experience

Curious to solve world's problems ,and create meaningful experiences through products that I design. I believe every product should have a purpose beyond profit margin. Design should eliminate wasteful consumption and it is therefore the responsibility of a designer to lead the world towards a sustainable future. My portfolio spans across projects in Product design,Industrial Design,Biomedical devices design,Ergonomics, New product development, etc

Luggage design that makes it easy to ascend stairs

Individual Project

flexion moment

During load lifting, a acts on the body. It is the product of weight of the object and distance between the center of gravity of the body and the load. So, as distance of the load from the body increase, the total load acting on the lumbar curve also increases. Therefore the muscle power required is also more. During lifting, both compression and shear occur on the spine. This creates back pain and associated problems.

product study and insights Three wheeled stair climbing luggage uses three separate wheels with a central rotating axis that negotiates each stair with rotation of individual wheel and an effective rotation of the three combined to achieve one rotation along the central axis. Patents in this design existed from the 60s Another solution is using a conveyor belt to climb the stairs. Usually, they are attached to trolley bag to facilitate motion while dragging through stairs. Another solution is to use a wheel which is bigger than the stair itself, so that stairs will not be a hindrance comparatively, All of these solutions eliminate the need of lifting while climbing so that flexion moment is eliminated

Drawbacks of the existing solutions Bulky

Moving parts increases chance of failures It user feels psychologically uncomfortable because of the “designed for disabled” kind of feel the products give

Conclusions from product study > Flexion moment can be eliminated if the weight is placed on ground plus the obvious advantage of using lesser number of muscles. >There is a need for finding a more compact and simple solution

Posture should be better than normal luggage Stackable while traveling

Maneuverable through different surfaces Rugged Safety, theft proof

Easy to be carried through stairs

Press the top button from sides to release the locking. Then rotate or slide to change the position. Fully rotate the slides to the sides to open the luggage

concept ďŹ nalization

This project was an attempt to solve an every day problem with minimal intervention in the overall usage scenario. The solution should be intuitive and serve the purpose without much extra ďŹ ttings.

usage scenario

1.

2.

The guide rails will be in extended condition while dragging up stairs.

After use press the top slider to slide it back to closed position

visualization Three colour options were chosen. Peach , Neptune blue green and sunset yellow

carbon ďŹ bre rails are used for better elasticity, hardness and impact absorption

hdpe body

The rails are kept at an inclined angle so that when kept on a at surface, the handle reches the hand of the user Anodized metal handles

prototyping and testing A frugal prototype was made of MDF to test the usage scenario and proof of concept

The prototype was carried up and down the stairs and a posture analysis was carried out. Prototype was ďŹ tted with a normal handle as well bending handle, so that difference in usage between the two could be noted. The posture of the user was recorded with in photographs to analyze static posture

Better Posture Less strain Awkward Position Eliminated Less time to climb Less grip strength required Only one hand required

Design brief - To design a better lemon squeezer, which is easy to use and requires less force to operate

anatomy of a lemon Skin (Flavedo + Albedo)

Sections/Carpels

Vesicles

Why a new lemon squeezer? Some types of lemons have thick, skins which make them difďŹ cult to squeeze Juice splashes out while squeezing

Juice

Seeds have to be separated from the juice Juice comes in contact with hands Lemons come in different sizes

Ease of squeezing Saving lemon for later Value for money

High end gadget collectors Premium appeal Unique operation Choice of material Mechanical art

market segmentation

Who wants a new lemon squeezer?

product study and observations Almost all of the designs cut the lemon vertically Commercial machines make use of levers whereas domestic appliances make use of reaming action Cutting the lemon is a prerequisite to operate . Widely used juicer uses second class lever principle to achieve squeezing

Vesticles deformed to extract juice

Juice stored inside the vesicles and force is used to defom and rupture them.

concept sketches

Blades expand internally to cut the vesticles

Lever mechanism Expanding diad mechanism

Blades act similar to diads

Shutter mechanism Screw mechanism 4 bar mechanism Compliant mechanisms

blades buckle to achieve linear motion and radial motion Product Requirements DEMANDS Force required should be low Time taken to squeeze should be low Lemon juice should not wet the user’s hands WISHES Save the extra juice for later Cutting and squeezing lemons should be done on one action It should be able to squeeze the skin too

concept based on pulley mechanism

rope passing through internal pulleys to reduce effort

designed to hang at street stores

four bar mechanism used for more arm force and reduced hand effort

selected concept RADIALLY EXPANDING

MECHANISM BASED ON BUCKLING OF METAL.

DOES NOT USE CRUSHING FORCE TO EXTRACT JUICE. THE VESTIBULES OF LEMON ARE CUT USING SHARP BLADES, TO EXTRACT JUICE.

THE PROFILE OF THE BLADE TRACES THE CENTRE TO PERIMETER OF THE LEMON , CUTTING THE VESTIBULES

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE METALLIC BLADE ARE HIGH ELASTIC RANGE, NON CORRODING,

1 Cut the lemon at top, and

insert the blade to rupture central vestibular connection lemon

2 Rotate and slightly press

the prismatic joint to expand the blades and further rupture the vestibules

3 Transfer the juice to a plate

prototyping and testing A prototype was made to test the feasibi;ity of the concept and was found to be working

creation of adam interaction design/ installation design

Creation of Adam is an interactive installation designed in collaboration with Nobi Mohanta to be displayed in RIPPLES 2019. It is based on Michael Angelo’s painting of the same name. This project was an attempt to bridge the gap between art and technology and utilise simple technology to create meaningful interactive experiance for the user. On touching the painting’s finger the painting comes to life (mechanical heart starts beating), thereby symbolically recreating the classic painting

Touch the hand of Adam to give him your life ! His heart beats according to your heart beat!!

HEART MODEL

GEARED MOTOR

PULSE SENSOR

A pulse sensor is used to measure the pulse of the person and heart beat is then mapped to rpm of geared DC motor, so thet heart beat of the painting is proportional to heart beat of the person

The smart bottle

design brief Design a smart water bottle which works as a connected device for smart phones, smart watches, ďŹ tness bands, and smart home products like Amazon Echo and Google Home. The user is an adult who does desk-based work, and uses a smart watch and a smartphone to track day to day activities like sleep, heart rate, etc through the ďŹ tness band, and records calories intake via a smart phone-based app.
