Welcome to Out On Film 2019! Greetings – and welcome to the 32nd annual Out On Film! Thank you for your support of us and independent LGBTQ cinema.

This is another tremendous year for LGBTQ films. I am happy to see such diversity in our line-up, with representation from countries around the world as well as Atlanta. We open this year’s festival with the mesmerizing “For They Know Not What They Do,” Daniel Karslake’s look at the LGBTQ children of four families (including Pulse shooting survivor Vico Baez Fabo and HRC spokesperson Sarah McBride) and how they managed to reconcile with each other amidst the religious right backlash that followed after the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. It’s one of the most moving, hopeful movies you’ll see this year and we are honored to screen it. Other jewels in our line-up this year include Doug Spearman’s romantic “From Zero to I Love You” (starring Spearman’s “Noah’s Arc” co-star Daryl Stephens), Judith Light and a beautiful ensemble cast in the Sundance charmer “Before You Know It,” “Star Search” winner Sam Harris in his beautifully-made “HAM: A Musical Memoir,” James Sweeney’s “Straight Up,” arguably the funniest film of 2019, Wendy Jo Carlton’s super sexy “Good Kisser,” Mike Doyle’s acclaimed “Sell By” with Scott Evans and Kate Walsh, Rachel Mason’s absorbing “Circus of Books,” the lovely and humane “Gay Chorus Deep South,” Del Shores’ hilarious “Six Characters in Search of a Play,” the intoxicating “An Almost Ordinary Summer,” the fan girl documentary “Queering the Script,” Gerald McCullouch’s “All Male All Nude: Johnsons,” the crowd-pleasing “The Shiny Shrimps,” the wonderfully entertaining “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street,” Brendan Boogie’s comedy/drama “The Sympathy Card,” the stunning AIDS-themed “5B,” and our second annual horror night with the vampire/female empowerment film “Bit,” Fire Island murder and intrigue in “Last Ferry” and several other scary/funny shorts. We also expect our usual quota of visiting filmmakers and maybe even a surprise or two. After so many gains over the last decade, we – as LGBTQ Americans – find ourselves in uncertain times politically and it’s vital to stand together as a community. Our films here can entertain but they can also educate and deal with issues of the day – immigration, abortion, HIV/AIDS, transgender rights, criminal injustice. We expect to have some great conversations this year. Our first eight days will again be at the Midtown Art Cinema and then we’ll have second weekend screenings at both Out Front Theatre Company and the Plaza Theatre. We hope to entertain you, educate you, and make you laugh, cry, and think – and do it all communally. Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing you September 26 – October 6. All screenings September 26 – October 3 are at the Midtown Art Cinema THURSDAY, SEPT. 26 @ 7 PM OPENING NIGHT FEATURE SPONSORED BY WARNERMEDIA

FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO

(U.S., 93 min., Directed by Daniel Karslake) In this stunning, beautiful film, director Daniel Karslake – following up his acclaimed “For the Bible Tells Me So” – charts the story of four religious families with LGBTQ children – including Pulse survivor Vico Baez Fabo and transgender activist (and HRC press secretary) Sarah McBride – amidst the backlash that followed by the religious right after the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. Full of eventual hope as these families learn to accept their loved ones, “For They Know Not What They Do” takes us on a journey of understanding what connects us all and gives us the courage to embrace each other. Expected in attendance: Daniel Karslake and subject Vico Baez Febo THURSDAY, SEPT. 26 @ 9:15 PM

END OF THE CENTURY

(Argentina, 84 min., Directed by Lucio Castro) In his alluring and sexy debut feature, Lucio Castro offers both a sun-soaked European travelogue and an epic, decades-spanning romance. When Ocho (Juan Barberini), a 30-something Argentine poet on vacation in Barcelona, spots Javi (Ramón Pujol), a Spaniard from Berlin, from the balcony of his Airbnb, the attraction is subtle but persistent. After a missed connection on the beach, a third chance encounter escalates to a seemingly random hookup. But are these two merely beautiful strangers in a foreign city or are they part of each other’s histories – and maybe even their destinies? Castro deliberately parses out mystery after mystery, leading the audience on a journey of discovery as the two leading men discover themselves and each other. In Spanish with English subtitles

THE ARCHIVETTES

(U.S., 61 min., Directed by Megan Rossman) “Our history was disappearing as quickly as we were making it.” With that realization, Deborah Edel and Joan Nestle co-founded the Lesbian Herstory Archives, the world’s largest collection of materials by and about lesbians. For more than 40 years, through many of the major milestones in LGBTQ+ history, the all-volunteer organization has literally rescued history from the trash. Now the co-founders are in their mid-70s, and the group faces a number of challenges: A transfer of leadership. The rise of digital technology. A renewed call to activism in a politically charged moment. “The Archivettes” is a documentary film that explores how this group came together to combat lesbian invisibility and create “a place that says yes.” FRIDAY, SEPT. 27 @ 7 PM

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

(U.S., 98 min., Directed by Hannah Pearl Utt) This Sundance charmer blends big laughs with heartfelt family drama. In 1993 New York City, lesbian Rachel (Hannah Pearl Utt) finds herself having to take care of both her dysfunctional family and the community theater above their house. She and her sister Jackie (Jen Tullock) discover that the mother they thought had died (Judith Light, in peak form) when they were young is alive and starring on a popular daytime soap opera. Co-starring Mandy Patinkin and Alec Baldwin, “Before You Know It” is one of the year’s most endearing and quirky treats. CONTINUES ON PAGE 16

SPIDER MITES OF JESUS: THE DIRTWOMAN DOCUMENTARY (U.S., 93 min., Directed by Jerry Williams) When he was an infant, he suffered from the “Spider Mites of Jesus” (his mother couldn’t pronounce spinal meningitis). This caused mental challenges that resulted in his lifelong illiteracy. At 13, he began selling his body on the streets as a drag prostitute. When he was arrested, he took a dump in the back of the police car, leading the cops to give him the moniker: Dirtwoman. Since then he’s run for mayor, gotten kicked out of the inauguration of America’s first black governor (Douglas Wilder), posed for his own pin-up calendar (weighing in at 350 pounds), and hosted the annual Hamaganza fundraiser that provided “Hams for the Hamless.” Expected in attendance: Jerry Williams CONTINUES ON PAGE 18

HOLLY NEAR: SINGING FOR OUR LIVES

(U.S., 62 min., Directed by Jim Brown) Singer, songwriter, and social activist Holly Near has been performing for well over 50 years and in the process created what Gloria Steinem called, “The first soundtrack of the women’s movement.” From small-town Northern California to sold-out shows on some of the most iconic stages to million-person peace marches, Singing for Our Lives documents the story of the activist and her art. It also serves as an important testament to a time of protest and coalition building, and the weaving of a multicultural consciousness always rooted in contemporary activism. Featuring Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, the late Ronnie Gilbert, and the late Tom Hayden, this film elevates Near to her deserved status of iconic artist and activist, and speaks to anyone who believes in peace, justice, feminism, and humanity. CIRCUS OF BOOKS

(U.S., 91 min., Directed by Rachel Mason) After falling on hard times in the mid ‘70s and trying to take care of their three young children, Karen and Barry Mason decided to answer an ad placed by Larry Flynt, looking for distributors. It changed their lives. For nearly four decades, the couple ran Circus of Books, an LA porn store that became a hub for the local gay community. This fascinating documentary – directed by daughter Rachel Mason – looks at how the two dealt with federal obscenity charges and kept their family together, including a gay son. Among those interviewed for the film are drag personality Alaska and porn superstar Jeff Stryker. Expected in attendance: a Skype interview with the Mason family CONTINUES ON PAGE 22

Best friend Cammy’s latest beau checks all of her boxes – if you don’t count that he actually lives in a box; Haley’s student is more interested in studying her than studying for the SATs; and Elizabeth and Damon – the “stable” ones – are on the brink of divorce after 15 years of so-called bliss. But, in this mess, hope springs eternal as they all muddle their way through to try to make life work. QUEERING THE SCRIPT

SUNDAY, SEPT. 29 @ 3 PM (SPONSORED BY WARNERMEDIA)

QUEERING THE SCRIPT

(Canada, 91 min., Directed by Gabrielle Zilkha) Queerness on television has moved from subtext, in series such as “Xena: Warrior Princess”, to all-out multi-season relationships between women, as seen on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Lost Girl.” and “Carmilla.” But things still aren’t perfect. In 2016, a record number of queer women died on fictional shows, which broke the hearts of queer fans and launched a successful fight for better, more diverse LGTBQ2S+ representation. Stars such as Ilene Chaiken, Stephanie Beatriz, Lucy Lawless and Angelica Ross join with the voices of numerous kickass fangirls in this fast-paced history of queer women’s representation in contemporary television. “Queering the Script” not only charts the evolution of queerness, but also demonstrates the extraordinary impact of activism on its many diverse fans, ensuring that they see themselves accurately portrayed on screen. SUNDAY, SEPT. 29 @ 5 PM

THE GARDEN LEFT BEHIND

(U.S., 88 min., Directed by Flavio Alves) “The Garden Left Behind” traces the relationship between Tina, a young Mexican trans woman, and Eliana, her grandmother, as they navigate Tina’s transition and struggle to build a life for themselves as undocumented immigrants in New York City. As Tina begins the process of transitioning, Eliana struggles to understand Tina and fears that their life together in America is no longer what they bargained for. Tina finds camaraderie in a small but mighty transgender advocate group, but soon, Tina finds herself having to fight for the life that she’s meant to live – facing violent threats, seemingly insurmountable medical costs, questions about her legal immigration status, and increasing skepticism from the man she loves. GAY CHORUS DEEP SOUTH

(U.S., 100 min., Directed by David Charles Rodrigues) In response to a wave of discriminatory anti-LGBTQ laws in Southern states and the divisive 2016 election, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarks on a tour of the American Deep South. Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig and joined by The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, the tour brings a message of music, love and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma, performing in churches, community centers and concert halls in hopes of uniting us in a time of difference. The journey also challenges Tim and other Chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. What emerges is a less divided America, where the lines that divide us – faith, politics, sexual identity – are erased through the soaring power of music, humanity and a little drag. (U.S. 90 min., Directed by Jeffery McHale) Released in 1995, “Showgirls” was hated by audiences and critics alike. It won 13 Razzie Awards that season and become known as one of the biggest flops of our generation. Two decades later, though, it has become a cult classic and scholars debate its merit. Using commentary from the likes of Peaches Christ and archival footage, director Jeffrey McHale looks at the film and its repercussions with fresh, massively entertaining eyes.

WHERE JUSTICE ENDS

(U.S., 50 min., Directed by George Zuber) “Where Justice Ends” is at the intersection of two important and timely topics of social justice — conditions within the U.S. prison system and the injustices that befall transgender people encountering the law. “Where Justice Ends” looks into why so many transgender people encounter the police, how those encounters often lead to discriminatory treatment, and the inhumane conditions that transgender people all too frequently experience. Told through the words of transgender inmates and experts, and narrated by the Tony award-winning stage, screen, and TV actor Brian Stokes Mitchell, “Where Justice Ends” casts a light on one of the most hidden social injustices in our country. LEONARD SOLOWAY’S BROADWAY

(U.S., 84 min., Directed by Jeff Wolk) Leonard Soloway is an American original and a Broadway legend. In a career that has spanned more than 70 years, Soloway has helped bring to the stage nearly 150 productions that have collected more than 40 Tony Awards, 21 Drama Desk Awards and two Pulitzer Prizes. And at age 90, Leonard is not done, still working to put together yet another show. Now this extraordinary story is told in “Leonard Soloway’s Broadway,” a feature-length documentary that goes behind the scenes to show how a master producer brings shows to life, coaxing creativity out of chaos. The movie tells the story of Leonard, at age 87, energetically working to produce “Tappin Thru Life,” a musical memoir starring veteran dancer and actor Maurice Hines. TUESDAY, OCT. 1 at 7 PM

SCREAM, QUEEN: MY NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

(U.S., 100 min., Directed by Tyler Jensen and Roman Chimienti) At the time of release, The Advocate dubbed 1985’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge” the gayest horror film ever made. For the film’s closeted young star, Mark Patton, such a tag was a stark reminder about the homophobia rampant in Hollywood at the time – and the painful experience he had making the high-profile film and living through the polarizing critical aftermath. This new documentary highlights Patton’s time in the horror spotlight, and Patton – who co-produced the film with Roman Chimienti, a NYC-based sound engineer – sets the record straight about the controversial sequel, which ended his acting career just as it was about to begin. SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF A PLAY

(U.S., 88 min., Directed by Emerson Collins) “Sordid Lives” creator Del Shores’ one-man show proves once and for all that he is not a writer, he’s a self-proclaimed thief! Riffing on Pirandello’s classic title, Shores brings to life six one-of-a-kind characters he has met in real life that haven’t quite made it into one of his plays, films or TV shows. Shores presents the truth behind how he collected these eccentrics and their stories as he portrays his hilarious, off-the-rails encounters with them. He reenacts his encounters with an anti-vegetarian waitress, a Trump-hating elderly actress with an inhaler in one hand and a cigarette in the other, a Magic Mike-loving latent redneck, a once-brilliant drama teacher who is now obsessed with porn, a monkey-hating lesbian with COPD, and a racist Republican with a heart of gold. Shores brings incisive comedy and surprising poignancy to these stories. CHANGING THE GAME

(U.S., 95 min., Michael Barnett) Michael Barnett’s dynamic documentary takes us into the lives of three high school athletes – all at different stages of their athletic seasons, personal lives, and unique paths as transgender teens. Their stories span across the U.S. – from Sarah, a skier and teen policymaker in New Hampshire, to Andraya, a track star in Connecticut openly transitioning into her authentic self. The film centers on Mack Beggs, who made headlines last year when he became the Texas State Champion in wrestling and was heralded as a hero by some while receiving hate and threats from others. Trans athletes have to work harder than their cisgender peers in order to thrive in their field while also having the courage and resilience to face daily harassment and discrimination. The kids in this film have found sports as a way to channel the negativity around them into a positive, to gain a sense of self-worth and validation. This film is their urgent, articulate plea for acceptance. CONTINUES ON PAGE 66

MAKING SWEET TEA

SUNDAY, OCT. 6 @ 4:15 PM at Out Front Theatre Company

MAKING SWEET TEA

(U.S., 89 min., Directed by John L. Jackson, Jr. and Nora Gross) “Making Sweet Tea” is a documentary film that chronicles the journey of southern-born, black gay researcher and performer E. Patrick Johnson as he travels home to North Carolina to come to terms with his past. The film also chronicles some of his travels to Georgia, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. as he reconnects with six of the men he interviewed for his book, Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South – An Oral History, an award-winning project that he transformed into several staged plays over the course of a decade. “Making Sweet Tea” combines documentary moments from the men’s lives a decade after the publication of the book and from Johnson’s life, depicting both how the men have changed and been changed by the book and plays. The film also covers the complexities of Johnson’s relationships with these men, with his own family, and with his hometown in western North Carolina. One experimental component of the film is Johnson’s re-staging the performance of the men’s narratives in their homes, in their churches, or on their jobs, sometimes with them directing him and/or with them in the scene. Blurring the line between art and life, “Making Sweet Tea” offers a rare glimpse into the lives of people rarely given a platform to speak, while also demonstrating how research, artistry, and life converge.
