Design is solving problems…..In a beautiful way

Mechanical engineering graduate with a passion for art and design Hello ! My name is Gautham Vijayan. I’m an engineering graduate and I’ve I completed my B.tech degree from SCMS School of Engineering and technology, Eranakulam. I have also completed an industrial training on CAM and die at Steel and Industrial Forgings, Athani. Design to me, is more than solving problems. I believe the beauty of design lies in its simplicity and functionality. A good design is never complete without aesthetics and practicality. A designer must step into the shoes of the user, manufacturer, salesperson and almost everyone involved in the process, which makes the job challenging as well as rewarding.

The concept is to create a bag with rails that can be sild through the stairs. This means the user only has to overcome the cosine component of the weight and frictional force, and therefore reduction in effort is possible.
TROLLEY BAG FOR EVERYONE Problem : A large part of the population(including elders, children and some women) find it difficult to carry trolley bags up the stairs as they are often heavy and bulky. This is an attempt to make trolley bags accessible to everybody, making their journeys happier
IDEATION
Material: Carbon fiber was chosen as the material for the rails because of its strength, high elasticity(for shock absorption, The rails was tilted at a small angle for easy hold The handle has a full 360degree rotation for ergonomics
Existing solutions :
Carbon fibre rails
Using a conventional stair climbing trolley makes the user feel alienated from the mainstream. It also makes them more conscious of their disability, which is not good.
Full 360 degree rotation of handle
Colour choices
Complete rotation of handle for flexible handling
Inclined rail for level hold
Mode of carrying trolley up the stairs

Folding stand which can be operated with feet
COFFEE MUG INCLUSIVE OF THE NEEDS OF THE ELDERLY With a collapsible dual handle Problem identification: Elders, and people with unsteady hands find one handled coffee mugs difficult to handle. The challenge was to design a coffee mug which can be used by elders as well as others, without compromising in the aesthetics EXISTING SOLUTIONS Double handled coffee mugs are an exclusive product for the elderly people
ideations
Final solution A dual handle design is proposed in which one handle collapses into the other when not in need The second handle is fitted onto a groove in the mug. When not in use it can be collapsed inside the main handle to conceal
Twist the handle gently to reveal a second handle

STACKABLE SEMINAR CHAIR Problem definition : In many institutions, seminar halls are often used for multiple purposes like functions, celebrations, etc. In these situations, traditional seminar chairs make a hassle because they have to be transported to another place to make up room in the hall. By making the chair stackable ,we are able to solve the problem of transportation of chairs
Ideation
SLIDELOCK ROTRY HINGE
WRITING PAD
THE WRITING PAD FORMS THE TOP PART OF THE BACK WHILE NOT IN USE. WHILE WRITING, IT CAN BE PULLED DOWN, UNLOCKING THE SLIDE LOCK
SAVING MATERIAL Traditional mouthwash bottles either use none or use mini pump mechanism to get the exact of liquid. Thus manufacturing cost of bottle increases
This design eliminates the need to use extra materials in a bottle.
Existing designs
Pump used in some mouthwash bottles
Big cap design
1.
Tilt the bottle

Thin neck design suitable for blocking the flow
2.
Close the neck with your thumb

COMPASS THAT SHOWS THE RADIUS
DIAL POINTER
Measuring with a ruler every time you want to draw a circle is not a very elegant process. What if it can be done with the compass itself? The R Compass is measured against different radiuses and these readings are marked on the dial itself of the compass. So next time you just have to check your compass for the radius!
HOLE IN LEG TO SEE THE RADIUS
AS THE LEG IS PULLED, THE READING ON THE DIAL CHANGES TO THE CURRENT RADIUS
