WVHIT Vice President

TOM WAMSLEY The West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament was created to allow our athletes in the small public schools of WV an opportunity to experience a statewide competition on a level playing field. We declare with great pride that our teams span from border to border of our great state while we celebrate and compete in our 10th consecutive year. We make a special effort to recognize each area that our teams represent by the community histories listed in this program. Who knows where the next “Zeke from Cabin Creek” may come from? But whether our athletes attain professional status, college team membership, or finish their athletic careers with high school graduation; it has always been the intent of the WVHIT to provide them the best experience possible. Many of our alumni of this tourney have told us that it was one of the most memorable moments of their high school career. For the many coaches, athletic directors, and principals who have supported the WVHIT over the years; that has been the greatest compensation possible. We have all been blessed!

J. MARK GLADWELL

The West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament was created to provide athletes from small, rural, public schools the opportunity to participate in a statewide tournament. Entering our 11th year, the tournament has been tremendously successful. The hospitality of the member schools during the first three rounds of the tournament is unique to the WVHIT. This tournament is something our players and coaches look forward to each season. With teams from all across West Virginia competing, players, coaches, and fans have the opportunity to see the beauty of our great state. The WVHIT makes an effort to highlight member schools and their athletes in all sports. The team pages highlight each community’s accomplishments, and the scholar athlete page lists all athletes who have the drive and commitment to be successful in the classroom. Visiting the gymnasiums of the members, it is easy to see the passion that makes the WVHIT a success. This year’s tournament promises to once again be very competitive in both Division 1 and Division 2. This level of competition makes the WVHIT one of the premier sanctioned events of the WVSSAC. Best of luck to all players, coaches, and schools in the 2021 WVHIT!

A county line runs through Paden City. However, the Wildcat spirit courses through the veins of every resident in this town that lies in both Wetzel and Tyler Counties. For decades, the county line caused division in this community. Tyler students went to Sistersville and Wetzel students to Magnolia. That changed in 1952 when Paden City High School opened. Local factory workers took payroll deductions to purchase land for the athletic field and nearly 400 citizens carried the light towers from the railroad depot to the field and installed them. Since, the community has stood united, just as it did in 1950, and thwarted off consolidation time and time again, most recently in 2010.
