GREETINGS FROM
OUR MAYOR As the 59th mayor of Atlanta, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our city. Atlanta’s vibrant and diverse gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community is what makes our city one of the most visited cities in America. We are fortunate to have such a thriving LGBT population and it makes me proud to be both a resident and mayor of a city that embraces and fully supports its LGBT community. Our city benefits greatly from the many outstanding contributions of Atlanta’s LGBT residents. Every year, we attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across the world for one of the largest Pride festivals in the country. Atlanta is also home to some of the most progressive and gay-friendly government institutions, corporate and philanthropic organizations in America. Our unique neighborhoods including Midtown, Virginia Highland, East Atlanta and others have a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes which are enjoyed by not just those in the LGBT community, but also residents of the broader Atlanta metropolitan region. While in our city, we encourage visitors to explore the many attractions Atlanta has to offer including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, Centennial Olympic Park, Woodruff Arts Center, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Children’s Museum of Atlanta and many more.
Mayor Kasim Reed
We invite you to share in our Southern hospitality, sample cuisine at our many fine restaurants and enjoy the rich and diverse heritage of our city. On behalf of the people of Atlanta, I welcome you to Atlanta and offer best wishes for a remarkable and memorable visit. Sincerely,
Kasim Reed

SOUTHERN
HOSPITALITY... ... WITH A DOSE OF DIVERSITY It is my pleasure to welcome you to Atlanta. On behalf of Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau and the entire hospitality community, we hope that you have a wonderful experience in our city. Whether this is your first visit or you are a returning guest, Atlanta continues to offer new experiences. A visitor’s journey begins in Centennial Olympic Park, the perfect starting point to explore Atlanta. The park is surrounded by top attractions just steps away from each other, including the Georgia Aquarium and the World of CocaCola, and there’s more to come. The Atlanta Streetcar will begin operation in mid-2014. This state-of-the art transportation system will connect many of the city’s top historic sites with the downtown entertainment district. Also in 2014, the National Center for Civil & Human Rights and the College Football Hall of Fame will open near Centennial Olympic Park. Need a dining recommendation? Just ask the locals. Dining is one of our favorite past times. Atlanta boasts more than 700 Zagat-rated restaurants from traditional southern fare to upscale gourmet cuisine to locally-owned establishments. Atlanta’s extensive art scene and rich history create cultural offerings unmatched in the South. Visitors can enjoy art, music, theatre and more at awardwinning venues throughout the city. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, whose recordings have earned 17 Grammy Awards, plays more than 200 concerts per year. Atlanta is also home to 52 playhouses and theatres, including the Tony Award-winning Alliance Theatre. The city’s nightlife is diverse, with each neighborhood presenting a different vibe.
Whether this is your first visit or you are a returning guest, Atlanta continues to offer new experiences. From Ansley Mall’s laid-back atmosphere to the chic style of Buckhead to the trendy, cosmopolitan scene in Midtown, Atlanta’s after-hours scene offers something for everyone. That’s just a taste of what Atlanta has to offer. Rated as “one of America’s gayest cities” by The Advocate, Atlanta has something for every visitor. We look forward to showing you a bit of Southern hospitality in the most welcoming city in the world. Sincerely, William Pate President and CEO Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau

Atlanta:
‘The city too busy to hate’ Spend a day in Atlanta and you’ll forget you are vacationing in the Deep South. Dubbed “the city too busy to hate” during the Civil Rights era, Atlanta continues that tradition today. Georgia’s capital is as steeped in the Civil Rights Movement as it was in the Confederacy, and the city has earned its reputation as the gay mecca of the South. Visitors to Atlanta can pay their respects at the crypt of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King at the King Center, then travel just a few miles to tour the Margaret Mitchell House, where the author wrote her iconic Civil War novel “Gone With the Wind.” Locals and guests of all races and sexual orientations enjoy the amenities of Stone Mountain Park, located just east of Atlanta, where outdoor activities and a famous laser show take place in the shadow of the world’s largest piece of exposed granite, engraved with a massive carving of Confederate leaders. Gay and straight people of all races also turn out each year for the Atlanta Pride Festival, which draws throngs as much for its colorful mix of music, food and vendors as for the statement it makes about LGBT rights. But don’t let that make you think Atlanta’s LGBT community is apolitical. The city has been ground zero in several key gay rights battles that made headlines around the world, and today’s crop of activists are working just as hard to bring Georgia’s state laws up to speed with the capital city’s welcoming attitude. Atlanta’s first Gay Pride parade was held

Atlanta charms LGBT travelers from around the world with its signature mix of Southern hospitality and progressive values. in 1971. The city’s gay community made national headlines in 1978, when Anita Bryant — the beauty queen and orange juice spokesperson turned anti-gay crusader — came to town to address the Southern Baptist Convention, and a massive pro-gay demonstration replaced the annual Pride rally. As home of the federal Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, Atlanta also made news frequently throughout the height of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and early 1990s, as ACT UP and other HIV activists demanded more government response to the disease that was decimating gay men. The ‘80s also saw Atlanta in the spotlight as a Georgia case, Bowers vs. Hardwick, put anti-gay sodomy laws before the U.S. Supreme Court. Michael Hardwick, a gay man arrested in his own home for engaging in consensual oral sex, lost his challenge to the antiquated law in a bigoted 1986 decision that would later be overturned by the Supreme Court’s 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, which invalidated sodomy laws around the country. When the Cracker Barrel restaurant

chain fired several Atlanta area workers in 1991 for not adhering to its policy that employees have “normal heterosexual values,” activists launched protests and boycotts that drew national attention, including the Oprah Winfrey show. The policy was finally changed in 2002. LGBT activists scored an even bigger victory in the mid-1990s, earning a gold medal in activism leading up to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The controversy centered on Olympic organizers’ decision to hold the women’s volleyball competition in Cobb County, where the county commission passed a resolution calling homosexuality incompatible with community standards. Months of grassroots activism (and fear
of embarrassment should protests take place during the Olympics) finally led to Cobb County losing out on hosting Olympic events. LGBT Atlanta continues to achieve remarkable successes, including electing openly gay and lesbian candidates to city, county and state offices, and enacting domestic partner benefits in several jurisdictions throughout the state. To be certain, challenges and set backs remain, such as the state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage approved by Georgia voters in 2004. But strides toward equality take place everyday throughout Atlanta, where LGBT residents have established themselves as an integral thread in the fabric of the city.

Insider info Getting around Atlanta’s public transportation system, known as MARTA (www.itsmarta.com), can be a convenient way to travel around town. But the bus system is often confusing even to locals, so you may want to stick to the trains, which are easy to navigate and have stops near some of the city’s largest tourist attractions. The MARTA train is also a cheap, easy way to get to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Overall, Atlanta isn’t a very walkable city, but there are walkable pockets that can provide for a charming afternoon of shopping and dining. In addition to the tourist area around Centennial Olympic Park (including the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coke), you can happily walk retail and restaurant destinations including Atlantic Station, Decatur, East Atlanta Village, Little Five Points, Virginia Highland, the Midtown epicenter of 10th and Piedmont, and more. Depending on where you plan to shop, carry cash for parking. If you try to avoid paid parking lots by opting for side streets, look out for parking meters, yellow curbs, driveways and fire hydrants. Our city’s parking enforcement is known for vigilance, especially in Midtown, and you will be ticketed. Check our Neighborhoods section for more details. Stay safe As with any big city, Atlanta has its share of car break-ins, robberies and other crimes. If you’re out for a night on the town, think safety first: Don’t leave valuables in your car, park only in well-lit areas, and remember that there is safety in numbers. If drinking is part of your nightlife plan, consider taking a cab: a DUI is a terrible souvenir and roadblocks are common near popular bars. Unlike other major metropolitan cities, hailing a cab on the street isn’t easy in Atlanta, so take a cab company phone number with you when you go out or ask the bar to

help you call a taxi. If you should be the victim of a crime, the Atlanta Police Department has two dedicated LGBT liaison officers and you can request their help if it makes dealing with police more comfortable. Style guide Our nightlife is casual, but not sloppy. Shorts, jeans, polos, stylish t-shirts and buttonups are generally appropriate in most bars listed in this guide. Keep your casual choices classy and comfortable, but look like you give a damn if you want to catch the eye of that hot local girl or guy across the bar. Welcome to Atlanta, y’all! It’s cool to sound like the locals, but nothing will give you away faster than misusing the Southern expression “y’all.” A contraction for “you all,” y’all is only used for a plural; use it to refer to one person and you might be met with another Southernism, the sweet but snarky “bless your heart.” Southerners are also taught to mind our manners, so expect to have locals hold the door for you (whether you are male or female), and be prepared to do the same. And don’t be offended if someone calls you “ma’am” or “sir” — our mamas raised us that way. Though if you hear “sir” when hanging with the leather guys at the Atlanta Eagle, it might have an entirely different meaning. Sir, yes, sir.

Welcome to the
gayborhoods Spend a day checking out these inclusive boroughs — or make one your new home Atlanta’s reputation as a gay mecca was cemented during the 1970s and ‘80s with the rebirth of the Midtown neighborhood. Thousands of LGBT residents flocked to Atlanta and found a welcoming environment in the heart of the city, even if the neighborhood was widely dilapidated and abandoned. Dozens of gay bars transformed the neighborhood into one of the most exciting areas in the South for LGBT individuals. By the 1990s and 2000s, LGBT residents and business owners had lifted Midtown from its downtrodden blight and made it into the crown jewel of Atlanta neighborhoods. Although Midtown continues to be the center of gay life in Atlanta and one of the most renowned gayborhoods in the South, LGBT residents are now visibly dispersed throughout the entire city, from redeveloped areas like West Midtown and East Atlanta to nearby suburbs like Decatur and East Point. Take a peek at these inclusive neighborhoods, whether you are looking to spend an enjoyable afternoon or evening, or considering making Atlanta your new home.
Ansley Mall/Cheshire Bridge As Midtown has gentrified, the area that includes Ansley Mall and Cheshire Bridge Road has emerged as one of the most popular neighborhoods for LGBT residents and partygoers. While technically part of Midtown, the Ansley Mall and Cheshire Bridge
26
Part of what makes Atlanta so special is that LGBT life is not restricted to a single neighborhood, but spread through the metro area. areas have an abundance of nightlife and entertainment options. The Ansley Square shopping complex is a virtual gay courtyard, featuring the popular gay variety store Brushstrokes, the adult bookstore Capulets, and the gay bars Burkhart’s and Mixx all sharing the same parking lot. While neighboring Ansley Mall has more mainstream shopping venues, the queer presence there is so strong that the Starbucks in lovingly referred to as Bearbucks and the Kroger has been renamed Krogay. Ansley Mall also boasts The Hideaway, Midtown’s oldest neighborhood gay bar, and the new second location of Boy Next Door, where the gay boys (and others) flock for menswear. Cheshire Bridge holds the crown as Atlanta’s reigning gay party district, with dance clubs such as Jungle and the Heretic located along the strip. The Cheshire Bridge strip is also known for its variety of dining options, including numerous ethnic restaurants and gay-popular joints. Among the most gay-friendly establishments along the

strip are Latin-themed Las Margaritas and Roxx, which serves up American classics. Another highlight of gay dining in this neighborhood is located across the street from Ansley Mall, as Cowtippers provides quality steaks and burgers, while its patio is known to sizzle with sexy LGBT diners during warmer months.
Buckhead/West Midtown Considered one of Atlanta’s wealthiest neighborhoods, Buckhead has veered toward a more staid persona after a decade of being known as Atlanta’s party district. It remains the city’s busiest shopping district, anchored by the upscale Phipps Plaza and neighboring Lenox Mall. One of the few nightlife establishments to survive in Buckhead is the city’s only gay sports bar, Woofs, which continues to draw crowds for poker nights and viewing parties. The neighborhood also has the honor of
being the part-time home of Sir Elton John, who has owned a condo on Peachtree Road since 1990, and named his 2004 album after the famous street. West Midtown is one of the freshest neighborhoods in Atlanta, with its recent revitalization highlighted by the development of Atlantic Station. The mixed-use Atlantic Station combines metropolitan living with big-city shopping, and has quickly become one of the most popular venues in Atlanta.
Candler Park/Inman Park Located north of Dekalb Avenue and east of Moreland Avenue, Candler Park is home to progressive residents, cute older homes and small shops including the original Flying Biscuit, one of the city’s best breakfast restaurants (although their other NEIGHBORHOODS

It is also home to Atlanta’s gay community center, the Phillip Rush Center (1530 Dekalb Ave.), headquarters to LGBT organizations including Georgia Equality, The Health Initiative, Atlanta Pride, and more, plus host to meetings for a variety of LGBT groups and events. Neighboring Inman Park was Atlanta’s first planned suburb, and features Victorian homes and plenty of unique restaurants. Both neighborhoods also have popular annual festivals, complete with music, artists and many events. Look for the Inman Park Festival in the spring and Candler Park Fall Fest each October.
Decatur and DeKalb County LGBT life in metro Atlanta extends far beyond the city limits. In fact, the city of Decatur might be considered an even gayer city than Atlanta since it is consistently among the top 10 cities with the highest percentage of same-sex couples, based on analysis of U.S. Census data. Decatur is considered the most politically progressive area in Georgia, and enjoys a reputation for tolerance. Downtown Decatur offers myriad shops and restaurants, frequent special events on the Square, and is home to Eddie’s Attic, the famed acoustic music venue that often features lesbian and gay performers. As the hometown of the Indigo Girls, Agnes Scott College, the Feminist Women’s Health Center and dozens of quaint neighborhoods, Decatur and Dekalb County have long been among the top destinations for lesbian residents.
Downtown Downtown Atlanta and surrounding neighborhoods such as Old Fourth Ward,

XS Ultra Lounge
Mechanicsville and Castleberry Hills are in the midst of a turnaround, and as usual, LGBT residents are helping lead the way to neighborhood revitalization. Young LGBT professionals are seizing deals to become homeowners, creating new gayborhoods in the process. The overall nightlife scene in downtown has waned over the years, but a handful of clubs such as Rain and XS Ultra Lounge draw black gay crowds each weekend. The downtown culture is centered around tourism and the events that take place at Philips Arena, the Georgia Dome and the Tabernacle. In less than a decade, the Georgia Aquarium has become the city’s top tourist destination, and boasts the largest collection of marine life in the country. The World of Coke and Centennial Olympic Park are also within walking distance of the aquarium.

such as Little Five Points and East Atlanta Village. A mix of eclectic stores and restaurants, charming houses and duplexes, and nightlife options create a vintage vibe in this area of town. Located near East Atlanta is the very gay-friendly mixed-use community of Glenwood Park, featuring exciting retail and popular restaurants such as Vickery’s Bar & Grill and Matador Mexican Cantina. Little Five Points is particularly known as a hippie ‘hood, and is home to notable record stores, a community-owned natural foods store, and thriving indie music and theater scenes. Adding to the neighborhood’s indie street cred is Charis Books & More, a lesbian and feminist bookstore that has persevered for decades and continues to draw crowds for readings, performances and workshops. Gay establishments are an even greater part of the scene in the revitalized East Atlanta Village, with LGBT-owned bars, home décor stores and hair salons helping energize the area. My Sister’s Room, the only lesbian bar in the city, moved to the East Atlanta Village a few years ago and recently revitalized to be a sports bar during the day, and more traditional nightclub in the evening. A few doors down from My Sister’s Room is Mary’s, an offbeat gay bar that features legendary karaoke and themed-parties, and which was selected as the best gay bar in America a few years ago.
East Point Located southwest of Atlanta and just four miles from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the city of East Point boasts a small-town vibe with plenty of LGBT residents in the mix. The City Council has had gay representation for more than a decade, and plenty of gay folks turn out for popular city events like carnivals, Independence Day and the holiday tree lighting. Gay-popular restaurants include East

Point Corner Tavern, and the entire city rolls out the rainbow carpet each June for the annual East Point Possums Show, the largest drag show in the Southeast. Begun in a backyard back in 1998, the fundraiser now takes over the Commons in downtown East Point each June.
Grant Park/Cabbagetown Just south of Old Fourth Ward is Cabbagetown, an eclectic neighborhood where old factories were converted to hip lofts and businesses and where LGBT residents and businesses are helping the area carve a new identity. The area’s main commercial strip, which it shares with neighboring Grant Park, is Memorial Drive, lined with businesses and restaurants that pay homage to the neighborhood’s industrial roots with their facades. Among the places to eat on Memorial Drive is the lesbian-owned Ria’s Bluebird Cafe, a breakfast joint with a loyal following, and Tin Lizzy’s Cantina, which always attracts LGBT crowds. Another gay-popular eatery worth checking out is Agave on Boulevard Avenue, which is considered one of the best places in the city for southwest cuisine. Adjacent to Cabbagetown is Grant Park, one of Atlanta’s oldest intown neighborhoods and the city’s largest historic district. Grant Park is full of older Craftsman and Victorian homes, and also full of gay residents who played a key role in the neighborhood’s rebound from its decline after I-20 split the hood in half back in the ‘60s. Grant Park, named for the 130+ acre park which houses Zoo Atlanta and the historic Cyclorama, is also home to Oakland Cemetery, where Margaret Mitchell, author of “Gone With the Wind,” is buried along with other notable Atlantans.
Midtown The city’s original gayborhood, Midtown is still the core of LGBT life in Atlanta. The
Old Fourth Ward Neighboring Downtown, the Old Fourth Ward has also experienced a turnaround in recent years and attracted an influx of LGBT residents. A couple of commercial strips are bringing new life to the historic neighborhood, including the trendy bars, restaurants and boutiques located on Edgewood Avenue. Food aficionado Matt Ruppert, one of the original founders of the Big Gay Supper Club, turned his love of grub into Noni’s, one of the best Italian restaurants in Atlanta. Also along Edgewood Avenue is Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room & Ping Pong Emporium, a quirky spiritually themed

intersection of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue is considered the crossroad of gay Atlanta and a starting point for many LGBT visitors to the city. Nearby Piedmont Park, one of the marquee recreational venues in Atlanta, is brimming with gay patrons, sports leagues and special events year-round. The almost 200acre park is the site of large annual gatherings such as Atlanta Pride and AIDS Walk Atlanta, as well as popular fundraising parties like Joining Hearts (a pool party that raises money for HIV/AIDS organizations). The neighborhood’s nightlife options epitomize the diversity of LGBT Atlanta, with Bulldogs drawing the hip-hop crowd and the Eagle entertaining leather enthusiasts. Other Midtown favorites are Blake’s on the Park, which features the city’s top drag queens seven nights a week, and Amsterdam Atlanta, a video bar and cafe with creative drink and menu specials. The many gay-popular restaurants include Einstein’s and Joe’s on Juniper, both on Juniper Street, as well as FROGS Cantina and other eateries in the Midtown Promenade shopping center. Midtown also remains the cultural center of all of Atlanta, with thousands flocking to the neighborhood to attend shows at the Fox Theatre, enjoy the symphony at the Woodruff Arts Center and view exhibits at the High Museum of Art.

bar more commonly known as Church. Old Fourth Ward is also home to the gay bar Cockpit, offering another queer outlet for this bustling part of town.
Virginia Highland Centered at the intersection of Virginia and Highland avenues, Virginia Highland is packed with independent restaurants and retail — from clothes shopping at Bill Hallman Original, to steaks and martinis at Highland Tap, brunch at Murphy’s and many more shopping and dining treats. The annual SummerFest, held in June, is also among Atlanta’s most popular neighborhood festivals.
The ‘Burbs LGBT life in metro Atlanta extends far beyond the city limits. In addition to Decatur, other nearby cities have made accomplishments in gay progress and acceptance, whether elected officials in Pine Lake and Doraville, or gay bars in more conservative areas such as Marietta. Lithonia is home to one the largest black, gay-affirming churches in metro Atlanta. The energy that spurred LGBT advancement in Midtown has consistently gained momentum and spread in all directions of metro Atlanta, and allows gay culture to thrive in the conservative South.
