As part of a master's design studio, in Tongji University, we have developed a urban design guideline (Hongkou Ecological Spine) to inject vibrancy to the currently divisive waterway.
Due to Shanghai’s unique location, it is sensitive to sea level rise and land subsidence. As a result, flood walls in Shanghai could be as high as 6m. The waterway could be seen as a divisive line cutting through the city.
The Ecological Spine of Hongkou envisions to be the new identity for Hongkou District - one that is active (programs and activities), vibrant (engaging people of all age), clean (a unpolluted waterway) and green (various types of green spaces).
