LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

WOW, WHERE HAS THE LAST MONTH GONE! TIME FOR ANOTHER QUICK CATCH UP WITH ALL THE NEWS AND GOSSIP I’VE MANAGED TO OVERHEAR BY STANDING AROUND THE WATER COOLER! Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who took the time to phone and email last month to rave about how fabulous the new newsletter was and express appreciation for all of the work that went into it – you guys rock! And on that note, a huge apology to Jess & Melissa Thornley our Community Managers at Salamander Bay. We included a pic in the last newsletter that they’d posted on our GL Facebook staff page celebrating their exciting first day, and we mistakenly called them Mel & Jon Cusworth (GL Homestead)! Sorry guys, let’s just agree to put that in the oops file! Thanks also to everyone who sent in tidbits from their community for this newsletter and to Chris Way & Melissa Thornley for their regular updates on our internal Facebook group (you do know that if you join our group we won’t be able to access your personal information

GET IN TOUCH!

don’t you? So those drunken pics from the weekend will be safe from our prying eyes!). Now grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy the read!

COMMUNITY CENTRAL

MOAMA

oama is on the New South Wales side of the mighty Murray River right across the river from

the Victorian township of Echuca, the riverboat capital of Australia. Gateway Lifestyle Moama joined our flock late last year. This community came to us with a few challenges, and as always happens in small towns this meant that all the locals had heard the rumours and not only did they not want to move in, but many of the existing residents had their homes on the market in the vain hope of moving out! Enter Gateway Lifestyle and Community Managers Tracey and Leigh Welsh! With lots of love and support, Tracey and Leigh have witnessed a fantastic turnaround in the attitude of their residents. They have recently purchased a digital projector for their Community Centre which sees residents singing their hearts out with a little Karaoke after choir practice on Wednesday night ….. and such is their love of singing they’ve been know to belt out a few tunes on weekends too! The indoor heated pool has seen lots of action now they’ve organized a water aerobics instructor to visit twice a week. And instructor Christine has also offered free swimming lessons which has been appreciated and well attended. Tracey and Leigh have also supported a number of iniiatives including helping the residents committee with the formation of a sub-committee of returned servicemen

STAFF PROFILE

Profile NATALIE TAIT COMPLIANCE AND QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICER It seems to me that the role Natalie fills as our Compliance and Quality Assurance Officer is filled with piles of reports and spreadsheets and regulations and heavens knows what else to ensure we comply with all of the Local Councils and Government Department Regulations and Guidelines. So it’s little wonder that when Nat eventually quits the office she needs a little retail therapy …. of the vintage kind. She loves random road trips and hunting out quirky vintage shops for jewellery, typewriters and trinkets, anything with an interesting back-story. And it appears puppy couture is also on the list on some of these shopping expeditions. I’m told that special occasions in the Tait household call for more than red wine, it also needs Moet the long suffering Pug to be dressed inappropriately in …. a bunny suit!

Profile KIM SPOONER QUEENSLAND SUPPORT COMMUNITY MANAGER Many of you know Kim from her time with GL Aspley, or perhaps you’ve spoken with her in recent weeks in a mad panic as the deadline for uploading Site Agreements into Dropbox loomed large! Well I’m pleased to report that Kim is absolutely delighted that everyone pulled together and pulled it off! Kim’s role of Queensland Support Community Manager has recently been extended to include other states. Thankfully though Kim is one of those amazing multi-taskers that many of us aspire to be. She’s had plenty of practice, before joining us she was simultaneously Mum to her daughter and 3 boys, a business owner AND she was studying to obtain her accounting qualifications! Interestingly, Kim has an intriguing pastime that gives her the ability to focus on one tiny little thing at a time, to the exclusion of all else – shooting! Apparently it has nothing to do with having 4 teenage kids under the one roof.

It’s a hat trick! BRT residents love their golf and recently hosted their annual Golf Competition against neighbouring GL Bremmer Waters golfers. oama has a very active social community and they recently hosted a Pink Ladies Luncheon

that RAISED OVER $800 FOR CANCER RESEARCH. Many of the ladies in attendance have unfortunately been affected affected by cancer, nonetheless Tracey said it was a lovely day and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Anzac Day was a big event with breakfast followed by a flag raising ceremony and then a sausage sizzle for lunch. Tracey and Leigh have provided us with some fabulous photos of one of their residents John Munroe. John fought in the Korean War and took along a very special ‘Lest We Forget’ cross, it’s made from a rifle used in the Korean War. However like so many of his contemporaries, John doesn’t speak about his time at war so it’s not known if it’s his own rifle – regardless, it’s a very special piece of memorabilia.Check out page 4 for a photo of the special cross.

also celebrated Anzac Day. CM’s Karl & Debbie went along

to the local celebrations to support 2 of their residents and thoroughly enjoyed

themselves. Attached are photos of Karl assisting Tommy Carlon (WWII) out of the vehicle after the march. Tommy will be immortalized at the Canberra War Memorial later this years with a photo placed in the museum. I’m reliably informed that The Pines residents love any excuse for a dress up! Their recent 70’s disco night was a blast and they can’t wait to drag the bling out of the closet for the July ‘Hollywood Trivia’ night!

IN FOCUS

HEALTH

Fitness And how to start a ‘rest of my life’ habit...By Karyn Duel I recently celebrated one of those ‘milestone’ birthdays,

bicep exercises, but focus people ..... focus!

you know the one where you get that special little gift of

3. MAKE IT AN ADVENTURE!

a bowel cancer screening kit from the government – I bet posties everywhere rejoiced when they discovered the special little parcels they’d be carrying! Anyway, it got me to thinking that perhaps it’s time to start some kind of fitness regime before it’s all too late. So here’s what some research suggested I should do to ensure it becomes a ‘rest of my life’ habit.

1. MAKE IT FUN! Getting fit should be a part of the day that you look forward to, so do something that you love and it won’t become a chore.

Something like stand up paddle

boarding is excellent for core strength, it also works on those flabby arms, legs and tummies – as an added bonus, should you fall off in the middle of winter you might even turn into an Olympic swimmer or gymnast trying to get out of the water!

2. MAKE IT SOCIAL! We’re all so busy that often it’s easy to let your personal relationships slide (Facebook doesn’t count!), why not stay connected with friends and loved ones by exercising together. What’s more, by having shared goals it will motivate you to keep moving more frequently and purposefully than you might do on your own. Or it could see you heading to the pub and simply doing some

20

INSIDE GATEWAY

Hands up if the idea of heading to a gym bores you rigid!

Think outside

the box, look up your local council website and see if someone is holding yoga on the beach, or perhaps cash in some of that leave and

“Getting fit should be a part of the day that you look forward to” head to India on a yoga tour! Sign up for a fun run .... or walk for charity. Some masochists out there might even give Tough Mudder a go (you must send pics!)!

4. EAT HEALTHY! Apparently just because one is now exercising doesn’t mean wine and cheese should be on the menu for dinner every night sigh. It’s all about balance they say. So make sure you’re getting your daily quota of fruit and veg, cut down on sugar (it’s the latest killer apparently), eat some oily fish and try to make sure your serves of red meat are slightly smaller than a Tyrannosaurus Rex steak.

5. STAY POSITIVE! Studies have shown that ‘older’ adults are more likely to keep exercising if they have an overall positive attitude toward life and physical activity. So create a fitness plan that makes you feel good and keeps you feeling motivated to go back. You could also try singing ‘Always look on the bright side of life’.

Disclaimer: The writer Karyn Duel is not and never has been a health professional and the views contained above are her own. Please be advised that she is a couch potato and has rarely exercised in her life, and whilst she is committed to give exercise a go it is nonetheless advisable that you make your own enquiries when it comes to health matters!
