WELCOME TO OUT ON FILM 2024
When people ask me to describe this year’s Out On Film, one thing I can say is – it’s a lot. There are as many films as we have ever had, and as much Atlanta as we have ever had. That makes me happy
Speaking of happy, this year’s theme is Queer Joy Queer joy is something we all need and deserve, especially after so many years where everything we saw in terms of LGBTQIA+ representation in movies and TV was tragic and dour That does not mean, however, that everything you will see at this year’s festival will be peppy. A lot will be, but we do address some of the challenges we face with our films, both external and internal. Queer Joy does mean, though, you will get to see the projects together and experience the pleasure of communal viewing
We open our festival with a charmer Anthony Schatteman’s exuberant Young Hearts, which has been wowing audiences since its bow at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year We close with High Tide, Marco Calvani’s expertly directed and acted film about a young man – undocumented and adrift - in the aftermath of a break-up in Provincetown. We are also delighted to present the world premiere of Scott Turner Schofield’s Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps, which was filmed here at 7 Stages. Scott lived in Atlanta for many years
Other treats include Juan Pablo di Pace’s stunning directorial debut Duino, the wonderful lesbian romantic comedy What a Feeling; two stellar films that debuted triumphantly at Sundance – Desire Lines and In The Summers; the sexy Sebastian, the horror comedy Mother Father Sister Brother Frank; Lady Like, looking at the career of Lady Camden; a ladies night double night feature of Bulletproof: A Lesbian’s Guide to Surviving the Plot and Under the Influencer, the Atlanta specific Light Up and Transcendence, and so much more. Returning favorites include our popular Local Shorts. We have so much Alanta that this year we have a second program of local shorts called Spotlight: ATL. Also check out our Horror Night, Girl Power and Transfabulous programs. We will also host our Oscar® qualifying drama shorts and a reading of the third winner of the Out On Film screenplay competition. We look forward to seeing audiences in theaters. Some of our fare will also be available online as well.
Check out our exciting 2024 schedule, watch a lot of great films and join us for some special Q and As, both in person and virtual. See you at the movies!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

SUNDAY, OCT 6 @5PM OUT FRONT THEATRE COMPANY STRIKING WITH PRIDE: UNITED
AT THE COALFACE
(U.K., 75 MINUTES, DIRECTED BY ASHLEY FRANCIS-ROY)
Between London Pride 1984 and 1985, an unlikely alliance was forged between the gay men and lesbians of London, and the striking miners of South Wales. Everyone loves a good love story: and this is one of the most unexpected and uplifting love stories ever: not between two people, but between two communities who - seemingly worlds apart - found common cause and compassion for each other in the face of immense challenges, and changed the course of history for queer people in the UK. Among other unique stylistic elements, iconic drag queen Tayce narrates the film, telling this powerful fable to a group of kids in a playful and poignant storytime session, which will bring fresh meaning and relevance to the story through the perspective of this new generation..
DRAMA SHORTS
Out On Film is excited to present four of the year’s best dramatic short films. Ashlyn’s inability to accept herself keeps her from pursuing her biggest dream—acting. Sister Wives is a multi-layered love story that tells the tale of young women living in 2003 within a strict, fundamentalist, polygamous society in Utah: Kaidence and Galilee find themselves bound to one another, under the same roof, in the same marriage, as they develop scary, new, exciting feelings for each other. A Honduran immigrant is given the chance to meet her mother after nearly two decades of separation. Finally, two former college teammates, after 20 years of estrangement, find themselves summoned to their late friend’s estate hearing. To claim their inheritance, they must first confront their past relationship while undergoing a polygraph test.

Marie Theres (Caroline Peters), a successful doctor, had different plans for her 20th wedding anniversary. Did her husband Alexander (Heikko Deutschmann) really have to break up with her that evening? Yes, he had to, because not only did he imagine the evening going differently, but a whole different life: more happiness and freedom, less of Marie Theres. As a result of this unpleasant turn of events, Marie Theres does what any sensible woman in her position would: she goes for a drink and stumbles into Bigi’s (Barbara Spitz) queer bar and meets Fa (Proschat Madani). Fa is fun-loving, spontaneous and unattached. She lives her love life openly. Even though the stuck-up doctor isn’t Fa’s type, she still takes Marie Theres home after the boozy evening. Marie Theres, however, is too drunk to remember—did we or didn’t we? As their worlds collide, feelings emerge, but nothing is simple.

An Iranian-American trans man, Ahmad, searching for his place in history, finds more than just a link to the past in the archives. Drawing from first-person accounts, as well as fictionalized segments, filmmaker Jules Rosskam explores the lines of desire as they intersect with identity for many trans men.
PRECEDED BY SKIN (U.S., 7 MIN., DIR. LEO BEHRENS)
This is a one-man special that’s a little… different. Becoming a Man in 127 EASY Steps is the film of trans icon Scott Turner Schofield’s long-running performance art piece embodying the experience of becoming a man. Taken from 127 total stories and over 15 years of material, this one-hour special—largely filmed at 7 Stages—blends archival footage, live performance, animation, and bold cinematic imagery. A total redefinition of the “transition narrative,” the film represents a lifetime from a trans-masculine perspective: a childhood believing in the identity that came true; transition as a period of both drama and comedy; and the radical belief in change that fuels a #RealLiveTransAdult irrepressibly navigating an authentic life.

When Lex’s mental health starts to spiral from the pressure, Andrea assumes ownership of her work— prompting Lex to plot psychological showdown against the exploitative mentor who stole her art and nearly destroyed her mind.
While major decisions often take the spotlight, it’s the seemingly inconsequential choices we make that can quietly influence the course of our lives. Anthony Hickling’s bright, charming Ella takes a look at the concept of small choices and how they can have an unexpectedly profound impact on the journey of a 21-year-old actress in France.

I am living with
HIV,
and I’m pregnant or planning to be.
What’s possible?
There are things you should consider to help protect you and your baby during pregnancy. HIV treatments may allow you to reach and stay undetectable if taken as prescribed. Undetectable means that there is so little virus in the blood that a lab test can’t measure it. Taking HIV treatment as prescribed, along with other guidance from your healthcare provider, may help lower the chances of transmitting HIV to your baby during pregnancy and childbirth.
Talk to your healthcare provider about HIV treatment and additional considerations both now and for the future for family planning, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding when living with HIV.
Have an open and honest conversation with your healthcare provider to start, switch, or continue on the HIV treatment that’s right for you.
Thrills and some laughs co-exist in this spooky program. A terrified couple seeks the help of a paranormal medium in hopes of revealing the true intentions of their child’s “imaginary friend.” Transfixed by the smell of his victims, a stalker takes his obsession to the limit. A possessive doctor prepares an ostensibly romantic bath for his narcissistic boyfriend, but after an accusation of infidelity, things take a deeply disturbing turn. A queer black woman from South Carolina having her first child has remnants of her past begin to torment her via the old urban legend of the boo hag. Max catches up with his high-school bully 17 years later in a fancy restaurant where Max’s grudge against Adam begins to manifest in horrific ways.

A suburban family plots murder when an uncle crashes Sunday dinner with a nasty surprise. This gleeful and gory comedy thriller has a top notch cast including Mindy Cohn, Enrico Colantoni and Chad Connell.
Learn what’s possible about pregnancy and living with HIV.
Taking HIV treatment as prescribed, along with other guidance from your healthcare provider, may help lower the chances of transmitting HIV to your baby during pregnancy and childbirth. In 2019, less than 1% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States were due to transmission from mother to child.
The goal of treating HIV while pregnant is getting to and keeping your viral load at an undetectable level. Undetectable means that there is so little virus in the blood that a lab test can’t measure it. According to the CDC, if you take treatment as directed throughout pregnancy and delivery and give HIV treatment to your baby for the first 2 to 6 weeks after birth, the risk of transmission to your baby drops to below 1%.
Talk to your healthcare provider about HIV treatment, getting to and staying undetectable, and the recommendations for HIV treatment during pregnancy.

An arranged marriage tears a lesbian couple apart, but, with a mother’s love, perhaps another future is possible. Great Canyon is a live-action / animated hybrid which chronicles a queer first date through the lens of the anxieties and insecurities that exude from the main character. The morning after hooking up, two recent college grads wrestle with their feelings for each other while a strange and inexplicable phenomenon creeps up in the background. In a chance encounter on Grindr, a reclusive barman at an Arkansas line-dancing bar connects with a charismatic Hollywood actor; the sheer force of their chemistry pushes him to question the isolated life he has built for himself. Gay and lonely, Lloyd is on a shame-fuelled, Grindr-addicted spiral into tragedy. Skin is a poetic exploration of identity and self-discovery, using visual symbolism to depict a woman’s transformation into a man.

Everyone’s trying to get their rocks off in this enjoyable, slightly naughty set of shorts. Buzz waits outside the apartment building of his anonymous Grindr hookup, imagining all the depraved ways this night could end. Horrified yet horny, Buzz buzzes the buzzer. In 1990s Athens, Angelo, an Albanian young man working at a record store, has a fleeting encounter with a client. One day, Yotam discovers he’s been infected with an insufferable skin disease and realizes he’s got no choice but to stop his way of living for a while. Trans women face more difficulties in Latin America than in any other part of the world. In most of these countries, unchecked transphobia severely limits trans people’s access to education, employment, housing, and medical services. In Mexico, which has one of the highest murder rates of trans women in the world, the prosecution of these crimes is regrettably uncommon. But despite these challenges, many trans women live empowered lives; they live in truth and have found respect, acceptance, love, and fulfilling careers.
A House is Not a Disco documents a year-in-the-life in the world’s most iconic “homonormative” community: Fire Island Pines. Situated fifty miles from New York City, this storied queer beach town finds itself in the midst of a renaissance as a new generation of Millennial homeowners reimagine The Pines for a new, more inclusive era. Filmed like a Frederick Wiseman movie on magic mushrooms, a large cast of unforgettable eccentrics, activists, drifters, and first timers reflect on the legacy of The Pines while preparing their beloved village for the biggest challenge it has faced since the AIDS crisis: rising seas caused by climate change.

An Iranian-American trans man, Ahmad, searching for his place in history, finds more than just a link to the past in the archives.
