Hello,

I’m Gauri, a Textile designer, a Youth for India Fellow and a naive Illustrator.

I create surface pattern designs for lifestyle brands to make their products look eye-catching and give them character. My patterns are versatile and can be used on products across various segments.

Design Process

Motif: Indian Chintz Method: Digital

I work with both traditional and digital methods. For digital, I use various software such as Procreate, Illustrator, and Photoshop, depending on the complexity of the pattern.

For me, sketching is an integral part of any collection. Before I start any print or collection, I create a motif bank. I draw from both observation and intuition. This helps me in multiple ways, the foremost being when I’m stuck, I can just refer to the motif bank.

Next, I combine different motifs to create rough layouts. This helps me determine the composition, size of motifs, and what to place with what.

Colour blocking is the most important step in my process. It’s a total game-changer and can save a lot of time in the long run. I experiment with background only, line drawing only, a combination of both, or multiple colours.

I strive to be flexible with color layout, as there is always a chance of change in the end.

I enjoy drawing women around me. Putting focus on the things that women do at home that aren’t seen or appreciated or acknowledged. This is how they keep the society moving by doing things that no body sees them doing.
