The phone rings. "Good evening, Gay Liberation Front. Fred speaking,** If an uncomfortable silence follows that familiar greet ing, the person answering that phone knows from experience that the pause and silence might be followed by one of three things: a hang-up, an obscene epithet, or the awkward voice of a person who got the courage to dial that number, and, for the first time, discuss her or his gayness. The obscene calls are written off as juvenile pranks. The hang-up calls are probably dialed by a person too frightened to talk to anyone about being gay. So overwhelming is the fear, so successful the repression, that to utter the words, *'I am a homosexual** would be no less than a traumatic experience. Dialing that number is a healthy firststep. If words follow that uncomfortable silence, they are sometimes spoken by a young high school age person who has just discovered gay feelings and for the first time is able to discuss them. Or, perhaps it is an older person who is married, has a family, and d iscovers these gay feelings. For every two calls like these, there are thousands who just can't get beyond dialing the GLF number. The volunteer counsttlling staff at the GLF.office doesn't claim to have a bag of answers for each problem, nor do they dole out advice. The one thing we do have is an open and very sympathetic ear. That ear has had to endure shouted obscenities and threats. But then, the uncomfortable silence that preceded the hang-up only r e affirms the staff's determination to be there when that hang-up caller is ready to say it • »0»000000000000<>0000000»»»'

Gays from out of town tend to visit and subsequently move to communities where things are happening. Let's hope that in the coming year Rochester's gay community will continue to hold together and that the potential enemies (bars-gay organizations, gay men-gay women) will continue to cooperate and help each other. O&C DOES SERIES ON "THE GAY^" Beginning 10 Dedember, the Democrat and Chronicle featured a series of articles by reporter Handi Harris on the Rochester Gay Community, Entitled "From Out of the Closet", the series included interviews with gay women and men, gay parents, parents of gays, gay feminists and the police. Host significantly, reporter Harris confirmed the existance of the "Homofile", a list of suspected homosexuals kept by Hochester police. (Details on this matter are given B I S B where in this issue). "I'm beginning to gat a clue to the apressipn that you people are subjected to^ Ms. Harris said. "I've taken guite a bit of kidding around the office abnut my series," Thare h^s bean surprising little correspondence about the series. The paper as of 2 January had received three negative letters, and one affirmitive letter which will be published. There were half a dozen sympathetic letters which were received, but could not be printed because they ware unsigned. "There were about 20 telephone calls—^nost of them complimentary", said reporter Harris. She added that no one seemed upset by the lifestyle of tuo married lesbians and tbeir child althouoh several called to complain abput the women being on welfare. (Reporter Harris had explained in the article that the uomen were in a special job training program, and would drop welfare after graduation and placement) "The lack of the expected response indii^dtes that either no one read the articles (and ue knou that's not true), or that you are succeding tremenddously in your goals." Hs Harris continued "I knou this is true, because any number of people have stoppei me, and made comments like ' it' K a.jout time' concerning the articles." The Harris articles have apparently ^et a precident for other Gannet newspapers. Follouing Pis.
