By(Justin(Skinner(X(17(Sept(2014( http://www.insidetoronto.com/newsXstory/4864224XtorontoXgarlicXfestivalXsetXforXseptX21/( ( Festival(is(brainchild(of(Cabbagetown(resident(Peter(McClusky( In(the(mind(of(Cabbagetown(resident(Peter( McClusky,( garlic’s( reputation( as( a( cause( of( bad(breath(has(given(the(bulb(a(bad(rap.( McClusky( is( the( founder( of( the( Toronto( Garlic( Festival,( which( will( return( for( its( fourth(year(this(September.( He( earned( his( love( of( garlic( purely( by( accident.( In( 2009,( he( decided( to( indulge( a( longXstanding( interest( in( farming( and( volunteered( and( interned( with( various( farmers(outside(the(city.( He( turned( to( garlic( after( one( of( those( farmers( gave( him( a( quarter( acre( plot( of( his( own,(but(that(bore(little(fruit(–(or(anything(else,(for(that(matter.( “I( didn’t( grow( anything( I( planted( that( summer( and( didn’t( have( anything( to( show( for( it,( but( a( couple(of(pumpkins,”(he(said.(“I(thought(‘what(can(I(plant(in(September(to(make(something(of( this(year’(and(the(two(things(I(knew(I(could(plant(were(tulips(or(garlic.”( A(couple(of(the(farmers(with(whom(McClusky(had(worked(sent(him(some(bulbs(and(when(that( crop(proved(successful,(his(love(for(garlic(bloomed.( Still,( while( he( was( able( to( grow( the( bulbous( plant,( he( found( he( had( few( opportunities( to( actually(do(much(with(what(he(grew.( “In(early(2011,(because(I(was(growing(my(own(garlic,(I(started(to(ask(myself(how(I(could(sell(it,”( he(said.(“That(was(when(I(decided(to(start(up(my(own(festival.”( McClusky( noted( most( people’s( knowledge( of( garlic( does( not( extend( much( past( the( grocery( store( variety.( While( that( is( obviously( the( most( common,( he( pointed( out( there( are( seven( varieties(of(garlic(and(hundreds(of(strains(thereof.(

Hey(Guys,( Today(my(boyfriend(and(I(braved(the(rainy(weather(to(go(to(the(Toronto(Garlic(Festival,(held(at( the(Evergreen(Brickworks(Farmers(Market(to(explore(the(varieties(of(garlic(that(grow(in(Ontario( and(stink(up(our(breath(with(some(garlicky(delicacies.( The(garlic(we(saw(at(the(festival(included(some(of(the(varieties(below:( (
