Jim Farmer Festival Director, Out On Film

Thirty-five years later we are still around, thanks to the work of Ranson and so many others, and have become one of the most lauded LGBTQ film festivals around. Earlier this year, Moviemaker magazine included Out On Film in their 2022 “50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Free” list. To be in that list as the only LGBTQ film festival is an amazing testament to those filmmakers, sponsors and patrons who have supported us all these years.

WELCOME TO OUT ON FILM 2022!

Last year, we returned to in-person screenings and are happy to again this season. We open our festival with a bang—Nicholas Stoller’s Bros, the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men who are maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love, co-written by and starring Billy Eichner. Our closing night film is Todd Flaherty’s remarkable Chrissy Judy, and this year we return to in-person awards with the presentation of our Icon Award to the amazing Colman Domingo.
In 1987, I was a senior at the University of Georgia. I knew I was gay but didn’t know if I would ever feel comfortable enough being out. I finally did so two years later. In Atlanta in 1987, conversely, a group of community activists—included Rebecca Ranson—started Out On Film as a series of weekend events and stand-alone screenings and watched the organization grow over time.
Check out our exciting 2022 schedule, watch a lot of great films and join us for some special Q and As, both in person and virtual. Make sure to look through this gorgeous program guide and visit us at www.outonfilm.org Thank you for your support.
While we look forward to seeing audiences in theaters, we want all of our patrons to feel secure. As such, we will again be offering Out On Film fare virtually as well—and all but six of our 140+ films will be available to stream nationwide.

This fall, Universal Pictures proudly presents the first romantic comedy from a major studio about two gay men maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy.
Starring Billy Eichner, the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film—and featuring an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast, including Luke Macfarlane (Killjoys), Ts Madison (The Ts Madison Experience), Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire), Guillermo Díaz (Scandal), Guy Branum (The Other Two) and Amanda Bearse (Married …with Children)—Bros is directed by Nicholas Stoller from his screenplay with Eichner. The film is produced by Judd Apatow, Stoller and Joshua Church (co-producer Trainwreck, Step Brothers) and is executive produced by Eichner and Karl Frankenfield.
THURSDAY, SEPT 22 @ 7 PM OPENING NIGHT FEATURE BROS
From the ferocious comic mind of Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street, 2019’s The Lion King, Difficult People, Impeachment: American Crime Story) and the hitmaking brilliance of filmmakers Nicholas Stoller (the Neighbors films, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Judd Apatow (The King of Staten Island, Trainwreck, The Big Sick), comes Bros, a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about how hard it is to find another tolerable human being to go through life with.

“out to get him” day job boss in order to avoid being fired after he accidentally takes drugs. A bisexual stand-up comic must decide between the dick jokes of her past and committing to the bit and going full queer. Flight attendants Chris and Wes instigate twisted mile-high games with passengers, leading to the unimaginable: trying to make an emergency landing after someone poisoned the pilot.
Directed by Emmy winner Yuval David and produced by Lance Bass, the extraordinarily moving Wonderfully Made—LGBTQ+R(ELIGION) is a feature-length documentary that strikes at the root of antiLGBTQ attitudes by exploring the challenges and aspirations of LGBTQ+ Catholics. The film focuses on the Catholic Church because it is one of the largest religious organizations in the world, and because its anti-LGBTQ+ stance is well known and growing more hardline, at least in some circles. The narrative of the film is shaped by the process of a fine art project creating unprecedented, photographic iconography depicting Jesus as a member/ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

BLACK AS U R poses to Black America a highly confrontational and much avoided question. Why do we as a people protest against racial injustice, but disregard the injustices experienced by Black queer people? In this incendiary documentary, filmmaker Micheal Rice takes the audience on a journey through the homophobia that characterizes many Black spaces, both contemporarily and via an autobiographic look into his own upbringing in the south. BLACK AS U R is the first step in confronting the African American community about queerphobia via the searing stories of queer Black people.

Mama Bears is an exploration of the journeys taken by Sara Cunningham and Kimberly Shappley, two “mama bears,” and Tammi Terrell Morris, a young African American lesbian whose struggle for selfacceptance perfectly exemplifies why the mama bears are so vitally important. Mama Bears is the story of women who have allowed nearly every aspect of their lives to be completely reshaped by love. Although they may have grown up as fundamentalist, evangelical Christians, the mama bears are willing to risk losing friends, family, and faith communities to keep their children safe—even if it challenges their belief systems and rips their worlds apart. This transcendent documentary is the latest work from Atlanta director Daresha Kyi.

A transgender girl locks herself in her room for fear of the monsters that threaten her outside, until a new reality appears behind the mirror where these monsters do not exist, and she is free to be who she is or who wants to be. In a completely gray world, the colorful identity of a conservative young man is accidentally revealed by a playful boy. An astronaut encounters an unexpected emergency while on a routine mission and finds himself jettisoned into space. Bi The Way is a short, funny, and intimate animated film about Amir’s life-journey as a bisexual cis man. When Catalina develops a crush on another girl in her Quinceañera court, her fingernails grow at a superhuman pace—a blessing in Black and Latina beauty culture, but a curse for a lesbian. The Magentalman lives an ordinary life in his empty world, every day is the same. Life is boringly black and white, until there’s green. Mint green. Inner Wound Real relays the story of three BIPOC folks who self-injure, then find new ways to cope. New Moon is an imaginative surrealist journey of young Jay Jay and his mother Edie. Their inner-city dreams are illuminated by the New Moon accompanied by magic of Aretha Franklin playing on a summer’s eve on a transistor radio in a backyard in West Philadelphia.
