OF ITI THE I M SH F O O D A N D FA R

WELCOME TO RED TRACTOR Welcome to the first edition of Red Tractor Food Heroes, a celebration of household brands, foodservice operators and food manufacturers that represent the rigorous standards that British Red Tractor Assured food and drink is produced to. The Red Tractor logo is seen by the majority of UK consumers as a signpost for responsibly produced, quality British food and drink. More than 7 out of 10 UK main shoppers recognise and trust the Red Tractor logo1 and its standards form the basis of buying and sourcing specifications for major UK supermarkets, household brands and restaurant chains. Red Tractor is a whole-chain assurance scheme, meaning that only products that have been farmed, transpor ted, produced and packed in the UK to our required standards can hold the Red Tractor logo. Our standards are developed using consumer insight, the latest science, evidence, best practice and legislation that cover animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection. 1

We maintain those standards by working with over 350 independent inspectors, to ensure the most robust assessments possible. Red Tractor is unique in both the breadth and depth of its standards and the scale of agricultural sectors it covers. Red Tractor is extremely proud to be able to call over 650 businesses Red Tractor licensees, sourcing Red Tractor product and utilising the Red Tractor logo. These organisations represent the very best of UK food and drink production, from iconic household brands to entrepreneurial businesses. We thank them all for their continued suppor t of Red Tractor and British food and drink.

BUILDING TRUST REASSURING UK CONSUMERS Since its formation in 2000, Red Tractor’s key purpose has been to reassure consumers that they are buying responsibly produced, quality food and drink, whatever their budget. UK consumers now trust British produced food and drink more than products from any other country1 and we are proud of the role Red Tractor has played in achieving this. Since 2018, Red Tractor has invested in a significant annual TV marketing campaign, designed to communicate the value of the Red Tractor logo to consumers. Our consumer research demonstrates a clear and positive relationship between UK consumers’ understanding of Red Tractor and the likelihood of them buying Red Tractor Assured products. The 2023 campaign has succeeded in gaining an additional 1.2 million UK main shoppers who state that they see the Red Tractor logo as an independent marque that they can trust2.

IT’S NOT JUST THE FOOD THAT’S LEGENDARY, THERE’S SPICE IN EVERYTHING. What makes your brand a food hero?

What are your biggest challenges?

Flame-grilled, juicy, spicy... there’s a reason Nando’s chicken is legendary. We marinate our chicken – on or off the bone – in PERi-PERi for 24 hours before it’s basted. All our sauces, bastes and marinades are made with fresh, real ingredients and have no artificial flavours or colourants.

Like many others, one of our main challenges is supply chain disruption. We aim to build resilient and sustainable relationships across our supplier base and have learnt a lot these past few years.

What is unique about your business?

We work in close partnership with all our British suppliers. As a leading restaurant group, with 475 restaurants across the UK and Ireland, we have a responsibility to ensure that every aspect of how we source our chicken is done in the best possible way. We invest in new technology and also take part in studies to reduce the carbon impact of chicken feed. But it doesn’t stop there. We’re signatories of the Better Chicken Commitment and are working with Compassion in World Farming, FAI Farms and the Soil Association to evolve and improve chicken welfare.

Born in South Africa with a blend of Portuguese and British culture. It all started in Mozambique, home of the hot sun, rich soil... and African Bird’s Eye Chillies. Also known as PERi-PERi. Small but mighty, these chillies have been used for centuries in local Mozambiquan cooking. The Portuguese then added a squeeze of lemon and kick of garlic to make the first PERi-PERi sauce. And it wasn’t long before two friends in Johannesburg came to experience the taste of PERi-PERi chicken and Nando’s was born. Why do your customers love you? It’s not just the food that’s legendary, there’s spice in everything. From music to ar t and even the napkins. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, catching up with friends or feasting with your family, Nando’s is an uplifting experience that keeps you coming back for more.
