Attorney: Transgender inmate sexually assaulted again Latest in a series of incidents with Ashley Diamond

TIMELINE

February 2015 The SPLC files a federal lawsuit against the GDC claiming that Ashley Diamond had been denied medical treatment and had been sexually assaulted by other inmates at Georgia State Prison.

By PATRICK SAUNDERS Ashley Diamond, the transgender Georgia inmate who filed a federal lawsuit against the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC), says that she has been sexually assaulted again. The revelation comes following a July 5 court filing in Diamond’s case against the state, which began in February when the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed suit saying she had been denied hormone therapy, sexually assaulted by other inmates and tormented by inmates and staff. This latest filing states that on or about June 10, Diamond was in the process of being transported from Rutledge State Prison to Augusta Medical Center for a medical appointment. To facilitate the trip, she was temporarily held at Georgia State Prison, the same prison she was transferred from in May over safety concerns. Diamond alleges that the inmate who was in the holding cell with her on June 10 sexually assaulted her. According to Diamond, the perpetrator threatened her on the way back to Rutledge State Prison, warning her not to say anything about the attack. She reported the incident to GDC officials upon her return, and the alleged perpetrator was transferred to another facility on June 29. Investigators continue to look into the incident and a Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) complaint has been filed. “What this means is Miss Diamond is still not out of harm’s way,” says the SPLC’s Chinyere Ezie, lead attorney in Diamond’s lawsuit. “We’re hoping that the court will call the parties for a hearing sooner rather than later. We are concerned about Miss Diamond’s current status. The court is in the best position to begin to address some of her concerns.” Retaliation claims made against warden Diamond, a Rome, Georgia, native who has performed as a drag queen in Atlanta, also alleges that Rutledge State Prison Warden Shay Hatcher, who is a defendant in the case, shared

Early April 2015 The U.S. Department of Justice issues a statement in support of Diamond, saying that denying her hormone treatments is unconstitutional. Elton John and R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe also issued a joint statement, demanding justice for Diamond and for all transgender inmates in Georgia. information from the PREA complaint about the June 10 incident with other inmates. Her attorneys claim Hatcher did so in retaliation against Diamond for filing the lawsuit. “We understand the recent disclosure of the substance of her sexual assault allegations to be an instance of retaliatory conduct,” Ezie says. “PREA is very clear that sexual assault allegations are to be treated confidentially. In spite of that, the warden disclosed the identity of the person who Miss Diamond made the allegations about to other prisoners, which has led to daily threats and being called a snitch, which puts her in a great deal of danger in the prison environment.” The July 5 court filing cites a June 29 incident in which an inmate reportedly told Diamond to recant the sexual assault complaint “or else,” and incidents on July 5 and 7 where groups of inmates confronted her, calling her “a snitch.” Diamond says the threats are ongoing and that she is afraid to leave her dormitory, including for meals, without an escort. Hatcher denies the allegations made against him, and GDC officials did not return a request for comment on the matter. ‘Take that garbage off your face’ On July 20, Diamond’s attorneys were

contacted by an unnamed individual who claims they witnessed Diamond being put into solitary confinement that afternoon for wearing makeup. They are still gathering details on the incident, but Diamond, who was wearing lipstick, foundation and eyeliner, was reportedly told by a guard “to take that garbage off your face” and she refused. Diamond’s attorneys say they plan on filing additional papers with the court as early as this week with details of the incident. Meanwhile, they’re staying focused on one goal in particular—getting Diamond out of Rutledge State Prison. “The Georgia Department of Corrections should follow the federal PREA guidelines. They outline a very detailed procedure which is currently the law that calls for individualized determination for where to place a transgender inmate,” Ezie says. “We’ve really yet to see any evidence that this procedure has been followed in Georgia. Rutledge is an inappropriate facility because half the defendants reside there.” As to why Diamond hasn’t been placed in a women’s prison, Ezie says they are asking themselves the same question. “The federal PREA guidelines are like-

Mid-April 2015 The GDC restores Diamond’s hormone treatments, although Diamond’s attorneys voice concerns that the dosage appears to be too low to be therapeutic. Late April 2015 U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell denies Diamond’s request to be transferred to a lower-security prison for her safety. May 2015 GDC officials agree to transfer Diamond from Georgia State Prison to Rutledge State Prison, a medium-security facility in Columbus. July 2015 Diamond alleges that she was sexually assaulted in a holding cell at Georgia State Prison, a stopover on the way from Rutledge to a medical appointment in Augusta. wise clear that prisons should not have a blanket policy of where to house transgender female or male prisoners,” she says. “Obviously from Miss Diamond’s story alone, there are reasons to have concerns about the wisdom of that process.”

Political newcomer takes on RFRA Lesbian family members influence Taylor Bennett’s House District 80 run By PATRICK SAUNDERS Heads didn’t so much turn as snap when the results came back in the July 14 race for House District 80, and sitting on top was Taylor Bennett, the 29-year-old former Georgia Tech quarterback who is now a labor and employment lawyer. Bennett, a Democrat in his first run for office, bested three Republicans and will have a tough fight on his hands when he faces former Brookhaven mayor J. Max Davis in an August 11 runoff. Should he prevail, he plans on fighting something that’s caused an uproar in each of the last two legislative sessions—state Sen. Josh McKoon’s (R-Columbus) so-called “religious freedom” bill, which many believe will lead to more anti-LGBT discrimination. Bennett has made the issue the centerpiece of his campaign, and not just because he’s an employment lawyer who has represented people fired for their sexual orientation or gender identity—both his mother and sister are gay. “As a labor and employment attorney and obviously my personal connection to the issue, watching the Georgia legislature literally try to figure out ways to discriminate, especially to the LGBT community, I didn’t want to sit by and just watch this unfold in front of me,” Bennett tells Georgia Voice. “I’m thinking, is my mom going to be able to come to Georgia and have lunch with her son and have to face discrimination to come see me? That was something that got at me pretty deep.” The House District 80 seat carries with it some history as it relates to the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) fight. State Rep. Mike Jacobs (R-Brookhaven),

who held the seat until being appointed by Governor Nathan Deal as a judge on the DeKalb County State Court earlier this year, amended the bill in this year’s session to add an anti-discrimination clause. The amendment effectively killed the bill, but McKoon has vowed to propose it again in 2016. “We need to ensure that the next representative from HD 80 is equally committed to fighting discrimination, especially as it relates to the LGBT community. Taylor Bennett is that person,” says Jeff Graham, executive director of Georgia Equality, who endorsed Bennett. “His mother is a lesbian and he understands firsthand the struggles of the LGBT community here in Georgia.” Bennett also confirmed his support for a hate crimes law and an anti-discrimination bill that would cover employment, housing and public accommodations.

Georgia senators help defeat LGBT student protection amendment Vote comes as GLSEN releases report on anti-bullying policies By PATRICK SAUNDERS Seven Republicans crossed the aisle to vote in favor of the Student Nondiscrimination Act (SNDA), but Georgia’s senators stayed put as the amendment to an education bill fell eight votes short of the 60-vote threshold required for passage. The failure of the amendment, which would have provided nondiscrimination and anti-bullying protections for LGBT children in schools, comes just as an LGBT education organization releases a report on the lack of protections for LGBT students across the country. The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) released “From Statehouse to Schoolhouse: Anti-Bullying Policy Efforts in U.S. States and School Districts” on July 15, one day after SNDA failed in the U.S. Senate.

Johnny Isakson voted against the Student Nondiscrimination Act on July 14. (Official photos)

The report showed that nearly three in 10 (29.5 percent) U.S. school districts do not have an anti-bullying policy. And of the 70.5 percent of U.S. school districts with anti-bullying policies:

• Fewer than half (42.6 percent) enumerate protections for students based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation. • A minority (14.1 percent) enumerates protections for students based on their gender identity and/or gender expression. • About a quarter (26.8 percent) requires professional development for staff to address bullying and harassment in their schools. • Fewer than one-third (30.3 percent) stipulate accountability for incidents of bullying and harassment to the district and/or state. • Only 3 percent of district policies include all three elements—LGBT enumeration, professional development requirements, and accountability stipulations. The report also found that 75 percent of Georgia school districts have anti-bullying policies, but only 1.7 percent have policies enumerating LGBT protections. The national average was 9.9 percent with LGBT protections. “The critical point is that without federal protections, states like Georgia that are

unlikely in the near future to pass state-level protections will be forced to fight battles for LGBTQ student rights at a slower, district-by-district pace,” says Emily Brown, field organizer at Georgia Equality. “This will negatively affect those students in small, rural districts that may have small numbers of LGBTQ students and who lack access to gaystraight alliances, LGBTQ community centers or other affirming community resources.” Georgia Equality will continue to work with school districts across the state to enact anti-bullying policies that enumerate sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, as well as partner with the Georgia Safe Schools Coalition and GLSEN in their efforts. “These programs will always be necessary, but without federal or state policies or laws that protect LGBTQ students, they are mere stop-gap measures,” Brown says. The offices of Sen. Johnny Isakson and Sen. David Perdue did not respond to a request for comment about their votes on SNDA.

NEWSBRIEFS Vandals deface LGBT church in Augusta, Georgia Vandals spray-painted an LGBT church in downtown Augusta with Bible passages and suggestions that LGBT people burn. The incident occurred on July 21, as first reported by the Augusta Chronicle. “Burn Leviticus 18:22 Lies” was spray-painted across the front doors of Metropolitan Community Church of Our Redeemer, while another passage, Leviticus 18:20, was spray-painted on the front steps with the words “You’ll Burn.” The church’s pastor, Rick Sosbe, was part of the first gay couple to receive a marriage license in Richmond County following the June 26 U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down same-sex marriage bans nationwide. The incident occurred roughly three weeks after a rainbow flag was stolen from the front of the church. “I was angry,” Sosbe told the Augusta Chronicle. “I was very sad and I thought, ‘Just why?’ To me, it seems so interesting that they’re saying on there that you’ll burn – in other words saying ‘You’ll burn in hell,’ I’m sure – and quoting scripture. Is that what Christianity – right-wing, fundamentalist Christianity – has come to?” Sosbe and his partner, Michael Rehn, married on June 30. He said this was the first time an anti-LGBT incident has happened at the church and that he plans on discussing the installation of security cameras when the church’s board next meets. Judge quits marrying couples in protest of Supreme Court decision A magistrate judge in central Georgia says he would rather not perform any weddings at all than be required to perform weddings for same-sex couples, so he’s out of the marriage business. According to 13WMAZ, Dodge County Magistrate Judge Lonnie T. Parkerson made the announcement during a wedding for an opposite-sex couple, saying he was moved to do so after two women came in to get married. “I want y’a’ll to know you’re the last wedding that I’m ever gonna do,” Parkerson says in a video sent to the station. “They were already scheduled so I’ll do them too. I just can’t do it the other way, y’all, it ain’t right. The Bible explains it just like that [snaps)] what marriage is. That is a marriage right there [points to couple getting married]. What came in my office the other day was

Dodge County Magistrate Judge Lonnie T. Parkerson says he will no longer perform marriages of any kind because of the U.S. Supreme Court striking down same-sex marriage bans. (Screenshot via 13WMAZ)

two ladies, it’s not a marriage.” Parkerson, who is a banker by profession and in his third term as magistrate, confirmed his decision to 13WMAZ in a statement, saying in part, “I’ve been approached about a wedding I performed yesterday and about two weeks ago I had some people come in the office and asked me to do a wedding and I’m not doing weddings any more since the Supreme Court passed the law that they did.” Bill to ‘protect’ clergy from performing same-sex marriages House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) has told his fellow House Republicans that he wants them to adopt a “pastor’s protection act” ensuring no faith leader can be forced to perform a same-sex wedding—even though clergy already appear to have that protection. The comments came at a caucus meeting on July 11 in Jekyll Island, according to the AJC. Ralston said he planned on advocating for the bill when the 2016 legislative session

begins in January. However, it appears that faith leaders already have those protections under the U.S. Constitution. “The First Amendment already protects the right of pastors to decline solemnizing any marriage inconsistent with the tenets of their faith. Obergefell did not change that fundamental principle,” out constitutional scholar Anthony Kreis tells Georgia Voice. “It was always permissible, for example, for a rabbi to refuse to perform a marriage for an interfaith couple notwithstanding their constitutional right to marry civilly.” Georgia Voice found instances in the past of faith leaders refusing to perform interracial marriages as well, and doing so without consequence. And the Family Research Council, who are designated as an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, have a page on their website dedicated to assuring members of the clergy and other concerned parties.

OUT IN THE WILD

By Simon Williamson

The courage of coming out Simon Williamson lives with his federally-recognized spouse in the wild yonder of Newton County. Follow him on Twitter at @simonwillo. We all had to be brave. Caitlyn Jenner has given the country yet another opportunity to declare who is not a hero in relation to the military, and the country has responded in the best way it knows how, furiously, across any Facebook page within typing distance. Nonetheless, since Jenner got under the skin of angry folks by daring to be called courageous by other people, this perpetual whining has shown the greater public may be on the side of LGBT+ folks when it comes to marriage (and the ridiculous legal effects attached to it) but woefully ignorant of the pain and danger of living a life in secret, which is ultimately something all of us who fit within our abbreviation have undergone.

“Part of our quest for perfection, or projecting the perfect image, is it provides us with a weapon. In a world that despises us for being black and gay, maybe we think if we are just as good, if not better, we have a chance. Maybe we think only through perfection, can we be loved.” Atlanta is the city of perfect black gay men, or rather the illusion of perfection. Perfect bodies. Perfect jobs. Perfect homes. Perfect cars. Perfect clothes. Perfect credentials. Perfect boyfriends. And if you’re not yet perfect, you better be working toward it, always. But the thing with unattainable ideals is that you eventually discover that they are unattainable for a reason, which is why I think some of us become very disillusioned and experience significant despair along the way. Not all of us are driven toward perfection. Of course not. I imagine most of us just try to live our lives the best we can. But like a shadow, this ideal of perfection still follows us 14 Outspoken July 24, 2015

Even in families where our incongruency with the basic gender binary has been perfectly acceptable, there was risk in our decisions to come out. Because, like a top bottoming for the first time, once out there is no going back in. No one knows for sure that Parent A and/or Parent B will be fully supportive, and anyone who has ever attended a school with pubescent or older peers will be able to relay the horror of being untypical. Horror. Worse than not being able to show off your brand new 9-months-of-taste-free-food abs because you stupidly got a sunburn. Being forced to hide one’s self from the world is a cruel and unusual punishment, and is only relatable if you have had to go through it. There is the very real danger

of anyone finding out and hating you, or abusing you, and in far too many cases, killing you. And there is the perpetual guardedness you have to carry around, which, in my case, wore me to the emotional bone. I have another story about an emotional bone, but I was drunk and he was so pretty. And we had just seen “The Fault In Our Stars.” Back to the topic at hand: just because Caitlyn Jenner might be a Hollywood celebrity, cashing in on her fame, doesn’t mean she was spared the pain and paranoia so many of us have endured. I was all teary and emotional for months before I came out at age 19. I don’t even want to think about what it must be like hiding yourself into your 60s. It is also outrageously impor-

“Channel 2’s comment section might be whining about connoting Jenner and courage, but anyone in our family will be able to tell you it was never easy. It might be nothing like fighting in the military. But it was fucking terrifying.” tant for trans people everywhere to know there are trans people everywhere. Over the last few years we have had Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono and Janet Mock light up our screens, and show the world that trans people exist, and now we can add Jenner to that powerful list. As a young gay man, I decided to come out because the winner of a British singing competition did. Don’t ever doubt the value and sincerity of a potent symbol to people who are struggling to deal with what they are hiding. Channel 2’s comment section might be whining about connoting Jenner and courage, but anyone in our family will be able to tell you it was never easy. It might be nothing like fighting in the military. But it was fucking terrifying.

THE ICONOCLAST

By Charles Stephens

Being thrice as good Charles Stephens is the Director of Counter Narrative and co-editor of ‘Black Gay Genius: Answering Joseph Beam’s Call.’ around. It haunts us. It’s a voice we internalize, a voice that is very much rooted in the racist, masculinist, heterosexist culture we live in, and survive. A voice that Toni Morrison once described as the “master narrative.” Part of our quest for perfection, or projecting the perfect image, is it provides us with a weapon. In a world that despises us for being black and gay, maybe we think if we are just as good, if not better, we have a chance. Maybe we think only through perfection, can we be loved. As little boys we imagine that if we are just good enough, we can be accepted. If we are just smart enough we can deflect the disappointment of our parents, once they

discover our sing-song voices or the slight swish in our walk. We can hide behind our accomplishments: grades, extracurricular activities, awards. When I was in high school for example, all of the other black gay boys I knew were overachievers. It’s often how we found each other. Then we would come out, often into black gay men’s communities where we struggled again not so much for acceptance but for recognition and affirmation. The most painful thing is to be around other black gay men and feel completely invisible. Structural violence isn’t just about downward social mobility, it’s also about upward social mobility. Both are connected to the

same system. This notion, which is in fact a reality, that we have to work twice as hard and be twice as good in a culture that despises us is very much linked to structural violence. And if you are black and gay, you have to be thrice as good, a kind of tripleconsciousness. Black gay men are far from the only group that seeks to use social status symbols as weapons and for protection. But I often wonder if for us, the consequences of such a course of action, are more severe. No matter how perfect we attempt to become, we will never embody the ideal that these notions of perfection are based on. And so perfection for us is the sword that cuts both ways. www.thegeorgiavoice.com

LANDMARK DINER Last year’s runner-up is this year’s top vote getter as Landmark Diner (www.landmarkdiner.com) beats out the competition. Its motto is “Where Stars Meet At Night” and this is the place to be to soak up some booze or cure the munchies after partying all night, whether a Saturday or a Tuesday. Open 24 hours, the diner’s menu includes dozens of dishes covering everything from egg platters to a Thanksgiving-inspired oven-roasted turkey platter to Greek specialties such as Greek Souviaki (two skewers of marinated pork), Moussaka (eggplant with sliced potatoes and seasoned ground beef) and, of course, Spanakopita. HENRY’S The servers’ T-shirts don’t say “Midtown’s Biggest Deck” for nothing at this lesbian-owned restaurant. Located on 10th Street just a short jaunt from Piedmont Park, Henry’s (www.henrysatl.com) patio, with sunny and shady seating, provides one of the premier Atlanta Pride Parade watching sites in the city. This popular patio is also dog friendly. Roxx (www.roxxfanclub.com) takes second with Joe’s On Juniper (joesonjuniper. com) placing third.

Best Italian

ALFREDO’S When you want to feel like you are eating in an Italian grandmother’s kitchen, take a trip to Alfredo’s (1989 Cheshire Bridge Road, 404-876-1380) for comfort red-sauce dishes and an attentive staff. The restaurant opened in 1974 and is one of Atlanta’s oldest Italian dining establishments. The restaurant’s interior, with dark wood paneling and mirrors everywhere, is a throwback to an earlier era. Diners are loyal and many have been eating at Alfredo’s since the 1970s. The fried calamari is an excellent start to a meal and the Padrino, or Godfather, with three veal preparations, is always a favorite. Save room for dessert, especially the cannoli. And be prepared to drop some coin—this establishment is not cheap. Finishing number two is Campagnolo (www.campagnoloatl.com) and placing third is Osteria 832 (www.osteria832.com).

Best Romantic

CAMPAGNOLO The casual Italian restaurant Campagnolo (www.campagnoloatl.com) is the top vote getter. Opened in 2012, Campagnolo’s offers a warm interior as well as a spacy patio near the corner of the crossroads of gay Atlanta—10th and Piedmont. The location is perfect for people watching whether on your first date or as newlyweds enjoying a night in Midtown. After a filling meal, take a walk to Piedmont Park and continue the romance with a stroll around Lake Clara Meer. Campagnolo edged out Agave (agaverestaurant.com) and Apres Diem (apresdiem. com) for Most Romantic restaurant.

Best Takeout

DOC CHEY’S When you don’t feel like dining out and don’t want to cook, the best place to pick up takeout is Doc Chey’s (doccheys.com), according to Georgia Voice readers. With locations in Grant Park, Morningside-Virginia-Highland, and now Emory, there’s a Doc Chey’s within driving distance of many living in Atlanta. Second place finisher is Su’s Chinese (www.suschinese.com) and taking the third spot is Chico and Chang (www.chicoandchang.com).

Best Vegetarian

RADIAL CAFE Gay-owned Radial Cafe (www.radial.us) keeps its title as Best Vegetarian, repeating as the number one vote getter after taking the title last year. The Biscuits and Vegetarian Gravy as well as the vegetarian sausage are delicious enough to fool any meat-lover. The lunch and dinner menus also have numerous vegetarian options, including black bean burger and parsnip farroto. Coming in second is Doc Chey’s (doccheys.com) and placing third is Chai Pani (chaipanidecatur.com).

Best Cheap Eats

ROXX For a great meal at an affordable price, there’s no better value than Roxx, say Georgia Voice voters. Most dinner dishes run

you between $10 and $15 with a nice lunch selection offering meals at lower prices. Chai Pani (www.chaipanidecatur.com) is the next top vote getter and placing third is Doc Chey’s (www.doccheys.com).

Our chefs and bartenders are constantly pushing the envelope and challenging the traditional definition of dining, and these efforts are not going unrecognized. Located just east of Downtown Atlanta and convenient to Midtown, DeKalb’s hidden gems are gaining national, and in some cases, even global recognition. Our friendly and progressive neighborhoods include walkable areas with incredible restaurants and trendy shops as well as exciting nightlife in Decatur, East Atlanta Village and other DeKalb neighborhoods.

Actor

DARRICK WILSON Darrick Wilson was involved in a recent 48 Hour Film Project movie and can been seen in Next Level’s recent “Colors Atlanta” project. Plus, he has a few film listings on IMDB. He’s your choice as Atlanta’s favorite actor. Topher Payne (www.topherpayne.com) finishes second and Freddie Ashley third.

DJ

LIZ OWEN The reader’s choice for best DJ is Liz Owen. She’s been around town a while, and is now getting her due. Liz throws down beats at locations such as My Sister’s Room and at Blake’s, where she spins for Girls Night. It’s hard to stand still when she is doing her thing. DJ E and Stuart Myerburg are your second and third choices, respectively. www.thegeorgiavoice.com

Drag King

JORDAN MICHAELS MCCORD Atlanta’s Jordan Michaels McCord is once again the top vote getter here. Besides winning drag king competitions everywhere in sight, the entertainer is a much-seen figure hosting and performing at My Sister’s Room at events such as Sexy Saturdays and Raw Talent. As busy as this keeps the performer, Jordan also has time to dabble in acting and modeling along the way. Hayden Fury is your second favorite, and Kaymen Syder Cooter Giavanni third.

Drag Queen

EVAH DESTRUCTION She is a perennial presence all over town, and Evah Destruction (www.facebook.com/ EvahDestruction) is the drag queen you adore the most. BURKHART’S Whether you’re ready to test your pipes in karaoke, or sit back and watch the pros perform during one of the weekend drag shows, Burkhart’s (www.burkharts.com) leads the pack as the best overall bar for Georgia Voice readers. The joint also has one of the largest, yet coziest patios in Atlanta nightlife, a surprisingly tasty steak dinner, a venerable poker table – and free popcorn!

WABE (www.wabe.org) comes in second and B98.5 (www.b985.com) third.

Musician

J TYLER Repeating as champion in this field is J Tyler (jtylermusic.com), the young Atlanta artist who has taken the hip-hop field by storm. He’s openly gay in an industry where being so hasn’t always the wise, traditional thing to do—and it hasn’t hurt his career at all. He performed at Gay Day at Six Flags Over Georgia last year, among other rainbow gigs. In second is Tim Joyce.

Writer/Playwright

TOPHER PAYNE He’s as prolific as ever: Topher Payne (www.topherpayne.com) wins here. For years he has produced plays all over Atlanta stages, but earlier this season Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company presented his comedy-drama “Angry Fags,” and in the fall his award-winning “Perfect Arrangement” bows at Primary Stages off-Broadway. In 2015 he even got an agent! Johnny Drago finishes second and Michelle A. Daniel third.

Atlanta Eagle (www.atlantaeagle.com) finished a strong second, while Mary’s (www. marysatlanta.com) rounded out the top three.

Bartender

CHAD MCDANIEL @ OSCAR’S TONY JACKSON @ ATLANTA EAGLE Georgia Voice readers poured a lot of love on quite a few bartenders, but Chad McDaniel of Oscar’s (www.oscarsatlanta.com) and Tony Jackson of Atlanta Eagle (www.atlantaeagle.com) emerged as the most charming and heavy-handed of the bunch. Chad’s martini mixing and encyclopedic knowledge of show tunes, and Tony’s bare-chested bartending helped the two surge past a crowded field of beloved pourers. In a five-way tie for third were Dustyn of Burkhart’s (www.burkharts.com), Alfons at Heretic (www.hereticatlanta.com), Michael at The Model T (www.modeltatlanta.com) and Matt and Bernadette at Mary’s (www.marysatlanta.com). Lesbian Theme Night

COUNTRY NIGHT @ HERETIC You can take the lesbian out of the country, but every once in a while a girl wants to kick her heels and do-si-do, which is why Country Night @ The Heretic (www.hereticatlanta.com/thursday) sashayed its way to this year’s best lesbian theme night. The girls gather on Cheshire Bridge every Thursday and select Saturdays, when they nearly burn the barn down with their hotness. The monthly Swank (www.facebook. com/bellissima.atlanta) parties at 10th & Piedmont was runner-up.

Best Gay Bar

BURKHART’S After a quarter century of serving up boys and booze, Burkhart’s (www.burkharts. com) remains the favorite spot for gay men looking to party in Atlanta. With two levels of tipsy boys, drag shows such as Tossed Salad with Brigitte Bidet, and the Saturday night Synergy show with Monica Van Pelt and Shawanna Brooks, it’s no wonder that Burkhart’s maintains its reign. Second place went to Mary’s (www.marysatlanta.com), and Atlanta Eagle (www.atlantaeagle.com) took third.

Dance Floor

ATLANTA EAGLE Once looked at with a leery eye due to its burly men and legendary backroom, Atlanta Eagle (www.atlantaeagle.com) continues its emergence as the go-to dance floor to sweat away the week’s problems. With a DJ line-up that includes Chris Kind and Ron Pullman, the beats at the Eagle will have your spirits in full flight. The Heretic (www.hereticatlanta.com) and Jungle (www.jungleatl.com) took second and third place, respectively.

Drag Show

THE ARMORETTES The no-good do-gooders known as The Armorettes (www.armorettes.com) continue to be Atlanta’s most endearing drag troupe. For three-and-a-half decades, the ladies have been using off-color camp drag to raise money for HIV/AIDS organizations via their annual Easter Drag Races

and their weekly show at The Hideaway. The always-entertaining The Other Show (www.facebook.com/TheOtherShow) at Jungle finished an admirable second, and the queens of Tossed Salad (www.burkharts. com) at Burkhart’s clawed their way to third.

Place to Meet Women

MY SISTER’S ROOM The dynasty of My Sister’s Room (www.facebook.com/msratl) as the top place to meet women has grown as the lesbian bar moved from Decatur, to East Atlanta, to its upcoming location in the heart Midtown. From the King of Thrones drag king shows to the Traxx Girls dance parties, no venue in Atlanta offers the variety of beautiful and available women. Also be sure to check out second place finisher Henry’s (www.henrysatl.com), or the Women’s Outdoor Network Social Group (httpwww.meetup.com/wonatlanta), which finished third.

Afterhours

XION When you’re not ready to call it a night until the sun comes up, there’s no better place to keep the party going than Xion (www.cariocaproductions.com), winner of this year’s best afterhours. A powerhouse roster of local, national and international DJs stop by the booth on Cheshire Bridge to keep the energy high in the wee hours of the morning. Besides Waffle House, the other best bet for late night fun is to try to get laid at runner-up Flex (www.flexspas.com/#!atlanta) or third place finisher Manifest4U (www.manifest4u.org).

ROBIN WILLIAMS SAYS GOODBYE The late actor plays gay in final on-screen film role By JIM FARMER

Out screenwriter Douglas Soesbe recalls Williams being extremely well prepared and someone who brought passion and research to his craft. (Courtesy photo)

Back when he was writing the script for what would eventually become the film “Boulevard,” Douglas Soesbe hadn’t forecast any particular actors for the leading role. But when Robin Williams became interested in the project a number of years later, Soesbe knew it was perfect casting. “I can’t even imagine anyone else,” he says. But what was headed towards being an indie drama last year, perhaps with a small theatrical release, has turned into something more with the death of Williams in August of 2014. “Boulevard” marks William’s last on-screen film appearance. Directed by Dito Montiel, the film opened in New York and Los Angeles earlier this month and expands to Atlanta July 31 at Landmark’s Midtown Art Cinema. CONTINUES ON PAGE 52

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 51 Williams plays Nolan Mack, a 60-year-old who has been married for decades to Joy (Kathy Baker) and has a safe, long-time job at a bank. One night while out driving, he meets hustler Leo (Roberto Aguire) and his life changes. Soesbe wrote this originally 10 years ago and did a rewrite three years ago. By that time he knew Williams was attached. When he first wrote the script, he wrote it for Los Angeles and Nolan was a college professor. He decided to keep the structure the same,

but changed the locale. “We felt that Los Angeles was too cosmopolitan for the story to be happening in, and by putting Nolan in a less rural environment than a college campus it was more difficult,” he says. “It was filmed in Nashville but now it’s set in a nameless city.” The young character of Leo was meant to be kind of a mystery. “Leo was a catalytic force,” says Soesbe. “I intentionally underwrote Leo; he is almost like a ghost. Something traumatic has happened to him. I think, in a pre-Stonewall age,

Nolan shut himself down when he was a certain age and never ever developed beyond that point in developing himself. Leo represents Nolan’s youth. He’s like a son to him. The fact that he is a hustler removes the expectation and intimacy. He can’t become attached to him. They can keep a wall between them.” One of the obstacles facing Nolan, Soesbe says, is that he grew up in an era where being gay itself was illegal. Soesbe, who is himself gay, wrote the script in part because of all the friends his age who did get married because that was what society expected of him.

“That happened a lot,” he says. “There was so much pressure then. Being gay was a negative thing. You felt guilty, horrible. I think a lot of gay men who loved a woman as a friend thought they could make it work. It was better than being alone. Some have survived; I know some men who are still in those relationships. Some blew up.” He admits many older men have told him that “Boulevard” is their story – and younger audiences have acknowledged the comingout process isn’t easy anytime. “It is gratifying,” he says. Williams was a Julliard-trained actor who got noticed early for comedy but was equally adept at dramatic roles such as “Good Will Hunting” - which won him an Oscar - and “One Hour Photo.” “The comedy was something he did on the side first and then he realized that was so much of where his talent laid,” says Soesbe. He also never shied away from gay roles in films such as “The Birdcage” and “The Night Listener.” Soesbe wasn’t on the set for the 21-day shoot much – just three days – but talked to Williams some during the time. He recalls the actor being extremely well prepared and someone who brought passion and research to his craft. Williams did see a rough cut of the film before he passed and he posted on Facebook that he liked it. Soesbe honestly doesn’t know if the film would have gotten a release if Williams had not passed away so unexpectedly. “I don’t even know if it would,” he says. “Today’s market is all about explosions. Studios are reluctant to release these small movies.” The screenwriter’s own coming out process was bumpy. He went to gay bars growing up but didn’t tell his family. His family was not homophobic but they knew nothing about it. “It just wasn’t part of their world,” he says. “My brother was very macho, maybe a little homophobic when younger, but he is very gay-friendly now.” He admits that “Boulevard” is the most personal script he has ever written – his others have been TV and cable movies and thrillers/genre pieces. Yet the experience has given him motivation to do more small-scale work like it. He recently finished another script that deals with a gay character – this one a younger man and the oft-turbulent relationship with his father.

ACTING OUT Faith and sexuality converge By JIM FARMER

When the 17th annual Essential Theatre Festival opens on July 24, it does so with the new play “The Old Ship of Zion.” It’s the professional premiere of the work, written by Columbus, Georgia native Natalia Naman, and deals with gay issues set against a religious background. We caught up with Essential Theatre’s artistic director Peter Hardy, who is also directing the production, to talk about the play and this year’s festival. Georgia Voice: Tell us about “The Old Ship of Zion.” Hardy: It’s about a small, struggling AfricanAmerican church in Columbus, Georgia and its members. It presents a young man, Quincy, and his struggle. It’s presented in a sympathetic and positive way. It does show the experiences others have had with the church in a positive way; it doesn’t just say the church is bad. Quincy is on his way towards accepting all parts of himself, his nature as a gay man as well as a man of faith. You don’t have to deny one or the other. I actually don’t know of any other plays that have explored that, at least with the African-American church. This is more of a thorny issue than with some churches. I think it’s a wonderful play. We choose plays we do, not based on any content— we’re just looking for the best from our submissions. I think it’s warm and funny and has seven distinct characters. What is the lead character going through? Quincy is in a school, and he comes from Americus, Georgia. He’s away from his family, a freshman in college. He talks about how he feels isolated as he begins to realize he is a stranger to himself and those who know him best. He is in the process of understanding things. It doesn’t come easily, as in real life. Another character is a pretty flamboyantly openly gay man in the choir that no one talks about. Everyone knows it. It’s kind of a “don’t ask, don’t tell” kind of thing—okay as long as it’s not mentioned or discussed. Quincy talks to the audience about this guy who tells him that if he ever needs to talk to someone, he is there. Quincy wonders how the other guy www.thegeorgiavoice.com

knows and wonders if maybe [what he is going through] is just a phase, or maybe if he prays enough it will go away. He is trying to find out what options he has. Does he ignore it? Does he hide who he is? That is what a lot of people have to face. What is the other show in repertory? “Lillian Likes It,” written by Joshua Mikel and directed by Shannon Eubanks. It’s about people communicating on the Internet, about how people spend more time talking online than in person. It starts as a social comedy/ satire but gets more complicated and serious. Your history includes a lot of LGBT themes in the work.

EATING MY WORDS By CLIFF BOSTOCK

Four distinctive food finds in ATL Hungry? Here are four restaurants I visited in the past week: Ah-Ma’s Taiwanese Kitchen (931 Monroe Drive, 404-549-9848): This tiny jewel in Midtown Promenade became one of my favorite restaurants as soon as it opened almost a year ago. “Ah-Ma” means “grandmother” in Taiwanese. Thus, the cooking is a homey blend of traditional dishes from Taiwan’s multicultural heritage—mainly Chinese, but with plenty of notes from the era of Japanese occupation. Interestingly, the Chinese themselves did not arrive on the island until after the Dutch and Spanish settled it in the 17th Century (thus sayeth Wikipedia). As a nation with one of the world’s densest populations, Taiwan is famous for its huge nighttime street markets. So it’s no surprise that, besides home-style dishes, Ah-Ma’s reflects our recent obsession with worldwide street food. AhMa’s is cheap, it’s filling, it’s not fiery-spiced. It honors natural, earthy flavors, but unexpected ingredients can take the palate by surprise. I’m particularly fond of the bao—white, delicate buns served slider-style. One night last week, I ordered two. The first was stuffed with pork belly, pickled mustard greens, cilantro, and crushed sweet peanuts. The other, called the Dirty Bird, featured a fried chicken cutlet, house-made wasabi aioli, pickled daikon radishes and carrot strips. Both of these dishes stimulate all the senses. They’re beautiful, they have a light touch, and they tour the palate with slightly bitter, sweet and salty flavors. Juicy textures collide with crunchy ones. Bone Lick BBQ (1133 Huff Rd. NW, 404-343-6574, www.bonelickbarbecue.com): I love Bone Lick, mainly for its mustardy Carolina-style sauce, although its sweeter tomato-based sauces hit the spot too. The restaurant had its start as a wildly popular pop-up at P’cheen (R.I.P.) on Monday nights. Chef Mike LaSage then opened this full-service, rustically decorated restaurant. I especially like the Texas-style brisket. A warning, though: it can be a bit dry, which sometimes means the meat was not given sufficient rest time after cooking. The fat doesn’t coagulate. However, I recently took my leftover brisket home and found that a night in the rewww.thegeorgiavoice.com

frigerator plus low heating created a much juicier meat. Recently, I pigged out on the slightly spicy house-smoked sausage. You’ll also find perfect ribs, chicken, and pulled pork. Wahoo Grill (1042 W. College Ave., 404-373-3331, www.wahoogrilldecatur.com): It’s been several years since I visited this fish/ seafood-based restaurant. Get a seat in the rear dining room and you’ll have a view of the restful gardened patio. You can eat out there if you can take the heat. My most recent dinner was a special of panseared grouper with fresh ratatouille stuffed into a hollow yellow tomato. It spilled onto the plate, cozying up to some creamy white grits. I also tried the restaurant’s inexpensive and generous starter plate of charcuterie and cheeses ($9). Some other dishes include fried chicken, shrimp and grits, sesame-crusted ahi tuna, seared scallops, and a steak. All dishes are tagged with possible allergens; vegetarians can find plenty to eat. Mezcalito’s (304 Oakland Ave., 678-705-7008, www.mezcalitoscantina.com). This Mexican-style restaurant and tequila bar serves pretty average tacos and enchiladas. I usually skip those. My favorite is the chunks of pork tenderloin cooked in a red mole. I’d like the mole to have deeper, fruity notes, but that’s a minor complaint. THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID By MELISSA CARTER

Action figures and workforce changes I just received my Hillary Clinton action figure in the mail, thanks to Kickstarter. The crowd-funding effort explained that “dolls like Barbie have a long history of sending out the wrong message” to young girls, so they created this doll as the antidote. As fun as it is to have my little plastic politician, let’s not lose sight of how important it is to all women that the former First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State is running for president again. This is not about politics, or an attempt to recruit votes for the Clinton campaign. To really appreciate what Hillary is trying to accomplish now, we must first look at where she came from. During a recent trip to the salon, I sat in the waiting room with a woman named Deborah. Bragging about my new toy as we waited for our chairs, I soon discovered Deborah was the same age as Clinton. So I had her describe for me what it was like to enter the professional world as a woman when they did. And the answers were sobering. “They always asked about what birth control I was using at job interviews,” she described, “and how could I prove I wouldn’t get pregnant while on the job. I finally came up with a story about a hysterectomy, making it impossible, that I used at job interviews.” You should be able to trust your doctor, but even Deborah was judged when she simply wanted to get birth control. “When I went to get some, my male OBGYN wouldn’t give me any, because I wasn’t married,” said Deborah. “He wouldn’t condone letting me get ‘spoiled’ before marriage.” Of course you expect men to discriminate against women 40 years ago, but even women jumped on the sexist bandwagon. “I remember trying to get a job as an account manager and being interviewed by a woman who told me I couldn’t be considered for anything but typing,” she said. “That’s because women’s fingers were de-

It was the way God intended so I could do typing or nothing.” In regards to today, Deborah said she is relieved that no one is talking much about Hillary’s hair or her figure, that they are talking about her impact in the world. I certainly never had to endure the same experiences Deborah did while looking for a job. Despite continued sexism I have experienced when it comes to salary, progress is being made for women in the workplace and should always be appreciated. I’m glad I helped fund that Kickstarter campaign, and agree that a doll who is important for being skinny and dating a guy with a tan line is incredibly outdated for young women. The next step? Go from having a presidential candidate as an action figure to a female president on United States currency. Melissa Carter is one of the Morning Show hosts on B98.5. A Supreme Court victory provides a boost to any birthday plans, as I found out when the same-sex marriage ruling kicked off the weekend of my 35th. The last weekend in June wound up being an enchanting blur of bar-hopping and giddy, hopeful conversations with strangers, and a personal contentment upon reaching an age where I am undeniably Grown. Yet my most distinct memory from that weekend was the amiable bigotry I gagged on while finishing my first drink at Blake’s. My friend and I were at the bar when we started chatting with two guys, one of whom was black and celebrating his birthday, and his best friend, a white heterosexual. My friend complimented the beauty of their friendship, and they exchanged tipsy professions of their fraternal love for one another, across categories. My friend drifted into conversation with the birthday boy, while the kick-ass bestie and I plunged into an intoxicating discussion. “So what was it like at Auburn?” the white, heterosexual best friend asked. “It must’ve been sweet, huh? I mean—I don’t wanna be That Guy, but you had scholarships, right? As a minority.” I kept my cup toward my face and my straw in my mouth to buy time to absorb the nerve and/or naïveté thus revealed within someone who theretofore had seemed so enlightened. “I had several scholarships,” I said in a clarifying tone. “Some were minority-based, but many weren’t. I’d like to think ... and I think others would think ... that I earned whatever I got. And I guess I will be That Guy and note that a couple of them were from The New York Times.” Truthfully, the New York Times scholarships may have been among the minority-based ones, but he didn’t need to know that. Because he clearly didn’t know that $1,000 stipends are not the muscle that lifts kids from the ghettos to college degrees at out-of-state-tuition rates, and he was oblivious to any merit or ingenuity that a minority student might exhibit to aid his matriculation through higher education. “You’re a super cool dude and you seem to

The management at Blake’s is an embarrassment to our city and our movement, but the shortlived dress code was surprising only in how lazy it was in concealing its intent. I’ve been in the parking lot at 10th and Piedmont and seen groups of white guys debate whether to go into Blake’s or party across the street; sometimes someone will blurt out something along the lines of “It’s too dark in Blake’s,” but more often facial movements and knowing glances guide the groups across the street. If I witness these encounters as a casual patron, surely the folks who run Blake’s are aware of the rising unease among their longtime customers due to the influx of black gay men on certain nights. The overwhelming majority of black men who (used to) go to Blake’s were young and middle-aged professionals, whose experience and merit are degraded when Blake’s—the management, and the traditional clientele—classifies their way of dress, and by implication their very presence, as threatening and unwelcome. The crowd at Blake’s is willing to get ratchet and yell “Bye Felicia” all day, but let authentic black people and culture arrive in their space, and see how quickly they turn into That Guy.
