course you will be eligible to register with the SMA, as a Level 3 Sport Massage Practitioner. You will be required to find and undertake a compulsory work placement to practice sport massage skills in a professional environment. The course includes the units such as exercise physiology, fitness testing, managing injury and illness in sport and sport massage.

Duration 1 year Entry requirements Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification. What will I learn? This course is aimed at individuals who are already a qualified fitness instructor. You will develop the skills, knowledge and competence required in order to work unsupervised as a personal trainer. This includes being able to offer one-to-one training, baseline assessment, nutritional advice and progressive programming which is specific to the individual needs of a client. Your study programme will give you the opportunity to continue your academic development, take part in valuable work experience and enhance your employability skills such as English and maths. You will study the following units; anatomy and physiology, sports conditioning, the principles of exercise and fitness and programming and nutrition. You will also learn how to work effectively with clients, how to ensure health and safety, and business planning.
