WELCOME TO OUT ON FILM 2023!
In 2008, I saw a blurb in Southern Voice that the Atlanta Film Festival was giving up Out On Film and wanted it to be a community-run organization moving forward. I immediately reached out to the group that was taking over and said blatantly I’d like to be the festival director/ head of programming. It seemed like a perfect job for me. Little did I know what I was stepping into – and that 15 years would pass by quickly.
Those first years were tough but we slowly built up a team and we have continued to grow, season after season. As we dive into our 36th anniversary, we have become one of the major LGBTQIA film festivals around. This year we were named as the top film festival in the nation by the readers of USA Today and 10Best. To have that honor is an amazing testament to those filmmakers, sponsors and patrons who have supported us all these years, and the staff and volunteers who keep us hungry to grow every season.
In 2021 we returned to in-person screenings and we are still excited to be able to do that again. We open our festival with a bang – Bill Oliver’s Our Son, featuring excellent performances by Billy Porter and Luke Evans as a gay couple in a custody battle of their 8-year-old son when they part ways. Our closing night film is Tom Gustafson’s delightful Glitter & Doom, a musical featuring songs from the legendary and local Indigo Girls.
Other treats include the world premiere of A Big Hairy Hit: Where the Bears Are: The Documentary, the romantic charmer Golden Delicious, the exhilarating Cora Bora with Megan Stalter, Corey Sherman’s critically adored Big Boys, the remarkable Jewelle: A Just Vision, the topical Kenyatta: Do Not Wait Your Turn, the extraordinary Stuck in Greece: An LGBT Refugee Crisis, the exquisite Lie With Me, and so much more.
We have our always popular Horror Night, this year with three offerings. We will also host our Oscar® qualifying drama shorts and a reading of the second winner of the Out On Film screenplay competition.
While we look forward to seeing audiences in theaters, we want all of our patrons to feel secure. As such, we will again be offering Out On Film fare virtually as well. Many of our features will be available for streaming and all of our short films will be. Please be sure to check our schedule and support the businesses who advertise in our gorgeous program guide. You can also find out more about us at www.outonfilm.org
People always ask me why it’s still important to host an LGBTQ film festival. At a time when our community is under attack, it is vital to bring us all together and provide a safe haven – and offer positive portrayals of our entire community.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

U=U and you
What does U=U stand for?
Today, a major goal for HIV treatment is helping you reach an undetectable viral load. When your viral load is undetectable, there is so little virus in your blood that a lab test can’t measure it.
Current research shows that taking HIV treatment as prescribed and getting to an undetectable viral load and staying undetectable prevents the transmission of HIV to others through sex. Reaching and staying undetectable is only possible by sticking with your treatment.
There are many resources for education and information to help you get to and stay undetectable, including the link below.
And always remember, speak openly and honestly with your healthcare provider to learn about HIV and what is best for you.

WHERE THE BEARS ARE: THE DOCUMENTARY
(U.S., 91 MIN., DIRECTED BY EDUARDO AQUINO)
This hilarious and touching documentary tells the story of how three older gay “bears” working in Hollywood, tired of having their gay-themed ideas rejected by the mainstream, decided to self-produce their own web series. Against all odds, the comedy featuring three bear roommates like The Golden Girls solving crimes a la Murder, She Wrote, became a sensation online and one of the most successful web shows of all time. The documentary examines ageism, body-shaming, sex-positivity, the creative process, and how friendship and community can ultimately create something beloved all over the world.

Lalo is a sex influencer: he posts photos of his naked body and homemade porn videos for his thousands of followers on social networks. Lalo directs his own life, but in private, out of character, he seems to live in permanent melancholy. Where does desire itself go when life turns into a sex show. Pornomelancolia takes pornography as a starting point to reflect on the relationship between sexuality and work, on being public and feeling alone, on the characters that we build to show ourselves (or hide) from the world.

(U.S., 92 MIN., DIRECTED BY SHARON “ROCKY” ROGGIO)
1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture is a feature documentary that follows the story of tireless researchers who trace the origins of the anti-gay movement among Christians to a grave mistranslation of the Bible in 1946. It chronicles the discovery of never-before-seen archives at Yale University which unveil astonishing new revelations, and casts significant doubt on any biblical basis for LGBTQ+ prejudice. Featuring commentary from prominent scholars as well as opposing pastors, including the personal stories of the film’s creators, 1946 is at once challenging, enlightening, and inspiring. While other documentaries have been successful in their attempt to treat the symptom of homophobia in the church, 1946 is working to diagnose and treat the disease—Biblical Literalism.
