While some folks call it ATLwood these days, Atlanta had a top-notch art scene long before the film crews moved in. Whether you prefer theater, dance, vocal performances, or visual art, Atlanta’s got you covered.

The World’s a Stage If plays and musical theater are your things — but a pricey ticket to the Big Apple isn’t — take a look at what’s on stage in the ATL.

The famous Fox Theatre is coming back from the coronavirus pandemic strong with a slew of Broadway favorites in its 2021/22 season. Check out “Hamilton” starting in late August, “Fiddler on the Roof” come November, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Disney’s “Frozen,” “Mean Girls,” and more. You may have heard of the Alliance Theatre because it boasts its very own Tony Award. This season, Alliance is back at the Woodruff Arts Center with “Darlin’ Cory,” “A Christmas Carol,” “Toni Stone,” “Bina’s Six Apples,” and more. Learn more at AllianceTheatre.org. Theatre (HorizonTheatre.com) has 172 seats to watch its contemporary plays. LGBTQ-owned Out Front Theatre Company (OutFrontTheatre.com) has a summer camp and regular performances to be determined.

7 Stages Theatre (7Stages.org), located in Little 5 Points off Euclid Avenue, has brought works of political and social importance to the stage since 1979. It also hosts educational workshops and youth events to get the community more engaged in the performing arts.

The Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus has a long-standing tradition of providing support and service as well as musical excellence to the Atlanta LGBTQ community and our city at large! Adding to this wonderful tradition was the formation of the Atlanta Women’s Chorus just five years ago. Both organizations are artistic jewels, bringing quality entertainment as well as music with messages of hope and inspiration. We pride ourselves on speaking to issues of inclusion and acceptance. Today, over 150 talented and diverse singers comprise the two choruses; together, the volunteer members of the AGMC and AWC entertain thousands of gay and straight audience members from metro Atlanta and beyond, through their thought-provoking performances.

Theatrical Outfit is an Atlanta-based theater company whose purpose is to provide their diverse audiences, actors, and artists with rich theater experience. Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company

(TrueColorsTheatre.org) is a non-profit theater company co-founded by Tony-winning Broadway director Kenny Leon and Jane Bishop in 2002. The theatre company produces world-premiere plays by diverse playwrights with a commitment to preserving African American classics. As there is no permanent theater space for the company, they have dubbed themselves a “moveable feast,” presenting plays at the Southwest Arts Center, Theatrical Outfits Balzer Theatre, Porter Sanford III Performing Arts Center, and the Rialto Center for the Arts.

The Aurora Theatre (AuroraTheatre.com) in Lawrenceville welcomes in a number of performances this summer, including their Summer Chills and Thrills series in partnership with Lawrenceville Ghost Tours.

than theater. Atlanta Ballet (AtlantaBallet.com) is one of the nation’s premier dance companies, and its 92-year history helped make it the State Ballet of Georgia. The dancers bring us a fabulous slate of performances this season, including their annual “The Nutcracker” performance during the winter holidays.

We can’t forget the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Eye Spy It’s hard to be in Atlanta without noticing all the visual art around — it’s in gift shops, it’s on murals, it’s on the famous Krog Street Tunnel. It’s also on display in more traditional museums and galleries, like the High Museum in Midtown. The High’s upcoming exhibits include “Calder-Picasso,” “Electrifying Design: A Century of Lighting,” “Outside the Lines,” “Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America,” “Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe,” “Picturing the South: 25 Years,” and “KAWS PRINTS.” Visit the museum in early 2022 to catch of glimpse of the famous Obama portraits as they stop in Atlanta on their tour across the country.
